Donald Trump Says the US Shouldn’t Try to Prevent Countries From Requiring Women to Wear Burqas

Because it does away with the need for makeup
Politics • Views: 59,648

Wow, there’s so much cognitive dissonance in this Boston Globe report, at first I thought it was from one of those “parody” news sites. But no, it’s real.

ATKINSON, NH - Businessman Donald Trump told a packed room the United States should not challenge countries that require women to wear burkas as he unleashed a full-throttle criticism of America’s current foreign policy.

“Why are we fighting that?” the presidential candidate asked to cheers in the crowd, and added the United States should “let them” wear what they want.

A right wing audience is cheering Trump for saying Islamic countries should be able to require women to wear burqas? What? Imagine the right wing reaction if President Obama had said something like this.

And of course, there’s the little detail that the US is not trying to tell any Islamic country they can’t require women to wear burqas. It’s just not happening. It’s a total fantasy; this crowd is wildly cheering a complete falsehood.

And Trump being Trump, he followed this up with one of his trademark misogynistic blurts.

Trump, waving a hand across his face, also said women might prefer wearing burkas because it obviates the need for make-up.

Cheers! Applause! Yeah, maybe we should require burqas in the US too. Women will thank the government for saving them from the chore of putting on makeup!

I’m getting a headache trying to follow this “reasoning.”

But wait, there’s more! Trump explained that life hasn’t been easy for him. He had to struggle to start his business with a measly little loan of a million bucks from his dad. The poor guy.

“My whole life has been a no,” he said. “It has not been easy for me. I started off in Brooklyn. My father gave me a small loan of a million dollars.”

He’s right that we can’t and shouldn’t tell people how their cultures should behave. He’s off point with his reasoning.

This gets back to what I was saying earlier…Trump is being intentionally divisive. It’s golden for him in the primary race.

Trump should start wearing one of these so he doesn’t have to worry about his hair.

Okay.

When did we start doing that?

He is the political equivalent of a “Police Academy” movie. Critics can pan it all they want for being lame and stupid and derivative, and the counter is “That’s what it is meant to be!”

Wasn’t freeing the women of Afghanistan part of the secondary reasons for the invasion? Everyone was supposed to be grateful to be modernized or something.

He’s saying that men in other countries should be allowed to make ‘their’ women wear whatever they want to make them wear, oh, and by the way, the women might like it.

There has been an ongoing discussion in Europe about how and wear women should be “allowed” to wear the burqa in public.

Oddly enough, they rarely ask the women themselves…

Somewhere deep inside Trump’s idiocy is a decent point about our inability to get to get people to accept western values at gunpoint (cough, cough, Iraq). It’s too bad he didn’t elaborate on this point to take another shot at W/Jeb and the Iraq War catastrophe.

It’s an excellent reminder that Trump’s views are not particularly Republican in nature, at least by grown-up serious-pants standards. They align with the sections of the GOP’s platform that more directly cater to hateful nativist bullshit, but that appears to me to be almost coincidental.

These people need to be reminded that their ideology has a lot more in common with Shariah than ours does. Really wingnuts the gun pornography just makes you look like virgins who have never actually touched a woman before. There has been an ongoing discussion in Europe about how and wear women should be “allowed” to wear the burqa in public.

I know, and I can understand both sides of that debate. It is perfectly possible that a woman who has always covered her face in public would feel uncomfortable exposing it. If the US decided that everyone had to go topless, I would feel pretty uncomfortable.
On the other hand, women forced by their families to wear a burqa might welcome the requirement that they not wear it, to say nothing of the public safety aspect of people not being able to hide their identity in public.

I have no patience for the “you’re here now and have to do what we want” argument.

Yes, and it also involves whether Muslima schoolteachers in Germany should be allowed to wear a headscarf in schools…but again, throughout the debate, we have heard little or nothing from the women themselves

Not even the most nutty thing Trump’s said.

After all, Trump inherited his dad’s real estate fortune and he could have been filthy rich had he invested it in an index fund instead of using his business acumen. Of course, had he given the money to Warren Buffet in 1974 (much more of a self-made man), he could have become legitimately the richest guy on the planet with $67 billion.

