I had a Herman’s Hermits album with a cover of that song when I was about 11 years old. My mom’s mom lived with us. One day I asked her about the words for this song (including the “satan should be her name” line. She just said that it didn’t seem like a very nice song.

David Frum and Tucker Carlson used to run in the same circles and knew each other. When Frum went Never Trump, he became a heretic and easy target to Carlson. (Carlson, despite his posturing is apparently quite the coward.)

Carlson has been sniping at Frum from his TV show. And Frum is sniping back in twitter.

Imho - Frum is a lot smarter, more honest and far less of a grifter than Carlson.

Some thoughts:

I think tfg conned Putin into this mess in Ukraine. He played the con and convinced Putin that he (tfg) would get the US out of NATO and that the US would look away (wink, wink) if Putin elected to go on any adventures into other sovereign countries. Tfg also delayed and held back defensive weapons that Congress was willing to send to Ukraine. When tfg lost the election he continued to con Putin into believing the election was stolen and that tfg would eventually return to power. To go along with this con, tfg also convinced Putin that Biden was a senile old man who could be pushed around and not fight back. Keep in mind that every election Putin won was “fixed” so it would be easy for him to believe tfg could do the same. Putin was tfg’s ultimate con outside the US.

I find the report of a Ukrainian pilot becoming an ACE+ interesting and very plausible. I’m pretty sure that there are US and NATO AWACS planes flying “lazy eights” in the friendly skies of the neighboring NATO countries providing backup to the Ukrainian fighters. An AWACS flying at over 40,000 ASL can cover an amazing amount of Ukrainian (and Russian) airspace. It’s nice to have this amount of coverage for your “six”.

It appears Russia has not made much of an effort to take control of the borders between Ukraine and the NATO countries. Very poor planning on their part. Tons of supplies will be pouring uncontested into Ukraine. Russia does not have enough troops in the theater to completely seal all of the borders.

I realize Putin wants to capture Kyiv, and suppose he meets that goal. How does he keep it? Kyiv has a population of nearly 3 million citizens. Very pissed off citizens. I think it would take as many as 50,000 troops to keep it. Each and every Russian patrol and vehicle will be a target of intense gorilla warfare. A lot of Russian blood will be spilled and armor burned up on the streets. How long will the military and the Russian populace be willing to accept such losses.

Putin has made a big mistake.

Trump and his loyal media have a genius in persuading others of lies about him and his policies. Sigh, it is discouraging that so many have bought into the belief that somehow Putin respected Trump and would never have attacked Ukraine if he had retained office.

We chatted with our brother today. As loyal brainwashed member of the cult, he really believes that Biden is the worst President ever and Trump is this strong representative of the best in America. As he pointed out, it was Trump who first provided javelins to Ukraine, a weapon that Obama never did. He was strongly opposed to Putin’s aspirations even before the invasion and keeps pointing out that Russia has nothing except natural resources to sell and their economy is not competitive in the modern world. He is fully enthusiastic about our supplying weaponry to help Ukraine and throwing Russian businesses off SWIFT. He also discussed the hazards of warfare in an urban environment and was very hopeful that the citizenry could inflict heavy damage on the invading and later occupying forces.

Snipers throughout the history of urban warfare have been a dominating feature due to their ability to cause extreme havoc on attacking forces in urban terrain.

If your civilian forces include expert marksmen, that is an effective strategy. But what about all those untrained citizens who have been handed guns? It not as though they have training to target someone at a distance.

Even if they don’t hit all the time, shots firing in the right direction will cause problems for Russian troops. They will have to react. And most people can learn to compensate.

This is basically the same thing as why the crossbow was invented. It’s a numbers game.

On your specific question;

That is, they do not know how good the guy shooting at them is. So the enemy who want to survive generally have to assume that the shooter is really good. And this slows them down and makes them more vulnerable to other groups.

And to be honest, despite the movies and books glorifying war most combat shooting is particularly awful.

During World War 2, my father was stationed in England. One day he was told to take an infantry company of 100 soldiers out to the firing range.

