“Our Sanctity Has Been Violated”
An early report on the fighting in Kufa, Iraq, describes the weapons and ammunition found in a mosque, with the usual skeptical AP tone: Fighting Continues in Kufa; Karbala Quiet.
U.S. forces fought militiamen near Kufa’s Sahla mosque and an Iraqi counterterrorism force then entered and “cleared” it, the military said in a statement. Soldiers seized a machine gun, two mortar tubes and over 200 mortar rounds as well as rocket-propelled grenade launchers and rounds, it said.
Radhi Mohammed, a mosque employee, said American troops smashed the door with an armored vehicle and killed people inside. An Associated Press photographer saw bloodstains on the floor that indicated someone had been dragged for at least 10 yards. There was blood in the bathrooms
Another report filed an hour or two later by al-Reuters emphasizes the US role in “storming the mosque,” loses the description of the weapons, and adds an Arab-on-the-street interview stressing the humiliation of having their weapons depot raided: U.S.-Led Force Storms Mosque in Attack on Iraq Militia.
“I feel humiliated,” said Ali Wasi. “Our sanctity has been violated. These houses of prayer are the most valuable things we own, for Shi’ites. I will resist them until the last drop of blood in my body,” he said, speaking in the mosque’s courtyard.
But the more important news, glossed over in every report of these incidents, is that the mujahideen are being smashed by coalition forces.
