I thought the Right would be making more of a deal about the “Islamist refugee terrorist” behind the Colorado shootings.

It’s never the time.

It never will be the time unless we become better citizens and replace the pawns of the National Rifle (manufacturer’s) Association.

Simple as that.

I’m thinking it may be because there’s nothing (or very little) to make a deal about: usually once a mass-shooter gets identified, one division or another of the Troll Army gets busy taking every tweet, post, email or LTE right apart to try to “prove” some stupid point or other….

It’s Cabinet Rank.

There are a total of 26 members of the Cabinet, including the President, Vice-President, 15 department heads, and 9 other positions.

There are _many_ other positions requiring Senate Approval — more than 1,000.

Biden’s picks have gotten confirmed in about 60 days - OMB and Science Advisor are the only two slots that are unfilled at this point. Tanden withdrew and confirmation await Lander for Science Advisor.

Trump took more than 100 days, because he didn’t care to fill the positions and have the scrutiny of hearings, and that was with GOP in control.

Obama took about 100 days, because GOP obstructionists delayed his picks.

Sweet jeebus. This piece of investigative journalism is frightening. A lead smelter in Florida is busy poisoning workers, the local community, and everywhere else because of lax safety and emissions controls, and the company just shrugs it all off. This company has another smelting facility in Minnesota (Eagan), where they don’t have these issues:

Gopher leaders knew lower numbers were achievable. They had to look no further than their other plant in Eagan, Minn.

Tampa employees who traveled to Eagan for meetings or training sessions, were stunned by what they saw. The floors were so clean, they joked, you could eat off them.

From 2013 to 2014, the average air-lead reading in Tampa’s furnace department was six times higher than Eagan’s, according to data submitted to Minnesota regulators and other company records.

SUPPORT GREAT JOURNALISM
Please consider donating to help the Tampa Bay Times bring you more stories like this. Your support means a lot!

LEARN ABOUT DONATING
The highest air reading anywhere inside the Eagan factory was 2,537 micrograms of lead per cubic meter. That’s dozens of times above the federal limit but nowhere near Tampa’s highest reading. In Tampa, it was 78,729 — or more than 1,500 times the federal limit.

In June 2014, a Tampa employee was exposed to 172,655 micrograms of lead per cubic meter while working in the baghouse, where dust gets routed from other parts of the plant. The next year, an air monitor recorded a lead concentration surpassing 200,000.

Those readings were well above the level federal officials consider life-threatening.

Lax health rules/regs are a thing in places like Florida and Texas. The consequences are entirely predictable.

I don’t think any of us were trying to “both sides” things.
Neera Tanden’s failed nomination is just a symptom. The real problem is
- The Senate’s in practice much _greater_ power than the House of Representatives has led to a dictatorship of a minority. Not the mere ability of a minority to block bills to force consensus, but the ability to impose its will on the majority.
- Even when the Democrats have minimal control over the Senate, the Republicans have a veto through the filibuster. Let’s force the Republicans to stand in place during the entire filibuster without being allowed to go to the cloak room to piss in a bucket.
- Republicans are the epitome of hypocrisy. They complain orders of magnitude more often over others failings*, than the Democrats fight about Republican failings orders of magnitude greater
- The American Media tries to drum up ratings both-sidesing. This morning, when I listened to the BBC talk on gun control, they rightly said, the Democrats have proposed legislation for Universal Background Checks, and have always been blocked by the Democrats. No “Democrats and Republican’s” couldn’t work together crap.

*Donnie’s Covid-19 incompetent Covid-19 response over an entire year led to the equivalent of more than 100,000 Benghazi’s that was caused by a sudden unforeseen event over a couple of hours.
Democrats get caught in a mild bit of impropriety that was consensual (I’m talking about Cunningham), Republicans thrash them. Donald Trump, and Brett Kavanaugh have credible allegations of rape and sexual harassment, and they skate.

Fun fact, the Bible doesn’t actually SAY when the Sabbath is supposed to be. God rested on the seventh day but the Commandment just says “remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy”. No specific dates or times given. It’s about the importance of resting regularly and not burning yourself out.

Christians and Jews have decided that choosing a certain consistent day of week for the Sabbath usually works best but scripture does not require such.

Here’s another fun fact: For obvious reasons, Sundays are considered work days for churches and their staff and volunteers. For most of these people. they take Saturday as a day of rest.

“…The Founders were excited to start a new country called the United States, but there was one big problem: There were no states! There was Large Virginia and Long Connecticut and Doublewide Georgia and the Five-Headed Non-Contiguous Mass of Massachusetts, but none of them were states. This news was devastating to the Founders, and they sat down to try to figure out what to do.

You are sure that none of these are states?” Robert Morris said, for the third time.

“Yes,” James Madison said sadly.

“So we can’t be the United States.”

“No,” James Madison said, even more sadly. “Everyone knows that states contain certain immutable characteristics: an airport, a landfill, industrial manufacturing and a car dealership.”

“Oh, my God!” Patrick Henry screamed. “James Madison is possessed by a demon and is making incomprehensible sounds!”

“Please,” Benjamin Franklin said, “we know that demons are not real. I am sure that he has simply been overcome by galvanism!”

