Trump Is Still Boasting About Meaningless Online Polls, Even After Proof the Polls Were Spammed

Con artist continues selling snake oil to gullible right wingers

As if we needed any more evidence that Donald Trump is running a massive con game on the American public, today he’s continuing to hype those bogus online polls that anyone can vote in — and Fox News is, of course, helping him run the scam.

The Daily Dot has found proof these polls were being deliberately manipulated by Trump’s “alt-right” disciples: 4chan and Reddit Manipulated Online Polls to Declare Trump the Debate Winner.

Donald Trump supporters artificially manipulated the results of online polls to create a false narrative that the Republican nominee won the first presidential debate on Monday night.

The efforts originated from users of the pro-Trump Reddit community r/The_Donald and 4chan message boards, which bombarded around 70 polls, including those launched by Time, Fortune, and CNBC.

It wasn’t hard to discover; they were posting their schemes and instructions on gaming the polls right out in public. The Daily Dot posted this screenshot showing the denizens of 4chan urging each other to use a web browser’s “incognito mode” to vote repeatedly for Trump.

And here’s a very interesting direct convergence between Trump’s boasting and the alt-right racists of 4chan:

UPDATE at 9/28/16 2:02:46 pm by Charles Johnson

And now we have a real scientific poll to report:

Fox News honchos telling the on-air talent to stop using online polls as proof of anything.

These clickbait polls aren’t proof of anything other than the ability of someone determined to spam the poll with meaningless “votes” so someone like Trump can tout them and undermine the legitimacy of actual polls conducted under more controlled circumstances - the polling done by PPP, Monmouth, Zogby, Rasmussen, AP, IPSOS, etc., which you can debate their leanings, but all do carry out polling based on criteria and calls to those they’ve randomly selected.

Online polls are self selecting, and Trump’s decided that these are all the proof he needs. Fox talking heads obliged his nonsense too, even though they aren’t worth the pixels.

I’m honestly fine with him doing this since it suggests to me that he’ll act the same way at future debates. People know who won the debate on Monday and it wasn’t Trump.

But what truly made the set piece work was Trump’s response, which Clinton could not have scripted better if she tried. Unlike the previous allegations, he did not deny them, but instead burst out — three times! — “Where did you find this?” I have seen villains in Disney movies presented with damning evidence react this way, but I have never seen an actual human being do it, until now.

So there was discussion earlier about how people were glad their kids didn’t have to have discussions about what to do in the case of a nuclear bomb.

Which is good, I’m glad.

I look forward to when we don’t have to have discussions about how to respond to school shootings either.

republicans in denial

If you’re a Republican who has been clinging to the wan hope that Donald Trump might somehow, in his eighth decade on Earth, develop into a plausibly competent president of the United States, the first debate should have been your moment to abandon ship. Trump displayed the factual command of a small child, the emotional stability of a hormonal teen, and the stamina of an old man, staggering and losing the thread as the 90 minutes wore on.”

Instead, Republicans — without a single exception I have seen — have responded very differently. They have treated their candidate’s glaring unsuitability for high office as, at worst, a handful of discrete errors that in no way reflect on his character, and at best, the dastardly unfairness of the liberal media.

“Con artist continues selling snake oil to gullible right wingers”

Y’know, honestly I think this is a byproduct of Trump’s need to sell the narrative to himself. He can’t accept that he lost, despite mounting evidence in the scientific polls and new election poll shifting. I’m sure his campaign’s internal polls also told him he lost decisively, but the more he’s told this the more he tries to reassure himself psychologically.

The good news is this helps feed into the real problem, his reluctance to prepare. There’s an article in the NYT that quotes a bunch of his advisors and staff members off the record, the gist being they have tentative plans to do much more prep for the next debate but nobody in his camp seems all that confident that Trump can be convinced to take things seriously.

The Times does a good job of conveying the frustration without getting catty about it. the part about Trump having no attention span for actual practice and Ailes filling in the time telling war stories and dealing with being fired for decades of systemic sexual harrassment is especially entertaining.

I believe Trump is not only a master of deception and distraction, as any good con man must be, but also a master of SELF-deception. I think he really does want to hold onto the belief that he didn’t do that badly. His ego won’t let him accept that he lost, so he blames the mic, blames Lester Holt, claims he was holding back, etc while still claiming he won.

Obama also didn’t take his first debate seriously in 2012. But he knew when it was done that he’d fucked up, he apologized to his aides and supporters, and he went to work.

Here’s the difference between Obama’s first debate in 2012 and Trump in 2016 - one of them is a grown up.

I don’t have enough experience with con men to know if self-deception is de riggeur within the vocation or not, but my gut suspects it definitely helps. Another way of looking at it is it’s probably hard to maintain a functioning conscience without the feedback mechanism that self awareness provides.

From Chelsea on Trump’s threats to bring up Bill’s cheating (Daily Kos link):

Well, my reaction to that is just what my reaction has been kind of every time Trump has gone after my mom or my family, which is that it’s a distraction from his inability to talk about what’s actually at stake in this election and to offer concrete, comprehensive proposals about the economy, or our public school system, or debt-free college, or keeping our country safe and Americans safe here at home and around the world.

And candidly, I don’t remember a time in my life when my parents and my family weren’t being attacked, and so it just sort of seems to be in that tradition, unfortunately. And what I find most troubling by far are Trump’s — and we talked about this when you interviewed me the night before the Iowa caucus — are Trump’s continued, relentless attacks on whole swaths of our country and even our global community: women, Muslims, Americans with disabilities, a Gold Star family. I mean, that, to me, is far more troubling than whatever his most recent screed against my mom or my family [is].

