There are two fruit cakes I like—Claxton’s and Harry & David’s. Mom would buy bars of Claxton’s, freeze them and then she would slice them real thin. So good with a cup of Yuban!

I don’t think I’d mind fruitcake if I ever found any actual fruit in it. Whatever that unnatural red, green, and yellow stuff in it is, it can’t have grown on a tree.

Swedes have stollen, too. My mom used to make it every once in a while for Christmas. But she used real fruit and (ahem) real rum — I’m sure only for its perservative qualities.

My other indulgence at Christmas is Buche de Noel. One of my aunts was French and she would make it every year. My cousins have kept the tradition going, but they hang on to the recipe like the Krabby Patty secret formula. Haha.

I wish I could find my grandmother’s recipe for Christmas tree coffee cake. She was a terrible cook for the most part, but somehow or other I loved her breads, which were heavy and flat, and yeasty. It’s a character flaw.

My former mother-in-law’s family were German immigrants. Their holiday treat were Springerles. My MIL’s aunt made them for everyone in the extended family until age and her waning health curtailed the activity. After she died, my sister-in-law took up the mantle, and now my niece makes them. I think my daughter has given them a try, too. But you have to like anise flavor to really grok them.

Also, to make them authentically, you need a special rolling pin to press the pictures into the dough.

The start of a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Maryland was delayed just a little bit this morning when Green Party candidate Dr. Margaret Flowers took the stage and stood between Republican Kathy Szeliga and Democrat Chris Van Hollen, insisting that she be allowed to take part anyway, because democracy and freedom and stuff. And really, why not?

As the debate at the University of Baltimore was about to start, Flowers strolled up the steps to the stage and calmly announced, shouting a bit so she could be heard, “It’s not a full discussion if you don’t have all viewpoints included, and I’m a valid candidate on the ballot, so I appreciate your allowing me to be here today.” She then smiled and stood expectantly for a moment, waiting for the debate to start. After all, she thanked them, and the other two candidates had been introduced, so let’s get on with it. A UB dean asked her to please step aside so the debate could start, and she repeated that she’s a real candidate who needed to be included since she’s running a statewide campaign and can add a lot to the discussion.

The article continues humiliating Dr. Flowers at Wonkette:

It’s a statistical tie right now. There’s no telling what will actually happen until the votes are counted but the fact that it’s this close two weeks from the election is astounding. A Democrat shouldn’t be within shouting distance of the GOP nominee here.

The music was written so one could hear echoes from famous Americana music.

It was released when Glen Gray was in the last season of his career and was re-recording some of the big band hits with the new stereophonic technology, as sort of a mini-revival of the big-band sounds of the previous two decades. You can hear that in a section in the latter part of the tune.

They started popping up out of the woodwork after Obama and when the GOP made no effort to take them to task or distance themselves, the bigotry got even bolder and louder.

If Trump starts his own news network, that will put him in direct competition with the same media outlets that once fawned over him and accepted him unquestioningly in order to ensure continued access. That situation will change rapidly.

Hanging the brandy-soaked monk in cheesecloth, or the fruitcake?

Well, I’d like to add an addendum now to get ahead of what Driftglass notes is the beginning the “Next Big Lie”: In six months, every Republican will swear that Trump’s candidacy was the work of the Clintons and liberals looking to “discredit” American conservatism.

You know how it will go, the “serious” conservatives who buried their heads up Trump’s ass the moment it looked like he might win will insist that they were totally against all his Worst Hits.

“Build The Wall!” = “Well, he was right that we need border security, but we never really believed a wall could be built that would be paid for by Mexico.”

“Ban Islam!” = “He had a point that we need increased scrutiny for immigrants from Islamic countries and a stop on Syrian refugees.”

“Inner Cities Are War Zones” = “For many African Americans, inner cities are horribly crime-ridden and we need to get them more guns and more cops to address that crime.”

“Grab’em By The Pussy” = “Republicans have always had great support for women and want to continue that support by ending the horrors of abortion and rampant feminism.”

