Also from the Daily Mail was have this story, wherein a Saudi prince tried and failed to be Gustavo Fring in real life:

Saudi prince arrested over two tonnes of amphetamines being loaded on his private jet after Lebanese officials foil the biggest drug smuggling attempt in its history

A Saudi prince has been arrested after two tonnes of amphetamines were seized before they were due to be loaded onto his private jet in Lebanon, it has been revealed.

Lebanese officials say they have foiled one of the biggest drug smuggling attempts in the country’s history after the haul of pills was found at Beirut airport.

Saudi prince Abdel Mohsen Bin Walid Bin Abdulaziz and four others were detained while allegedly ‘attempting to smuggle about two tons of pills and some cocaine,’ a security source said.

I hope this prince gets to be ruler of a concrete cell for the next couple decades.

About that video from Spring Valley High in South Carolina; I don’t care how mouthy or rude the gal was to her teacher or the assaulting officer, the actions taken by the officer amount to felony assault. Chances are she was being a typical moody teenager in a new school (reports say she was a new student). The violence inflicted on her was fucked. If you think that the gal *deserved* what happened to her because of her behavior, you’re a fucking racist.

There’s nothing short of a physical attack on her part that could excuse that reaction on his part, IMO. You don’t do that to someone who’s just mouthing off. Not unless you really hate your job, and don’t mind losing it and a substantial chunk of your future earnings.

Yeah, but when the cop grabbed her by the throat and tried to yank he out of the desk she started flailing around, which means she was resisting arrest and/or assaulting an officer, so she deserved it and the cop did nothing wrong.

And I fucking wish I was joking, but I’ve already seen people making that argument.

China is working on a massive “social credit” system, which goes far beyond credit-worthiness scores. Imagine if Peeple joined forces with Facebook, Twitter, credit scoring agencies like Experian, the national crime database and the secret police to create a giant database of everything you do online and everything everyone else has about you online.

Coming Out Could Mean Jail Time in Russia
Yes, it could become illegal to come out as gay in Russia. The freepers are delirious in their approval, since the news gives them a chance to indulge two of their favorite pastimes, gay-bashing and Putin-love.

“Fine with me. Its legal to be gay there. You just cant propagandize children. And that’s what this “coming out” BS is. Nobody has to “come out” to just live their life.”

“Wish we woulda had this law a few decades back.”

“Good for Russia. Those with nasty habits will not be marketing the vile behavior to others other than their perversion partner. What they keep private won’t get them in trouble.”

This one spells it out:

“Seems like every week lately, Russia is a better run country than our dear Republic. It’s nice to see a government treat homosexuality as the mental illness it is.”

60 years ago, the right wing wanted to hang people who promoted Kremlin policy as an example for this country; or at least exile them to the wilds of darkest Berkeley. Now they are those people.

At this point, I have no doubt that Stalin would have been enormously popular with the American right if he hadn’t threatened their corporate overlords or bashed organized superstition (something he quit doing during World War II, btw).

And even if she did, Fuck That Shit.
And if you look at the kids in the front of the room, you can tell that officers doing this is a normal occurrence.

I went to a high school with about a 50/50 white-minority split. Lower on the socioeconomic ladder. Had multiple officers in the building. But one of the things our school system did was to place a large number of minority officers there. They engaged in community policing in the school. Sure everyone knew who the drug dealers and gang members were. But even when there would be confrontations, nothing like this happened, or was accepted. Worked out the way it was supposed to. Even had some friends (and nearly myself) join the local police force. Some work as officers in the schools.

It is times like this that I am thankful that UpChuck is banned from Twitter. Can you imagine the tweets he’d post in re: #AssaultAtSpringValleyHigh? Just unbridled ugliness.