Trump also tried to take credit for Ford keeping workers in Ohio, even though the deal was done before Trump even entered the race and Trump still produces his clothing lines overseas.

You know part of the reason a lot of other countries really don’t like the U.S. is because they think it has a constant need to meddle in affairs. America is NOT as exceptional as these nutjobs think and certainly has no right to try to force policy on an another nation.

I mean, I’m all for meaningful diplomatic relations, but the idea that “This is what America wants, so you better do it and SHUT THE FUCK UP!” is very damaging to the international image of this country.

Yes, because you’re not beautiful enough as you are, as a natural woman. Here, put on this mask before you go out so you don’t have to be ashamed of yourself. //

One kind of mask or the other—make-up, burqa, niqab—they’re all essentially “bags” over your head that conceal your real face.

No matter when I see it, all I see is repression. Be it head scarf or full cover, it all reads as repression. I was at the airport in Detroit waiting for hubby to pick me up and it was about 98 degrees out. A whole Muslim family was waiting for someone and the man was wearing golf clothes (polo and lightweight pants and the women were all wearing long sleeves, long pants and head wear. I was angry.

Modest dress does not mean women have to cover up from head to toe because men cannot control their base urges (which is basically the reason why). It is nothing but repression and it angers me.

Of course, I would never say anything, it is their culture, but it really does piss me off.

I consider myself a very progressive person, but I came pretty close to losing it when I saw a woman wearing a niqab in Cambridge, Mass. last summer. One part of me knew it was her right, the other part was viscerally repelled. I think about it a lot, because it showed me I’m not as open minded as I’d like.

It’s her right. It’s not her husband’s or her imam’s.

I feel the same way when I see the occasional niqab (although hijabs don’t have anything like the effect). It’s really complicated.

I see high heels as repression. I only say it here.

I think I’ve worn make up maybe a half a dozen times in my life. I HATE IT. It never looks right, it’s time consuming, and it makes me even more self conscious about my looks than I am without it. When I was a kid, I was never told I was pretty or cute or anything and no one ever bothered to show me how to use make up or apply it. Wearing make up never made me more pretty or anything, so what the hell is the point? Now that I’m in my 50s, I have pretty clear skin, never had clogged pores, hardly had more than a few pimples. I wear a moisturizer with sunscreen, tweeze my eyebrows sometimes and wear lip balm once in awhile. I’m not at all a girly girl, which kind of makes me sad sometimes, but it’s who I am. I’m not ever going to turn heads or be called beautiful, I’ve learned to be mostly ok with it, but I kind of feel like I’ve missed something sometimes.

To me, they feel like trying to walk around on tip-toe all the time, with a platform/teeny spike to help with balance. Which rarely actually helps, but rather throws off my expectation of when my feet are going to hit the ground and how it will feel.

Sure, I could practice and probably get better, but I don’t see the point.

Yeah it just sounds uncomfortable. Tip toe sounds better than ice skates. I guess I thought ice skates since skates have a certain slope to them. Thre’s nothing in men’s fashion like that. I mean I don’t like wearing ties but they’re not unbearably uncomfortable either.

I saw something in a tool store a while back, it was a craft/work knife with a retractable blade. The neat thing was that the blade was locked in the out position by a safety lever on the grip. If the user let go of the knife, put it down or whatever the blade automatically retracted back into the handle. It was probably fast enough that if it was dropped the blade would retract before it hit your foot.

I didn’t offer to test it that far.

The mini food processor is my favorite kitchen toy.

I finally gave away my mini Cuisinart one and bought a full size one about a year and a half ago. It’s very, very scary.

I mostly gave up heels several years ago. I still have a pair or two for those occasions when they are absolutely necessary. As for shaving, menopause seems to have solved that for me.

Menopause didn’t solve the shaving thing for me (as my mom claimed it did for her) but being restrained from sharp objects for a while did, and I couldn’t think of a reason to start up again.

The difference IS choice.

