Reuters Cameraman Killed in Gaza, Visits from Reuters Spike

Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 2:39:19 pm PDT

Fadel Shana, a cameraman for the Reuters wire service, was killed yesterday in Gaza, under somewhat suspicious circumstances.

And oddly enough, there were 10 hits yesterday from the UK Canary Wharf office of Reuters; all of those hits went to this LGF page from 2006, when a car Shana was riding in (with some other suspicious people) was struck by an IAF missile: IAF Airstrike Hits Reuters Armored Car.

More about Shana’s death, at Israellycool: The Death of a Reuters Cameraman.

Suicide by Tank.

Hamas fires mortars at the IDF, in and among them a guy hops out of a car and points an optical device at an IDF tank. Optical devices are used to guide missiles as well as cameras. TC sees it aim at him, and preserves his kester and that of his crew.

Is this the new Palestinian "Boy Who Cried Wolf" parable? Feigning attacks so many times that everyone's surprised when one actually happens?

And yeah, those appearing, disappearing bicyclist "bodies" are really suspicious. Like so much Palestinian fauxography, they rush to the supposed site of an attack and then stage a "die in". Israeli should start lobbing rounds out into the ocean just to see how many actors drown trying to swim out there and "get hit".

We discussed this yesterday. Snapped shot has the right idea but their analysis is a bit off. Here is Fadel's body with his car in the background. It's smoldering a bit but it's not on fire. After they remove the body then the car bursts into flames. Notice only the interior of the car iis burning, this isn't a gas fire from leaking fuel. Not even the tires are burning. Then they put out the fire and hose down the scene. I think they set the fire in the car to destroy possible evidence and hosed down the scene for the same reason.

Bush, British PM Pledge Tough Stance on Iran's Nuclear Ambitions
WASHINGTON — President Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown jointly pledged to step up efforts to thwart Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and work with European leaders to increase sanctions on the country during a press conference outside the White House on Thursday.

Bush called it “naïve” to believe that Iran is not intending to transfer its nuclear enrichment capabilities from energy development to atomic bomb production. Bush described Iran as “untrustworthy,” and said that if the country “learns how to enrich, it is knowledge which can be used to develop a nuclear weapon.”

I'm sorry to say this.. but when you drive up in front of a battle ready tank in a fighting position.. in a car with a "TV" sign sticker on it and get out a big bulky looking box like device and set it up on a tripod and aim it at the tank.. it might be a tv camera.. or it might be a anti tank rocket or even a hammas owned shaped charge.. the guys in the tank .. can run away.. or shoot.. Israel rightly trains it's troops to shoot.

I would suggest TV crews stay a long way off.. or maybe go to the zoo and throw sticks at tigers in their cages if they want good action footage.

91 Ballistic4N6  Thu, Apr 17, 2008 3:19:07pm

The "well signed" truck is clearly in a culvert as per the video. The video from the photographer was taken from an elevated position toward the tank. So how would the tank crew tell that the video crew was what it was? At that distance someone on a ridge line with a shouldered camera with other compatriots, might look like a shoulder launch about to happen. The idiot "camera crew" if that was the true intent of this group, deserved to get this response, like pulling a "fake" gun on a cop.

Additionally, it is strange the bodies are on the road at the bottom of the culvert.

Sorry, this "crime scene" doesn't add up!

My theory :

The Zionist darts blew him several thousand feet into the air.

While he was heading up, then returning to earth, the firefighters put out the burning car. The ambulance came, went, and returned.

Then his body landed next to the formerly burning car and people attempted to remove it.

My theory :

The Zionist darts blew him several thousand feet into the air.

While he was heading up, then returning to earth, the firefighters put out the burning car. The ambulance came, went, and returned.

Then his body landed next to the formerly burning car and people attempted to remove it.