That said, he has access to Twitter. He’s not being a fucking loudmouth, though. Maybe he got some good advice from the Burns Law Firm in St. Louis and “weev,” his neo-nazi buddy hiding out in eastern Europe who strangely still has a Twitter account. UpChuck is there, though. @CCJFans

I’ve worked at Social Security for 37 years. Dealt with lots of people like Ginger Snapped and I know how he will eventually wind up. In a couple years he’ll be on Supplemental Security Disability living on the fringes of Skid Row in Los Angeles. He’ll also be banned from our offices for his behavior. You’ll see him pushing a shopping cart around shuffling from mission to mission downtown and he’ll still mumble about how he hates the Government.

Cannot underestimate his political savvy. I’ve been a huge fan of MSF for quite some time - they do the work that few (any) are willing to do in providing health care to those in the middle of war zones, lawless regions, and virulent epidemics. Time and again, their staff put their lives on the line to help others.

And again, their staff has come under fire. This time, Saudi airstrikes hit a MSF facility in Saana, Yemen causing casualties.

The coalition, which includes Saudi Arabia, had the coordinates of the clinic.

If there were a rash of teachers abusing students, we’d want to do something about it so why are cops any different? The police unions seem upset that we are holding them to a high standard. They act as if we don’t respect cops. I think it shows less respect to cops to just excuse police brutality. We get it. Being a cop isn’t easy but you still have to respect people’s rights. And if that makes me anti cop, so be it, I actually think the idiots like Crowder who make excuses for police brutality are actually more so since they think being a good cop means brutalizing people.

We have to realize that at least some (many?) of the big city police unions echo the NRA anti gun control strategy on “cop control”. Like climate denial echoes tobacco company tactics. They get to define the circumstance, control the whole discussion or you are some kind of horrible liberal or… something.

We also bought into the notion that more police officers = better police protection without thinking about the costs and effort that go into training police officers to do their job properly. It is not just a matter of sheer numbers.

And then we send them out into a social setting in which guns are easily accessible, crime is widespread and social tensions are high. We are asking a lot more than we are prepared to pay for, and incidents like the recent classroom beating are what arise from it.

There’s reports out today about a homicide spike, which points to selected cities where there have indeed been year over year increases in homicides.

But that ignores the wider trend, which is that crime rates continue to decline. The FBI announced that crime rates continued to drop from 2013 in their 2014 crime statistic compendium. They haven’t put together the 2015 stats, so it’s hard to tell what’s going on - but we’re at or near historic lows on crime across the nation, even as there are pockets where crime remains a major concern.

So of course the GOP will claim that crime is out of control, when the fact is that crime rates (overall or per capita) have not been this low in generations.

137
Fourth Football of the Apocalypse  Oct 27, 2015 • 7:22:40am

There’s a tentative budget deal that would increase the debt limit till 2017 and some folks aren’t liking it:

Louisiana Republican Rep. John Fleming told reporters Boehner essentially “threw committee chairmen under the bus” and suggested this big deal was being dropped on members now because the committees failed to do their work.

But, in Fleming’s telling, House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, R-Georgia, pushed back, saying that he was in fact working on fiscal reforms but was told by leadership to stand down.

Roughly 10 House conservatives got up and complained in the meeting about the process of cutting a major deal and rushing it to the floor without going through regular order, lawmakers said.

WHO GAVE THE STAND DOWN ORDER???!?!?

Still, the private talks and the frantic effort to push the measure into law only prompted sharp criticism from many House and Senate Republicans, who contended that Boehner gave away too much in the name of getting a deal.

Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, strongly objected to the deal.

“We’re not just here to take commands,” Amash said. “People back home expect us to participate in the process. I hope that Paul Ryan will let us know how he feels about the process.”

NYC produces weekly crime stats, which include comparisons to last year, including year over year, 2 year, 5 year, 10 year, and even comparing to 1990, 1993, 1998, and 2000.

You get a real sense of how crime has been slashed in the city, so even a weekly or monthly blip evens out over time. It also shows that even while rape and murder in NYC is up slightly YTD, all the other crimes are actually down 3.1% from last year.

This is America indeed though where privileged white conservatives look for everything to rationalize violence against black people and try to talk down to them.