The rest is my assumption…which is what I was initially responding to. I am sorry if I offended anyone with my own assumptions, but that’s how I feel.

I think the reason you got the pushback you did is in part because your assumption denies the woman any agency in her decision. Your default assumption is, from what you told us, that because they are Muslim, they are only doing it because they are being forced to.

Would you have the same reaction to a woman who is a stay-at-home mom? An Amish woman who also observes modest dress? An Orthodox Jewish woman? A professional woman who is always turned out perfectly with make-up, hair, and heels? You could argue equally that all of these are some form of repression.

Just some food for thought.

I have the full size one and I don’t use it nearly as often because it is a bigger pain to clean and I don’t need the capacity most of the time.

But the little one means I never have to chop garlic by hand again HOORAY. Also great for salad dressings and tapenades and chopping more garlic.

It probably is useful perspective to note that when I put garlic in something, we are typically talking a minimum of 8 cloves.

There’s a girl in my area that I’ve seen on my way to work in the mornings. She wears a full niqab. It caught me off guard the first couple of times I saw her but the last time, she had a group of girlfriends call to her and run to join her at the bus stop she was waiting at. All the girls who ran to meet her looked just like any other high school or college kids. Their body language showed they accepted it, so I realized that my biases were showing through.

I don’t understand it, since most of the Muslim women I see daily wear a hijab with regular clothing, but it’s not my place to tell that girl she’s bad or evil for wearing it. She’s clearly comfortable with it.

I get it. I totally get it. I cannot help that that is my knee-jerk reaction to seeing that specific scene, or any time I see a man with women who are covered but the guy is not. Until all women are given the choice of what they want to wear, that is likely going to be my default reaction because all I see is men who cannot control their libido and women who have to do it for them.

V97.33X sucked into jet engine, initial encounter; 33D is for subsequent encounters
Y93.D: Activities involved arts and handcrafts
Y92.146: Swimming-pool of prison as the place of occurrence of the external cause
W61.62XA: Struck by duck, initial encounter
W22.02XD: V95.43XS: Spacecraft collision injuring occupant, sequela.
R46.1: Bizarre personal appearance.

“What the heck are people THINKING?” Did you really ask that question? Do you actually believe “thinking” has anything to do with 40% (or more) of the Republican Party supporting the candidacy of an inexperienced, policy-ignorant, bloviating, xenophobic, insult-hurling, pompous, ego-maniacal reality TV star for its nominee as President of the United States? “Thinking”, my friend, has absolutely nothing to do with it. This is pure “Id”, plain and simple — anger, cultural resentment, and a 45-year build-up of mindless, anti-government hostility, all coming together in a perfect storm of visceral, nihilistic rage and venom. I share your embarrassment, but it’s the bed they’ve been making for more than 2 generations now, and this is what it has come to: Donald J. Trump is the face and heart and soul of the Republican Party.

The whole point of Feminism has always been that women should make their own choices - something anti-Feminists have misunderstood or mis-portrayed. It’s not that a Feminist can’t be a stay-at-home Mom, or dress scantily, or work in one of those fields historically reserved for women. It’s that she can choose not to.

Basically, I have a problem with any belief system, religious or otherwise, that would limit a woman’s options.

There were around 13,000 ICD9 codes, and around 68,000 ICD10s.
Quick example, for a foot ulceration you chose between 707.14 (foot) and 707.15 (toe).
Now, not only do you have to choose the site, but there are different codes for right and left, and the severity of the wound. Those two codes are replaced with 16 codes.

What the fuck??

Ok, I have to leave the internet for a while.

Not only does this asshole espouse that while a woman might give in to having sex when she doesn’t want to, if her face isn’t glowing with appreciation, love and wontonness, a woman is withholding emotional love to go along with that sex - which makes it proper for the man to not look at the woman during sex as emotional retribution.

And this from the same guy.

In a column earlier this year, Solomon insisted that there was “no such thing as marital rape.” A wife, he said, could ask her husband to delay sex for a short period of time but the request “must be done humbly and respectfully, and always with the attitude in mind that her body does belong to her husband.”

