Ben Carson Edges Ahead Nationally in New Poll. Why?

A theory that is mine
Politics • Views: 59,064

For the first time, Ben Carson has edged ahead of Donald Trump in a new national Times/CBS News poll.

Why is Trump slipping?

I strongly suspect it’s because Donald Trump isn’t religious enough for the right wing base; they love his anti-immigrant xenophobia and his megalomaniac personality, but when he tries to appear as a pious Bible-thumper it’s just not believable, even to people who’ll believe almost anything.

Ben Carson, on the other hand, is the real deal; a religious fanatic who believes the Earth was created in six literal days, rejects the science of evolution and the Big Bang and pretty much everything else not related to neurosurgery, and is convinced the End Times are coming. When Ben Carson waves a Bible around, he’s not pandering in the least.

Xenophobia counts for a lot to the right wing, but honest religious fanaticism of the extreme fundamentalist variety is even more appealing.

Q: Why are Carson and Trump leading the GOP field?

A: Because some people just want to watch the world burn.

lawhawk  Oct 27, 2015 • 11:18:16am

You might be on to something, but I think it may have to do with poll-chasing. Carson’s had a string of good polls out of Iowa, which is far more extreme than the general GOP population, so voters in other states are taking note of Carson’s rise in Iowa, and are deciding that he’s going to be their leader for now.

Until he says something that is so outrageous that they’ll move on to the next flavor of the month.

Oh wait, he might have just stepped in it:

Americans apparently want a theocratic dictatorship rather than a fascist one. No practical difference in the end, but carrying a cross and a bible wrapped in the flag will get you power faster than just the flag.

Ben is also doing better with the Fundie Christian voters, many of them see Trump as a man who made his millions on gambling, drinking and whoremongering.

No way the Donald can shake that image.

‘Coz he did…

13 Ridiculous Things Ben Carson Actually Believes

Anarchy could cancel the 2016 election

Carson warned in an interview in 2014 that if we “continue down this pathway that we are going down,” referring to “this pathway where everything is framed in a political sense and our representatives are not working for the people, they’re working for their party,” then the anarchy could lead to the 2016 election being called off. He claimed that the growing national debt, ISIS and the then-Democratic controlled U.S. Senate’s refusal to consider legislation passed by the Republican House of Representatives all pointed toward the idea that the country is headed toward anarchy.

If Carson’s prediction proved to be true, he said, Obama could declare martial law and the 2016 election would not occur.

This is the ultimate wingnut revolution fantasy, in which they get to completely ignore the inconvenient rule of law.

Yes, but it’s also a big detriment, because a large portion of the GOP voting base actually is racist. A lot of those people won’t be able to hold their noses and vote for an African American just for the optics.

So true. I see them do that with all minority conservatives. Remember the idiot who called Sanders a national socialist. He’s Mexican-American and the white liberals who criticized his ignorance were told they couldn’t do it because “He’s Latino, he knows what socialism is.” Now nevermind the fact that the guy is American born and raised and has never actually lived in a socialist country. Wingnuts fling all sorts of racist shit but the second a liberal criticizes a minority conservative, they’re racists and t’s proof of liberalism’s “real racism.” Nevermind the fact that Carson would be equally loony if he were white and there are a lot more white Ben Carson types in this country than black ones who believe the crazy shit he does about slavery and the Holocaust.

It is entirely possible the ultimate nominee will lose Iowa. This was the case in both 2008 and 2012, although Mitt was “accidentally” declared the winner.

The question if Trump and his organization are pragmatic enough to recognize this and move more of their time and effort elsewhere. One suspects that Trump’s ego may be so fragile that it cannot stand up to being second (or third) place ANYWHERE.

I’m already getting it too. My response is, “Last I checked, crazy knows no racial boundaries.”

Calling me a racist for having issues with Ben Carson is a dead-end proposition. I have a photographic memory for words. I just fling back the shit I’ve been hearing for the past 7 years and it tends to make the point.

I think not only is it possible, it’s probable. Bush was the last Iowa winner to win the whole thing. NH and SC will be interesting though. The eventual winner I predict will win one of those three.

So this proposed budget deal…basically kicks the political can to 2017. The WH didn’t give up anything as near as I can tell.

A bit surprised. If approved, the RWNJ will have to wait a couple of years before setting the world on fire.

I will laugh my ass off if Boehner gets rid of the Hastert rule long enough to get the Dems and a small number of GOP he’s strong-armed into voting for the deal.

The RWNJ head explosions will be glorious.

They firmly believe that Romney the 2016 GOP candidate will be the POTUS and then they can collectively burn it all down.

