When half of the time I hear constant griping about immigrants coming in, while at least half of my friends are immigrants, it really, really puts me on edge.

I hear you. But what I do is, I just go into passive mode, kinda nod and smile, and occasionally sneak in a halfhearted rebuttal. These conversations never last very long, and they only come up once or twice during a visit. And they’re great folks outside of their rather orthodox politics.
