RoP Hates Love

Mon, Feb 11, 2008 at 1:24:52 pm PST

The infidel holiday that fills the Islamic world with dread is upon us once again: Kuwait Hardliners Take Aim at Valentine’s Day.

KUWAIT CITY — Valentine’s Day is just three days away, but one Muslim politician is heading up a committee to make sure it goes completely ignored.

Kuwaiti MP Waleed Al-Tabtabae, head of the National Assembly’s Committee Monitoring Negative Alien Practices, will chair his group Wednesday to discuss ways to repress all public displays recognizing the international day of love. “We want to discuss measures that should be taken by these ministries to prevent such alien events from impacting Kuwaiti society and spreading corruption among the Kuwaiti youth,” Al-Tabtabae told reporters Monday. ...

Saudi Arabia, which had strongly condemned public Valentine’s Day celebrations, has eased its ban, allowing the sale of cards and candy, but still prohibiting public exhibitions of affection.

The Saudis have “eased the ban?” Well, somebody forgot to tell the mutaween: No red roses for Saudi sweethearts on Valentines Day.

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia’s religious police have banned red roses ahead of Valentine’s Day, forcing couples in the conservative Muslim nation to think of new ways to show their love.

The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has ordered florists and gift shop owners in the capital Riyadh to remove any items coloured scarlet, which is widely seen as symbolising love, newspapers said.

St. Valentines Day is a Christian holiday in memory of this Saint. I don't blame Islamic countries from not wanting it practiced in their Country.

Now, beating people for celebrating it is a bit harsh!

In business like restaurants and flower shops business is curtailed by weird limitations on St. Valentine's Day.
That's what's weird.
Most governments simply take a piece of the pie and call it good.
Not islamic governments.
They can't allow anyone, muslim, dhimmi or infidel tourist, to have a nice meal for two or bouquet of roses that day.

I don't remember feeling a whole lot of "love" from reading the Quran and Hadiths. I don't believe Muslim culture has the same concept of "love" that Western Judeo-Christian culture has. Allah does not "love" his subjects in the way that the Christian God does, for instance.

The second part of my statement was that they shouldn't be beating people us and arresting them for it. (if you noticed)

But I would support them not wanting it in their country. Its a Christian holiday being practiced by Muslims.

Let us not forget how upset us non-Muslims get when N.Y celebrated Eid a whatever, or if the U.S. began teaching, and "tolerating" Ramadan becoming a widespread American holiday.

There is a difference here. The US government promoting an Eid celebration etc. is not the same as allowing private citizens to have a harmless celebration of Valentine day in the Umma

Judaism already has a holiday to celebrate LOVE. We don't need the Christian one too.

Jews don't have Saints...thus there is no need to celebrate a day commemorating a Christian Saint.

Which holiday are you referring to as a celebration of love? I can't even recall what Tu B'Av is supposed to commemorate; it doesn't appear on my Artscroll desk calendar, while Tu B'Shevat does.

I agree there is no purpose to adding a holiday to celebrate a Christian saint; I'm just trying to figure out how Valentine's Day, which is at the opposite end of the calendar from Tu B'Av, have become conflated.

:) she tells that to pretty much everyone who asks what we are doing or she is getting on that day. usually she gets strange looks or is told she is making excuses for an insensitive husband (I am anything but). It's just that the country she grew up in (USSR) never had anything like it, and she is convinced it is nothing more than a cheap excuse to sell candy, flowers, and jewelery. I tend to agree. I bring flowers because I feel like it, not because the calendar tells me to.

I don't buy the "It's a Christian Holiday" excuse for a second. There are almost no Christians left in these countries anyway, it's not like absent a ban there would be mass displays of Christianity breaking out all over. Instead, it's just a ban on the age-old horrors of men and women expressing their affection for each other in ways that don't involve 5th wives or stonings. The terrors unleashed by wave after wave of $3.95 Hallmark cards might suggest women and men are romantic equals, or even that (gasp) women could exercise choice and pick men to be their Valentines, rather than being forced to marry a 65 year old man because the village elders said so. The answer is to ban the whole thing and grind your face into the ground even harder five times a day.
