Village Voice Savages Righty Blogs

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 8:23:18 am PDT

Here’s an indicator that the far left is concerned about the influence of “right-wing” blogs on this election, a risible hit piece in the Village Voice by Roy Edroso that reads like a Rosie O’Donnell rant: The Official Village Voice Election-Season Guide to the Right-Wing Blogosphere by Roy Edroso.

LGF gets a “stupid/evil” ratio of 40/60. If I were to rate Edroso, he’d tip the scale toward stupid; his little “stupid/evil” conceit is one of the dumbest excuses for a politically motivated character assassination piece I’ve ever read. Notice in the section on LGF, he puts us down for the term “idiotarian”—in an article that’s entirely devoted to calling bloggers idiots.

CHARLES JOHNSON (Little Green Footballs; littlegreenfootballs.com)

ORIENTATION: Anti-Islamo-everything

TONE: Unrelenting

FUN FACT: Coined the terms idiotarian and anti-idiotarian for, respectively, people who don’t think like him and people who do.

CANDIDATE: None, but prone to close late and reliably anti-idiotarian (i.e., Republican)

STUPID/EVIL RATIO: 40/60

HISTORY: “fixed my flat from this morning and got out on the bike. riding for 15 minutes and pow! fss—fsss—fss—fsss. yes. another flat.” This kind of lower-case personal reminiscence, interspersed with media and tech reviews, were Johnson’s bailiwick at LGF until 9/11. A week later, considering a National Review denunciation of Islamic terrorists, he wrote: “I agree totally—something I never imagined I would say about an article in the National Review.” Quickly outstripped the Review in conservatism, denouncing the Johannesburg Earth Summit (“generated between 300 and 400 tons of garbage”), the “NEA’s pomo multiculti agenda,” and “the left-wing extremism that dominates U.S. college campuses.” But he’s really a single-issue voter whose bugbear is terrorism, and who will support any foreign adventure purporting to fight it. Was an early supporter of the invasion of Iraq (“Stability Is the Last Thing Iraq Needs”) and has his eye on Iran (“Iran’s Manhattan Project Still On Track”), and on America, too: was pleased by a 2004 poll that showed 44 percent of Americans believed the U.S. government should restrict the civil liberties of American Muslims (“that’s not going to make the moonbats among us feel very good”). Johnson was delighted by the results of the 2004 election (“Moonbats . . . packing your bags and heading to Canada to escape the evil Cowboy Chimp’s imperialistic regime”), but was dismayed by the returns in 2006, especially when Muslim Keith Ellison was elected to Congress (“They’ll be celebrating in Gaza tomorrow”).

MODUS OPERANDI: For this election cycle, Johnson has interrupted his traditional Muslim-watch more often than usual to run pieces critical of Obama (“Obama Fools Mississippi”) and Clinton (“I doubt the crying tactic will work very well with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad”). Fairly quiet on McCain, but insists that “I know who I want to vote against: the Hillary-Obama Appeasement Complex.”

WHAT TO EXPECT: More reverse jihad, a late McCain endorsement, then still more reverse jihad.

UPDATE at 4/16/08 8:47:30 am:

Since this article was published, we’ve received a grand total of ... count ’em ... 32 hits from people clicking the link at the Village Voice web site.

UPDATE at 4/16/08 9:01:01 am:

I even got my own Tom Tomorrow cartoon! The jagged yellow spikes must be caused by all of that evil.

There is no faction of the conservative base more persistently irritating than the millions of Americans who adore Ronald Reagan. Their insistence on lionizing the man is particularly galling... The Village Voice is a joke these days anyway.

They went to the edge of bankruptcy a couple years ago and were bought for pennies by a corporate chain of faux-alternative newspapers. Whatever street cred left over from the '60s they imagined they were coasting on has now evaporated. They're nothing but yet another corporate ad rag, but with a famous name.

Sad to watch.

The Village Voice is now a joke. Just a famous name, nothing more.

Iranian Regime Torches 7 Synagogues in Tehran

Seven ancient synagogues in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have been destroyed by local authorities.

The synagogues were in the Oudlajan suburb of Tehran, where many Iranian Jews used to live.

"These buildings, which were part of our cultural, artistic and architectural heritage were burnt to the ground," said Ahmad Mohit Tabatabaii, the director of the International Council of Museums’ (ICOM) office in Tehran.

