Tori Amos: a peerless songwriter who needs no introduction.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Ann Powers | February 2, 2022
Tori Amos’ Tiny Desk (home) concert debut takes place in what looks like close quarters. The singer-songwriter whose music has served as a beacon for so many listeners during her thirty-year career sits at her beloved Bosendorfer piano with a star-embellished Wurlitzer at her back. On a nearby shelf is a stack of books; one is Suzanne Simard’s classic of forest ecology, Finding the Mother Tree. As Amos begins “Baker Baker,” a fan favorite from her 1994 album Under the Pink, her bell-like voice fills the room. It’s easy to imagine she’s in a lighthouse on the cliffs of Cornwall instead of the state-of-the-art home studio where her husband, engineer Mark Hawley, ensures that the mix will be perfect. This three-song performance shows Amos both alone and reaching out, casting sonic beams to guide us in the dark.

The other two songs Amos offers are from her characteristically fearless, self-interrogating, soul-integrating 2021 album Ocean to Ocean. Her renditions of the title track and “29 Years” are magnetic, but what really makes this set a treat is the commentary she shares before each song. Talking about the growing she’s done during lockdown – learning about the climate crisis, confronting her own long-buried trauma – Amos reveals why she remains so beloved. She still knows how to make the most private and even inchoate feelings accessible. Hers is a lighthouse that welcomes the traveler in for a heart-to-heart exchange.

SET LIST
“Baker Baker”
“Ocean to Ocean”
“29 Years”

He’s a dick, but he sees the writing on the wall. Russia will be a pariah state until Putin and all his cronies are gone. Aside from still being an important member of NATO, Turkey stands to gain way more by standing with Europe on this and telling Putin to f*ck off.

Isn’t it weird the vehicles the Russians seen to be using?

The various wrecked convoys we’re seeing in Kharkiv and other places seem to be made up of lightly armoured, and sometimes unarmoured, trucks.

Where are the APCs and IFVs?

Where are the tanks?

Ukraine has called on the International Red Cross to repatriate dead soldiers back to Russia. That could be were some of them went. But as posted a few seconds ago, they also have mobile crematoriums to hide the real number of dead.

Having seen the dismal performance of the Russian military in recent days, I’d be willing to wager a small sum that Turkey reckons they really don’t have much to worry about.

In a conventional fight, the Turks would probably send the Russians back to the gates of Moscow in little time. It’d be a rout.

I’m sure that’s going to go over well with the soldiers, learning that in addition to being sent into combat with fuck-all for logistics and very angry locals everywhere they turn, they’re also about to learn that they’re not getting paid for any of this. And whatever they did have back home is going to be rendered worthless the moment the markets open up in less than 12 hours.

The wrecked convoys are logistics vehicles carrying supplies. The APCs and IFVs might be along in small numbers as escorts, but most of those are at the front line. And the APCs such as BTR-80s, etc. are proof roughly to small arms fire and grenade fragments and not much else.

Erdogan is an asshole populist dictator, but Turkey is an active NATO member and he’s been playing both sides for years. If you remember a few years ago, Russian fighters crossed into Turkey from Syria and Turkey shot them down. Putin announced that they had crashed, will need to investigate, let this get stuffed under the carpet, but nope, Erdogan said publicly they shot the Russians down. Six months of various bullshit sanctions on imports and travel (a LOT of Russians go to Turkey for vacation), and then things were kinda back to normal. He bought a bunch of Russian anti-aircraft systems, pissing off other NATO members, but then publicly comes out in defense of Crimean Tatars and the need to return Crimea to Ukraine.

When we’re living in a world where the whole world is ready to take on any challenge to freedom, we won’t have any more wars. I would love to live in that world, but we are not ready to take on Russia, China, and other regional players.