Well the way the photos were ordered, it broadcasts "screwy." The vehicle is in huge flames, but the bodies were not burned at all. What are we supposed to believe, they were hit, but the vehicle burst into flames AFTER? Well sometimes that happens in a car accident if the gas tank is ruptured, but there are pictures of an upset guy sitting half INSIDE the vehicle, all weepy eyed, but when was that? The interior really doesn't look scorched in anyway. Wouldn't have to have been BEFORE Before the car fire? What moron would put himself INSIDE a burning vehicle to pose? What moron photographer would put himself inside a burning vehicle to photograph a stooge? Or ... was the vehicle actually not on fire for a while? Screwy.

The Reuters video is so edited, it's hard to tell who's doing what, when and where. There is just a short clip of the tank firing - which is from his camera, but the running camera shots are from another camera and the bodies were already off the road.
Just like which was mentioned upthread, the vehicle was behind an embankment, so all that irate talk about it being properly marked is worthless - it was hidden from the tank they all evidently were at a minimum spying on.

Well here's Rueters "news" story about the incident:

Israeli shell killed Reuters cameraman: Gaza doctors
GAZA (Reuters) - Tiny darts sprayed from a controversial missile used by Israel killed a Reuters cameraman in Gaza, local doctors said on Thursday -- though Israeli forces would not say whether one of their tanks fired the fatal shot.

A medical examination and X-rays showed several 3 cm (inch) -long spikes, known as flechettes, in the body of Fadel Shana, a 23-year-old Palestinian. He was killed on Wednesday as he filmed an Israeli tank dug in about a kilometer (1,000 yards) away.

The last few seconds of video shot on Shana's tripod-mounted camera show the tank firing, then a mid-air explosion consistent with the burst of a missile. The camera was shattered in the explosion that killed Shana. Black metal darts were embedded in his body armor, which bore a fluorescent strip reading "PRESS".

Shana's soundman, Wafa Abu Mizyed, was wounded in the arm and two teenage bystanders were also killed in the incident. A Reuters car carrying "TV" and "Press" markings was destroyed.

Yunes Ramadan Awadallah, one of the physicians who examined Shana's body at Gaza's Shifa hospital, said he died of multiple lacerations from the projectiles, some of which entered his chest through his neck and shoulder, severing his spinal cord.

Reuters, backed by media organizations in the region and around the world, has requested an urgent investigation by the Israeli army, which has defended its use of flechette missiles in Gaza against complaints by human rights activists.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said she could not confirm that a tank fired at the cameraman nor comment on weaponry it might have used but said the army, which has expressed regret, hoped to cooperate with Reuters to study the incident.

Troops killed 17 Palestinians, including several civilians, on Wednesday after three Israeli soldiers were killed in clashes in the Hamas Islamist-controlled enclave. Another militant was killed in Gaza on Thursday.

182 Bubbaman  Thu, Apr 17, 2008 9:21:05pm

There are just too many inconsistencies here. If I were the IDF, I'd secure the entire video. But let's look at what has been made available. From the Al-Reuters site the amalgamated video contains a clip which is purportedly made by the cameraman. It shows a tank in the distance followed by a puff of smoke, a green puff appears in the air, and then the camera goes blank. Next we see a crew arriving at the scene to find bodies on the ground and a SUV which appears relatively intact. Note the appearance of the windshield which appears to be riddled with as many as a dozen "bullet" holes. We cut to a clip which appears to be at a Gaza hospital and then back to the scene. Finally, it appears that a "rescuer" is pulling away what appears to be a tripod from the proximity of the bodies. Then the tape cuts away to an interview with Reuter execs followed by some pix of the "deceased" and then a really short clip which has the vehicle in flames.

In a related article we have some pictures. The 6th photo shows the vehicle suddenly in "flames". Note that the two bodies have suddenly disappeared though the blood on the ground presumably where their bodies were remains. Note that an ambulance is immediately alongside a burning vehicle. There is also the appearance of a blood trail which is between the ambulance and the vehicle. Finally, a large, shiny metal object (bumper?) suddenly appears on the ground in proximity to where the bodies were. This item did not appear in the video. Photos 10 and 11 depict some Paleos hosing down the car and the road. Note, the large shiny metal object has disappeared.

