I saw an obnoxious tweet promoting an Evangelical preacher named Francis Chan telling his hearers at a mass gathering called “The Send” in Kansas City a couple of weeks ago that since God created everything, he owns all of us. Therefore God owns our bodies, and since abortion is wrong in God’s eyes, we can’t get abortions. Or something. That tweet, however, reminded me about how I wanted to write something about consent in Evangelicalism. So I spent a profitable 90 minutes sketching out what I wanted to say and am now letting it marinate.

One of the remarks I made in the essay was about Paul Pressler, a former Texas appellate court judge and one of the architects of the “conservative resurgence” within the SBC. Pressler’s currently being sued by a man who said Pressler sexually abused him. The man recently won his appeal at the Texas Supreme Court and his case will go forward, despite the statute of limitations. Anyway, I was searching the news about Pressler, because in the SBC’s poor excuse for a “database” of sex offenders (it’s actually a printout of a crappy Excel spreadsheet), Pressler is listed in there, but his name is blacked out. And I came across this.

So, basically, we have Paul Pressler to thank for the Houston Chronicle delving into the sex abuse coverup of the SBC. Pressler is something like 88 years old and I hope it gnaws his guts that he was the cause of all of this. Yes, I am mean.

I just want to scream. One of the things that MOST Christians don’t even realize or pay attention to is that Galilee (where Jesus lived) was a Roman client state under the rule of Herod Antipas and Judaea was a Roman province governed by a series of procurators, most notably, Pontius Pilate. In other words, Roman Palestine was occupied by a hostile power and its local stooges like Herod Antipas. And the Roman authorities had zero problem making examples of potential threats to its authority. The Christian book of Acts (5:36-37) notes that Judas the Galilean and Theudas, revolted against the established order (at separate times) and were quickly dealt with.

*headdesk* It doesn’t even seem to have occurred to them that Jesus was executed by the Romans as a threat to Roman governance. From what little we know about Pilate, he wouldn’t have hesitated if he thought there might be an attempt at a rebellion. But so many Christians today are allying themselves with power in the hopes that they can grab onto power and then force everyone else to bow down. This gun business is part of it. And to just state my opinion about it: I don’t think Jesus has anything to do with these gun promoters.

I mean, it’s pretty obvious, even from a cursory reading of the Gospels.

The Romans used crucifixion to deal with rebels, and had been doing so for quite some time before they turned up in Judea. That method of execution is so blatantly Roman that it’s inescapable. Furthermore, the sign on top of the cross (as the story goes) read, “Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum” - Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews and was written in Hebrew, Latin and Koine Greek.

C’mon. I mean, the Pharisees sure as hell didn’t put that up there. It’s obvious, and again from even a cursory reading, that this was how the Romans sent a crystal-clear message to any would-be rebels against their rule.

I was reading—through Google Translate—a thread by a Russian intellectual on what has become of the Russian people. In the midst of it he told an old Russian joke: Satan appears before a very poor man with lots and lots of children and says “I will make you rich, but all of your children will die!” and the poor man responds “what’s the catch?”

He makes several points, but one is that Putin’s totalitarian state has made everyone dependent on vertical relations. Horizontal relations such as between friends and even family are weakened by fear, mistrust, and survival instinct.

Thanks for sharing. I’ll eagerly watch all later. In the intro I noticed that my high school band’s drummer has worked for later versions of Bay City Rollers (they just hired him for a couple of shows in a pinch—and tried to run off without paying him) and Bad Finger (he played for them for a couple of years when there were no original members, just Joey Mulland); now that I think about it, he drummed for the Gin Blossoms for a few years, too. The music of these bands is in my soul.

I don’t disagree, and the texts make it clear…but when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, the Romans were made to be patsies of “The Jews” and it was really “The Jews” who killed Jesus. Which is simply untrue for so many reasons and I find it disgusting I have to even mention that it’s untrue. Maybe I’m being sarcastic, maybe I’m not, but it sure as hell seems to me that so many American Christians today would take the part of the Roman authorities against Jesus, but hey, I know I’m weird.

I’ve found myself pondering from time to time if Jesus’ trial before the Sanhedrin took place, or if that was simply a later addition to the narrative.

This is just me speculating: Jesus goes and makes a scene at the Temple, and that - naturally - attracts the attention of the Romans. Jesus goes on the lam but is found not long after, arrested, and interrogated…by the Romans. Let’s say, for the sake of speculation, that he says he’s not only the Mosiach but that he’s also the true King of the Judeans. The Romans take him to the Governor, Pontius Pilate, who has a good chuckle about it all and promptly orders this would-be king (and let’s not forget, rabble-rouser and troublemaker) executed as a rebel threatening Roman rule.

Easy peasy. The rest of the narrative is fictionalized. Sort of an anticipation of the genre of crime novels like James Elroy’s “The Black Dahlia”, which is a fictionalized version based on an actual crime.

