I’d like to see Jamie Raskin do this to our own Creature Without Shame.

Boris doesn’t have the devoted zombie cult that will sacrifice everything for him; he just has a solid majority in Parliament who will not vote to replace him. Raskin can do this but the solid 60% of Republicans who demand that the party accept that Trump won won’t listen and won’t care. We have a 5th Column embedded in our nation and for now these adherents will not stop until Trump is reinstated or our nation is torn apart.

Sigh. I miss Joe and Anymouse. And am so sorry that Teleskiguy provoked that confrontation that led to his dismissal.

Agree. However, Anymouse tended to attack Christians with a broad brush and never wanted to acknowledge that was inappropriate.

I don’t do any social media and only joined here because CuriousLurker so closely reflected my own views on religion.

I’ve seen too many total assholes who give their faith a bad name. But I’ve also known some amazing people whose faith drove them to make great sacrifices to help others. So the broad brush tended to piss me off.

I miss Joe, and am sad that he left due to some criticism. This blog has a caring community but that doesn’t mean complete acceptance of everything said. But discussion of various perspectives is part of what makes this community valuable.

I also miss teleskiguy, and always tried to support him both in his joys and his struggles. His departure disappointed me but I feel it’s his loss.

Bottom line is it makes me cranky. But then, what doesn’t?

He found himself persecuted for being an atheist.

It took me a long time to meet Christians who simply live and practice their faith quietly and non-judgmentally. Not enough to convert me, but enough to convince me that there are redeeming features to the religion if you look in the right places.

Joe did nothing to deserve being shit on. And Teli was a grenade that periodically went off. Having fought depression all my life I got the feeling his demons occasionally dragged him.
But Teli pulled the pin on the way out. Trashed this place just because he could. Pulled what he said Gus pulled on him. On everyone.
He learned nothing.

I think of the guy I sat next to on a plane a few years back, when we were stuck for about 10-15 minutes without a jetway operator. He was so impatient to get off the plane, I thought he was going to physically jump from the open cabin door and run into the airport. My guess is that the pilot had some nasty crosswinds. The pilot did the right thing, TOGA is never fun or easy, I’ve been on a few planes doing it, including a fully loaded 747-200. Also, the A321 Neo is a long plane, about as long as the 757. I’m flying it to Kona in a month, haven’t been on the Neo yet, looking forward to it. The A321 Neo and its new LR (flying), and XLR (still being built) are the planes that finally replace the 757. The 757 was a beast, it could fly long ETOPS routes, as well as short hops. It could operate well in high/heat airports and with shorter runways. Boeing rues the day it stopped making it, the last one made was in 2015.

How a new proposal to stop Trump from stealing the 2024 election could backfire
by Judd Legum
popular.info

The proposal being advocated by some Democrats to require a supermajority to reject a slate of electors would make combating a rogue Governor like Perdue very difficult. A relatively small number of Trump headliners in the House (less than 150) would be all that’s necessary for Congress to rubber-stamp a stolen election.

Republicans who have endorsed Trump’s false claims of election fraud are also running for governor in the swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

House Administration Committee proposal would “authorize candidates to seek injunctive relief” if a Governor submitted an inaccurate slate of electors to Congress. But it’s unclear how willing courts would be to intervene in those circumstances. And the idea that the judiciary — and ultimately the Supreme Court — will insulate the process from political gamesmanship is antiquated.

Former President Donald Trump’s political action committee donated $1 million to the conservative nonprofit organization where his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, is a senior partner,” NBC News reports.

“The contribution to Meadows’s nonprofit stands out both for its size and for its timing. On July 1, the House voted to establish a select committee to investigate the Capitol attack. Trump’s PAC donated to the Conservative Partnership Institute, which bills itself as a training ground for conservative staff and elected officials, on July 26.”

From the CD via the Morning News Letter in the New York Times (jan. 31, 2022):

Average death rate from Oct. to Nov. 2021

Unvaccinated: 7.8

Vaccinated, no booster: 0.6

+Booster 0.1

This intrigues me. My math sucks. My grasp of statistics is even worse. Does this mean that if I were in a room with a 100 random people, and death was at the front pulling numbers out of a little jury selection spinning bingo selector, that roughly 8 out of 100 people would die, but that the unvaccinated people would simply have to die when their number is called, whereas the vaccinated people would get to have a reroll 15 times (roughly 8 divided by .5), whereas a boosted person would in a sense get to say “reroll” SEVENTY EIGHT times to death, if their number got called? I know I’m oversimplifying that wildly, but I’m trying to think of this in a way that could be possibly used to help unvaxxed people understand this in a way that the data might not immediately do for them.

Like this: Say you went to a massive sportsball event with 100,000 people, and all of them caught COVID. If all of them were unvaccinated, 8 of them would die within a month. (Note: This is not the same as the disease’s death rate, as we’ve seen people hang on for a long time in the hospital before expiring.) If they were vaccinated but not boosted, there’d be a 60/40 chance that one person would die within the month. If they were all boosted, there’d be a 1-in-10 chance that one person would die within a month.

