Jilted Adobe Plays Porn Card Against iPad
The technoidosphere is buzzing about the fact that Apple’s new iPad doesn’t support Flash. Adobe, being the maker of Flash, is unhappy about this; so unhappy that yesterday they played the porn card.

I can't access porn from an iPad? That does it, I'm not buying one!

The offending screenshot has since been removed from the original site. You think Flash was trying to get the pr0n industry on their side, a la VHS vs Betamax?

Video, and skip technology are bandwidth hogs. Add the porn factor and the networks are simply not up to the job. The ipod had already caused network issues for At&T.

It could very well be that if they include flash, porn on top of all the news video, web cams etc could turn web 2.0 into the digital equivalent of our infamous 404 freeway between the valley and LAX. Who needs that?
Frankly, porn is way too available. I can only speculate how much illegal access there is as in underage views. I have been told by furious parents how difficult it is to keep age appropriate limits on media. I was looking at overall web site statistics and a porn site called tube8 was in the top 5 or maybe 3.
This could be the pragmatics at work. Not some big FU aimed at Adobe.

The printing press's "killer app" was largely porn, lowbrow content, and anti-Catholic/Protestant propaganda. Historian James Burke has a wood block print showing the Pope and some German protestant agitators, who seem to get a lot of cabbage in their diet, and comically timed flatulence. I REALLY wish I could find a link for that! The thing didn't spread across Europe to print Gutenberg Bibles.
Porn is a large factor in why we have color monitors, high speed bandwidth, and video cards with more than 1/4 megabyte RAM. It is porn that keeps LGF from being a series of cuneiform marks on a set of clay tablets that Charles keeps in his cave.
Still, Steve Jobs was a bit more honest and brazen than I would have ever expected this time. I wonder if he personally signed off on this?

Flash is a processor hog and extremely buggy on Macs. It will eventually become an outdated irrelevant technology. YouTube and other sites have already moved away from using Flash for their content and others are sure to follow their lead.

Not to mention that those of out here in the Linux wilderness would prefer a non-proprietary solution to delivering animated and video content.

Flash on iPhone/iPod/iPad means people can watch videos free on sites like Hulu or buy the from many many content providers online instead of using iTunes. That means no 30% iTunes tax for Apple so Apple will never allow it.
It's not just limited to music/video as there are all sorts of Flash apps and games out there too which would also be competition to iTunes and Apple really doesn't like the competition.

I was halfway through college before there was any internet at all beyond government and university websites, even newsgroups. It boggles the mind how easy it is for kids today to get their hands on gentleman's literature. It was a character building experience going through all the cloak and dagger process, using actual cash, storing data in paper form, conspiring with others, going into full psych-ops mode to keep it hidden, the identification and trading of scarce resources. All of these are valuable life skills for adult life. How do kids today learn how to get around the rules and stay out of trouble?

Flash is being replaced by web standards H.264 encoding and HTML5, not QuickTime.

Whut??? That is incorrect. Flash is the foundation for youtube's streaming video player. Go to youtube, right click on a video.

Ding ding ding! It's a competitor, exactly.
People want to believe Microsoft is malevolent and Apple is benevolent. it's not the case, Apple is just as interested in making money and shutting out threats to their revenue as any corporation.
Meanwhile, my $300 tablet PC does more than the iPad, and does it more cheaply. Just not with the swank formfactor and the elegance.

Steve Jobs, along with Google, Microsoft, and just about everyone who isn't Adobe, hates Flash with a passion because it's both ubiquitous and 100% proprietary. They don't want to have to pay Adobe license and development fees for everything they develop, just because it needs Flash.
Apple, Google, and others seem to be pushing for open universal standards like HTML5, WebGL, and Canvas. Microsoft is trying to pull an Adobe with the proprietary Silverlight. But either way, the industry is extremely annoyed with Adobe acting like it owns the internet, and Apple not supporting it is a strategic move towards that end. Whether it's a smart strategy or not, well... we'll have to wait and see.