“The Election Is Rigged” = “But there were voting irregularities and a lot of questionable incidents that put the whole election and its results into question, no doubt due to influence of Mrs. Clinton. *hint hint*”

In six months, every conservative from here to Azerbaijan will insist that Trump was a Trojan Horse and it was “those people” who opened the gates but not they.

Ayep. Sure, Trump was a boorish asshole who said so much stupid shit that it was on a timer, but he that doesn’t mean his ideas were bad. That will be their argument for years to come, because the alternative is to admit their ideas stink on ice and that would be the death of the party.

Hannity is a race-baiting opportunist who has never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity to be a better person. He’s a perfect reflection of the Trump voters and the GOP base - ignorant, misogynist, and nativist. Always blaming the other for their own problems because the Party of Personal Responsibility™ can never fail - it can only be failed by others who make it impossible for them to be responsible.

The whole thing smacks of a cult. They’re anti-logic, anti-factual, and immoral. Their feelings and beliefs trump all else. It’s why they believe the election is rigged when the facts say otherwise.

It’s why they think voter fraud is a huge problem, when voter suppression is the much bigger problem (and the GOP and Trump campaign admit that is precisely what they’re hoping to accomplish in the final days before the election - both via Voter ID laws, reducing polling places as they did in NC and elsewhere, and in direct voter intimidation and voter suppression efforts):

LITERAL. Which of these statements comes closest to describing your feelings about the Bible?

1. The Bible is the actual word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word. 27%
2. The Bible is the word of God but not everything in it should be taken literally, word for
word. 42%
3. The Bible is a book written by men and is not the word of God. 23%
4. Don’t know. 8%

I think the percentage on choice 1 explains a lot.

I was surprised to learn this afternoon that tomorrow China holds elections for the National People’s Congress, so all classes are canceled and work places must close in the afternoon. That means I have tomorrow off! Yippee!!

Only Party members are able to vote, and the NPC is basically a rubber-stamp body that “approves” the recommendations of the Politburo, after a lot of long winded discussions. It provides the semblance of a “people’s government,” without all the democracy mess jamming up the works.

Even so, the NPC elections are a Big Thing, since the people consider NPC reps as VIPs. Makes sense for people to get some time off to participate in the election, even if it’s mostly a sham.

Yet, in the USA, where the elections are not a sham — despite what one orange-colored candidate claims — everybody is expected to go to work and somehow find time to cast their votes. I’m glad early voting is now a thing.

The more you hear Trump over the past few days, the more it makes Trump in the bunker all the more plausible. Downfall has nothing on Trump. Clearly not interacting with reality in any measurable way. His supporters are likewise divorced from reality and think that everything is a conspiracy against him or that the polls are lying or worse.

This is bad-crazy. And it’s not going to end once the results are tallied. The GOP is intent on obstructing and fighting the Clinton Administration from day 1 - starting with blocking judicial nominations to the Supreme Court. It’s all the more reason why flipping the Senate is absolutely imperative to a functioning government and judiciary.

You can agree with a court decision or not, but the GOP is intent on blocking the Court’s operation. That strikes at the heart of the government. It shows that the GOP doesn’t care about governing or legislating, but scorched earth tactics that leave behind nothing but misery and wealth to be exploited by the wealthy.

Fun with maps.

The reality is that Trump’s behind in nearly every poll relating to the battleground states. Florida goes for Clinton and it’s over, regardless of everything else.
North Carolina goes for Clinton, and it’s over.
Colorado? Same deal.

Trump needs the most unusual and improbable series of events to win.

His only path to win is a series of improbabilities that are unlikely.

His supporters will claim anything but this path is a sign of voter fraud, rigged elections, and rigged polling.

Reality suggests Trump getting crushed nationally, and losing by ~100 delegates. It’s also why nearly all the aggregators and statisticians indicate Clinton chances of winning are expanding.

WTFITS

An anti-discrimination organization said Wednesday it is asking both the Virginia and U.S. attorneys general to investigate Augusta County Commissioner of the Revenue Jean Shrewsbury, Harrisonburg Commissioner of the Revenue Karen Rose and G. Ray Ergenbright, an employee of both offices.

Representatives of ARMED (Americans Resisting Minority and Ethnic Discrimination) point to Ergenbright’s use of Hitler emojis in emails and a social media post.