In the middle of the shooting, a fox ran down the line of targets. All 100 trained infantryman (preparing to invade Europe and fight Germans) shot at it. And everyone of them missed.

When bullets are flying, you assume worst case. If a DM is taking shots in my direction I’m going to be like the usual US Army soldier - behind something or in a vehicle or the like screaming into my microphone with a call for fire :)

Even a bozo like me can hit a person center mass shooting a Crossman 760 bb/pellet gun carbine from the hip. Just ask my friend Scott after he fired on me with his bb gun. That was the very last time he shot at me. I was pressurized to the max to take out the blackbird that attacked me as I walked past his tree on the street. I heard a bb whizz by me and I turned and fired back, pretty much automatically. The bb went through his sweater, and shirt, and skin. he had to squeeze it out.

That’s where machine guns come in handy. We were at Grafenwöhr doing the annual tank gunnery tables and several wild boar ran across the range at night. M-60A3’s had the best thermal sights of the 20th century in them and we whacked 4 hogs that night. The Germans would get extremely unhappy about that when/if they found out but this was when we still had Army cooks. That was a couple of insanely great pork and egg breakfasts for the battalion!

My guess from the videos I’ve seen is they’re getting a battle pack - for 30 round magazines that’s 210 rounds which is the standard combat load out of 7 magazines. I’d be willing to bet they have resupply points set up for those who need it.

Heh, you reminded me of a story.

When I was a newly minted Second Lieutenant, I was a “Forward Observer”(aka FO). My job was to crawl around the front lines spot the enemy and radio the location back to the “Fire Direction Center” (aka FDC).

The FDC would calculate the location and translate into data the gunbunnies, er… I mean cannon crew, would use to aim the cannons, load the right ammunition and fire.

The radio operator for one FDC sounded like he was screaming and one step short of hysteria.

We FO’s were like WTF?

So one day when things were quiet we went back to that FDC and made inquiry. Which cracked up the entire FDC. They knew all about this radio operator. So they introduced us to him and allowed us to watch as he handled some radio traffic.

What we heard in person was an absolutely normal person talking in an absolutely normal and calm voice.

Listening to the exact same call as it came from the radio, he sounded like he was screaming on the edge of hysteria.

I think that the FDC kept him as Radio Operator purely for the entertainment value.

When you have doubts, remember that the US military in the 60s and 70s was probably 20x stronger than what Russia is right now.

The Ukrainians have something they want to defend fiercely, a charismatic leader, and an opponent not really up to the job. Yes, Putin could order massive bombing, just like we did in Vietnam. And it will more than likely have the same effect inside, and only make it worse for Russia outside.

That does make me wonder what the war of 1812 would have been like with modern communications and social media. Would George III interfere? Doubtful. Not his style. But Ft McHenry holding out against the RN & RM? That might have been an even bigger deal.

New Orleans wouldn’t have happened though. With modern communications the fact that the treaty was signed would have prevented that battle from happening, prevented Jackson from becoming a hero and prevented the “trail of tears”…

Just a guess: it was going to be a “victory speech” proclaiming their glorious victory over the miserable Ukrainian “Nazis”, but is now going to have be slightly re-edited?

Or that it was originally supposed to be delivered from the dais of the [Former] Ukrainian Parliament House in Kyiv, but that there have been some scheduling problems with the venue’s management….

This was published by a Swedish publisher of military literature. Apparently they have an Oleg, ex army officer, now historian, reporting from Kiev. MIght be propaganda as usual but an interesting read.
This is possible the same battle. Interesting to follow on google earth. The bridge mentioned below is probably a large bridge situated at the end of a large open area. The Ukrainians have a lot of good firing positions for that area.
Google translate was used from swedish.