58
Targetpractice  Feb 27, 2022 • 11:13:39am

And it’s not just soldier pay, it’s pretty much everything about the war. Vlad’s fantasies aside, the USSR no longer exists and as such the factories the war depends upon are privately-owned enterprises rather than state-owned workhouses where the threat of gulag/death kept the peasants in line. When the economic meltdown begins in earnest tomorrow, a lot of contracts are going to start to come “under review.” If the state can’t afford to pay, then the factories can’t produce war supplies and the contractors can’t provide services to the military. IOW, it’s going to be much harder to get a gallon of diesel, a magazine of shells, or a simple MRE to the troops if there’s no money in the coffers to make any of them.

because as others have noted, Russia is a paper tiger. They don’t have an elite Panzer Korps. Their tanks are built in factories where corrupt oligarchs are likely stripping stuff out of the insides, selling them to go into consumer electronics, and then using the proceeds to buy housing in London. The elite troops that Russia DOES have are likely surrounding Moscow, in order to prevent some outlying Caesar from deciding this would be a good opportunity to play capture the flag.

“Due to the deteriorating situation, Sberbank CZ was forced to close its branches for security reasons and also to temporarily suspend all card transactions. We apologize for these complications and thank you for your understanding, “says Sberbank CZ.

Deposits of bank clients, including Sberbank, are legally insured up to 100,000 euros (approximately 2.5 million crowns) for one depositor at one bank or credit union. The Czech National Bank said that it monitors the situation around Sberbank and resolves it from a supervisory position.

He also sold Ukraine the drones that are causing some havoc.

Can anyone explain why a huge exchange spread between buying and selling exists?
I g00gled and find it is likely due to one of two things, emerging market or lack of liquidity.

I understand why it could cost 204 rubles to get a Euro, but don’t understand why a ruble seller would only give 74 rubles for a Euro.

I think that’s how “markets are made”. Like the points spread in sports betting. You have to attract both positions.

on a somewhat serious note, at least in the old days, map-reading was not taught to Russian soldiers. Officers could read maps. Everybody else just went where they got told. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve got loads of Russians wandering around who have no idea where they are or where they’re going because their officers are all permanently decommissioned. Honestly, does anyone think that the Russian army has its sergeants sit the platoons down to give them a mission summary, with rendevous points in case the platoon gets separated, etc.?

My grandmother told me stories about living in a village occupied by the Nazis in WW2. The Gestapo and SS were bastards, but the average soldiers were nice. She had a toddler at the time, my oldest uncle, and the soldiers would bring him sweets and say that they had kids back home that they missed.

I think of it like this… “You wanna buy a Euro? That’s gonna cost you 204 rubles.”
Exchange has now lost a Euro and gained 204 rubles.

Combined with… “You want to buy a ruble? I’ll give you 74 for a Euro.”
In total, exchange has now broke even on Euros and gained 130 rubles.

The spread is adjusted to try to even out both types of transactions, thus guaranteeing a profit for the exchange.

I think that’s how “markets are made”. Like the points spread in sports betting. You have to attract both positions.

the market maker has to account for the fact that the ruble isn’t stable at the moment. He’s taking a chance in giving you 74 rubles for the dollar that he/she won’t wake up tomorrow to discover that nobody else is now willing to take less than 200 rubles for that same dollar. So he hedges the instability by putting a really wide space between the put and the ask. Stocks work exactly the same way. The only reason you don’t notice it as much is because if you sell 100 shares of exxon, there are a billion shares in the float, and tens of millions of them can trade on any day, so your broker can generally execute your trade for within a penny or two of where you expect the trade to come in at.

From balloon-juice.com:

And I agree with this:

Right now the US, the EU, our NATO partners, and our non-EU and non-NATO partners need to continue doing what they’re doing. Increasing the economic pain. Resupplying the Ukrainians. Updating the plans, sequels, and contingency plans for when and under what conditions NATO may have to actually enter the war*. What does not and should not be done is providing Putin with any enticements or rewards for his actions today. Doing that will only reinforce his belief, and teach everyone else, that as long as one has a nuclear arsenal of sufficient size at one’s disposal that one can hold the world hostage to get what one wants. That cannot be allowed to happen.

They’re getting MiG-29s from Poland, Bulgaria, and Slovakia I think. Ukraine flies them already, otherwise they’d be impossible to use.

They’re trained on the MIGs and Sukkoys though, and they don’t exactly have the luxury to retrain right now.