The health care biz is transitioning from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes, which are classifications of diagnoses and conditions, with -10 being far more specific than -9. Some of the things that are included in -10 that aren’t in -9 are:
V97.33X sucked into jet engine, initial encounter; 33D is for subsequent encounters
Y93.D: Activities involved arts and handcrafts
Y92.146: Swimming-pool of prison as the place of occurrence of the external cause
W61.62XA: Struck by duck, initial encounter
W22.02XD: V95.43XS: Spacecraft collision injuring occupant, sequela.
R46.1: Bizarre personal appearance.

Just in case you need help with your workers’ comp claim.

My wife is studying ICD-10. I’ll have to give her that list.

In English we use the direct article “the” and the indirect article “a”. I remember in German there were I think 6 different words for the (der, die, das, des, dem, den) and another bunch for “a” (ein, eine, eines, einer, einen, einem) according to the gender (not biological), case and number.

OT a bit but not totally since we are a political blog after all but I finallly saw Outage, the documentary about closeted politicians. It’s a little dated since the politicians featured on there have since retired and the epilogue that describes Charlie Crist as a 2012 GOP frontrunner has since not happened due to Rubio successfully primarying Charlie and Charlie switching to the Democratic Party. I have to admit that in the past, I had a problem with outting but the activists interviewed in the docu made some good points. If these guys are going to be voting against gay people or involved in a party that is while having gay affairs themselves then yeah.

The weirdest part tot me is that while we’re urged to wear hijab, it’s not mandatory—i.e. not mandatory in the sense that there’s any sort of Shariah-based punishment on the books for it. I know this because I’ve looked for it and asked scholars about it (because of the places like Iran & Saudi Arabia that force women to wear it).

No one has ever been able to provide me any example of it being somehow “criminal” not to wear it. It simply isn’t there unless, as I assume they do in the countries that require it, some scholars get together and twist things into a logical pretzel to come up with a new “law” that suits them.

Thrown on the floor for refusing to obey?

For refusing to leave class:

Spring Valley High School officials and Richland County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after a video supposedly taken at the high school shows a confrontation between a female student and the school’s resource officer.

School officials confirm the incident happened on Monday, but stopped short of releasing further details.

According to Sheriff Leon Lott, the school resource officer was acting in response to a student who was refusing to leave class.

“The student was told she was under arrest for disturbing school and given instructions which she again refused,” Lott said. “The video then shows the student resisting and being arrested by the SRO.”

Yes and no. Their threshold is almost always much lower for black people. My original point was that we, as a society, either see this happening to a “person” or we don’t. Many of us, unfortunately, don’t. Those who do develop more and more contempt for authority, even when in many cases we’ve had nothing but good personal interactions with police, or have actually worked with police. Tweeps like @eclecticbrotha still actually work in municipal detention and are able to speak up. On the other end of the scale we have the those invested in the white angst industrial complex who will always side with police over people of color even while decrying the “police state” in general.

This is institutional racism personified, as demonstrated in the classic ABC News bike thief segment, people react differently to identical situation based on race without even realizing how grotesquely different their reactions are.

I heard this many years ago, with the venue changed to my beat in the California desert. Still a good one.

A Texas State trooper pulled a car over on I-35 about 2 miles south of Waco Texas. When the trooper asked the driver why he was speeding, the driver said he was a Magician and Juggler and was on his way to Austin Texas to do a show for the Shrine Circus. He didn’t want to be late.
The trooper told the driver he was fascinated by juggling and said if the driver would do a little juggling for him then he wouldn’t give him a ticket. He told the trooper he had sent his equipment ahead and didn’t have anything to juggle.
The trooper said he had some flares in the trunk and asked if he could juggle them. The juggler said he could, so the trooper got 5 flares, lit them and handed them to him.
While the man was juggling, a car pulled in behind the State Troopers car. A drunken good old boy from central Texas got out, watched the performance, then went over to the Trooper’s car, opened the rear door and got in. The trooper observed him and went over to the State car, opened the door asking the drunk what he thought he was doing.
The drunk replied, “You might as well take my ass to jail, cause there ain’t no way I can pass that test.”

