He had a very rare type of cancer, and had (among other things) a liver transplant as treatment. After that, with no immune system (immunosuppressants for the rest of his life), any cancer or any recurrence would kill you.

(I’ve heard the stories too, but a liver transplant doesn’t sound very alternative to me.)

The story wasn’t that he never engaged conventional treatment but that he delayed certain treatments while trying alternative therapies.
