Forum: The Rev. Wright Speech

Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 11:53:27 am PDT

The previous thread about Barack Obama’s belated disavowal of Reverend Jeremiah Wright is approaching 500 comments, so here’s another thread to discuss.

I’ve been switching back and forth between Fox News and MSNBC, risking ideological whiplash as MSNBC gushes over the speech...

Obama's speech was the bravest, most eloquent statement on race relations on America we have seen in our lifetime.

GAAAAAAAAH

Okay, I managed to pry that chip out of my neck. What the hell was I saying?

I love Obama acting like he didn't know anything when he's been recorded giving Wright a glowing introduction. So he's admitting he lied when he said all those nice things about Wright because he couldn't possibly known the man well enough to know if they were true or untrue.

The fact it's taken him this long is telling. Not that I needed anymore evidence that Obama has no business even running for president, much less being elected.

Obama is having a Daley Moment. That happens when Da Mayor is caught in the middle of something and goes on air to deny it. For some odd reason, the gambit works since it provides a diversion.

Watch for more of these as the election season continues. It occurs in Illinois all the time. Both Daley and Blago do it!

Don't be so certain. Obama is a snake like most of his Illinois Combine comrades. Saw a poll this morning on NBC-5 (WMAQ-TV) that showed over 50% of people claimed that the whole Wright episode would not affect Obama's candidacy.

What you are seeing now is what has been going on in Illinois for the better part of four decades, and in Chicago itself since the early 1930s. Obama is a product of this Machine, this Combine, and acts the part.

Rev. Wright makes me ashamed to call him a fellow Marine.

We all have flaws.. countries have them too. Is this nation perfect? Of course not. Our flaws have been well documented. But America, which provides so much opportunity to all, and has given Wright such extraordinary blessings during his life.. for him to constantly pick at the scabs at the expense of all that is good is such a tragedy. If it was only about Wright and his coming book, and his million dollar palace out with Whitey, we could only shake our heads and mutter about his ignorance and hypocrisy. But the influence he has on younger generations of black people is so profoundly detrimental, he and others who spew his form of bile are just plain evil.

Gergen said that Obama HAD to immediately denounce/remove himself from Wright AND that Obama HAD to express ANGER. That was the "emotion" Obama needed to display if Obama wanted to get back into the race...During the Obama "speech" I noted that Obama claimed "anger" at one point -- but I didn't find it to be genuine...He didn't sound angry, he didn't look angry, and he certainly didn't sound outraged. From what I saw of the speech I thought he did a decent job of disavowing Wright's statements but why didn't he do this before? Why did he stay in the church all these years? After the 911 stuff and "Goddamn America" becasme public he still stood by Wright and refused to denounce him. Why now? I suspect it's because Obama told privately Wright to shut up and go away for a while but Wright refused. Obama's not denouncing Wright because of his statements, he's denouncing him because he can no longer control him.

Mr. Cookie brought up an interesting point regarding this beknighted primary cycle: President George W Bush had a 32% approval rating. That's pretty darn stinky as approval goes. The Congress under the Dems after 2006 had a 12% approval rating. That is abysmal! And yet, out of that deemed-to-be-pretty-much-worthless Congress, we have 3 of the suckers at the top of the presidential nominee page. Good grief, what the heck happened here? Who did this? It sure wasn't 'the people,' because 'the people' don't like the Congress, and don't think any of those bozos should be running our country. So how did this disaster occur?

I remember reading several posts here after the first Obama "you don't understand" speech predicting that as a political solution to Obama's mess, Wright would publically mouth off further, than Obama would be "forced" to publically sever relations with Wright.

Should I still try to wound Obama, or does he need support to limp onto that stage in Denver?

See my earlier comment, Obama's got the nod. He turned over his donor list to the DNC - that's never done until it's know who the real nominee is.

Koskidz: "Uncle Tom" Obama

I have been a huge supporter of Barack. He is the guy I've been behind for quite awhile now. Check my older diaries if you wonder about that. And while I've been steeling myself for a Barack loss in November, because I think the Repug machine is too good for him to beat, I had resigned myself to still working hard for him and for the Progressive cause!

But today something changed for me...

Today, the scales fell from my eyes and I saw Barack Obama for what he truly is: a weak man and a standard politician. I really never thought I would say this...

But I am disgusted with him!

Charles, get a screenshot! Quick!