So is this a Pallywood production? Without the original tape, it would be hard to say. A couple things are very troubling.

1) The SUV - The windshield appears to be riddled with bullet holes rather than the effect of an airburst munition which would obliterate the glass. Also, note that the holes in the windshield appear to be made externally rather than internally (classic bullet hole appearance with smaller entrance and larger exit pattern) yet the side and rear of the SUV appears to have been subject to a large explosion? If this had been a missile or shell hit the windshield should have been blown out or the holes would have had the reverse appearance. I need a larger rez image to be sure.

2) Why does the SUV suddenly burst into flames much later after the bodies have been removed? The timing is suspicious.

3) Why would an ambulance sit next to a vehicle in flames?

4) What is the shiny metal object that appears to be a bumper? What is it doing in between the bodies and why does it not appear in the video?

5) Why the rush to clean up the scene? This is out of character with typical Paleo catastrophes where they dance around with body parts and wreckage for hours?

183 Bubbaman  Thu, Apr 17, 2008 9:37:53pm

Getty has some more images of the scene and they raise more questions. Look at the one image of the cameraman's camera - it appears untouched. How would this guy, who appears in one image to be nearly decapitated have his camera escape unharmed? Also, how were the other three persons wounded/killed when they appear to be several hundred feet away?

184 Ilan Toren  Thu, Apr 17, 2008 9:47:13pm

I work in Malha as the same building as the Reuters office in Jerusalem. I think that I shared more than one elevator ride with the guy. It sounds to me that he was pointing a camera at the wrong thing at the wrong time. His vehicle, which I guess will no longer be taking my parking place, was a silver utility vehicle with letters "TV' in three high in brown paint on the hood. There is no way that any tank crew would be able to identify it as anything special from that distance. And with quassam crews doing their best to look like anything but terrorists....

185 Ilan Toren  Thu, Apr 17, 2008 9:50:50pm

Well going to ghetty and looking at pictures, and that vehicle is not the same as the one next that parks in Malha. For one it has TV in red on a white background. Still it would be hard to identify if not looking head on.

Merkava 3 and 4s were equipped with 120mm guns, used modified Flechette for similar anti-personnel roles. These rounds 105mm projectiles are fitted with a 120mm sabot to fit the larger barrel. The projectile used all combat ranges. It is filled with 5,000 steel darts, providing the tank an effective open-area AP capability, and has a high kill probability. I haven't read through all of these posts, but don't forget that the entire "hit by a missile" 2006 story was a complete fake. Reuters was so eager to show that its vehicle was well-marked, that they made a thorough and convincing record that no missile or rocket or anything more than random small arms fire ever came near their vehicle.

All of us have seen cars that have suffered far, far more damage from routine car accidents than the Reuters vehicle allegedly suffered from a direct missile strike.

And -- before I forget -- I haven't seen a good car-swarm story in a long time!

It's fake. If the reporting is true then it is fake.

Picture One
Picture Two

If you look at the two pictures it is not done by flechettes shell. Flechettes shells contains hundreds or thousands of darts. If it is shot by a tank the car will have lots of holds in it. It will not set the car on fire. Flechettes rounds are not incendiary weapon. Notice the front end of the car is almost untouch. If you google there are some pictures where the front window is still intact.

The video below use pellets instead of flechettes but the result are the same.

Looked like an airburst/beehive type round....nasty.

Obviously the first close shave didn't dissuade him.
Exceptional dedication. To something.

If it is airburst then the car will be blown to pieces. As a rule of thumb heavy explosive weapon against unarmored vehicle will destroy it completely.

Does working for Reuters entitle you to virgins, or do you have to kill people?