Russian troops want to be evacuated?
Update from Oleg: Russian communication has been eavesdropped on and translated.
(Today 10.36)
The Ukrainian military intercepted the Russian military’s talks.
On the audio recording, you can hear the Russian intruders asking to be evacuated from Ukraine. This was reported to the UNIAN news agency by the press officer of the National Guard Khariton Starsky. “We intercepted the Russian negotiations. They were defeated near Gostomel. It was one of the Russian columns that went to Kyiv. Ukrainians bombed them in the Irpen region. The invaders are asking to be evacuated from Ukraine. Very historic,” said Starsky.
Here is Oleg’s own translation of the communication:
“Write it down. On the bridge from Gostomel to Kiev we were under fire. Our vehicles are destroyed .. Completely. Part of us … we move towards the airport through the forest. Now we think about what happens next .. Forward to the district (to the commander). We need support, help us. That is, we need to be pulled out. “

Personally, I never expected the Russian Army to perform this poorly. Maybe we all should have - I know that military analysts over the years have said that from a conventional combat POV, Russia is, at best, a regional power.

But having difficulty conquering your next-door neighbor? Yeesh, that’s a bad look. And that falls squarely on the shoulders of their Commander-in-Chief, Vladimir Putin.

By “negotiations,” they mean a live broadcast of whichever unlucky fuckers they could catch (possibly including Zelensky) being forced at gunpoint to sign the surrender of Ukraine while Putin gloated.

I’ve no doubt that Vlad has woken up the last few mornings asking if Zelensky is dead and then swearing up a blue streak when told he not only lives but Kyiv still stands.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for all those poor people.

You guys know that I love curling. There are a couple of teams that come over from Russia to play in certain tourneys. I irrationally hate them. I remind myself that they’re just people, like when Trump was my president. It is completely irrational. But I just hate when they win. (I hated the Olympics even more because they were allowed to play at all, but that’s another story.)

I try to remember these are people born into their circumstances. And that video makes me sad for them. They all are going to suffer so much, and for a long time. And even when Putin is dead and gone who knows if their lives will improve.

Maybe a Zelensky kind of person will come up for Russia.

Sorry, I’m feeling blue this morning. Sad for all the unnecessary suffering.

Looks like the Turks may be coming around….

Turkey called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “war” on Sunday in a rhetorical shift that could pave the way for the NATO member nation to enact an international pact limiting Russian naval passage to the Black Sea.

Under the 1936 Montreux Convention, Turkey has control over the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits that connect the Mediterranean and Black seas and can limit the passage of warships during wartime or if threatened.

Balancing its Western commitments and close ties to Moscow, Ankara has said the Russian attack is unacceptable but until Sunday had not described the situation as a war.

“On the fourth day of the Ukraine war, we repeat President (Tayyip) Erdogan’s call for an immediate halt of Russian attacks and the start of ceasefire negotiations,” presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin said on Twitter.

Hubris. Sheer fucking hubris.

It looks as though the initial plan was to knock out Ukrainian AA and establish air dominance within the first 12-24 hours. Missile and artillery strikes were supposed to accomplish this, based upon dated intel data on the belief that it would be impossible to move such units on short notice. Once the AA was down, MiG-29s and Su-27s would sweep in and shoot down anything in the air, while tactical bombers like Su-25s would knock out what was on the ground. The combined result would be that nothing flew over Ukraine without Russia’s permission.

Once Russia controlled the skies over Ukraine, next step is taking major population centers. Send in VDV paratroopers to capture and hold any airports and airfields big enough to land transport planes, then start trucking in troops by the hundreds. By the time the defenders realize what’s going on, they’re fending off attacks from their own back lines as hordes of troops are swarming over their positions. Between the initial bombardment and the swarms of troops, what you’re expecting then is for the leadership to shit themselves and either flee or beg for surrender.

It begins.

This is scathing:

With the beginning of the Russian “special operation” in Ukraine (that’s what Roskomnadzor tells us to call it under the threat of closing the newspaper), when peaceful Russian missiles began to hit Ukrainian “military facilities” inhabited by civilians for some reason (Roskomnadzor), the business world began to turn away from Russia. Even before the full-scale imposition of sanctions. The manager of the international logistics company Uni International (USA), Mikhail Bobryshev, claims that cargo transportation to and from Russia fell before our eyes. Carriers on the go change the direction of transport, redirect cargo to other countries that went to Russia.