See my earlier comment, Obama's got the nod. He turned over his donor list to the DNC - that's never done until it's know who the real nominee is.

The Wright Wrending is just to give him a push-off in his mad paddle for the middle now.

I don't disagree that he will be the nominee but he will have to do a crapload of rowing to even close in on the center...

This creates a personal problem.
I just re-registered as a Democrat for the Oregon primaries. The theory was to vote for Hillary and make sure this goes to the convention.
But now, if Obama implodes too soon, what are the chances that Hillary will get the nod?
I think Obama is the weaker candidate (although many Dems, like my wife, refuse to give into the Wright stuff, "No, he didn't mean that").

So the question is, who do I vote for now?

Should I still try to wound Obama, or does he need support to limp onto that stage in Denver?

As it stands now unless the superdelegates all make their decisions before the rest of the primaries are held then this goes to the convention. The more seats Hill goes into the convention with the better a chance that Obama will not be the nominee.

re: #242 cblesz

That is the problem. You think if we had all of the primaries that Obama won a few months ago now, he would win? I think not. I hate Hillary almost as much, but geez. Nobody knew anything about this guy until Hannity started talking about him because the MSM did not do it's freaking job.

Great.

So they didn't do it to the great dis-service of their chosen candidate. Serves 'em right.

Hopefully Hillary will gain in the polls continuously until the Dem convention, and the convention itself will be highly contentious.

313 Killgore Trout  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 12:41:16pm

Koskidz....

But NNNOOOOOOO! Now he is engaged in the worst kind of pandering. He has told us, in no uncertain terms, that he is no different than the Clintons: anyone who interferes with what you are doing gets thrown to the wolves.

And Barack didn't stop there. He threw every black man, woman and child overboard too! What Rev Wright has to say is what every black American believes: that racism is alive and well and living in white middle class America.

Unfortunately, Barack has decided that he doesn't need black votes to win. I'm sure he was told by his white advisors that "black folk" will support him anyway. So why not come out and disrespect the whole community. Barack didn't transcend black-white politics; rather he chose to become white!

All because some white folks on CNN were appalled that Rev Wright didn't shuffle in and say "yes massa".

That was the idea. Soviet bombers didn't have the range back then.

I don't know if the geography works out in favor of your idea. I may be mistaken, but I think the bomber trips were planned as trans-Arctic, like the missile trips. So your proposed move would probably put the capital closer for the Rooskie bombers. Anyway, irrelevant since the advent of the ICBM, of course.

I believe Obama will still get the nomination. If he doesn't, the interest groups that have been cobbled together to make up the modern Democratic Party will splinter. There will be a lot of very angry people out there, and they're already threatening to recreate '68. If the Dems have to choose between moderates and menopausal feminists vs. young voters, elite snobs, and African-American voters, they're going to cut Hillary and her supporters loose. So instead of running Hillary, who could actually win, they'll run the Obamessiah, and it's 1972 all over again.

Asked why the change in posture, Mr. Obama said he had not seen the televised comments until last night. When he did, he said they “shocked and surprised” him, and he decided to clarify his position.

Wrights' Wrant was no different from any of the other Wrant's we've heard.
B. Hussein, was "shocked and surprised" only LAST NIGHT!

I call Baker Sierra.

Wrightgate was bogging B. Hussein down. Wright was sent on a stalking horse mission.

re: #264 galloping granny

I would say that is an extremely safe bet. Yesterday morning early I ran across an article that stated that Obama had spent his campaign money to hire a PR firm to represent Wright & vet his speeches. (Written several days before I saw it.) And then within days/hours of that time he speaks to the NAACP - broadcast in entirety - and then the National Press Club - also broadcast in entirety - and now Obama disowns his remarks. Though as Shep Smith is currently pointing out, specifically NOT disowning Wright.

That looks to me like just a different version of the old shell game.

Very interesting! Do you have a link to the article?

425 ljmw  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 12:58:52pm

I think the reports of Obama's demise are premature.

As I said on a thread yesterday. The Obama campaign will now emphasize the betrayal aspect of this situation which will result in a Sister Souljah moment effectively creating a bridge on which independents and moderates can find a place to stand.

So don't get too cocky comfortable.

I doubt it. I don't think Obama's money is mostly coming from within the US anyway. Anybody in the world can go to O's website and donate up to $200 without O having to either track where it comes from or report it. Most of the world really wants Obama to be the next US president. Figures. Wright claims he's trying to "bridge gaps" too ; he's all for his buddy Fharakhan who claims that Caucasians are not human beings but devils who deserve extermination.