ARMED said in a letter to Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch that an investigation is needed to determine whether the emojis and the separate social media post are “part of a larger culture of hate that targets minority taxpayers and taxpayers of color.”

King Salim Khalfani, former executive director of the Virginia NAACP and a managing director of ARMED, noted that commissioners of the revenue are constitutional officers funded by the state and local governments. He said the use of the Hitler emojis “is a statewide issue,” and said it is important to determine if taxpayers are being treated differently based on their race, religion or ethnicity.

Ergenbright sent the Hitler emoji emails in question to another Augusta County revenue employee in March. The emails were discovered during a Freedom of Information request from Nexus Services, based in Verona.

I love that “feminized-man” thing. WTF is that even all about?!? Cracks me up because my dad, at the age of 70, about as masculine as a man can be, discovered crocheting and weaving, and he’s turned into quite the pro in the past two years. I’m in awe of his artistry. GO, feminized men!!!

Oathkeepers.

In past incidents and protests, Oath Keepers members have shown up heavily armed and wearing camouflage clothing or apparel with the group’s logo that is sold on its website.

But to monitor polling locations, group leaders are instructing militia members not to wear anything with the Oath Keepers logo or military symbols, acknowledging that their efforts could be seen as voter intimidation.

“If you wear Oath Keepers gear, you can expect to be accused by partisan Democrat activists and the media (essentially the same thing) of attempted voter intimidation,” the letter reads. “Do not make it easy for leftist partisans to attempt to twist this around on you and on this org.”

Rhodes and other leaders of the group advised members to deny belonging to Oath Keepers to anyone who asks, unless they are a police officer.

“We don’t want anyone being able to accuse of us attempting to intimidate voters,” Rhodes said in the video.

Despite the order to go to polling stations unarmed, it remains to be seen how closely the order is followed. Although Oath Keepers has a main board of directors, the group is loosely organized by state and county factions.

What could possibly go wrong?

I went out to get in the car yesterday. I sat down and I noticed the ashtray was pulled out—which of course I would never have done. I try to start the car and it’s dead as a nit. I get out to trudge back inside and go to physically lock it with the key since the electric lock won’t work, and discover somebody’s drilled out the lock cylinder.

Is this a thing? People breaking into your car to steal the electricity from your battery? Would they get back as much as the drill used? I suppose the battery could be gone—if it ever stops raining for a minute I’ll look. But would they have bothered slamming the hood, and risking somebody hearing it?

More dysfunction in Virginia:

Three whistleblowers in the Office of the State Inspector General described on Wednesday potential conflicts of interest between their bosses and the state’s mental health system, which the office is in charge of investigating.

[…]

The three said that Priscilla Smith, director of behavioral health at the Office of the State Inspector General, intentionally removed information from a report and an administrative letter that would have brought to light a “crisis” at Eastern State Hospital before Mitchell died.

They believe Smith removed the information because she worked at Eastern State immediately before she joined the Office of the State Inspector General and still has friends there.

[…]

Hill said inspectors with the Office of the State Inspector General received a complaint about the admissions process at Eastern State in March 2015. The department conducted a review of the hospital’s admissions office in June 2015 as part of an unannounced inspection.

Hill said the hospital was in crisis and that fatigue was affecting staff performance and patient health. One employee had worked 127 hours of overtime in a four-week period.

The information was presented to Smith, Hill said, but she decided to remove it from a report issued after the unannounced inspection.

It was not included in the Office of the State Inspector General’s report about Mitchell’s death, and Smith removed it from a letter sent to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services because she deemed it to be unrelated, Hill said.

Trump Surrogate Ted Nugent: Hillary Clinton Is A “Devilbitch,” “VOTE TRUMP!”

National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent called Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton a “devilbitch” moments after promoting a Donald Trump presidential campaign video that he appears in.

In an October 27 post on his Facebook page, Nugent wrote of Clinton, “The devilbitch hates everything good about America! VOTE TRUMP!” while promoting an NRA attack on the Democratic nominee. The post came moments after Nugent shared a Trump campaign video, which he is featured in, that discusses hunting and the Second Amendment:

When I was a grad student, I took off for a weekend to see my girlfriend. I had a cat, and would leave the bedroom window open for her to get in and out. I figured I lived on the second floor of a busy apartment building. What could go wrong?

Came back on Sunday night. My door was ajar. Stereo was gone. TV was gone. Cheezy clockradio was gone. My jar of pennies was gone. Pennies!

The cat was OK.

They hit my neighbors downstairs, too. They had also left a window unlocked. The burglars pretended to be house painters. The cops said they’d been doing quite well for themselves in the neighborhood.

Ouchie. The margin isn’t closing. It’s going in the opposite direction. Can’t imagine why that’d be. Perhaps it’s the fact that people are realizing how spectacularly awful Trump is.

Now, if only the down-ticket races are affected and the GOP loses ground there….

While that 54-28 margin is certainly nice, it seems odd that there are 18% other-party or “don’t know”. But then, it’s reliably-blue California: not much to worry about. Except those down-ticket and State races: it looks like the statehouse is safely (D), but a few more Congressional seats wouldn’t hurt (especially if it gets Darryl Issa the hook)

re: #226 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

So…this happened:

What a week….

Man, that sucks. Never heard of them drilling out the lock. If someone goes to that extend you’d think they’d steal the whole car.

Wish I could say I’m shocked but I’m not. The hypocrisy of the GOP on this issue really pisses me off. Not to mention on Benghazi where they want to present a bullshit narrative to the American people that Benghazi was unique (It wasn’t and we have actually had fewer Americans die at embassy and consulates in the Obama presidency than the Bush one) but you’d never know that if you just listened to teh GOP’s bullshit.

I’m trying to find the numbers, but I remember the youth vote being quite energized for Ventura. I was in college at the time and it was my first election. Anecdotally, it was true — all the young men around me wanted to vote for Jesse the Body because of the WWF. (I was never a wrestling fan as a kid, and voted for Humphrey, natch.)

Statewide, though, it was the Ross Perot effect on a smaller scale, with the two “establishment” candidates going very negative, and mini-Perot picking up the pieces and eking out a win by ~60k votes.

As a big pro-wrestling fan, it was fascinating to watch at the time. Basically the Dem and GOP candidates burned the house down with their attacks on each other (and spectacularly mediocre campaigns). Slowly people were ditching both guys and flirting with Jesse.

Then a couple of weeks before the election, that process went into overdrive. Both Democrat and Republican bottomed out, and Jesse won with 37%. Yay, vote-splitting.

Lots of people donated to the CF. Ok. Joe and gang may have had a point if there had been some line crossing which did not seem to be there. They just wanted it to be there.

So, what was their end game? And I finally figured it out.

re: #333 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

I used to live five hours from Denver by car. We considered a day trip to Denver normal. I once went with a friend expressly for the purpose of buying Haagen Dasz ice cream and bringing it back for our workmates. If I’d done that on the East Coast, people would have thought us nuts.

This was before H-D was more widely available, in the dim times, when dinosaurs roamed freely across the Front Range.

Good story, but how did you keep the ice cream frozen on a five-hour trip? You must have had a hella good cooler…..

re: #332 lawhawk

SLC to Colorado Springs is 9 hours driving, mostly because there’s a whole lot of Rocky Mountains (Wasatch Range) to go through. Beautiful country to be sure, but not exactly a hop on Acela to shift resources from NYC to DC.

It’s a 2 hour flight.

Trump doesn’t get logistics. Figures.

Among other things, like prioritizing limited resources.

No Country For Old Haters  Oct 27, 2016 • 10:03:19am

In addition to dropping Vine, Twitter claims that they’re going to marginalize the crazies, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Twitter explained the reasoning behind this overhaul to its service in its letter to shareholders:
All the initiatives above are focused on enabling people to consume and express themselves freely; freedom of expression is core to who we are. Everyone on Twitter should feel safe expressing diverse opinions and beliefs and targeted behavior that harasses or threatens others to silence another person’s voice is unacceptable to us and a violation of our policies.

