My mom worked at housekeeping and waitressing for years and years. Now retired. Much of the same kind of background (I was never in a ‘gifted’ class - too lazy)

That approach—underachieving gifted kids are not really gifted—drives me CRAZY as a teacher. Gifted education, or at least teaching techniques that engage gifted students, is NOT a reward but the level of instruction that they are entitled to.
