Just got a new mousepad with a Hubble star field design, and my Magic Mouse tracks amazingly better than it did with its solid black predecessor. I thought it was me overshooting and suddenly jumping randomly all over the place, so that’s a relief.

Two more Houston-area residents have been accused of participating in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, bringing the total number of locals arrested to six.

Authorities say Christian Cortez and Benjamin Larocca, both of Seabrook, drove a rental car to Washington, D.C. to attend the march, and entered the Capitol building during the attack. The two men were identified using footage recorded throughout the day, according to court documents.

In one video, Cortez appears on Capitol grounds near a line of officers, alongside other pro-Trump extremists.

“Oath breakers! Oath breakers!,” he yells toward a line of officers, according to court documents.

In the past 20 years of my life, I’ve seen the GQP argue that photo IDs are required for everything from opening bank accounts to buying groceries as an excuse to push pointless Voter ID laws.

Yet when the nation is dealing with a pandemic of historic proportions and the crux of getting “back to normal” is getting everybody vaccinated in a quick and orderly fashion, it really does not surprise me that the same assholes are screaming that carrying around documentation of such is a bridge too far.

Well, the more realistic answer is that most of the things they feel shouldn’t require an ID/license are things that are “rights.” By contrast, they view voting as a “privilege” like driving a car, so you have to show you’re “responsible” in order to be allowed to exercise it.

All we need is to make Social Security cards into photo ID with an indication of citizenship/residence status and a lot of those issues are resolved

But they don’t apply their standards of privilege versus right to themselves.

Really, the only thing that remains consistent is that they ascribe themselves as having rights—unconditional, legal entitlements—while all other people have privileges—not just conditional, but with themselves as standard-setters and judges of compliance in a way that is extralegal.

They believe in caste.

That’s because, once you get past the “Party of Lincoln” horseshit, at their base they remain the party that believes the only “true” citizens of America are white people of European ancestry.

Your ancestors came over as slaves who worked the land, built many of the greatest buildings of this nation, worked for their freedom, and then spent decades doing everything in their power to show their worth to this nation including fighting and dying in foreign wars? Fuck you, you were just handed citizenship, back of the line!

How about the guys whose ancestry traces back to the first tribes who discovered this land centuries before European explorers arrived, tamed the wild beasts, built magnificent wonders across the land, and can claim to have a greater understanding of it than any white man? Fuck you, you lost, back of the line!

Well, what about those whose ancestors descended from the great empires of Central and South America, who made great discoveries of scientific and mathematical wonder, and whose power was such that even the Spaniards respected them? Fuck you, you’re just a bunch of “illegals,” back of the line!

But your ancestors were such fuck-ups back home that their choices were being exiled to the Americas or execution, leading to a long line of reprobates and fuck-ups that haven’t a single accomplishment to their names? Well, they were English, so you’re a citizen. Enjoy your freedoms, and remember, Vote Republican!

Why platforms must act on twelve leading online anti-vaxxers

Just twelve anti-vaxxers are responsible for almost two-thirds of anti-vaccine content circulating on social media platforms. This new analysis of content posted or shared to social media over 812,000 times between February and March uncovers how a tiny group of determined anti-vaxxers is responsible for a tidal wave of disinformation - and shows how platforms can fix it by enforcing their standards.

Chaser: Are Conspiracy Theories Harmless? [The Spanish Journal of Psychology via Cambridge Core]
Abstract:

Abstract. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the consequences of conspiracy theories and the COVID-19 pandemic raised this interest to another level. In this article, I will outline what we know about the consequences of conspiracy theories for individuals, groups, and society, arguing that they are certainly not harmless. In particular, research suggests that conspiracy theories are associated with political apathy, support for non-normative political action, climate denial, vaccine refusal, prejudice, crime, violence, disengagement in the workplace, and reluctance to adhere to COVID-19 recommendations. In this article, I will also discuss the challenges of dealing with the negative consequences of conspiracy theories, which present some opportunities for future research.

I’m feeling exceptionally stupid this morning as neither of these things makes one lick of sense to me.

Former Foundation Imaging/Netter Digital folks who emerged with original B5 CGI/Lightwave files, some of whom are now updating to 4K on YouTube, I need to get hold of you. It’s nothing bad, it’s actually positive, but I can’t explain why in this tweet. You know how to find me.

And…

Working on a new series. There is a thing called a pre-title that TV execs seem to like - Desperately shouting at you, pathetically imploring you to watch over vulgar music. It is the dumbest ‘idea’ in TV history and anyone who suggests otherwise is an artless pen-pusher.

re: #92 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

First item addresses, I believe, some of the work people have done to make replacement CGI for the original Babylon 5 shows, whose CGI was good for TV at the time, but compared to today is quite rudimentary.