_____

In addition to the fact that Russia will be deprived of imports, Movchan believes, there is a high probability that an embargo on the supply of hydrocarbons from Russia will be introduced.

“The world will survive the rise in prices, the world will survive the deficit,” the financier continues, “but in conjunction with the freezing of the reserves of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which is now being talked about as an almost accepted decision, this could mean the end of the Russian economy. That is, it is clear that the economy always exists, but it will be the economy of Venezuela. And what do you want if the country unleashed bloodshed?

Andrey Zaostrovtsev, a professor at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, also agrees that recent events threaten to collapse the economy.

“Yesterday I went to the DNS electronics store, and we joked with the seller that soon they will have one Horizon TV on the shelves,” he says. - As for the ruble, for now the Central Bank has the resources to support its exchange rate, but this will not last long. In 2014, the Central Bank tried to keep the ruble for two months, then stopped. In December 2014, there was a complete collapse, then the market found some kind of balance. In general, if you want to see our possible near future, then look at Venezuela, which, by the way, has the largest oil reserves per capita. It was one of the most prosperous Latin American countries, but politics destroys the economy pretty quickly.

Cisterns are used everywhere to store water. (For example, there is a massive cistern system under San Francisco reserved for firefighting in case water is cut off from an earthquake or other disaster.)

The cysterns referred to here would be military fresh water trucks, to supply troops in the field.

I honestly shocked by how badly Russia is doing. Whatever may come of this, because Putin is kinda crazy so who knows how far he will go in regard to killing civilians, it’s really laid bare that Russia is a mouse in a bear suit.

Like most things, it is probably half one thing, and half another. Yes, conscripted armies tend not to be great. It’s also true that it’s hard to demonstrate your best fighting skills when pensioners are coming out to either blockade your tank column or use it for fire bomb practice. They look the same. They speak often the same language. Hell, as much as I’d enjoy it if most everybody in the upstate disappeared, I’d feel some sadness if I were in a tank using the .50 cal on them.

Cisterns are used everywhere to store water. (For example, there is a massive cistern system under San Francisco reserved for firefighting in case water is cut off from an earthquake or other disaster.)

That’s what I thought. I just found it interesting the military doesn’t have a convoluted name for them.

The cysterns referred to here would be military fresh water trucks, to supply troops in the field.

Among other recommendations, the updated guidance provides that businesses are advised to no longer require facial coverings for employees, as there is no proven significant clinical benefit for facial coverings among the general population

There is not strong evidence that facial coverings reduce the transmission of respiratory viruses.

Scientists released a pair of extensive studies on Saturday that point to a market in Wuhan, China, as the origin of the coronavirus pandemic,” the New York Times reports,

“Analyzing data from a variety of sources, they concluded that the coronavirus was very likely present in live mammals sold in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in late 2019 and suggested that the virus twice spilled over into people working or shopping there. They said they found no support for an alternate theory that the coronavirus escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan.”

There’s been speculation for years about Russia’s aging nuclear weapons stockpile. Having a nuclear arsenal is damned expensive and Russia isn’t exactly a global economic superpower. Their GDP is roughly the same size as Los Angeles, California.

And when those sanctions start to bite, I reckon that Russia’s GDP will fall off a cliff. They’ll become a Venezuela with nukes.

The photos of their tanks shows how little maintenance they’ve had. Exposed wires, really old school controls. I’m having a hard time imagining their maintaining their nuclear stockpile. Not sure if I’m more afraid of their maintaining it or not maintaining it.

I’ve also been pretty surprised by just how much of a pigsty the inside of those tanks are. For you guys and gals with experience, is that normal? I understand you don’t want to leave stuff behind, but I’d have thought you’d maintain your surroundings better by burying rubbish and not just leaving it everywhere in your tank.

