The Chechens weren’t citizens in a democracy, ending Russian Soviet hegemony was an understandable and laudable goal. They never agreed to be part of Russia whether Imperial, Soviet or the modern Federation, they were transfered against their will in a treaty with Persia. The idea that the people there aren’t entitled to so much as a referendum on self rule is an interesting position to take.
I am sure the American Indians or the Confederacy agree.
