St. Paul and the Broken Bones formed in 2012 in Birmingham, Alabama. The six-piece gospel-soul band headlined 2016’s Haldern Pop Festival, where we met them in the fields some hours before their gig. This is from the new Album “Sea of Noise”, a song called “All I Ever Wonder”.

In fiscal year 2016, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky received a little over 8,000 donations total. In comparison, 11,600 donations have been made since Election Day and nearly half of those — more than 5,600 — were in Pence’s name.

The organization has seen donations from all over the country. A woman from Seattle expressed why she donated to Indiana and Kentucky in a letter to Planned Parenthood.

Perhaps. Republicans have played the long game for decades, so I find it completely believable that Reagan and Nixon, if brought forward in time, would approve of Trump’s fascism that they could’t get away with in their own eras.

GOP gently reprimands Trump but signals no action

WASHINGTON

While Americans protested nationwide, Republicans stepped carefully against President Donald Trump, criticizing his immigration order but stopping far short of signaling legislative action that might reverse it.

Just seven GOP senators and a handful of House Republicans tried to cool the furor that erupted after Trump’s order led to detentions of even legal residents trying to enter the country from seven predominantly Muslim countries on Saturday, and their words were cautious and gentle.

Don’t want to make the big baby mad.

Keystone Gestapo

Literally the only thing protecting us from these fascists is they don’t know what they are doing. The US Government is a big organisation to try to gain control of.

That said, they will learn how, and as they do, they will become more dangerous.

The feckless GOP will do nothing. The Dems don’t have enough power to do anything more than protest loudly in the House and Senate.

I’m really thinking that the only solution is to continue to feed Donald Trump’s (and his staffers) paranoia that everyone is out to get them within their own administration.

It is not illegal to suggest that Steve Bannon is the power behind the throne and Donald Trump is merely a puppet they will discard when they no longer have use for him.

(At least as long as it is still legal to hold opinions about the government.)

For the second time in a week, a major US airline is grounded due to “automation issues”.

We don’t have the industry’s 2016 numbers yet, but in 2015 they recorded a record profit of $25.6 billion. Considering the continued moderate fuel prices and ever increasing fees, the 2016 number will be as high or higher.

Maybe shift some of that money from executive lounges to “automation issues”?

From the previous thread:

re: #601 Colère Tueur de Lapin - merde, nous allons mour

As a Fedeal employee, I swore to uphold the constitution and to do that I am required to understand what it says; especially within the context of my job. I do not accept a response of “not my job to understand the document I swore to uphold.”

They can read. The people enforcing this unlawful detention know exactly what they are doing.

I knew and understood at least in a basic sense the Constitution since elementary school. Civics is alas a class rarely taught today. That was by design (liberal educators according to conservatives).

Because of the general lack-of-understanding of what the Constitution says or means, you get the folk who constantly harp that foreigners are not protected by the Bill of Rights, &c.

A lack-of-understanding of the basic law underpinning the nation is necessary to be able to roll over the laws and rights of the people without much pushback.

The Women’s March and today’s protests show there are plenty of people that do understand the Constitution, and conservative efforts to delegitimse the protests so far are largely failing and dividing the establishment GOP.

The trick is to both continue the outrage (and there should be outrage, not the fake outrage of the teabaggers) and channel it into people running for office and turning out to vote, canvassing and volunteering for campaigns, donating money if you have it, or just talk to people you know. Even the smallest bit of activism can advance a cause - you never know what might become a rally point.

Case in point, the sign that said “First they came for the Muslims, and I said not this time motherfuckers.”

I just got back from the store to by a bottle of rye. I engaged the store owner briefly over the protests today and why they were necessary. His support for Trump during the campaign has rapidly eroded to the point where he is no longer a supporter. While he is not a liberal by any stretch of the imagination, he is not behind these actions. They are a bridge too far for him.

My wife is on a Polish chat right night now. Poles there are noting that the odd speech patterns from Donald Trump and weird sentence construction can be explained by an inability to read easily. A better explanation some are arguing is the speeches are translated using Google Translate from Russian (hence the odd sentences).

I was wondering how PutinCo’s plans are coming along. When do they go for the rest of Ukraine? Hungary? The Balkans? Does it take time to set up fake “security incidents” and casus belli, or are they confident enough to roll right in there with middle fingers up and dicks out, knowing the unPresident won’t respond - say, next week?

Gotta pay bills this week, including health insurance which I think is going to be “Obamacare” and I’ve got a $900+ tax liability on my car to pay, but I may scrape something the ACLU’s way. I said a similar thing earlier. Put someone more polished and methodical like Ted Cruz in Trump’s position, and it would be infinitely worse.