Time and again, we see how serial killers (who are white), mass murderers (who are white) and countless other categories of criminals are not abused by law enforcement, including those who are cop killers, but when the suspect/perpetrator is a minority, there appears to be an outpouring of excuses from people who think that the minority being abuse somehow deserved it through their actions - that the cop/authority figure is justified in the use of force (including deadly force) for not listening.

All the while, these same folks are talking about standing up against authority up to and including use of force and deadly force with firearms as their god-given 2d Amendment solution to government overreach.

A black girl who simply refuses to comply with putting away their phone can be manhandled, but the Crowderheads come out of the woodwork to blame the excessive force on the girl who simply had their phone out.

Exactly. We have seen people who actually have murdered people treated respectfully by the cops and without brutality. It’s why I don’t buy the excuse of a stressful work environment on police misconduct and brutality. Alex Holmes, Dylann Roof, and others actually killed people and the cops not only caught them alive but without much harm or any harm to them. This young woman refused to put away a cell phone and she gets bodyslammed. You have to be a particularly fucked up individual and nothing about Stevie Crowder suggests to me he isn’t to attempt to rationalize that.

Rubio is anti-choice, and hates his job. He doesn’t do his own job, even as he complains that if some federal worker missed their job, they should be fired.

Rubio has missed a majority of the votes in the Senate, and complains that he can’t get anything done in the Senate even though the GOP has the majority. If he can’t get anything done in a Senate that the GOP controls, how should anyone take him seriously when dealing with the Middle East or US-Russia or US-China relations, let alone North Korea or Iran? Frankly, the only way he’s more qualified for the job than I am is one simple thing. The age requirement. The media really should be asking him- what on earth qualifies you to be in charge of a country. Same thing with Trump but at least Trump can point to be being chairman of a large company. And that’s the thing. Trump seems beloved because of his hatred of minorities. That’s definitely what drew the racist psycho Coulter to him for sure.

Just entirely out of his element and unaware of what he is letting himself be played for.

I am learning to ignore these GOP poll leaders and concentrate on Rubio, who seems the likeliest to actually gain the nomination and butt heads with Hillary.

He scares me the most because he comes off as reasonable. But he’s not. His past words show how right wing he is. Rubio has already started his Etch-a-Sketch period. Whether it gets him through the primary or not remains to be seen.

What I still can’t quite grasp is where Carson came from. How does a neurosurgeon make the leap from that profession to “I’m going to run for POTUS as a thinly-disguised theocrat”? Whose idea was this?

We’ve had crazy-eyed theocrats run for POTUS before, but at least most of them have had experience in elected office. This guy doesn’t have a solid grasp on budgets, foreign policy, or just about anything besides the very narrow focus he has on a handful of social issues dear to the GOP base.

How can anyone objectively look at Carson the candidate and say he’d make a good President?

Rubio is anti-choice, and hates his job. He doesn’t do his own job, even as he complains that if some federal worker missed their job, they should be fired.

Rubio has missed a majority of the votes in the Senate, and complains that he can’t get anything done in the Senate even though the GOP has the majority. If he can’t get anything done in a Senate that the GOP controls, how should anyone take him seriously when dealing with the Middle East or US-Russia or US-China relations, let alone North Korea or Iran? The guy is a lightweight and he can’t even do the job that Floridians sent him to DC to do.

I got a DCCC flyer in the mail, and they ask a bunch of questions about who I think is the toughest challenger, who I think should be the Democrats nominee, and priorities for the party.

I get that the DCCC does this to make it appear inclusive and responsive to Democrats, but here’s the thing.