Nah, they just know that if they don’t punt until ‘17, the lunatics in the House will demand a default before the ‘16 election, thereby ensuring that no republican ever gets elected again.

This also means that this crap won’t be going on as people head to the voting booth next November. And that programs like the one who helped my son land a job won’t be cut, thus making the whole process longer and more drawn out than need be. We had huge setbacks during the whole sequester nonsense. Of course that’s not stopping them from scaremongering people about disability benefits and the like, but it won’t take long for people to see it’s bullshit.

The Kid is heading into his 3rd night at work pretty soon. For all the flaws (and trust me, the system and the programs in it are flawed like a mofo) and dragged out time frame involved, it is really a relief to see my kid smiling and happy and responsible going into work. He knew he had to work from 5 til midnight tonight so he took a nap after lunch. He’s made a couple of metalhead friends at work already. He’s stopped biting his nails and chewing on everything. The pacing and self stim repetitive behaviors have lessened dramatically. All from being treated like a human being. Imagine that.

Q: Why are Carson and Trump leading the GOP field?

A: Because some people just want to watch the world burn.

And most of them, I’m sure, are going to want to watch it on cable or satellite, from the comfort of their Lay-Z-Boy recliners in their own living rooms, beers in hand, gloating over the imagined comeuppance for Those People, and serene in the assumption that tomorrow will be a Glorious New Day In History.

At least until they finally realize that Fox News isn’t going to be going back on the air any time soon….

Carson. He’d be all about starting Armageddon.

Trump would only care about inflating his bank account at the countries expense. Damaging but not destroying everything.

Kinda ruins the whole cops as target thing.

That idiot Scott Walker was going on and on about how Obama’s America isn’t like the one he grew up when it comes to cop safety. Well someone pulled up the statistics of cops killed in the Reagan years when Scotty came of age and nearly twice as much cops were killed despite a smaller population. POTUS is right, every cop being killed is a tragedy but safety of cops isn’t a big problem. Of course, you want everyone who kills a cop to be prosecuted and they are and in fact people who kill cops are far more likely to be sentenced to death. Cops who kill unarmed people are seldom even indicated let alone convicted.

When I see Carson and the wingnut End Times fetish, I see it largely as a crutch in the wake of the Cold War’s end. They need something scare people to the polls, like they used to with the idea that a vote for a Democrat was a vote for nuclear war with the Russkies.

The study identifies bacon and processed meats as raising risks. Okay. Not all pork is treated as a processed meat.

The study reflects some common sense.

Portion control. Regularly consuming large portions of certain kinds of foods raise risks of disease. (DUH!)

How best to reduce your risks? Consume smaller portions, or limit intake. It doesn’t say that you can’t eat bacon or grilled ribeye steaks, but if you have ‘em - do so in moderation.

Toxicity is in the dose as they say.

May not need to work all that hard at all:

Seventy percent of respondents who selected a candidate to support in the survey also said that it’s still too early in the race to say for sure that their selection is the person they will ultimately back. Only 28 percent of respondents said that they had conclusively settled on one candidate.

The poll showed that more than half of Republican primary voters are paying “a lot” of attention to the race.

Carson may be pulling ahead of Trump in the latest CBS/NYT poll, but a good portion of both candidates’ supporters remain unsure of their decision. Eighty percent of respondents who backed Carson in the poll stated that it was too early in the race to know for sure if they would eventually vote for him. Trump supporters were a bit more firm in their decision, with 55 percent saying they have made up their minds on the reality TV star.

But smoking increases your relative risk of lung cancer by 2,500 percent; eating two slices of bacon a day increases your relative risk for colorectal cancer by 18 percent. Given the frequency of colorectal cancer, that means your risk of getting colorectal cancer over your life goes from about 5 percent to 6 percent and, well, YBMMV. (Your bacon mileage may vary.)

It’s one vice I am glad I never have had. I briefly was a smoker but I gave it up. I stupidly thought maybe it would control my appetite urges. I ended up losing the weight a couple years later anyhow without smoking a single cigarette. I try now to have a balanced diet.

Still sounds like policy is in flux:

Washington (CNN)—The U.S. is considering increasing its attacks on ISIS through more ground action and airstrikes, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday.

Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the U.S. “won’t hold back” from supporting partners carrying out such attacks or from “conducting such missions directly, whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground.”

The White House, however, has yet to make a decision on the options for upping the campaign against ISIS, according to defense and administration sources. They said that further involvement on the ground was one of the possibilities being presented.