The second item: Cox is referring to those short (usually under 30 seconds) clips which show at the very front of a TV episode, which hype the show in a style more reminiscent of the old carnival barkers.

94
Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Mar 30, 2021 • 5:09:43am

From this mornings Guardian email.

Ballot counting begins today in a landmark union drive at Amazon, the second largest U.S. employer and the world’s fourth most valuable company. The campaign is small in scale but—judging by the company’s fierce pushback—highly significant, as workers in Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama, facility decide on whether to form a union.

Amazon’s executives argue a union is unnecessary, citing the company’s $15.30 per hour entry wages and health insurance benefits. The workers behind the union push have dismissed the company talk, and have spoken out against grueling work shifts, relentless employee tracking, as well as safety concerns related to COVID-19.

Despite its anti-union stance, Amazon has room to be generous amid a coronavirus-fueled boom in sales: Profits were up 84 percent last year, and the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos, saw his personal wealth balloon grow by $72 billion in 2020.

Damn.

For those who want to watch PeacockTV but who don’t get no-extra-charge subscriptions ( I think Comcast cable and Cox cable customers get the “premium” subscription automatically):

Albertson’s/Safeway mega-corp’s Monopoly promotion is giving away coupons for 3 months of PeacockTV Premium. Now, I don’t find “Premium” to be that better than the free PeacockTV because there are still the same ads, but I guess “Premium” does open up some sports shows, full WWE programming, and live-sports, etc.

Anyway, I got an extra coupon for the 3-months ($15 value) if anyone wants it. Got to have one of those Albertsons/Safeway customer rewards accounts to get the PeacockTV code sent to you… but if it helps anyone here is a Monopoly ticket code to enter:

Bezos’ personal fortune is, like most fortunes, based on value of equities.

In reality, stock values (and even bond values) fluctuate. The value is in a sense virtual until actualized in a sale.

It’s a kind of polemic, to say that Bezos’ wealth went up $72B; it is thrown out there to make people upset.

In reality, if Bezos were to suddenly put up for sale all that Amazon stock, the stock price would plummet.

And all of a sudden all those billions of dollars are a much smaller pile of money.

Bezos is rich because customers, like me, find Amazon to be a better shopping experience than most online stores, and much more useful than many brick-and-mortar stores. Walmart can be cheaper for some items, but who wants to go to Walmart?

I’m all for workers being able to unionize if that is what they want. But that is independent of whether any guy is “worth” billions and billions of dollars.

From this mornings Guardian email.
Amazon’s executives argue a union is unnecessary, citing the company’s $15.30 per hour entry wages and health insurance benefits.
Damn.

Unions do more than fight for minimum wage and health ins.

Consider maintaining or improving all kinds of working conditions whether wage and benefit related or not.

Plus if it’s not necessary that doesn’t mean it still can’t help.
Unless you’re only worried about the costs and not their general welfare

Businesses collect and remit sales taxes.
It’s not an expense to them.

The problems come up when
- a business doesn’t “charge” it when others do..creating a probable unfair price advantage
- a business collects but does not remit. Ie stealing from the govt

Long have I moaned about the cost of money being different for the few at the top, compared to the masses.

On the whole, the richer you are the more likely you are able to borrow money at the lowest rates that lender can lend.

The entire concept cash flow is biased in the direction of those with more cash. It’s a kind of fundamental reality to a society, that those on the top of the heap are inherently better able to protect what they have, than those at the bottom of the heap.

Our society has these positive feedback loops that keep the status quo.

The rs will come with like “it’ll stifle growth” or something.
Meanwhile Wall street is predicting 6-8% growth this year

- raise the corporate rate from 21% to 28%.
- a global minimum tax on profits from foreign subsidiaries
-Tax capital gains as regular income for the wealthy
- and tax unrealized capital gains at death
- Return the top individual rate for those making more than $400,000 to the pre-Trump rate of 39.6%

That’s not true. The Supreme Court reversed a longstanding case Quill, which handles nexus (your connection to a state for tax purposes), and Wayfair is now law of the land.

Before the Wayfair case, Amazon would be required to collect sales tax on products if they had a distribution facility in the state or had some kind of agreement with the state to collect/remit tax.

Now, they can collect/remit tax to all states that have a sales tax because Wayfair set up minimum thresholds that a state can require (200 transactions in a state, $200k in sales, etc.)

The sales tax issue is separate and distinct from the unionization discussion.

And those workers should unionize. Working conditions in Amazon facilities has been routinely found to be horrible. No bathroom breaks, people getting sick from high temps, and all kinds of injuries trying to keep up with the nonstop flow of orders.

Florida undercounted their covid19 deaths by nearly 5000. That means that the per capita death toll goes from 1549 per million to 1700 per million. It means that instead of 33270 deaths, you’re looking at 38270 deaths.

That’s because Gov. DeSantis repeatedly buried the details and stats to the deaths on his watch.

Biden to Republicans: We’ll save the economy with or without you, so you might as well help

President Joe Biden isn’t slowing down on his promise of big, bold action to restore the nation’s public and economic health. Having successfully pushed his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan through Congress, he’s taking the momentum and popular will to keep the ball rolling with what promises to be more than $3 trillion in broadly interpreted infrastructure—physical things like roads and bridges and rail—and social infrastructure.

He’s counting on the good will of the people garnered with those $1,400 survival checks as well as plain old competent and effective governance to convince Democrats to stick with him. So far, it seems to be working.

Take Rep. Tim Ryan, a Democrat in a swing House district in Ohio who is considering a statewide run for the Senate seat Republican Rob Portman is retiring from. When HuffPost asked what Democrats should do next, he didn’t hesitate: “Double down on working families.” He said he’s hearing a “huge sigh of collective relief” from his constituents as a result of the relief bill, and is pushing for more. “I think people are starting to get confidence in the government again,” Ryan said. “You can already feel a lot of voters saying, ‘I didn’t vote for Biden, but I appreciate what he’s doing.’ And if we keep going down this road, a lot of these people are going to approve of it.”

The whole thing is worth reading.

Florida’s not undercounting them, every other state is overcounting them because everyone knows you can’t die from COVID-19, you die from getting shot and then they count it as COVID-19 to get $$$.

Ok. I just spent an hour looking for my keys. It was driving me crazy. Couldn’t find them anywhere. Not dropped on car floorboard, not dropped from car to house in driveway or steps, not where I usually set them, no where to be found. I tried to think what I did when I first came in the house last night. After much searching and trying to remember I walked by the cat who was sleeping on her regular place on the top tier of her cat condo. As I was petting her I look down at the second tier and there are my keys in the corner of that tier. I must have come in and was playing with her like I do and set them down and forgot about them. Oh well.

“Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this… A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

“In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the UK went on strike more than sixty years ago to get “washing up” time. That resulted in them getting paid for the 15 minutes at the end of each shift when they were showering the muck and coal dust from their bodies after work. Before this happened they were off the clock because their cleanliness was nothing to do with their employers. Getting baths at the the pit-head in the first place had been another struggle requiring a strong union and the threat of industrial action.

It is amazing the sort of stuff that the fucks in management come up with.

A girl in high school who was working at the MacDonalds tells me that she was interviewed by some fellow from company headquarters. He asked her if she ever occasionally ate any of the fries she was salting. She admitted doing so.

She says that her next paycheck was docked $1.45 to cover the french fries that she ate. What gets me is that MacD was paying a guy to go around the country nickle-and-diming high school kids to cover the cost of his salary.

Wage Theft by employers is a much, much bigger problem than “time theft” by employees.

The first time a place I worked at as a computer contractor (paid salary) started carping about work time; e.g. people leaving early, etc. etc.

There was an almost immediate informal agreement among all the contractors, who worked for more than one firm. “If you want to watch clocks, so can we.” We started at 8am and we quit at 5pm. If we got to work a bit early we did other idle stuff, read the paper, etc. until 8am. At 5pm we closed up what we were doing regardless of current progress or whether a few extra minutes would get something finished.

It was pretty much, “If you don’t trust us, we will do the job and nothing extra.” and we took it sort of personally. And it was amazing what sort of fuss it took in corporate culture to get anything like flex time or limited comp time even considered. People had lives outside of work and a little bending to help them deal with it was generally appreciated and rewarded with loyalty.

The Germans have this root vegetable, Schwarzwurzel, or “salsify” in English.

I actually don’t mind eating it, especially in a nice cream sauce, but making it is awful: it has a sticky black coating, you have to peel it wearing rubber gloves and cannot let it fall on anything but the newspaper or whatever you place under it so it does not adhere to the counter top or floor.

re: #227 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

This is going to be spun as evil Corporate Interests vs True Patriots.

I seem to recall that Dominion Systems were - at least at one point - owned by a GOP supporter.

That comment rings a few bells for me. I can’t seem to shake the early thoughts I had about the Republican vs Democratic Party.

Republican: is the party of the employers.
Democratic: is the party of the employees.

Amazing story about how the Trump Crime Family is taking advantage of the blind faith the evangelicals have inculcated in their flocks to basically steal $250MM+ from the delusional.

re: #159 Eventual Carrion

Oh well.

I did that the other day. Was getting ready to take the dog for a walk. I checked everywhere, under the seats in the car down by the side of the console, all my recently used jacket and pants pockets, the kitchen table, counter, inside and on top of the fridge, over by the washing machine, both bathrooms, bedroom, office, basement.

Finally found them…in that front pocket of my hoodie that I never put anything in, I had apparently already transferred them from my jacket pocket and still can’t remember doing it. So I was basically carrying them around with my while searching for them.