“No,” James Madison said, “I am just saying into the record things that we the Founders know are important for statehood so that later generations can cite them. Everyone knows about car dealerships and how you need one to be a state.”

Teukka  Mar 24, 2021 • 12:06:54pm

So this clip from a 1998 movie came to my attention. How little we have progressed since then. In some regards, we’ve regressed…

Youtube Video

“I had a great summation all worked out, full of some sharp lawyering, but I’m not going to read it. I’m here to apologize. I am young, and I am inexperienced. But you cannot hold Carl Lee Hailey responsible for my shortcomings. Do you see, in all this legal maneuvering, something has gotten lost. That something is the truth. Now, it is incumbent upon us lawyers not to just talk about the truth but to actually seek it, to find it, to live it. My teacher taught me that. Let’s take Dr. Bass, for example. I would have never knowingly put a convicted felon on the stand. I hope you can believe that. But what is the truth? That, that he’s a disgraced liar? What if I told you that the woman he was accused of raping was 17, he was 23, that she later became his wife, bore his child and is still married to the man today? Does that make his testimony more or less true? What is it in us that seeks the truth? Is it our minds, or is it our hearts?

I set out to prove a black man could receive a fair trial in the South, that we are all equal in the eyes of the law. That’s not the truth ‘cause the eyes of the law are human eyes, yours and mine, and until we can see each other as equals, justice is never going to be even-handed. It will remain nothing more than a reflection of our own prejudices. So until that day, we have a duty under God to seek the truth - not with our eyes, and not with our minds where fear and hate turn commonality into prejudice, but with our hearts - but we don’t know better.

I want to tell you a story. I’m going to ask you all to close your eyes while I tell you the story. I want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to yourselves. Go ahead. Close your eyes, please. This is a story about a little girl walking home from the grocery store one sunny afternoon. I want you to picture this little girl. Suddenly a truck races up. Two men jump out and grab her. They drag her into a nearby field and they tie her up and they rip her clothes from her body. Now they climb on. First one, then the other, raping her, shattering everything innocent and pure with a vicious thrust in a fog of drunken breath and sweat. And when they’re done, after they’ve killed her tiny womb, murdered any chance for her to bear children, to have life beyond her own, they decided to use her for target practice. They start throwin’ full beer cans at her. They throw them so hard that it tears the flesh all the way to her bones. Then they urinate on her. Now comes the hanging. They have a rope. They tie a noose. Imagine the noose going tight around her neck and with a sudden blinding jerk, she’s pulled into the air and her feet and legs go kicking. They don’t find the ground. The hanging branch isn’t strong enough. It snaps and she falls back to the earth. So they pick her up, throw her in the back of the truck and drive out to Foggy Creek Bridge. Pitch her over the edge. And she drops some thirty feet down to the creek bottom below. Can you see her?[Her raped, beaten, broken body soaked in their urine, soaked in their semen, soaked in her blood,] left to die. Can you see her? I want you to picture that little girl.

Now imagine she’s white.”

In the book, the lawyer didn’t make that argument.

It was a 75-year-old blue-haired white lady on the jury who used it in deliberations, persuading the rest of the panel. “Imagine if a couple of black guys did that to a blond-haired apple-cheeked white girl…”

There was Large Virginia and Long Connecticut and Doublewide Georgia and the Five-Headed Non-Contiguous Mass of Massachusetts, but none of them were states. This news was devastating to the Founders, and they sat down to try to figure out what to do.

The satirical Duffel Blog story quoted former SPLC President J. Richard Cohen as saying that “both the VFW and Legion were included since many of their members sympathize with radical, extreme-right-wing ideals such as freedom, safety and family values.”

That’s anti-SPLC propaganda more than it’s satire. They know damn well those are not the values that people consider hate.

From what I’ve been able to gather, this is the first time they’ve had a blockage of quite this magnitude. They had a ship (same ship) block the canal in 2017 and 2018, but each time, the tugs were able to back it out within hours with little trouble… except for the 2018 incident, which took out part of the road on the west side of the canal and ruined someone’s day (and car) when they drove into the hole.

re: #121 Punish Domestic Terrorists

Is there a fine for being a dumbass who blocks a canal for days?

It depends. To run the Suez Canal, as with any other canal or narrow water passage, you need to have a local pilot on board doing the navigating. Either the pilot was unable to control the massive vessel in the wind, or he lost his bearings (sounds like there was a sandstorm), or the ship’s master tried to overrule the pilot. The latter would be… very much not good.

It’s costing a lot of countries millions of dollars per hour. But ships this big don’t even have wheels. They’re completely automated. Whoever the canal pilot was who boarded the ship to guide it through probably feels like shit. If it was a software glitch that will be hard on some other company as well.

In the old days ships didn’t have hundreds and hundreds of ISO containers overburdening the vessels.

I wonder if somehow the canal authorities are going to have to bring in a crane and unload the ship enough until its draft is less.

Interestingly, shipping companies account for some amount of delays, usually due to having to steer around stormy weather or avoid troublesome areas due to pirates/wars. (Something I learned in my completely disproportional research into the topic.) They have another 1-2 days before things start getting REALLY problematic.