Hang on a second here. To be modestly intellectually honest, the GOP has hung on to some religious hate-baiters for a very long time. Robertson and Falwell blamed gays for 9/11 and Hagee blamed the sinful people of New Orleans for Katrina. He also insulted the Catholic church. Unlike Wright, these folks are plugged into the political party's power structure. I think it's a bit more hypocritical to suggest guilt by association here. In addition, these people's endorsements were sought out even after their positions were well known (Guiliani sought Robertson's endorsement and McCain sought Hagee's endorsement). Seems like this a bit like the kettle calling the pot black...no pun intended. Indeed, the only thing to take away here is that hating gays is more acceptable than Wright's form of divisiveness. But in the end, hating is hating and any party that relies on fear and hate to advance itself can only go so far. I think the GOP needs to focus on the positives of McCain versus over blow this thing. That's where we should be focused.

Never underestimate the devotion the Obama camp has to its candidate, its spiritual cult leader.

I also happen to think it may be a feint by the Obama camp. Put Wright up right now and have Obama denounce him publically. Watch Obama's poll numbers in Indiana and North Carolina over the next few days. Call me nuts, but I think they're going to go up over this.

Anybody got the real story?"

Here's the Wikipedia summaryf of his service record.

From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University,[1] in Richmond. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's 1961 challenge to "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," Wright gave up his student deferment, left college and joined the United States Marine Corps and became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. In 1963, after two years of service, Wright then transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian.[10][6] Having excelled in corpsman school, Wright was then trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he graduated as salutatorian.[6] Wright was assigned as part of the medical team charged with care of President Lyndon B. Johnson (see photo of Wright caring for Johnson after his 1966 surgery). Before leaving the position in 1967, the White House awarded Wright three letters of commendation.

There's a secret Democrat plan to parachute Rev. Jeremiah Wright in to replace Obama as their candidate for President of the United States.

It's the only explanation for Wright's headline-grabbing antics of the past few days.

Name a candidate that has had an equivenlant relationship.

In the meantime, Democraps in control of Congress have allowed the price of oil to skyrocket due to an abysmal lack of a coherent energy policy. Put the touchy feely types in charge of government and we get commodity whiplash.

I just received this note from Freedom Watch:

In a 2006 press release, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed that Democrats had a common sense plan to bring down skyrocketing fuel prices. The average price for a gallon of gas when Democrats took control of congress that November was $2.25 - a price that Pelosi and other liberals claimed amounted to "price gouging". The average price of a gallon of gas today is now up to a record $3.61, and in Speaker Pelosi's home Congressional district in the California bay area, the price tops $4 a gallon.

Despite the price going up $1.36 per gallon (that's 60%!) since Democrats took control of Congress 15 months ago, an out-of-touch Speaker Pelosi and Congressional leadership have still not released this so-called common sense plan to bring prices under control. Just last week in an interview with Larry King, Speaker Pelosi cited the national average as being only $2.56.

Rising fuel prices don't only raise the cost to fill our gas tanks, but they affect the prices we pay for almost every other product - including necessities like food, and Congress is doing nothing to alleviate the strain on Americans' wallets. Click here to see just how out of touch Speaker Pelosi and Congressional leaders are. Then call Speaker Pelosi's office at 202-225-0100 and remind her that America does need a common sense plan to bring gas prices under control.

And of course, the Fed lower interest rates again devalues the dollar causing oil prices to rise for US citizens and become less expensive for other countries thereby increasing demand in those countries.

I think the GOP needs to focus on the positives of McCain versus over blow this thing. That's where we should be focused.

From Mr. Obama’s first autobiography, “

Dreams From My Father

,”

“We don’t buy into these false divisions here. It’s not about income, Barack. Cops don’t check my bank account when they pull me over and make me spread-eagle against the car. These miseducated brothers, like that sociologist at the University of Chicago, talking about ‘the declining significance of race.’ Now, what country is he living in?”

But wasn’t there a reality to the class divisions, I wondered? I mentioned the conversation I’d had with his assistant, the tendency of those with means to move out of the line of fire. He took off his glasses and rubbed what I now saw to be a pair of tired eyes.

“I’ve given Tracy my opinion about moving out of the city,” he said quietly. “That boy of hers is gonna get out there and won’t have a clue about where, or who, he is.”