For the *nixers:

Polkit, a system-wide privilege manager for Unix-like operating systems, contains a 12-year-old memory-corruption vulnerability that grants attackers root privileges on systems running most major Linux distributions, warn researchers at security firm Qualys. Users can execute commands with high privileges using Polkit’s pkexec component, followed by the command; people with limited system control can exploit the PwnKit flaw in pkexec to escalate privileges all the way to root. According to Qualys’ Bharat Jogi, “The most likely attack scenario is from an internal threat where a malicious user can escalate from no privileges whatsoever to full root privileges. From an external threat perspective, if an attacker has been able to gain foothold on a system via another vulnerability or a password breach, that attacker can then escalate to full root privileges through this vulnerability.” A separate source released proof-of-concept exploit code; researchers warn PwnKit’s exploitation in the wild is inevitable.

My mother-in-law, who is 80, keeps insisting on answering her cell phone. When it’s a marketer, she says she asks for that person’s senior VP and the person inevitably hangs up.

I mean, we should be grateful she’s at least aware enough to be skeptical of these calls, but she’s convinced that every worker in America lives in fear of their senior VP getting Involved in a situation. LIke, just asking for a manager wouldn’t do it. No sir, only the senior VP can save the day here.

Given her egomania, I’m guessing that was the title of her last few jobs prior to retirement were.

I am sure everyone has seen this, but I never caught his name before:

Wild dashcam footage has emerged of the moment a Florida man opened fire on another driver during a heated road-rage shooting in the middle of a busy interstate.

Eric Popper, 30, was arrested over the June 2021 ordeal on I-95 in Miami after authorities said he fired nearly a dozen shots at the passing motorist.

The chilling video from Popper’s own dashcam, which was only made public Saturday by radio host Andy Slater, showed him shooting through his own windshield as he aimed for the other driver.

Investigators said the ordeal unfolded when Popper, who was driving his black Toyota Venza, abruptly cut off the other driver as he changed lanes in the morning rush hour, Local10 reported.

The dashcam video shows Popper glancing in his rear-view mirror and shouting “F-k off” as the other driver honked his horn.

Popper then allegedly slammed on his brakes as the driver started tailgating him and making hand gestures out the window, authorities said.

Joe Rogan has been criticised for helping spread misinformation on his podcast.

Spotify reportedly paid $100m (£75m) in 2020 for rights to The Joe Rogan Experience, which is the streaming service’s top podcast. It is reportedly downloaded almost 200 million times a month.

On the show, the US broadcaster hosts a wide variety of guests who discuss their views on a range of topics - but some episodes have featured false and misleading claims.

Here are four of them fact-checked.

I just got a notice a survey in the mail from my insurer that I am apparently required to fill out and mail back to prevent “possible future delays in claim processing”. Not sure why I can’t do this online, but sure let’s waste more paper.

What really irks me though is that this company couldn’t even be bothered to include a prepaid return envelope for me to use to mail the survey back. I have to supply my own stamp.

They will call his bluff when they know they hold all the cards, not before. It is infuriating but you don’t want to prosecute until you are absolutely certain you will convict.

For now, let him flail about like an out of control firehose. Having him come unglued and admit what he was really up to is more sauce for the goose.

When Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) was asked about the Build Back Better Act, he responded: “What Build Back Better bill? I don’t know what you guys are talking about.”

When asked if he’s had any talks on the matter since December, he added: “No, no, no, no. It’s dead.”

Write a new bill
Only put in things he will support…there are a lot
Call it the Manchin Recovery Bill or whatever, as long as its named after him

No lie told!

Mini Itx former Windows Storage space installation

I decided to take this thing apart because I have a new motherboard coming that will fit in there. I had three 3TB hard drives in it configured with Win storage spaces but it was surplus to my needs and I had retired it to a shelf in the basement. I decided I would use this other box for the new build:

Thermaltake box

I ended up with several hard drives, including the 3 from the storage spaces box. I figured I could easily reformat those and put them back for spares for my current NAS.

Wrong! I put one drive into an external USB thingy but it wouldn’t show in file manager. It wouldn’t even show up in Windows disk manager. After much time with the google I stumbled across a method that would let me take it out of read only mode via power shell after wading through a bunch of notifications that my storage space was severely degraded and need attention. I finally finished the formatting this morning in time for lunch.

I don’t think NFTs are a worthless idea. Yes, the drawings of apes in tophats are just weird and seem very stupid. But there are some legitimate reasons for NFTs; one is that musicians can have more control over their music, track resales and collect royalties without having to go through a label or streaming service. And real artists (not the bored ape weirdos) can do the same. For real collectibles, this is also a way for the collector to know the provenance of the art.

Yeah, there are scams and fads happening, but I hesitate to condemn the whole concept because it has some real benefits as well.

I happen to agree. The cryptobros are the same as any other weird Internet bros, and they make the technology look bad. But there is, I think, a very valid use case to be had for artists who want to market their works online in a secure fashion.