Democrats have to get this straight -

1) GOTV is paramount, and it starts with local elections. The more Democrats are elected to positions, the better it is for the party nationally. It builds up the bench, and it also translates into a stronger GOTV (a positive feedback loop).
2) It shouldn’t matter who the opponent is in November 2016. The GOP agenda is, with minor disagreements, remarkably consistent in rolling back civil rights, women’s rights, abortion rights, etc. It wont matter who the GOP nominates - they’re going to seek the same kind of policy changes, especially with a Congress that remains in GOP hands.
3) Supreme Court nominations is going to be a huge part of the race - as it should be. There’s a potential for a couple of nominations that could swing the makeup of the Court and put decisions like Roe at risk of reversal.
4) GOTV.
5) Overcoming Clinton-fatigue is easier when you understand that the alternative is a GOP dominated government that will roll back the safety net, and has made it its mission to destroy Obamacare, even as it’s helped reduce uninsured rates, and continue shifting tax burdens from the rich to everyone else.
6) GOTV.
7) GOTV.
8) GOTV.
9) GOTV.
10) GOTV (get the hint). GOTV makes all the other things possible.

Bet it would have defused the situation.

Engaging a student puts them at legal risk. They don’t have any kind of coverage and could be sued. A teacher perhaps but not a student.

First world problem: Microsoft Win10 does not recognize a CD boot file that is deemed a security risk. It also is critical to hundreds of older games including the Civ series. To complete the FU, the last time my Vista machine went online, MS ran an update that reaches back and disables it in Vista and Win7. The workaround is to edit the registry each time you wish to play one of these games.

Windows users need a security patch to protect their machines from Microsoft.

I totally agree. I was just suggesting something which might be more effective.
Kids that age can be extremely frustrating. They know exactly how far the school is allowed to go in making them do something. The key word is allowed. Obviously the officer exceeded that because of his frustration. That is why he shouldn’t have a school assignment. It takes a certain kind of temperament to do that sort of work and he doesn’t have it.

I had plenty of days in high school where I checked out and didn’t really “participate” in class (as did many classmates). I can’t imagine any of my teachers/administrators decided that the best way to handle it was having a cop/security guard physically remove us from the class room. If she’s just sitting there doodling (or hell, even napping - did that a few times), what’s the issue?

It is, therefore, entirely possible that Trump might be the only person who qualifies for the floor ballot, but won’t have enough delegates to secure the nomination on the first ballot. Talk about the ultimate shitshow…

Here’s what gets me and Timothy’s cartoon nailed it. After shootings, we do talk about limiting certain forms of speech whether that’s video games, music, movies, etc. Do gun nuts not see the problem with that while acting like policies like background checks, closing the gun show loophole, etc are somehow attacks on the very foundation of the 2nd? The second isn’t meant to be “Get as many guns as you can with no regulations.” And frankly I think many gun owners time and time again prove themselves irresponsible. I hear so much about “good guys” with guns whose guns go off and either they themselves are injured or killed or worse a child is. I really think firearm ownership should be regulated for the precise reason we’re talking about a machine that can in a second end a human life.

So, looks like I’ll be running the entertainment at the annual Halloween Party. For the audience’s viewing delectation, I’ve decided (with my boss’ approval) to go with John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Auto racks or car max setups. 20-22 motor vehicles. The “windows” aren’t windows per se, but ventilation to keep the interiors from becoming blistering hot and potentially damaging to the vehicles - and the personnel who have to shift the vehicles in/out at the origination/termination points.

It also reduces freight-related damage such as when debris hits the vehicles (road debris as when carried by a truck on a car-carrier) to say nothing of vandalism, theft, or unauthorized personnel riding on the car carrier.

american-rails.com

Versions have been around for decades, but only more recently have tri-level cars been in widespread usage. The manufacturers of cars found this to be a huge time/cost saver due to protecting vehicles from damage and efficiency of moving large numbers of vehicles at a time.

I think with horror and suspense what holds up to me are the themes. RW came out hell before even my mom was born but the feeling of uneasy you get when you look through Jeff’s camera at the neighbors is great. Just like with the Thing. The paranoia you feel the members having is great. I think ultimately the best horror have transcendent themes like that. Now that said, Insidious scared the crap out of me and I can’t listen to Tiny Tim without being freaked the hell out.

