Brilliant, accurate and tragic.

I saw this yesterday. I love it! It made me continue to not miss my TV. I hate the "standard format", and this guy nails it!

After a morning of voice overs and edits this is great comic relief. It is easy to fall into cliche with this kind of work.

If I was director of programing...(be afraid) the news would consist of a ticker streaming across a bunch of freshly oiled bodes... the content would still stink but the ratings, oh the ratings.

17 Summer Seale  Sat, Jan 30, 2010 1:58:57pm

This was absolutely brilliant. =) This is also why I don't watch TV news anymore and would rather read information coming in from several sources online. =)

How to completely blow any credibility you had left as former Ambassador to the UN.

There are more embarrasing forwards to more embarrasing books, but not by much, Strom Thurmond claims he was fooled into writing this one.

Heh. Under "key phrases" for that one is "nut file". I clicked out of curiosity. The other books that have "nut file" in them are about guitar repair.

He wrote the forward. Perhaps before reading the book.

34 MandyManners  Sat, Jan 30, 2010 2:16:14pm

re: #26 keloyd

When it was released, the book contained a foreword written by Strom Thurmond, for whom Corso had once served as an aide. Thurmond wrote, "He has many interesting stories to share with individuals interested in military history, espionage and the workings of our Government." The foreword did not mention anything about UFOs, since Thurmond had assumed the book was a straightforward memoir . When he learned about the book's contents, Thurmond asked for his foreword to be retracted, saying, "I know of no such 'cover-up,' and do not believe one existed."[1]

He trusted him. He was once Thurmond's aide.

39 MandyManners  Sat, Jan 30, 2010 2:20:04pm

The Day After Roswell is an American book about extraterrestial spacecraft and the Roswell UFO incident. It was written by retired United States Army Colonel Philip J. Corso, with help from William J. Birnes, and was published by Pocket Books in 1997. The book claims that an extraterrestrial spacecraft crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 and was recovered by the United States government, who then sought a cover up all evidence of extraterrestrials.

The majority of the book is an account of Colonel Corso's claims that he was assigned to a secret government program that provided some material recovered from crashed spacecraft to private industry (without saying where the items came from) to reverse engineer them for corporate use. The book contends that several aspects of modern technology such as fiber optics and computer chips were developed by using information taken from the craft.

We used to all be Winston. I had who lived in a 100 year old house. It had a very old 'indoor' bathroom. You went out the front door onto the porch, then into another door. The people who built it with a fresh memory of what outhouses smelled like could not imagine having that inside the house. Apparently this was fairly common for decades.

Interesting factoid about MW popcorn. Net weight after cooking is less than prior to cooking. I called the 800# and asked why it weighs less after cooking.

The bag absorbs some of the oils/butters... decreasing the net weight of the food.

Well, I thought it was interesting.

Well, you'd think that would be the way to do things, but you'd be surprised at how often the reverse is true.

For another example in a related field - the review of school textbooks - read Richard Feynman's essay on his experience as a reviewer.

Not recommended if you've just eaten.

That was Refreshing.

American TVJournalism is even worse.

I can no longer stand listening to the cadence of lilting TV and Radio reports from the USA.

Maybe they should move over to Iambic Pentameter.

66 AK-47%  Sun, Jan 31, 2010 9:53:17am

In Germany news reports are a lot more distanced and impersonal, more voiceover and less of the direct shots of the reporter, but the sorry people in their kitchen complaining about the problem and how it affects their life/work/dog-walking schedule are even more heavily represented.

67 DemonFish  Sun, Jan 31, 2010 11:41:33am

If you liked this then you can probably stomach The Day Today & Brass Eye. Close to the bone for some folks (the paedophile episode caused uproar when it aired here in blighty) but it's deadly funny.