These talks should be interesting. Contrary to the pre-war predictions, Zelensky is the one who’s actually bargaining from a strong position, since Russia has totally failed to achieve any of its operational goals and is slowly losing any remaining momentum it initially had. All the major cities remain unconquered, morale remains high despite days of terror and reprisal attacks, and the country continues to control its own airspace. And while Ukraine is enjoying greater international support than before the war, Russia has virtually no allies left and the few that it thought it could buy or pressure into supporting it are slowly gravitating away.

The war’s lost, the only thing Vlad can do now is walk away before total collapse sets in.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to see an end game for Putin that puts Russia in anything but a far worse situation than prior to this little misadventure. They’re now an international pariah state, and in the very near future, they’re going to become a broke-ass international pariah state.

Kremlin politics are infamously opaque, so I don’t know if this failure will weaken Putin sufficiently to make him vulnerable to a palace coup. Its obvious he massively miscalculated in launching this war, with devastating effects on Russia’s standing in the world, but is there anyone in Russia with the guts and capability to call him on it?

Dr Lizardo  Feb 27, 2022 • 6:58:21am

Pretty decent analysis:

Russia’s announcement that its nuclear deterrent has been put on “special alert” is a sign of both President Putin’s anger at the West’s anti-Russian sanctions and his enduring paranoia that his country is under threat from Nato.

His move has certainly got the West’s attention. This sort of escalation is exactly what Nato military planners feared and it’s why the alliance has repeatedly announced it will not be sending troops to help Ukraine repel its Russian invaders.

But Russia’s offensive is not going entirely to plan. On day four, not a single Ukrainian city is in Russian hands and the Russians appear to be taking heavy casualties.

This will be causing some frustration and impatience in Moscow. And it’s hard to see the proposed peace talks on the Belarus border reaching a deal that works for both Moscow and Kyiv.

Putin wants Ukraine fully back into its sphere, the Zelensky government wants it to stay independent. Short of partition, that doesn’t leave much room for compromise.

So, coupled with today’s nuclear-tipped warning to the West to back off, we are likely to see an intensification of Russia’s offensive on Ukraine in coming days, with even less regard for civilian casualties than has been shown so far.

Also Putin: Purging officials left and right who do not tell him what he wants to hear

Competent generals: Were cashiered long ago

Incompetent, lickspittle generals: Tells Putin what they think he wants to hear

Russian forces: Get stomped in a war they don’t even want to be in and have no interest in fighting

Putin: “Surprised Pikachu face”

Also Putin: Threatens everyone with nukes if Ukraine doesn’t let him win

We will, however, join the EU, and there will be firm commitments in place that if we are again attacked by Russia or any Russian satellite, other members of the EU will come to Ukraine’s aid, including air power and boots on the ground. And the only concessions asked of Russia are the return of Crimea and the two separatist regions to Ukrainian control.

Pretty decent analysis:

bbc.com

That last paragraph is the most important one. Vlad knows that deliberately targeting civilians is going to leave the West with no choice but to get involved in order to prevent genocide, but so long as civilian resistance remains high then Vlad has no hope to take any major cities and hold them long enough to force capitulation by the Ukrainian government. So threatening nuclear war unless he can conquer the country is basically the only card he has left to play.

Ukraine is bothering because its the right thing to do, even knowing that Russia is probably engaged in a propaganda stunt and isn’t serious about peace. If they show that Russia is making ridiculous demands, that strengthens Ukraine’s position internationally. Plus, this war is being fought entirely in Ukraine, and if there is even a slight chance of ending it on honorable terms to stop the death and destruction its worth it to try.

The only one who finally spoke up was (I believe) Krebs, who told Hitler that Steiner was unable to rustle up enough forces to make even a remotely credible breakthrough/counterattack.

Of course, the rest has become the stuff of meme legend. I even refer to things like that horrifying moment of truth as a “Steiner moment”.

Some thoughts:

I think tfg conned Putin into this mess in Ukraine. He played the con and convinced Putin …
Putin has made a big mistake.

