My new monitor, coming this week. 32 inches of 4K goodness for less than $700, and this is a lot more than a computer display.

My 30” Apple Cinema Display was $1800 in 2008.

That is sick.

Fortunately for me, I was never unaware of my limitations and so I could pretend that I didn’t care that I’d never reach any heights with my guitar.

YouTube science educator Anton Petrov posted a video today about two papers that point out possible flaws in the M87 black hole research by the Event Horizon Telescope team. It is very much worth the watch. The tl;dr is:

1) A Japanese paper said the field of view for the Event Horizon Telescope’s research was improperly constrained by what the EHT scientists knew about the mass of the M87 black hole. They used the same data but made the field of view larger and came up with different results. In fact, the Japanese team thinks the data may actually show a relativistic jet emerging from the black hole. Alternatively, Anton speculates that making the field of view larger could introduce a lot of unnecessary noise.

That could be scientific sour grapes, but…

2) The next paper attempted to reproduce the results of the M87 image based on the data and computer processing. Turns out they could not get the raw data but had to used processed data. It looks like, from one of the screenshots, that they were using Python for some of the processing, but that some scripts were missing. That said, there was enough information for this team to generally reproduce the images after they made some assumptions about the data and scripting.

Which led Anton to say:

3) This should have been done earlier. We were so wowed by what the EHT team did, but it took three years for someone to follow up on how it was done.

And finally, he concluded with a plea:

4) Make your data available for testing and review. The guy reads A LOT of papers. In fact, I’m sure he gets papers sent to him all the time. If he reads a paper that makes a lot of claims that sound too good to be true, he contacts the authors. And he said that sometimes the scientists will tell him they don’t know exactly what they did to get their results. Which he doesn’t like. It gave me a bit of insight into the work that he puts into making his videos.

As you can see from above, it gave me a lot to think about. Here’s the link if you want to watch.

Thank you. The age is, as I said, sort of without significance. I do feel old, though.
I was commenting to a friend a couple days ago that one of the surprises of getting older is the things that go wrong that you weren’t expecting at all. I was concerned about osteoporosis because my mother had it. I had my bones scanned a few years ago and they’re great. No hint of osteoporosis. Yay! So what am I dealing with instead? Degenerative disc disease and a strong tendency toward osteoarthritis. Gah. Never saw it coming. I’m grateful that it is not severe, and I don’t know that I could have done anything to head it off, but it was totally off my radar.

This was my reply:

I knew someone would go there. Did you know that the Nazis did not ban non-Jewish Germans from having guns. But, you know what they gave the Germans with guns? Jews as targets. If you’re going to reference a movie about the Holocaust, you had better get your facts straight. The German people turned on the Jews, not just the government. The German people took the houses, the stores, and the property of the Jews. The German people, those how bought into the fascist leader’s statements that it was the fault of the non-Christians, the gays, the cripples, and foreigners that Germany was the way it was, they were more than willing to kill men, women, and children, and turned a blind eye to the implementation of the Final Solution. So, when you start using comparisons to Nazi Germany, make sure you’re not the ones demonizing gays and Jews, and you’re not the one blindly quoting slogans like America First.

Yep, the laws regularly cited had been passed by the Wiemar gov’t in response to anti-government violence, the Nazis loosened them shortly after taking power, and the only people barred going forward were those the Nazis labeled as “untermensch.” Another useful point to bring up would be the Warsaw Uprising, where the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto spent months arming everybody in anticipation of liberating themselves, only to get stomped flat by what were essentially second-line Wehrmacht troops. Which is what I point out to gun nuts. “You are not going to be able to outgun a helicopter gunship. It will cut you to pieces in seconds.” That’s harsh but that’s also reality. These people really think they will be able to stand up against “the government”. Hint: Most government militaries are not as ineptly run as the Russian military, and no you’re not going to be hitching up a tank to your Ford F-250 and haul it home as a prize in the Second American Civil War.

These goobers always assume that when they and their fellow “patriots” begin fighting against “tyranny,” one of two scenarios will play out: The Armed Forces will lay down their arms and refuse to follow “unlawful orders” to fire on insurrectionists or that those soldiers will instead join the “patriots” and turn their weapons on any superiors who continue to support the lawful government. The scenario where they find themselves reenacting Waco never occurs to them, because they’re convinced that every red-blooded American soldier is either on their side or is at least sympathetic to them.

Yes, everybody was poor. All the countries were very, very poor. Everybody everywhere was hungry, and cold, and stressed, and looking for solutions.

Europe reacted by going full genocidal fascist, because that’s what their leaders of the time were pushing. Asia went full genocidal communist, because that’s what their leaders of the time were pushing.