It makes sense. A large part of the NH economy is built on tourism. With the dry and warm summer and autumn the leaves aren’t nearly as dramatic as in years past (I heard on the radio; I’m an outsider myself-recent transplant). If for some reason climate change led to a series of dry warm winters, the ski industry would suffer (and those damn ticks attacking the moose population, and….) Also, there’s a push from the seacoast area, too, from what I understand.

From 1991, Trump’s father busted for giving Donald’s casino an illegal $3.5 million loan to pay off debts.

One of Donald Trump’s casinos has admitted that it broke the law and violated terms of its license when the developer’s father lent it $3.5 million by purchasing gaming chips when he had no plans to gamble, the state Division of Gaming Enforcement said yesterday.

Through his attorney, Fred Trump bought 700 gray chips, each worth $5,000, in December so that Trump Castle Casino Resort would have enough cash to make an $18.4 million interest payment on its mortgage, the division said.

Trump Castle gets to keep the money, but must pay a $30,000 fine under terms of the settlement, Division Director Jack Sweeney said. Sweeney said Fred Trump also agreed to apply for a license as a financial source, which would make another such loan possible in June, when the next interest payment is due.

The loan from his father appears to have saved Trump a bundle. Not only did he avoid default on the bonds - and the risk of losing control of Trump Castle as a result - but patrons who hold gaming chips normally are not paid interest.

The amount of the proposed fine, $30,000, is less than one percent of the loan amount. That is a smaller sum than other casinos have paid banks for loan-origination fees on loans of that size, Casino Control Commission documents show.

20 years ago, in a basic criminal justice course, I learned a few different ways to apply simple arms and wrist locks that could be used to get someone to move and comply. They were uncomfortable, but only hurt when the subject resisted. You could get someone to stand up, sit down, walk them around the room, etc, and we learned the basics for all of them in just a couple of hours.

But you’re telling me a trained police officer, with years of training, has no choice but to chokeslam a teenage girl?

The thing is, hijab isn’t that simplistic (i.e. it’s not solely about men’s libido). Did you know that half of hijab is for the man to lower his gaze? I’ll bet you didn’t. There’s lots more to it, it’s not a binary thing. Maybe if you made an effort to educate yourself about it more you would understand it better and not have such a strong negative reaction. Or don’t, it’s totally up to you.

Being raised by nuns rather takes the terror out of the whole hijab thing.

Only if he’s lost his mind. Flynt is historically Dirty Left.

I was trying to logic that out. Perhaps Chuck knows he’s screwed the pooch on the right so now he’s trying moonbat welfare? If so…I think I have bad news for him.

Chuck is probably trying to sell Larry Flynt on one of his sleazy exposés based on the Ashley Madison hack. He’s desperate to raise cash right now as the judgment day in his idiotic lawsuit against Gawker approaches.

re: #172 Testy Toad T

It’s easy to forget or fail to ascribe agency to a person who is in a specific sense quite literally dehumanized, as in you can’t see their face or their expressions or their smile or the glow in the eye.

Maybe not a good reaction, but an understandable one. We’re visual and social creatures.

Actually, you can if you look at their eyes—you can easily see anger, sadness, even a smile when the corners of her eyes crinkle—I’ve seen it many, many times. I rarely see a woman wearing a niqab who also has her eyes veiled like this—in fact I can only remember seeing it a couple of times in my life. I’ve never see a woman wearing a burqa anywhere.

I have a test for anyone who’s willing to try it:

Women who wear the niqab in the West (especially converts) are used to people looking away from them, or looking at them with a mixture of fear/pity/disgust, so next time you see one why not try looking right at her briefly, giving her a genuine smile, and politely saying “assalamu aliekum.” I can pretty much guarantee you that you’ll be able to see a smile reach her eyes along with pleasant surprise, and maybe the next niqabi you see won’t bother you so much.