I think anyone who assumes that Putin is sane and has a plan that is based in objective reality is making a mistake.

If you have the time read Putin’s blog post on “On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians”. The TL:DR of it is that he doesn’t believe Ukraine is a real country, and that it currently exists is due to enemy action.

He’s been saying that for quite a while, and everyone blew it off as ‘posturing’ to try to gain political advantage.

Instead it turns out that he actually believes that, and one of the reason the invasion has been going so poorly for Russia is based on the assumption that the Ukrainians would welcome the Russian army as liberators.

It is ‘not good’ that someone with dictatorial control over nuclear weapons is apparently completely froot loops.

292
GlutenFreeJesus  Feb 27, 2022 • 7:22:27am

It sems the new MAGAt/Putin-humper excuse for all of this is to blame President Clinton for Ukraine destroying their nuclear arsenal in 1994. These fools hope nobody remembers back then Ukraine was basically a puppet state.

This.
My own feeling that the course of the war has developed the way it has mainly because the Russians want to conquer Ukraine 🇺🇦, not destroy it. One hopes that goal stays in place, because, inefficient as the Russian military may be, if the operational orders change from “occupy and hold territory” to “blow all this shit up and bolt”, Ukraine is going to become an unprecedented* disaster even worse than it is.

*”unprecedented” since WWII, anyway: Kyiv might easily be turned into 1945 Berlin.

Wonder how plausible it is that, like Hitler, Putin’s military has been lying to him all this time about their capabilities and readiness.

The army has been lying about how many solidiers they have, so their commanders can pocket their pay, and so they’ve been forcing/tricking conscripts into signing mercernary contracts, so that it’s ‘legal’ for the conscripts to be sent to the frontline.

There’s a thread here about that -

obivously mostly speculation.

But here is the result, a Russian unit that looks to my civilian eyes like it has no clue what it is doing and then the next day several of the vehicles have been disabled.

It’s a clusterfuck.

Unfortunately I don’t think the Russians are going to realise this was a bad idea and withdraw, instead they’ll switch to more methodical wide area devastation tactics, which is going to lead to a lot of civilian deaths.

this is another question I have. Those Ukrainian jets are flying from somewhere. What airfields do the Ukrainians still have available to them, and how does one ensure they stay operational?

Ukraine is a big country; Russia probably doesn’t have the air power to hit every airfield, and I’m sure they are defended by AA systems.

That’s the main issue with strong-man authoritarian states. The strong-man takes steps to remove/kill anyone with capability that appears to threaten his position. This leads to problems when the strong-man starts having issues (or dies). No clear successor in place or competent replacement in any position to step up. So things spiral out of control as the yes-men refuse to stick their necks out or a huge internal knife-fight as the minions attempt to grab more for their little fiefs.

Probably: most of Western Ukraine (where Lviv is) seems still to be mostly blank in those maps of attacks and troop movements, etc.: I’m guessing 1) they have relocated a good deal of air assets to those “rear areas” and 2) the Russians have likely concentrated their attacks on air assets closer at hand (in the Eastern sectors and around Kyiv). And not, by the look of it, doing all that great a job.

Not something I’d want to do personally but moving an anti-tank mine by hand is safer than you’d think unless it has been equipped with an anti-tamper switch or some similar booby-trap. Trigger weight for those is fairly high and usually not set off by a person stepping on them since they are intended to destroy vehicles.

I think this is key. Putin has relied on threats and deception and using the gray areas and shadows. It was a huge mistake to go toe to toe like this, because all of that is stripped away. It’s simplistic to think that the first casualty of war is truth.

Long lines are forming up in front of Russian banks. People are demanding dollars.

The Russians are worried about Monday’s fall of the ruble. Queues in front of ATMs are forming across the country on Sunday, Bloomberg reported. People want to withdraw money in foreign currency because they suspect that new sanctions against the Kremlin for invading Ukraine will lead to the collapse of their national currency.

“I stood in line for an hour, but foreign currency is gone everywhere, only rubles remain. I arrived late because I didn’t believe it was possible. I’m shocked, “Bloomberg quoted Vladimir, a 28-year-old programmer waiting in a long line at an ATM in a Moscow shopping mall.

Interest in foreign currency in Russia erupted after the market closed on Friday, despite the fact that some banks sold the dollar up to a third higher than the current exchange rate, well below the level of 100 rubles per dollar. The trading rate officially ended at around 83 rubles per dollar on Friday.

I think enough people are tired of bullshit propaganda that there isn’t anything they can message that won’t be immediately counter-messaged, and to a greater degree. Putin has state run media, but people still have Twitter on their phones.

Ukraine needs to have one more good night, then the markets open and Putin is screwed.

Yes, I think releasing intel ahead was a good move. Russia has been winning for so long and it’s nice to see them losing on this front. Part of the problem is their apparatus has been chugging along maxed out for so long, it seems they didn’t have an extra gear to escalate to once war happened. As if the winning for so long lulled them into assuming they’d still dominate the space.

re: #406 No Malarkey!

Imagine the pressure its going to put Putin under on the home front when the Russian stock market and the Ruble collapse tomorrow morning.

I think that’s the real trick here. The pressure is good. Making a mad dog desperate is a bad idea. But where is that right spot in between? The stakes are literally as high as it gets.

I think enough people are tired of bullshit propaganda that there isn’t anything they can message that won’t be immediately counter-messaged, and to a greater degree. Putin has state run media, but people still have Twitter on their phones.

Ukraine needs to have one more good night, then the markets open and Putin is screwed.

i’m a bit worried about the 500 tanks that are apparently on the way, but I’m guessing like the Iroquois in the French Indian wars, there will be plenty of opportunity along the trail to attrit that significantly down. Hell, hold them up somewhere for a couple of extra hours and they probably run out of gas.

Indeed. I’m a bit disappointed that the city did not appropriate the trucks and sell them. But this gives me a nice dose of schadenfreude.

I’m only an armchair general colonel grunt at best, but even I know that in motorized warfare (i.e., virtually the only kind “advanced” modern armies do) you have to keep your logistical/supply “tail” up-and-running right along with your combat elements. It really doesn’t reflect well on Russian military operations when “Russian column halted in Ukraine by running out of gas” is one of the most-common photo captions from the conflict….

this is another question I have. Those Ukrainian jets are flying from somewhere. What airfields do the Ukrainians still have available to them, and how does one ensure they stay operational?

Suitable stretches of road. Most air forces in Europe, including the USAFE, have regular plans for this in an emergency. Suitable lengths of road are surveyed and strengthened where necessary. Nearbe buildings are selected to serve as logistic points. Designated logistic units activate the ad hoc bases when necessary.

Well the world isn’t totally on fire, yet at least. So we have that going for us….

Honestly, all the fucking so called “American Patriots” who refuse to wear a mask, get vaccinated or at all give a shit about any of their fellow Americans are such a stark contrast to the people of Ukraine and their Go Fuck Yourself I Will Die Fucking Up Your Shit version of actual patriotism it’s pretty amazing. And fucking embarrassing. If Russia could show up here and do what they are trying with Ukraine these whiny assholes would be on Team Vlad all the way. Or they would hide and let other people fight for this country. I think the contrast needs to be pointed out as often as possible. There are 80 yr old grandmothers willing to shoot anyone who fucks with their community, they aren’t running and hiding or sitting around crying about how unfair it is.

I hope Putin is so humiliated and emasculated that he simply cannot hold power any longer because no one in key positions will do his bidding. I know that’s wishful thinking, but all these evil fucks have fragile egos, from Putin on down the line to some dipshit militia idiot from the Midwest US who wants to kill liberals. It’s their weak spot, but that level of humiliation carries the risk of serious lashing out before they are stopped or kill themselves. My big fear with Ukraine is destruction of nuclear power facilities and waste storage sites. That is something your country and continent can’t just bounce back from.