We remained a capitalist democracy, because FDR’s New Deal gave everybody a stake in keeping it that way.

61
Targetpractice  May 29, 2022 • 9:25:58pm

Why was Germany so poor? They tried to print away millions of marks in war debts from WWI and ended up devaluing their currency so badly that they had to actually switch not once but twice to a new currency system in less than five years. Yeah, Germany did it before Zimbabwe made it look cool.

As I’ve said before, European Jews with weapons just might have been able to drive off the first wave of collaborationist police who arrived to round them up. With luck, they might even have been able to hold off the half-assed militia who came after that. They would not have stopped the panzer grenadiers who came next.

63
sagehen  May 29, 2022 • 9:40:05pm

The people of the Warsaw ghetto, with the guns they’d been able to smuggle in and the IED’s and “grenades” they’d had enough chemists and electricians and engineers to figure out how to formulate… did slow down the liquidation of the ghetto by several weeks. Which gave them time to smuggle out a few hundred people.

But tanks are tanks, and a trained army is a trained army. The several weeks was its own sort of victory.

Fascists know this: If there is a disaffected and armed group, it would be good to attract them and court them to your cause. $50 and an armband is cheap, and you get a deniable, loyal, freikorps. Trump was just, just short of calling on them on 1/6.

Hecuba's daughter  May 29, 2022 • 9:53:10pm

A couple months ago there was a discussion about the NY Times column that expressed concern that some form of “cancel culture” was silencing “free speech”. This came to mind today because I experienced the actual issue — and not the fantasy the right keeps promoting.

In a discussion about Uvalde, I deleted a FB response to my sister’s page because my BIL believed that it would offend his elderly aunt (funny to use the word elderly since my BIL and I are in our 70’s — and all who are younger would reasonably classify us as elderly!). The real “cancel culture” that affects most people is censoring their comments to avoid language that might be hurtful to others. Sometimes it is better to avoid confrontations and hold your tongue, especially in response to those who haven’t gone on a tirade when expressing their views. But I do get triggered when someone regurgitates meaningless religious pieties to explain these repeated massacres.

Comparing US and European history is apples and oranges.

And trying to make a pro-gun argument out of it is the most delicate form of cherry-picking imaginable.

(And don’t mention the example of Great Britain, which totally banned gun ownership and has not had a school shooting since)

Comparing US history to really any other country ignores the reality that pretty much no other nation that’s not a constant war zone enshrines gun ownership as an inviolate right whose existence is treated as the only thing stopping the nation from “tyranny.”

First with our new bassist. He’s good.

I took a slab of brisket and made a dry rub (cocoa, sugar, smoked paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, salt, pepper) and wrapped it and threw it in the fridge yesterday. Then I got up at 3am to give the boys their Buddy Biscuits and put it in the smoker at 225. Just added chips to the external smoker about 20 minutes ago and plugged in the thermometers…center temp 158. Will let the smoke cover it for the next three hours or so then wrap it up and let it sit in there until lunch.

Just saw a report that a 20yo drowned at Lake Lanier north of Atlanta. That reminded me of hearing about “the curse” of the lake for the first time a couple of years ago. I went boating and swimming a couple of times in college with a friend whose family had a house on the lake. I had never heard it’s history.

Some say it’s cursed because the Army of Engineers had to force hundreds to relocate in order to build it in the 1950s, or that the ghost of a young woman who died in a car accident by skidding off a bridge pulls people under, or that one town that is under the water now was the site of a horrible lynching and systematic depopulation of the Black community in 1912.

Black twitter is like: “ok, Lake Lanier killed someone; it’s officially the start of summer.”

Named for Confederate Army poet Sidney Lanier, it was built and is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and water supplies. Its construction destroyed more than 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of farmland and displaced more than 250 families, 15 businesses, and relocated 20 cemeteries along with their corpses in the process.

Perhaps modeling your responses in the form of inquiries could allow you to object to someone but let them feel less confronted?

It’s a difficult line on which to balance, but if someone is throwing up meaningless piety maybe a question like: What would (insert name of whoever the prayer is supposed to help) have wanted?

My comment was not, in any way, a personal attack on them — all I did was call the NRA, the politicians they own, and the gun manufacturers evil and blame them for the deaths.

Once again.

You don’t use an AR-15 to shoot medium size game because it is not a “high powered weapon”. It shoots a small bullet at high velocity in order to cause injury, not necessarily to kill .

That’s what you want in war.

When hunting you want to kill the animal with one shot. A 5.56mm AR-15 is underpowered for that. That’s why it as such a large magazine.