"With the excuse of renovating this ancient quarter, they are erasing a part of our history," said Tabatabaii.

Judaism in Persia pre-dates Islam by 1000 years.

Just don't tell anyone- especially students.

Yeah, although I don't think the author's plan was to point out anything good that right blogs do. He rates all of them on a stupid/evil scale.

Speaking of the scale, we need to do something if our evil rating is a mere 60, while Instapundit is at a 95. C'mon lizards, work harder!

On the other hand, a person that can't produce something funny using Will ferrell and Darrell Hammond deserves to be unemployed...

Didn't Norman Mailer help found The Village Voice?

That was a jillion years ago.

I can't believe people still think that the current incarnation of the Village Voice has anything to do with the famous muckraking paper of the '60s.

Don't be fooled by the famous name!

It's a completely different paper now. All new staff, all new ethos. 100% corporatized. new owners. They hire desperate writers who "position themselves" as hipster leftists. For the corporate masters, it's just a way to try to get readership for the ads.

But even that strategy isn't really working.

You're in Jerusalem for Pesach? Kewl.

Last year I was in Russia. Weird place to spend Pesach, I know, but I had a great time, and there were huge crowds at the seder.

This year, it's just me, the old man and our daughter at home for the seder.

For all you Lizards:

If you watch (or have seen) the movie When Do We Eat?, that's my little niece in the flashback scene (the sad young girl).

Review from Amazon:

It's the world's fastest Passover Seder gone horribly awry. Ira (Michael Lerner) prides himself on running the fastest Seder in the west. This year his son (Ben Feldman) slips him a dose of ecstasy at the beginning of the evening in order to give him a new perspective. Mom (Lesley Ann Warren) brings a special friend to dinner and now the family is taking sides. By the end of the evening Ira has become a moder. By the end of the evening Ira has become a modern day Moses leading his family to the promised land of family forgiveness. But they are all so stubborn it would be easier to part the Red Sea.

Roy Edroso is unintentionally hilarious, but also creepy...(is there a ratio for that?) I also think that Edroso is actually paying a compliment to all those he's been so keenly following...imagine all the hours he's spent tracking these bloggers! (Does Edroso suffer from OC disorder? Is there some new form of mental illness which causes people to obsessively focus/follow/stalk others ?-- do the Edroso's secretly admire those they stalk, consumed with jealousy? It reminds me of the now-banned poster who is apparently going over every single post ever submitted to LGF and who studiously discusses each one (with himself) and is now up to 2003 (?) or the GoV obsessives...I think these people need to get a life...find something productive to do..or seek out professional help.).

What amuses me is that it's probably easier to join the Jihad than it is to get into the Army. By NY law enforcement's own numbers, no New Yorker is more than three miles from a terrorist cell at any given moment. Nip down to the nearest Queens corner store and start asking around - if you're really so committed to the fight against the Evil Neocon Right-Wing Rethuglican Agenda, you can probably hook up with one of those famous "internet-inspired Al Queda imitator cells" with just a little more effort than it would take to score some weed.

I would ask all the HuffDUKosianVoice types who are so very, very angry, to please make it easier on all of us and just join a fucking group already. Put your money where your mouth is, please.

Every large city has their own version of the Village Voice. In Los Angeles we have the LA Weekley. Articles that no one reads in the front. Ads for hookers in the back. And somewhere in between, ads for movies and concerts, which are the only reason that anyone bothers to pick it up.

The LA Weekly and the Village Voice are in fact two different branches of the same company.

Late to the thread.

Seems to me that the 32 hits demonstrates one thing clearly - VV readers suffer from a lack of intellectual curiosity.

Perhaps they just want their daily dosage of propaganda delivered on time.

Remember - this is the "open minded" crowd we are dealing with - so open minded that they don't have to bother checking out other viewpoints - they already understand them.

/Obama voters in a nutshell

522 CyanSnowHawk  Wed, Apr 16, 2008 9:40:22am

I used to read the VV online, as I liked the sex oriented columnists, especially Tristan Toarmino (she wrote an awesome column about the use of pthalates in 'jelly' type sex toys) and Rachel Kramer Bussel (Gotta love a woman that loves both cupcakes and erotic spanking). I've not read it since they dropped Rachel's column.