The company will also introduce new policies and safety features in November to help people feel more comfortable with the service. Twitter as a social network can be hard for many people to understand, and even those who do see the service’s value might leave after having a bad experience with another user, so it makes sense for the company to plan changes that will make it seem much more inviting and worth visiting on a regular basis.

This illustration reminds me about something I was going to mention.

I got a call about 9:30 this morning and it was a poll. They asked is I was satisfied with the President…press 1 yes, 2, no. Then they asked if I was satisfied with Congress.

And then they asked if I thought women were equal to men? Then if I knew there was no language in the Constitution that said men and women were equal. Then it asked if I thought men and women were equal in the language of the State Constitution, etc.

It then asked if I would support Equal Rights on a federal level and then a state level.

It closed by asking if I was a Democrat, Republican, Independent, etc.

It has been a long time since I heard anything about an Equal Rights Amendment and a poll asking about men and women being equal.

Anyone else get a polling call like this? Anyone know if there is again a push for another ERA?

Or, might this be an indication that if Hillary gets in office as President, there will be a new push for an ERA?

It really sort of came out of nowhere. But, it is good to see there is still some thinking going on.

Strategists in both parties attribute that, in part, to the lower number of early voting sites for the first week, which could change once the additional 12 sites open Thursday.

Nowicki: The Clinton campaign by far has the better ground game. As of earlier this month, the Democrats had 161 staffers and 32 offices in Arizona. The Trump doesn’t have much of a ground operation and it seems like Trump isn’t interesting in investing money here. Trump mostly is relying on personal appearances and earned media. I know you know the answers, but the only reason it’s a scandal is:
1. Bill’s a Democrat,
2. Every Republican has known since Bill became governor of Arkansas that Hillary would run, and most likely win, the presidency if they couldn’t stop her.

From the Salon article:

National Review had come of age alongside the civil rights movement, having published its first issue a year after the Brown v. Board of Education decision that outlawed segregation in public schools and two weeks before the arrest of Rosa Parks. From the beginning, National Review could have endorsed the traditionalist notion that changes should come slowly within a society but should happen nonetheless, and that the rule of law need be respected above all else. Or it could have taken a libertarian stance that the state shouldn’t be in the business of segregating people at all.

But it didn’t take either of these paths. Instead, it fomented a direct assault against civil rights, embracing nearly all of the most offensive and discredited arguments against the movement, including the idea that black people were inherently inferior to white people. It routinely dressed up the racist resistance to civil rights with respectable-sounding arguments about states’ rights and constitutional law. As a signal crafter of conservative talking points in the midcentury years, throughout the 1950s and 1960s National Review developed arguments to oppose every motion in favor of civil rights, indiscriminately using sometimes contradictory ideas in order to pursue a single goal: the continued subjugation of America’s black people.

GHWB went off into retirement, and has worked thru his own foundation. He also partnered with Clinton on the Clinton Foundation esp., re: Haiti and other natural disaster response.

GWB has mostly gone off into retirement quietly. If he’s giving paid speeches, no one is really arguing about it (he was also wealthy enough before being president to be a part owner of the Rangers and various oil businesses)

Carter has done humanitarian works, particularly through Habitat For Humanity. Scandal free AFAIK.

Clinton has not only done a high profile foundation, but has made quite a bit of coin on the speaking gig circuit. Apparently this is the thing that his opponents/rivals hate - that he’s come from nothing (the guy from Hope) and has gotten wealthy through everything. The Foundation is separate, but doesn’t stop the nuts from claiming he’s the one profiting from it all.

If I was Hilary I would have a team of people investigating everyone of those assholes for whatever I could find to use against them.

And she is Hillary and I think it safe to say the team is already in place and doing just that.

I like Hillary, but I also know she can play politics with the best of them. I think she would be a better political gamer than Obama when it comes to digging dirt.

If Hillary is elected, Congress is in for a ride they may not really be prepared for. They may think they are, but they aren’t.

I know one thing. A Hillary Clinton presidency is going to give us a lot to discuss here at LGF.

More ratfuckery, courtesy of RCP.

They have PA as toss-up in their map.