If you look at the two pictures it is not done by flechettes shell. Flechettes shells contains hundreds or thousands of darts. If it is shot by a tank the car will have lots of holds in it. It will not set the car on fire. Flechettes rounds are not incendiary weapon. Notice the front end of the car is almost untouch. If you google there are some pictures where the front window is still intact.

True. I served in the IDF as a tank crew member and I can confirm what ýou and others are saying here. Also, flechettes are very rarely used, especially in Gaza. If the car was hit by a regular armor-piercing shell it would have been annihilated completely.

The IMI/IDF 120mm APAM round carries six sub-munitions. Those six sub-munitions hold around 5,000 steel darts combined.

The APAM round is not a conventional flechette/beehive/cannister giant shotgun shell.

Dead photobugs video shows just one of those sub-munitions detonating. Presumably, the first one.

The damage to the rear of the vehicle could very well have been caused by a very close proximity detonation of one of those sub-munitions.

It is also possible that said damage could have resulted in an electrical short in whatever remained of the vehicles electrical system, or damaged spare camera batteries stored in the vehicle.

It is also possible that the Pallywood producers who, after the fact, clearly posed the additional "victims" several hundred meters down the road could have set the vehicle on fire themselves for added effect.

If you point large black shoulder mounted objects at tanks in a combat zone, you should expect a severely shortened life span.

Well, there is an element of blame here. With the optics available, it should have been quite easy for the tank crew to not only read the word "PRESS" on his flak jacket but also to identify the camera being used as a camera. That's if they were deliberately targetting him. But, if they were gunning for a single man at that range I would have expected the crew to use the coax to hose him down. My bet is the crew were firing a flechette round to discourage any Palis trying to sneak up on the tank in the dip, our Reuters chimp was there to catch the "glory" of Hamas attacking the "Evil Jooooooo's" tank, and the chimp was just unlucky enough to be a shade too close. As to the burning car, I suspect that was Pallywood productions trying to make the most of the occasion (after all, they wouldn't want to have to add smoke in later with Photoshop, would they?).

Wilbur Post of The Blank Pages of The Age has the situation well summed up - [Link: theblankpagesoftheage.blogspot.com...]

Right down to his description of the Shifa Hospital which suggested it was flechette rounds from the IDF tank that caused the damage that killed Bambi the Cameraman:-

"This is not just a hospital, it's a place that gives a whole new meaning to the words "operating theatre" - one that makes it an integral part of a shonky PR exercise being waged against Israel!"

It's fake. If the reporting is true then it is fake.

The video below use pellets instead of flechettes but the result are the same.

Second that.
The collection of photos show damage - but MORE damage appears over time. AT first glance, if one took the unburned vehicle photo out of the context and just looked at it, without knowing the narrative, it almost looks like the vehicle had been in a collision. It looked like the windshield was crunched IN by a larger mass than any damage a dart would do. And why is there a fire? - the engine seems to have been untouched - judging from that pristine hood. A dart punctured the fuel tank? Wouldn't that have exploded the vehicle? There's force, mass and friction - no explosive is necessary with combustable fuel.
The vehicle looks like it was hit predominately from one side. The hood is practically untouched, and given that the vehicle is in a sheltered area - embankments on both sides - especially high on the side facing the car side that is caved in, so how did it get crunched at that angle? If flechettes were used, "raining" down on it? No holes in the hood, but the roof is gonzo and the driver's door is smashed in? What? These things fly sideways, through dirt?
Surprised they haven't paraded around the darts to pose them with the body ... since that's the charge they are voicing to make the Israelis look mean.
They obviously got hammered, but by what though? And what were they doing in that peculiar spot? If the truth is suffiicent, why lie? Ahem.

The cameraman, Fadel Shana, who was killed has the same name as the cameraman who was lightly wounded back on August 26, 2006 when the 'IAF missile struck the Reuters armored car.'

8/26/06: Fadel Shana, a Reuters cameraman, was lightly wounded in the blast.

Lucky the first time, not the second. Why put yourself into such precarious positions repeatedly?