It’s not bad but it’s not the same IMO. I haven’t read the original Novella. I just love how Carpenter’s version is pretty simple in its brilliance. You have about 8-10 guys so there’s not too many characters. In a way, it’s kind of like a horror version of Lumet’s 12 Angry Men. It works in its limitations. It has so many memorable scenes. re: #411 The Vicious Babushka

Neither Obama nor his health care law literally cut funding from the Medicare program’s budget. Rather, the health care law instituted a number of changes to try to bring down future health care costs in the program.

What kind of spending reductions are we talking about? They were mainly aimed at insurance companies and hospitals, not beneficiaries. The law made significant reductions to Medicare Advantage, a subset of Medicare plans run by private insurers. Medicare Advantage was started under President George W. Bush, and the idea was that competition among the private insurers would reduce costs. But the plans have actually cost more than traditional Medicare. So the health care law scales back the payments to private insurers.

Hospitals, too, will be paid less if they have too many re-admissions, or if they fail to meet other new benchmarks for patient care.

It’s a fundamental misunderstanding/misapplication of information. Huckabee claims this was a cut. That isn’t how it worked. The ACA tries to reduce costs by getting providers to make fewer mistakes, reduce costs, etc. That includes reducing readmissions by doing more to make sure that patients are stable, that they’re getting proper care after being discharged, etc.

Huckabee is flat-out lying.

Oh, and I’ve got a bunch of Crowderheads tweeting nonsensical ravings who don’t like the fact that they wouldn’t have liked it if the cop did this to their own kid, though one of them said that they’d do far worse if a cop/security had to respond to their actions (which again, never rose to the point where this kind of force was required in the first place).

I don’t. I’ve pulled people away from that a-hole, TSG. I’m not perfect, but on the matter of Michael Savage my hands are scarred but clean.

As long as you continue to reflexively support his party, none of you is clean. You can’t have it both ways. When your party becomes xenophobic, anti-immigrant, racist, and run by religious extremists, you don’t get to stay a member AND wash your hands of the whole thing. That’s just dishonest crap.

re: #411 The Vicious Babushka

On Medicare and Social Security: Nancy Altman, the president of Social Security Works, a group that strenuously opposes benefits cuts and argues for their expansion, tells me that the deal “doesn’t actually cut benefits or really hurt beneficiaries who aren’t gaming the system.”

Altman says the Medicare cuts are all on the provider side, which could harm beneficiaries at some point, but it’s not a major concern. “On the Medicare side, they limited their cuts to far in the future, and to providers,” Altman says. “There’s time to correct that.”

On the change to Social Security, Altman says: “They stiffened the penalties for fraud, they extended nationwide efforts to make sure that payments are accurate and they closed a loophole in which people were gaming the system. They didn’t change eligibility requirements or reduce the level of benefits.”

I was thinking about that yesterday, you know why? I knew it was coming up soon because last year I bought a Halloween font that was on sale that was all dingbats (I made the “Tag! You’re it.” monster with it)—the part about you is that I bought it because one of the dingbats was a really creepy/funny looking crow and I was gonna make you something with it. I never got to. :-(

I’m really, really glad you’re here for this Halloween. {{{wrenchwench}}}

Thanks for thinking of me! I have a Halloween association too; yesterday someone who has a kid in the preschool (where the woman who gave me CPR works) came to see if it’s OK to bring the kids here on Halloween. (They trick-or-treat the businesses.) I still have some of what I got for them last year, but I’m going to get a fresh bag for this year!

Oh, and if people start screaming about the 20% SSDI cut, this deal prevents it:

“The new agreement also would prevent a 20 percent cut in benefits next year to the 11 million Americans enrolled in the Social Security Disability Insurance program. The cut would be avoided by diverting some of the incoming payroll tax money from Social Security’s much bigger retirement insurance program for six years, something Republicans previously said they wouldn’t do without cuts to benefits.”

