Business Insider gets the opinions of scientists wrong. No scientist considers the theory to be “infallible.” (Infallible is not even the correct word for what they’re trying to convey, that the theory cannot be unseated.) Scientific opinion consider it the best explanation for the diversity of life on Earth. That does not mean it can’t be unseated if a better explanation is proposed and tested.

theory is just a clumsy attempt to capture something from german, presumably. It just means “system.” chess has opening theory. It doesn’t mean people are guessing as to how openings work (except at my level), just that it is a system of knowledge that is not set in stone, like Aristotelian logic. And yes, ideas in chess opening theory do evolve. The king’s indian defense was a kind of exotic tournament choice for black in the 30’s, but by 1953 it was the Russian weapon of choice at the Zurich Candidates tourney. And the theory of natural selection also has evolved over time as our knowledge has expanded, mostly thanks to our understanding of genetics.