The worrysome trend to me is while individual gun owners have decreased, the amount of guns per capita itself has increased. That is to say, more guns are in fewer hands. And it’s fostered by the paranoia that the NRA and GOA sell their members about how they the members need tons of guns to keep them safe from tyranny and “bad guys.” Is crime a problem in many places, sure but the biggest gun hoarding I see exists in pats o the country where crime is a factor. I said it yesterday but I think a lot of gun owners think people like me are idiots because we may not know everything there is to guns but my retort is we also know alot more about the destructiveness of guns than they do.

Incensed that the price of sausage biscuits at Waffle House had increased by 50 cents, a Georgia man shattered the eatery’s door, according to cops who busted the diner Sunday morning.

Police say that Mitchell Feinberg, 39, became upset when, upon being presented his check, he discovered that the price of biscuits had been raised to $1.50.

Yes, but it’s also a big detriment, because a large portion of the GOP voting base actually is racist. A lot of those people won’t be able to hold their noses and vote for an African American just for the optics.

I was in Los Angeles to witness the Bradley Effect. In the polls, Mayor Bradley was winning. But in the polling booth, enough people decided not to vote for a black guy that he lost. Given how racist the GOP is, I would predict that Carson will underperform the polls substantially.

Ummm, the disruption was by the officer engaging in egregious conduct in dealing with a fellow student. Videotaping an event like this isn’t disruptive, except to the status quo of power/authority/treatment of students.

Oh wait. Now it makes perfect sense.

For any Lizards in the Portland, OR Metro area who may be contemplating heading out for pizza, here’s a review of a new place, Red Sauce Pizza:

It’s a small space, and they’re geared at servicing the neighborhood with some much-needed (sorry but Rocket was awful) quality to-go pies as much if not more so than for eat-in diners (though they’ll be serving beer soon).

But HOLY SHIT. It is so good. It completely exceeded expectations. Between three of us, my party sampled three types of pie: the vegetarian Fernandez (Mama Lil’s peppers, spinach, red onion, and goat cheese), the Jack Dekovich (with pepperoni and housemade chorizo), and the Parcel (salami and arugula) plus a large, lemony, and excellent Caesar salad that mixed the standard romaine with some much-welcome tender kale. We happily burned our mouths, impatient to try each excellent variety as it arrived. My husband downright blubbered to the server about how if anyone told him he’d be living down the street from pizza of this quality in Portland, Oregon after moving back here from NYC a decade ago, he’d never have believed it, etc etc.

I just heard about it. Let me know if it was discussed and in what thread today or overnight.

It sounds like Kasich has decided to go all out as there really is nothing to lose at this point. So, maybe tomorrows debate is going to be the big fight over Trump. It has got to happen sometime. Also, it sounds like Kasich also included Dr. Ben Crazy in his comments. Might as well build that bonfire there Johnny.

If the case gets thrown out for lack of personal and/or subject matter jurisdiction, Chuck may be able to refile in a proper venue. This round would likely serve to toll the statute of limitations. It would depend, mostly, on the venue in which he files (which the Court in this case will probably point out would have been the correct one). If the ruling is on the merits, then it doesn’t matter, a judgment will be entered against him and that will bar him from filing elsewhere.

PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said:

“It’s no surprise that someone who makes a living glorifying crime and violence is a cop-hater, too. The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls “murderers” aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies — they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem. New Yorkers need to send a message to this purveyor of degeneracy that he has no business coming to our city to peddle his slanderous “Cop Fiction.” It’s time for a boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s films.”

That’s really the answer here. The media is a business, and like any good business is exists to make money. Money can’t be made if you acknowledge that a significant portion of your viewers are out of their fucking gourds, so instead we get this joke of a situation where the media has to pretend that the GOP is a party with “serious” ideas and not an asylum where the patients are now running the show.

The Kasich thing happened today at an Ohio rally. Just found this…

Los Angeles Times - Ahead of debate, John Kasich indicates his rivals are crazy

“Do you know how crazy this election is? Let me tell you something, I’ve about had it with these people,” he told supporters at an Ohio rally Tuesday, according to a transcript provided by NBC News.

Kasich, who is viewed as a moderate in the crowded GOP presidential field, noted that retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson wants to end Medicaid and Medicare.

“You ever heard of anything so crazy as that, telling our, our people in this country who are seniors or about to be seniors that we’re gonna abolish Medicaid and Medicare?” Kasich said of Carson, who is leading in several recent polls in Iowa, the first nominating state of the 2016 election.

He then shifted his focus to Donald Trump, whose immigration proposal has galvanized his supporters but drawn scrutiny among immigrant-rights groups for, among other proposals, his plan to deport all of the 11 million or so people in the U.S. illegally.