One last thought on the matter of religion and what women wear: Freedom of religion is like freedom of speech—as long as no laws are being broken we have to be willing to tolerate people’s choices regardless of whether we agree with or are comfortable with them or not.

re: #328 goddamnedfrank

From 1991, Trump’s father busted for giving Donald’s casino an illegal $3.5 million loan to pay off debts.

The amount of the proposed fine, $30,000, is less than one percent of the loan amount. That is a smaller sum than other casinos have paid banks for loan-origination fees on loans of that size, Casino Control Commission documents show.

So there was more than just that one time million $ loan. Daddy was probably pulling that fuckup business genius’s nuts out of the fire up until the day he died. Maybe Donny’s brother got all the brains.

Seriously, a 1 million dollar loan really is small in the real estate business. Why do you expect he will try not to hurt anyone’s feelings by pretending it’s a lot of money ? It clearly isn’t, so he isn’t politically correct about it, like he isn’t about anything.
What’s more, his line about make-up is obviously a joke. An old one I already heard 30 years ago.
The interview was quite interesting, I don’t understand why the only thing you have to say about it is some far-fetched sneers at his character.

Bullshit, a million dollar loan wasn’t small 45 years ago, even in the NYC real estate business. Do you even know how to account for inflation over long periods of time? Only a tiny fraction of 1% of Americans can just get a million dollar loan from their dads. He says it like he didn’t get a great inheritance but more like he suffered because hid dad told him “no” and only gave him a million. This is why so many people think he’s full of shit. He was born on 3rd base (which is fine), but he thinks he hit the triple that got him there, instead of recognizing his good fortune. All part of the “I’m the greatest businessman ever” charade that is the defining characteristic of his vanity campaign.

His “character” is a sick joke. He’s more like an insult comedian than a real presidential candidate. He’s lazy too. Listen to his “concrete” plans on issues. They all consist of “I’ll find the right people, the best people, and we’ll fix that problem, we’re looking into it.” The most detail he’s gone into is his immigration “plan”, which consists of only build fence and deport them all. It must have taken him 4 seconds of deep thought to come up with that.

re: #418 palomino

I’m telling you it objectively is a small loan, even 45 years ago, especially in real estate. Not to build a private home of course but I suppose you already got that. Your head must be exploding when he is showing off with his billions. This is how he is; the other side of the political specter brags about how many billions they can loot for their voters when in power, he brags about his own money. It’s not very polite and I would never do that, but it’s incomparably better then what his opponents do.

Building a fence is a very concrete plan, easy to realize, effective and cheap. It has been done all over the world and works fine. This is a no brainer and will vastly reduce the illegal immigration influx.

Now for the rest you are right, he doesn’t have a lot of concrete plans. Here in Europe, this is the most normal thing : nobody has concrete plans : that’s called being un-nuanced and populist. I don’t know how concrete the Dem’s plans are, I’m not an American, but Trump at least has one good and effective policy plan, and I like how he says what’s on his mind. It probably won’t work but hell, at least it will be interesting to watch the others react to him.

WTF, Peterman. The simple point is that a one million dollar loan is HUUUUUUUGE, in the sense that very few people receive such a gift and only the most entitled (like Trump) would act like it’s modest. Trump is an insulting boorish loudmouth, not fit to govern even a tiny country, much less the US. His xenophobia is disgusting, and his followers are know-nothing populist right wingers, the kinds of idiots who get easily swayed by a demagogic Mussolini-type phony tough guy.

You don’t know shit about American culture if you think heads are exploding over Donald’s billions. America has hundreds of billionaires, and they flash their wads all the time…it’s like a sport here in the US. Not so much heads exploding, as people yawning about the douchebag who can’t shut up about his money, because he’s got no other qualification.

The US has an ugly history when it comes to treatment of minorities, almost as ugly as Europe’s. But we’re a melting pot, and thus unlike any European nation. The notion of demonizing and deporting millions of people due to their ethnicity is repugnant to most of us.

As for building a wall, you might want to consider the fact that 40% of illegal immigrants come to the US by plane. So much for your effectiveness argument.

Your line equating taxes to “looting for their voters” gives you away. You’re a tea bagger stuck in Europe. Are you a member of a nationalist party?