That Gaboon viper? Nasty one. Apparently (luckily) they’re pretty shy and you basically have to step on one or really provoke the crap out of it to get bitten, but they have the longest fangs of any snake and put out a HUGE amount of venom with one bite. The main toxin is… can’t remember the medical term, but it has something to do with proteins and breaking down the walls of your cells, causing them to burst and leak into the surrounding tissue—you basically hemorrhage to death from every orifice within 15 minutes. My favorite urban myth though is this one. A guy’s driving to prom or some kind of high school dance. He sees a pretty girl on the highway. He picks her up. They go to the dance and have a real good time. They get in the car and he gives her his jacket since she’s chilly. She also insists that he drop her off at the side of the road. He realizes the next day that he left his jacket with her and tries to find out where she lives. He finds a house. An older woman opens the door. She has a daughter but her daughter died in a car accident twenty years prior. Are You Afraid of the Dark, my favorite horror program as a kid in the 90’s did a variation on it.

Auto racks or car max setups. 20-22 motor vehicles. The “windows” aren’t windows per se, but ventilation to keep the interiors from becoming blistering hot and potentially damaging to the vehicles - and the personnel who have to shift the vehicles in/out at the origination/termination points.

Actually, while that movie was played for laughs, it actually creeped me out more than most other zombie movies.

True, it’s creepier than 2 was, though 3 is a genuine horror film. Thank God there were no more sequels after that.

He goes to the cemetery to visit her grave and there’s his jacket hanging on the tomb stone.

The story gets around and pretty soon all the guys recognize this creepy girl and don’t stop to pick her up.

So though, I’ve got this idea for a novella or short story or maybe even a screenplay. Basically, a regular middle aged guy starts his day like any other day. He feels his memory slowly fading- he forgets things like his wife and kids’ names, where he works, etc. He goes to bed and wakes up as a toddler- revealing that his entire life that he thought he had known was a dream. I’ve never written anything lke that before but I think it would be brilliant.

Nah, a little different than Benjamin Button. Benjamin Button actually was getting younger slowly. It’s a similar premise I concede but in this, the whole thing was a dream- the wife, the kids, the life, etc.

A particular trope which I think has played its course nowadays.

In every zombie movie where they’re a new occurrence, there is the obligatory scene where soldiers/cops fight the zombies and unload their weapons into them with no effect before they get overrun. This has gone on for far too long and doesn’t work on generations raised with zombie movies.

A platoon of soldiers faces a horde, aims center mass and they don’t go down. A soldier yells, “Guys! They’re zombies! Headshots!” and switch their tactics.

If the story in my town was 30 or 40 years later, it’d have been a car crash, but since it was 1910, it had to be a carriage. I wonder if people still go to the old cemetery to look for her. It was a thing to do back in the day, if only because the old cemetery is now in the middle of a residential neighborhood and we had nothing else to do in that bloody town.

I’m a big fan of horror movies and most of the sub-genres (with the exception of torture porn). Here are a few of my favorites:

Lake Mungo: Not really scary, but still one of my favorites. A slow burn that (IMO) has a satisfying payoff.

What We Do In The Shadows: a vampire comedy, told in a faux-documentary style. Lighthearted fun with some clever takes on the vampire mythology. Interestingly enough, the director and main character has been tabbed to direct Thor: Ragnarok.

Frankenstein’s Army: Not a great film by any stretch (very light on plot/story/characters/etc), but fun for it’s frenetic pace and utterly batshit crazy creative creature design

The DVD included two smaller movies, both effectively video journals of events as they happened. The first is a news broadcast that starts at the beginning of the reports of “unprovoked violence” and goes for close to 16 hours before leaving the air. The second is the gun shop owner slowly breaking down, starting from his first run-in with a zombie to just before the big climax of the film.

re: #544 HappyWarrior

Not really, the whole town used to be a handful of Spanish land grant ranches. The residential area was built on the site of one of the main ranches. They had a private cemetery (apparently one of the oldest in California) on the ranch. Since people don’t like to move cemeteries, it has remained more or less the same while the rest of the city has gone from ranches to suburb. There’s another one like that in Whittier (I think), old, tiny little cemetery (maybe a dozen graves) in the middle of an industrial area.
