For the Rush fans, "Retrospective 3" has two remixed songs from Vapor Trails (One Little Victory and Earthshine) and the difference--even to my untrained ear--is amazing. They really should remix the entire album.

no, it's right-hand thread, and it's a hex head cap screw but some folks call them bolts ...

78 revGDright  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 3:58:42pm

That looks like a "Jesus Bolt." It's the only thing holding up something real important and if you pull it out from under the whole whatever falls apart.

79 Windhorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:12:46pm

it looks to me like we are looking at both a bolt and nut. the threads on the upper end of the bolt seem to stop.... which makes me think we are looking at the end of the bolt (ie. visible). The nut is bearing on the concrete.... but I would think there should be a flat washer there to help distribute the load into the concrete.....

A bolt is bolt if there is a nut on the other end... say holding two flanges together. A screw is something that is held in place by internal threads machined into a casting or weldment.....

80 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:28:36pm

...not to mention the fact that the threads wouldn't go all the way up to the head of the bolt.... they would stop short of the head some distance....

81 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:29:54pm

unless the bolt is really short....

82 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:35:28pm

the thread length is usually 2 x diameter plus 1/4-inch....

83 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:36:25pm

....and, there ought to be a lockwasher in there too - especially if they are coarse threads......

84 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:54:57pm

oh shizzle.... that ain't concrete.... that's a steel tube! No need for the flat washer!

85 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:56:41pm

....and, I think the bolt head is UP, not down.... the bolt head is cpatured inside of that galvanized channel or whatever it is....

86 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:56:56pm

alright, I am done.

87 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 4:57:55pm

no..... then the whole thing would collapse.... the bolt head is down....

WERE IS THE SCREW?

WASHINGTON D.C.!

89 HogsBreath  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 5:05:01pm

Not to be overly picky, but that's not a bolt. Its an adjusting screw. What appears to be the bolt head is actually a nut. The nut is rotated raising and lowering the screw and thus adjusting the height of what ever that load is above it.

90 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 5:11:22pm

hmmm.... maybe a jacking bolt..... I guess I would have to look at what is inside of that channel, and what the end of the bolt looks like....

91 WindHorse  Sat, Feb 28, 2009 5:12:19pm

...or jacking screw....