Our only saving grace is that these fuckers seem to not have any filter or want to learn how to be more methodical in their destruction of the government. They wanted to do everything all at once because Bannon and Trump both have the mentality of an undisciplined first grader.

I’m feeling like I did with the Women’s March: hope.

I’m hoping that the response to Trumpism is a massive grass roots upswell of activists and candidates running for local/state/national office, school boards, etc. The Birchers and theocrats have been working on this stuff for more than 25 years. I hope it doesn’t take the rest of us that long to get it back.

I want to push back against something here. When some of us bring up the fact that Trump and Co’s actions are against the law, people will inevitably go “Not if he ignores it” or some such. Please stop. We do not want to even come close to normalizing the idea that he can ignore them. He thinks he can ignore them, and he may stretch some of our ideals and institutions pretty far, but everything he does needs to be called illegal and end it with that.

Here’s how completely fucked up things are just 10 days into Trump’s regime:

Trump gutting the NSC and replacing the Chairman of the JCS with Bannon is not even rating as a news story.

For all those idiot GOPers who claim that they’re national security types, you’ve replaced the top military commander in the United States armed forces with a political hack whose experience is propaganda. That’s beyond shocking.

This is all about who’s giving Trump info and access to information. Bannon and the cabal of cronies are controlling what Trump sees and does. This is highly irregular, to say the least.

Then you get Fox News reporting that the White House approves of Trump’s decisions.

Ummm… unless Trump isn’t president, how does that even make sense. The White House is all answerable to… the president, who is Trump. This is saying that Trump approves of Trump. It makes no sense unless someone isn’t making the calls.

Well, even if he ignores it, his actions are still against the law. The law-and-order types are just rationalising with pretzel logic why “their guy” can break the law but no one else can.

Besides, President Nixon took the same attitude. It brought him down pretty quickly after Watergate was exposed.

The pressure needs to stay on and continue to mount that what he is doing is both against the law and un-American. The GOP can’t ignore it forever, particularly when their donors start bailing on them.

Most of the country won’t buy it.

One of the things that protesters are going to need to do is make sure there are plenty of cameras running. Record everything. One of the things that made the marches in the 50s effective is cameras finally started showing what was happening in the south.

I don’t think bonds will be safe when they get around to the national debt.

Wait till Trump reveals his plan to eliminate the National Debt! Fist he knocks off three zeroes from the total reducing it to 19 billion and he eliminates it with the budget for the next year. And those Savings Bonds or T-Bills you have???—well Trump will redeem those at the rate of one cent per $10,000 value…

It continues. The Democrats have two bills going up, one to undo the EO, and the other to put the JCS and DNI back on the NSC. The Democrats should also hold Trump in contempt for not clearing Bannon for the NSC.

Edit: And for ignoring the judiciary. TrumpCo knows the judges ruling exists. If they are in charge of DHS, they can tell them to obey.

I’ve been thinking about that. The Whigs dissolved in part because the party had two components, light Democrats and Abolitionists. So both groups had a place to go when the Republican party came about. If Republicans like Bartlett were to try to split off, there really isn’t any place for the crazies to go but to the new party.

A lot of whackjobs who bought cold coins as an “investment” are going to be pissed when they realize they’re going to lose ~50% of what they paid because they bought collector coins instead of pure gold

It’s more complicated than that.

Bullion coins (American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Chinese Panda, etc.) are good for investment, *if* you buy them from a reputable dealer at a reasonable small markup over the daily spot price. If gold’s at $1500 and you pay more than $1600 for a one-ounce bullion coin or more than $175-180 for a 1/10-ounce coin, you’re getting hosed. (Guess how much of a premium Glenn Beck’s talk radio suckers probably paid?)

Some collector coins actually can now be included in 401(k) and other investment vehicles. If purchased from a reputable dealer at a reasonable price, they can be good investments, too. A generic St. Gaudens or Liberty $20 gold coin will have its value fluctuate almost directly with the spot price of gold. If you really know what you’re doing and have the money to knowledgeably purchase rarer dates or conditions, you can make even better money in rare coins, but knowledge is power here, and most of us don’t have it.

If you’re buying collector coins from some outfit you hear advertised on hate talk radio, you deserve to lose all the money you’re going to lose in the end.

One of the things that protesters are going to need to do is make sure there are plenty of cameras running. Record everything. One of the things that made the marches in the 50s effective is cameras finally started showing what was happening in the south.