Only problem with that is that Clinton’s got a stable lead of approximately 5 points. She’s never been behind in the RCP polling average in PA, so there’s no reason to consider this a tossup unless RCP is making an editorial decision to try and make things closer than they really are.

Just thought I’d mention again how good the economy is doing. It was reported today that there were only 258k new unemployment claims last week, the 86th consecutive week below 300,000, the first time that has happened since 1970. And since the work force is much larger now than it was nearly a half century ago, that means American workers are enjoying an unprecedented level of job security. Last month was also the 72nd consecutive month of job creation; that’s six years since the last time the US had a net job loss in a month, back in September 2010. And of course it was recently reported that America’s full-time workers got a 3% raise over the last year, giving them a record high median weekly wage. As usual, the economy grows when Democrats are in the White House.

I’ve been reading reactions to this story all morning. Many point out that it’s not actual ‘voter suppression’, which involves using legal and extra-legal means to prevent people from voting. This is just negative advertizing.

The other thing is, nothing is really new here.

Because they’re Breitbarts, they believe to the depths of their souls that nobody but them knows about these things, that nobody has covered the Bill Clinton sex scandals, that nobody has heard HRC’s unfortunate ‘superpredator’ remark, and that nobody knew Clinton was running a campaign against Sanders. They’ve believed since 1992 that all they had to do was say the JUST right thing, with all the words in JUST the right order, and suddenly everyone would say, “Oh, my god! You’re right! I never realized that!”

That’s why it was so funny listening to Noot and Megyn, where Noot bitches that she’s paying too much attention to Trump’s sexual assault accusers - “you’re fascinated by sex!” - and not enough to Bill Clinton’s. His frustration over this is clear - ‘Why are you paying attention to my nominee’s numerous accusers who confirm what he himself said he does, and not about the important issues - like the other nominee’s husband’s accusers who all had their stories litigated in the press 20 years ago?’

re: #431 electrotek

What I say is that while it was wrong, it’s nothing that hasn’t been done by lots of other people. And I also then say that while that doesn’t make it right, it has been a pretty commonplace event in politics, and that Clinton has fairly obviously been singled out because of an extremely hostile media environment that is determined to paint her as untrustworthy and evil, and has done so deliberately for thirty years.

When I talk politics, I never use the argument that ‘Trump is worse’. It’s so obviously true that it doesn’t need repeating, and using it simply moves the argument directly to areas that idiots are comfortable with, namely coming up with more hyperbolic arguments and attacks. I always talk up Hillary, because her record is exemplary and her qualifications unparalleled. I say that even I once thought she was untrustworthy because that’s what has been said about her for decades. But while nobody in politics has a completely clean record, she has been investigated, scrutinised, and smeared for thirty years. Her opponents have spent three decades and hundreds of millions of dollars trying to find something to charge her with, something to bring her down, and they have found nothing. They are reduced to making up lesbian love affairs, fabricating Benghazi and email scandals, and hammering the ‘untrustworthy’ meme on every news channel. And yet she has never been charged, never been sanctioned, and has consistently been rated as the most honest of any current political figure by fact-checking sites. After a lifetime in public service and thirty years of fruitless investigations, she has never been charged with anything. This doesn’t make her untrustworthy. By political standards, this makes her a fucking saint.

I find that this argument not only resonates, but also persuades.

It’s people like her, my grandmother, and others that I just wish could talk to these right wing women who insist they don’t need feminism. Maybe that sounds wrong for me as a man to say but I think so many people don’t appreciate the sacrifices made to make the present a better life than previous generations had whether that’s in racial equality, gender equality, etc.

There’s a movie coming out soon called “Good Girls Revolt”, about a time at Newsweek magazine.

Good Girls Revolt - “Girls Don’t Do Rewrites” (Official Clip)

The magazine staff was about half/half M/F. The women were all brilliant — Radcliffe phi beta kappas, Fulbright scholars, etc. The men were maybe a few brilliant, but mostly mediocre. They all did the same work… but the women were called “researchers”, the men were called “writers” and paid twice as much.

There was a strike, a lawsuit, etc. This was recent enough that Eleanor Holmes Norton was the women’s attorney.