Jesse wanted to sleep next to me, for some reason, last night, which was not particularly cold. But when I’d crawled back into bed after a bad night, she leapt up, walked over me, put a front leg on a nerve cluster in my arm that she knows about and uses to advantage, all to get me to make more room so that she could spoon next to my belly. This cat is really fond of me, and the fact I laugh about it while she’s busy keeping me awake pestering me means I’m fond of her as well.

U.S. and Canadian regulators are investigating a hepatitis outbreak that may be linked to fresh organic strawberries.

In a joint weekend statement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Public Health Agency of Canada said illnesses in Minnesota, California and Canada occurred after people consumed FreshKampo and H-E-B brand strawberries.

The agencies said the strawberries were purchased between March 5 and April 25. They were sold at various U.S. retailers, including Aldi, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart and Trader Joe’s. In Canada, the affected strawberries were sold between March 5-9 at Co-op stores in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The potentially affected strawberries are past their shelf life, but health officials say consumers who purchased them and froze them to eat later should throw them away.

There have been 17 illnesses and 12 hospitalizations reported in the U.S., the FDA said. Ten cases and four hospitalizations have been reported in Canada.

Mexico-based FreshKampo, which grew the strawberries, said in a statement Sunday that it is working with regulators to determine how the problem occurred. FreshKampo said the label on the containers of potentially affected strawberries would have said “Product of Mexico” or “Distributed by Meridien Foods.”

OK, one last post before I call it a day. As we know, there’s a new Netflix series coming from the creators of Dark - this new one is called 1899. The synopsis is:

A group of European migrants leave London on a steamship to start new lives in New York City. But when they encounter another migrant ship adrift on the open sea, their journey begins to turn into a nightmare.

There’s a new teaser trailer, and I took a screenshot from that trailer, which I’ll put in a spoiler tag.

Here’s the teaser:

Youtube Video

Here’s the screenshot:

Speculation, in spoiler tag.

That screenshot looks, to me, very much like a White Star Olympic-class ocean liner. And that’s definitely an anachronism, as there were no ships like that traveling the oceans of the world in 1899. Hell, not even close. I think this series involves some kind of temporal anomaly.

I was very annoyed to see that the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife actually seems to endorse the use of the AR-15 and similar rifles for hunting feral hogs.
Common Firearms

Recently firearm manufacturers have expanded their production of semi-automatic rifles to include AR styles that are derived from models used by the military. They appear in a wide range of calibers which has increased their popularity among many hunters who find them particularly useful for hunting feral hogs.

This is crazy, and heinously cruel. It could also be very dangerous to the AR yahoos themselves, though I don’t count that as much of a drawback. Hogs have been known to take a whole magazine from an AR-15 and keep going at least briefly. The 5.56/.223 caliber is commonly regarded as inadequate for deer. It will kill a deer to be sure but you have to have perfect shot placement and less than 150 yards range. Feral hogs, though, are typically twice as large (sometimes much larger) and many times as tough.
This looks like political pandering. Disallowing the sacred AR would set off a firestorm of protest, and probably death threats, and TPWD probably figures it just isn’t worth it.

I am firmly of the opinion that the minimum hunting cartridge is center fire of 6.5mm or larger for big game (deer, hog, etc) and have gotten into arguments with people pushing the “Modern Sporting Rifle” garbage about the AR-15.

Hell, with a 5-round magazine & a red dot, my AK is a better hunting rifle because that 30-caliber round will stop a white tail much better than the .223 varmint round.

I am NOT an art history person, but I know that artists have always been pushing the boundaries, and in particular, for 50 plus years before World War I. The Salon des Refusés in 1862 (held as a counter to the many paintings rejected by the official Salon) hung Le déjeuner sur l’herbe by Manet. While problematic by today’s standards (why is she nude while the men are clothed?) it was a huge poke at the establishment, which only wanted landscapes, classic nudes and monumental art (war scenes). Three years later, Manet got into the main Salon with Olympia, which, while a nude, was hardly classic, not when the nude was very clearly a prostitute and you, the viewer, were in the position of the john. Le déjeuner and Olympia are currently owned by the French government and are displayed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

This had a lot more to do with the aftermath of the Jewish wars against the Romans, which did the empire a lot of damage. After that, Christians worked very hard to separate themselves from Judaism, to avoid the kind of retaliation that Jews suffered. (In the interest of truth, I add that it seems entirely possible to me that Jewish authorities turned a known rabble rouser over to the (Roman) authorities, in the interest of keeping the peace in an extremely turbulent time.)

There is a passage in The Source (Michener) in which the main character, a (lapsed) Catholic, comes into the living quarters of a Jewish colleague and finds a poster on the wall that says, “We did too crucify Him.” Whatever did or did not happen 2000 years ago, the perpetrators are long dead, and it’s not a valid reason for (mis)treating anyone today.