When the reckoning comes for Putin and his mob, I really, really hope that the troll farms, bot nets, and influence agents are included. They have been a major factor in Putin’s expansion of power in recent years and a massive problem in the rest of the world. Their full exposure would go a long way toward repairing relations with the West, and an excellent start on the rebuilding of Russian society.

Yevgeny Prigozhin. “Putin’s Chef” should be on that list.

Not sure if this is entirely truthful (first casualty of war & all that)

BUT

This video purports to show an ornery Ukrainian farmer hitching up a Russian tank and towing it away with his tractor, while the Russian crew was passed-out drunk on vodka.

(Rough Translation)
First one is laughing, ‘That’s some crazy shit, [they] stole the [military] machinery’

Second one: ‘Our [people] are dragging BTR into their yard, cause the metal will be pricy. Useful thing to go logging to the forest”

Regardless of how the war in Ukraine plays out, this was a huge mistake by Putin. He already lost the bigger war, even if he manages to inflict needles pain on Ukraine. He’ll have a much stronger and more united EU to contend with, his economy will be in shambles, and Russian elite will be persona non grata in most places. His bootlickers abroad will pretend that they never liked him after all.

Probably a bigger miscalculation than Saddam invading Kuwait.

Probably doesn’t matter much for transport airplanes in times of peace, but you don’t want to be in a warzone without having your muscle memory in tune with the jet. Different controls and flight characteristics. Though this is just speculation on my part, maybe someone with more relevant expertise will chime in.

i’m being rather facetious. of course a pilot would need time to acclimatize to a new fighter. I guess my observation was more about how much wastage there is in our armed services. the f 15 is still a perfectly good jet—probably better than most jets in most armies even today, and yet billions of dollars worth of them are sitting in california desert plane cemeteries because we’re always on to the new shiney thing.

By a large wall?

The wall was down by then. Past the gate there was a flea market atmosphere of people selling East German memorabilia laid out on card tables. Going into the former East Berlin in some places had the feeling of leaving a color movie and going into black and white.

I was there in ‘93. My middle brother was living on the west side, and was a member of a commune that started on the east side, past the last train station.

Maybe a little harsh for wanting to help people.

Facebook has fortunately immunized me from people who do not grasp the difference between the imperative and the subjunctive. Tennant’s around the world in 80 days has been pretty good, by the way, through 2 episodes. Oh, to save John from further comment, YES, I REALIZE THAT THE SERIES IS FANTASY AND THAT PEOPLE IN THE 1870’s DIDN’T GENERALLY MAKE IT AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS.

There. I hope that was clear enough. :-)

Ha, that’s why I went, too. My brother married a West German woman (at the time) and was living in Hamburg (he still does, but with wife #2). He got busy with a home project and I had to arrange a trip to stay out of the way, so I spent a couple of nights in Berlin. Took a side trip on a different day to Lubeck. It was a good experience.

I don’t think she always deserves a hefty ratio. As long as she continues to be supportive of Biden nominees, she is a million percent better than any GOP alternative. Question to those from Arizona: Is Wendy Rogers a typical Republican from your state or is she an outlier? It was troubling that your Governor supports her.

Yeah, well, if I recall correctly, Jules Verne had seen that famous “80 day” schedule published somewhere (it was, I believe, a theoretical schedule, not an actual itinerary), and had the inspiration to write his exotic travelogue based on what were then amazing improvements in transportation efficiency.
Nellie Bly did it in 72 days a few years later.

because as others have noted, Russia is a paper tiger.

Never is a long time. It would not be surprising to see the oligarchs returning to the catbird seat after a Putin “retirement” and withdrawal of forces from Ukraine. It’s not as though any of them likely supported this invasion; they just want to restore the status quo antebellum and can probably find amongst themselves a dictator with no global aspirations.

Here where talking about Ukrainians flying for the Ukraine.

What I mean is jets that are given to Ukraine could in part have pilots from other nations that are fully trained in the aircraft given.

And they can’t read the instruments. The Dash-Ones are in English. The weights aren’t metric, the speeds aren’t metric.