This guy Roy Edroso, however, seems to me to be the sort of person that refuses to pick up a weapon and stand a watch on the wall defending the very documents and institutions that allow him to speak so freely without fear of being imprisoned, tortured, or even killed for what he says. I even think that he might believe that he is at risk of that, given the BDS that rages at that rag. He also demonstrates a very superficial knowledge of LGF and Michelle Malkin, and I presume, the other blogs that he reviewed that I am less familiar with. He completely missed the whole Vlaams Balang kerfuffle and Charles prominent role in exposing the CBS/Rather memos.

I noticed that this article's sub-title is: "A confederacy of dunces."

Hmmm. "Confederacy."

noun
1. the southern states that seceded from the United States in 1861
2. a union of political organizations [syn: confederation]
3. a group of conspirators banded together to achieve some harmful or illegal purpose [syn: conspiracy]
4. a secret agreement between two or more people to perform an unlawful act [syn: conspiracy]

Supposedly NE liberal elitists (and west-coasters) tolerate southern liberals (even though they're stoopid and racist) because at least they vote with the democrats.

May as well insult southern people as long as he's insulting - normal folk.

by Ralph H. Nutter

LeMay had to convince bomber crews to fly straight and level after the initial point to get adequate accuracy, despite the flak around them. Nutter did the research, LeMay supported him, and, by flying with the crews, got their support.

When they were still setting up on a Pacific island with limited water, LeMay had all the enlisted men wash their mess kits first; the higher ranking officers later, and LeMay and his staff, last.

That is exactly what he should do; it is the classy thing to do. Just because Carter is a dirtbag doesn't mean that other former and current Presidents need to stoop to his level. He's a former President and the office deserves that respect once he passes.

Sometimes we respect the office, not the man. Think Winters comment to Sobel in Band of Brothers.

Actually W would ignore politics if this occurred. I watched the video of him welcoming the Clintons into the white house and the current President was the definition of character and class. He never goes into the gutter and this also has our lefty friends spitting and slobbering because as much as they hate him, he never provides that special moment that they can capture on video to be run and re-run from now until - well, forever.

True.

most physical domestic violence tends to be male to female.

most, from what I've seen, mental/emotional domestic abuse is female to male. Particularly through the base manipulation of "He doesn't do what I want him to, I'll cut off all sex."

Unfortunately, there is not gender equality when it comes to the impression of victim in domestic abuse.

There is a big movement now to "normalize" the word "c*nt." Now that it is re-staged everywhere, the **** part has become an audience participation thing -- everyone's supposed to join in the c*ntc*nt************ mantra.

Neo-punk bands often use some variation of "C*nt" in their names these days. And "c*nt" paraphernalia is become commonplace.

OT: Canadian Chief of Defence Staff Hillier announces his retirement...

Blatchford wrote a great bit on Hillier's retirement today,

By late afternoon, the politicians, some of whom cannot even aspire to dream of carrying the general's jockstrap, were saying what a good fellow he is,

Hiller is retiring on his own volition. He wasn't pushed. And there are some good generals available to fill his shoes.

For all that he did and all the change he presided over, Gen. Hillier's singular accomplishment, and the one that endears him to soldiers more than any other, is that he made it respectable again to be in the Canadian Forces.

Thank you for your service, General Hillier, for all you've done for Canada & Afghanistan.

Drive-by post re: "Tom Tomorrow"

Someone gave me a book of his cartoons back around 1993 or '94. Now, I was a self-described liberal back then, and even so, I thought it was utter tripe. "Startlingly unoriginal", I think was my comment at the time. As his nom de plume suggests, he basically adopts a warmed-over "look, I'm being the Eisenhower America version of 'futuristic', isn't that ironically hip?" routine.

One of the few cartoonists who makes Ted Rall look like a friggin' genius by comparison.

Zombie, that is the word that must not be spoken.

Growing up, a guy I knew would break up with girls by just uttering that word at them. Worked everytime, according to him.

That word is not mainstream material.

Your attitude is EXACTLY why they are promoting it. It's just about the last taboo word. The more horrified you act by their use of it, the more they'll use it. "Freaking out the squares" is their highest priority. They want to rub your face in it over and over until you are completely desensitized to anything, and all taboos are destroyed, and all morals are relative.

And the culture manipulators at the top laugh in triumph. All part of the plan, my friends, all part of the plan.

Prep for the revolution.