He was figuring on getting around 20 percent of the primary vote and boosting the grand through the free publicity. Then he got caught up in the rollercoaster ride and is now terribly out of his depth. That is clear to any objective observer, especially the handful of sane folks left in the GOP.

I don’t have enough experience with con men to know if self-deception is de riggeur within the vocation or not, but my gut suspects it definitely helps. Another way of looking at it is it’s probably hard to maintain a functioning conscience without the feedback mechanism that self awareness provides.

As I’ve said before, I was married to a malignant narcissist for a couple of years. They cannot abide losing or being wrong—ever, even for small things,1—it’s always someone else’s fault and usually ascribed to the other party’s bad character and/or own narcissism. Any criticisms or disagreements from family, friends, etc. are seen as are seen as treacherous disloyalty because they’re perceived as attempts to mortally injure.

Part of me feels a little bit sorry for them because the world has to be a frightening place filled with potential enemies that need to be constantly defended against. That pity usually evaporates pretty quickly though as they’re so obnoxious & overbearing.

1. Something as small as a missed (or late) phone call can trigger it. If someone said they’d call my ex at 2:00pm and didn’t do it, then by 2:15-2:30pm, he’d be pacing and starting to complain that the other person didn’t think his time was important. By 3:00pm the other person would be the devil incarnate, with no redeeming qualities. Everything is personal with them. Everything.

Much more basically, the Trump brand is about a kind of showy luxuriousness that’s supposed to communicate that Trump is doing people a favor by bestowing them with “good” things that he’s selected with his savvy and competence. It’s just a variation of what all branded merchandise does—look at, say, Martha Stewart—but the Trump brand is all about an especially precarious sense of Bourdieu-esque distinction and quality that’s tied with the image of Trump as rogue billionaire.

Donald Trump, getting constant exposure, is no longer mysterious, nor able to fully manage his impressions. He isn’t classy anymore; he’s not even keeping up appearances as an 80s-style business shark. He looks bad, sounds ugly, and he’s not even pulling off a minimum level of poise. No, he’s saying Cheeto Jesus was defending his father. Naturally, that’s a lie.

“She knew that he would take the debate [sic] and defend his father. Why? Because he has character and she doesn’t. She’s a lowlife with no character, she has no character whatsoever.”

Trump did not in fact “defend his father,” who wasn’t even the subject of the remark, but instead falsely claimed that he had only received a “very small loan.”

The Trumpenspawn aren’t going to reflect on the fact that they, too, are fucking up their brand by participating in this political mess…but then again, they’re not exactly impressive in an of themselves. Their reputations are all borrowed light from Dad’s forty-year-old mythos.

Looking at this strictly from an advertising perspective: the Trump brand is fucked when Donald Trump dies. It’s his “story” and his constant bullshitting that sells the name. The kids have all failed to establish themselves as “Trumps” to match their dad, though I’d argue that there’s a conscious attempt to build up his daughter as successor figure for selling the brand—though not very well, since Donald himself can’t quite manage to present his daughter as something other than a configuration of body parts. And the sons are basically fucking charmless and clueless in a way that screams “useless scion of dynasty.” But even Ivanka isn’t really succeeding as a charismatic flim-flammer, which is what’s necessary to keep selling the idea that the name Trump is added value.

I’m not committed to it, but I could argue that this political foray is a gamble being made precisely because the Trump brand is, long term, fucked. Donald, raging political demagogue, can create a new brand with a smaller but dedicated consumption audience, and condense money from the larger cloud of believers that the populist right and the religious right have been farming for years. It’s a good business model…look at the breadth and depth of the fuckwit herding industry, from Fox News to guys who sell tapes at churches.

Dual explosions rocked the east German city of Dresden late on Monday, police told the press. The two small bombs detonated in front of a mosque and a convention center, though it appeared no one was injured in the attacks.

The first blast occurred at 9:53 pm local time, outside a mosque on Hühndorfer Strasse in the eastern neighborhood of Cotta. An imam was inside the building at the time, along with his wife and two children. About half an hour later, a second explosion was head outside the International Congress Center, forcing police to evacuate the nearby Martim Hotel. […]

Here’s odd news from Capitol Hill:

Senate, House Override Obama’s Veto of 9/11 Bill

Odd because it is apparently, the first (and so far only) veto override of President Obama’s term in office. The Senate vote was notably lopsided: 97- 1 (The “1” was Harry Reid).

Personally, I think the bill is a ridiculous waste of time, but then, I suppose there’s no downside to Saudi-bashing in Washington….

Well, Harry Reid is retiring when his term is up, so he doesn’t have anything to worry about. I wonder how long it’ll be before other countries start passing similar bills and suing the U.S. for “collateral damage” and such.

Jocularity aside, the viability of financial models based around “keep people constantly afraid and gullible” is fucking terrifying. It has always been an industry, but the speed of information flow has made it much more worrisome. What is so, so fucked up is that all over the world we can see the acceleration of communication and ease of idea flow result in the weaponization of gullibility.

I haven’t read the bill, but what does it actually allow them to do? Sue in a US court? If that is the case, then it seems mostly symbolic since Saudi Arabia is a sovereign nation and I can’t see how it would be bound by any ruling a US judge made. I don’t think a judge would have the authority to force the US government to place any sort of sanctions on them.

A seriously ill-advised piece of legislation. It seems good on the surface, but in reality it opens up the United States to lawsuits from other countries just as much as it allows US citizens to sue other countries. That’s why Obama vetoed it. This is a bad law and it’s going to backfire on us.

Yeah, I assumed President Obama wouldn’t veto it without good reason. I tried to slog through all the legal mumbo-jumbo, but my eyes quickly glazed over. This part form page 5 jumped out at me though—I don’t know how often the U.S. Code gets amended, but I’m guessing not often:
