Avoid the Air and Space Museum on the Mall. Way too crowded and all the best pieces have been relocated to Dulles. The new American history museum is fantastic, the art museums are fantastic (the galleries hidden behind the Castle are the best - always empty), the Hirshorn is fantastic, and the American Indian museum is a fine study of gift shops. The Holocaust museum is also a must see, but not actually a part of the Smithsonian system.