Thanks for the list! Why am I not surprised to see the OC Weekly on it? Doesn't matter, really. Whatever weekly it is: L.A., Poughkeepsie, OC, Mars, MuArae, etc., it's always the same. In each edition you will always find:

1. A Tom Tomorrow cartoon. (Sometimes TWO Tom Tomorrow cartoons!)

2. Scads of incomprehensible, unfunny, non-Tom Tomorrow cartoons, all drawn in the same, weird comics style, as if the "artists" (scare quotes deliberate, here) were all channeling R. Crumb.

3. Scads of sex ads: "Gay? Bi? Curious? An alien from MuArae? dial 1-800-HOT-SEX-NOW, have your credit card handy and meet hot guys/gals/trannies/goats/lonely Russian women! Sexy Space Aliens are just waiting to talk to YOU!" For some reason, said ads never change their photos; you'll see the same faces for decades on the "Large 'n Lovely" ad, or "Hot Surfer Guys!" (Kinda like the picture of Dorian Grey.)

4. A "Savage Love" column. ("Well, EX in Delaware, I think you ought to sleep with your goat, and furthermore, don't let any religious fundies tell you that it's wrong! I'd hold off on the crisco and barbed wire, however, as that could prove somewhat hazardous. . . ")

5. Endless columns about garage bands, which nobody has ever heard off, and, furthermore, nobody---except the readers of these weeklies---cares about. ("The Duck Puppets began their come back tour at Dave's big fat a******e Cantina, where they showed that they still have the same rock the establishment brio they displayed back in the early 1990's---blah, blah, blah.")

6. A letters column, which will always contain a least one furious letter concerning a column about a garage band: "You turds! The Duck Puppets suck!" or, "You turds! The Duck Puppets rock!"

And, here on the Left Coast, we have a further treat; the execrable "As a Mexican" column, wherein Latino activist Gus Arellano states just how much he hates the USA, and how bigoted us Gringos all are, while reviewing chi-chi bistros those in the know simply MUST try!

re: #732 zombie

Regarding your earlier comment about the the "C*nt" party photos in the Village Voice:

There is a big movement now to "normalize" the word "c*nt." It started with the Vagina Monologues (which is now one of the most popular plays produced in US high school drama departments), where Eve Ensler says the word "c*nt" about 500 times in a row. Now that it is re-staged everywhere, the **** part has become an audience participation thing -- everyone's supposed to join in the c*ntc*nt************ mantra.

Neo-punk bands often use some variation of "C*nt" in their names these days. And "c*nt" paraphernalia is become commonplace.

Just last week I saw a gaggle of 13-year-old girls walking down the street -- one was wearing a tube top with the word "C*NT" written across it in glitter.

Check this out:

The resonance of racism In a nation steeped in stereotypes, candidates' words can hit a nerve.
By David K. Shipler
April 16, 2008

Whether by calculation or coincidence, Hillary Clinton and Republicans who have attacked Barack Obama for elitism have struck a chord in a long-standing symphony of racial codes. It is a rebuke that gets magnified by historic beliefs about what blacks are and what they have no right to be.

Snip

But when his opponents branded him an elitist and an outsider, his race made it easier to drive a wedge between him and the white, rural voters he has courted. As an African American, he was supposedly looking down from a place he didn't belong and looking in from a distance he could not cross.

This could not happen as dramatically were it not for embedded racial attitudes. "Elitist" is another word for "arrogant," which is another word for "uppity," that old calumny applied to blacks who stood up for themselves.

Snip

So let me get this straight, the Obama can spew stereotypical hogwash like “typical white American” and his latest, “gun toting bible thumpers clinging to there religion” and if I disagree with it, I am the one who is labeled the “racist”, while the Obama gets a free pass, American double standards at its best.

Just last week I saw a gaggle of 13-year-old girls walking down the street -- one was wearing a tube top with the word "C*NT" written across it in glitter.

I wonder what kind of parents let their kids go out wearing that shirt.

The parents probably bought her the shirt.

Remember that there were 500 kids joining World Can't Wait at a protest in Berkeley, and most of them got extra credit for it at school and got praised by their lefty parents for being good little radicals.

Most wont let them. The young girls around our town dress fine when they leave the house and all go and change someplace else into their trashy clothes. The generally hide them at one girls house whose parents are losers and don't care.

Huh. Hmm... hmmm "generated between 300 and 400 tons of garbage..." ha ha ha ! "Early supporter of the war on Iraq ..." Yay! Go get 'em! Umm... hmm hmm "... has his eye on Iran ..." Good common sense.