“We got one guy who says we ought to take 10 or 11 million people and pick them up. … We’re gonna go into their homes, their apartments,” he said. “We’re gonna pick them up and we’re gonna take them to the border and scream at them to get out of our country. Well, that’s just crazy.”

Kasich has not been immune to controversial comments himself. While at a Southern California reception last month, while praising Latinos, he also talked about rewarding them but referred only to tipping hotel maids.

I have a friend from college who apparently went on to become a cop (hard to imagine that. He was a big, pear-shaped, clumsy oaf of a guy. Smart, though.), and he posted a couple ‘Blue Lives Matter’ things on FB, then tried the ‘poor us!’ approach when I dinged him on it.

So I told him that if cops want respect they need to not only stop covering for bad cops and trying to blame the victims of police brutality, they needed to be proactive and very public about not tolerating that kind of person.

He stopped posting Blue Lives Matter stuff, and surprisingly, didn’t defriend me.

Well, I think he’s making an already tough situation worse by bashing critics. Defend your guys if you must but don’t call ME anti-police because I have a problem iwth police misconduct. Sounds simple enough.

Since the base has a problem even with natural intelligence, this is likely to play really well.

I just had a visit from an ad sales person I’ve known for 16 years, and haven’t bought an ad from in 15 years. She had a medical thing she wanted to share (after asking me how I am) about her rotator cuff. Boring. But this morning I had a guy telling me about the shrapnel wound he got on his face in the Korean war. That one was good. The ending: ‘I got some skin off my heinie sewed onto my face!’

re: #413 Kryptik

I would have thought the video of the kid getting slammed and dragged around by the cop would be one of those universally reviled things.

The fact that all I’ve found is about a 50/50 split of who blames the cop and who blames the girl is enough to drain away whatever last bit of faith I have in humanity. God all, fuck this country. Fuck this country so fucking much.

I wonder what that ratio would be if the girl was White and the cop threw her around like that. Or, to really change the rate…a White girl and Black cop.

Colors matter you know. /

US troops in Syria with Putin’s goons there seems like a bad idea.

re: #413 Kryptik

Perception becomes reality. Till another reality slaps back. If one sees the video they see no reason to confront let alone assault the girl or arrest her. Then I see it reported she was asked to leave, at length and refused, the cop was there to remove her, physically if necessary. That does change things assuing that’s accurate. It was a terribly brutal approach, one that many police departments know well how to avoid. Rage monster had his way.

I just got an advance copy of a book done by a highly qualified guy about the Ferguson shooting. After a skim and a long chat with the author, the hard forensic science clues do not look good for Edit-Brown. the Michael Brown families side of the story. Or many of the early conclusions.

I’m reading it through, twice through as is my choice for reviewing content for the LGFReading list. Here is the back cover. Gotta say I feel some trepidation about the review.

Because you can’t start a war with Russia, the sanctions are already there, and a lack of a response would cause an internal crisis. Which is what Putin craves.

It’s not like the unidentified country doesn’t have its own troops exposed. No need to bomb the actual country.

When exactly was the October 30th deadline for Gawker to file responses set? I saw the document about a week ago but for some reason can’t find it now. I ask because I’m pretty sure it was set set during the last uncontested extension, which was one extension before Burns filed the 111 page monstrosity which was thrown out. By my count the bonus time was given to unfuck himself (which he didn’t even accomplish fully) ate up another week.

So part of Gawker’s extension may be strategy to run out the statute of limitations clock on any future refile. But they also genuinely have a claim to the time, especially since Burn’s crafted his entire response to the MTD based on his newly filed first amended complaint, instead of the original complaint like he was supposed to. For one thing they’ll want to address Burn’s contention that they are State Actors in a way that truly highlights for the Judge how sanctionably frivolous such an argument truly is. They will probably also address Burn’s conspicuous failure to mention 9th Circuit Rulings allowing California anti-SLAPP laws to apply in Federal Court. Gawker may urge the court to view this as a violation of professional ethics.

Point being their lawyers will spend the next two weeks crafting their responses to Burns’ motions in a way that uses errors like this to completely destroy Chuck. Their firm will also want to use the time to give every Associate in the building billable hours on the case, since the end is in sight and if the anti-SLAPP succeeds they will be able to recoup all costs. There’s literally no outcome possible now where Chuck comes out ahead.

From CCJ? They may be entitled to costs, but unless everyone at the firm bills at a rate of $0.000000001/hr Chucky won’t live long enough to pay what he will end up owing them.