“It’s tough to take chances with your child’s safety.”

“Life’s not safe for a black man in this country, Barack. Never has been. Probably never will be.”

A secretary buzzed, reminding Reverend Wright of his next appointment. We shook hands, and he agreed to have Tracy prepare a list of members for me to meet. Afterward, in the parking lot, I sat in my car and thumbed through a silver brochure that I’d picked up in the reception area. It contained a set of guiding principles-a “Black Value System”-that the congregation had adopted in 1979. At the top of the list was a commitment to God, “who will give us the strength to give up prayerful passivism and become Black Christian activists, soldiers for Black freedom and the dignity of all humankind.” Then a commitment to the black community and black family, education, the work ethic, discipline, and self-respect.

A sensible, heartfelt list-not so different, I suspected, from the values old Reverend Philips might have learned in his whitewashed country church two generations before. There was one particular passage in Trinity’s brochure that stood out, though, a commandment more self-conscious in its tone, requiring greater elaboration. “A Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness,” the heading read. “While it is permissible to chase ‘middleincomeness’ with all our might,” the text stated, those blessed with the talent or good fortune to achieve success in the American mainstream must avoid the “psychological entrapment of Black ‘middleclassness’ that hypnotizes the successful brother or sister into believing they are better than the rest and teaches them to think in terms of ‘we’ and ‘they’ instead of ‘US’!”

Wright's message is what attracted Obama in the first place.

Obama's guilt is choosing to associated with Wright.

McCain will lower taxes (or at least he'll try).

He opposed Bush's Tax Cuts and didn't come out in favor of them until he decided to run for President as a Republican. I, therefore, doubt that claim from him.

McCain will appoint Conservative SCOTUS justices (or at least he'll try).

I've seen nothing but words to suggest that his nominees for SCOTUS will be conservative. Logically, they will be more conservative than the socialists that Hillary or Obama would put up, but that isn't comforting. More words.

McCain has considerable inside-the-beltway political experience. That's usually popularly portrayed as negative (mostly by people who don't have any), but I think the reality is that if you want to get anything done its a plus, not a minus.

His experience is being a 'Maverick' which means that he sides with the Democrats on FAR too many things. That is NOT a trait we want in a Republican President during a time that we have a Democrat Controlled Congress.

McCain has also been on the Senate Armed Service Committee (we ARE actually in a war), not to mention has actual military service.

He also pushed legislation that tied the hands of interrogators and also has come out in support of closing Gitmo.

I love this from the AP:

Obama stated flatly that he doesn't share the views of the man who officiated at his wedding, baptized his two daughters and been his pastor for 20 years. The title of Obama's second book, "The Audacity of Hope," came from a Wright sermon.

Common sense at the AP?

We must be approaching the Apocalypse.

Also, the AP headline is "Obama SAYS he's outraged" (emph. added).

The skepticism is so refreshing!

Rev. Wright "gaslights" his community. He set himself up to be the all-knowing paternal figure, then tells them lies about the white community, makes them paranoid with conspiracy theories, tells them to avoid the one thing that would make them independent from him: becoming middle class.

Gaslighting was first identified in the movie by the same name with Ingrid Bergman. Her husband who married her so he could search for treasure in her house, convinces her that she is too weak, and sick and unstable to care for herself, and that the outside world will hurt her. She becomes paranoid and dependent on her husband, and sees him as her only true friend. Very manipulative and evil.

Anybody notice that he held out condemning "Rev" Wright's comments, until AFTER Wright threatened him with [paraphrased] "If you get elected in November, I'm coming after you, boy..."

The "boy" is in deep doo doo now, 'cause he's damned if he does (from Wright), and damned if he doesn't (from his wife!).

If this denunciation of Wright was not orchestrated by the Obama camp, can we expect to see video of Obama in the pews during one of the Rev's conspiracy-laced racist rants sermons suddenly come to light? Or perhaps some-seriously pissed-off fellow Trinity congregants 'outing' Obama as being present? Even anecdotal evidence would be quite damning.

Obama's done. Kaput. History.

What worked for him in Chicago politics is killing him on the national stage.

(which is ok with me, btw)

No matter how badly this thing is going for Obama with Wright, unfortunately this empty-suit politician is not "kaput" yet. He has many, many heartfelt supporters and rich backers who right now are pleading for any reason to get past Jeremiah Wright and praying that America will just resign itself to Obama's rhetoric today.

Obamaniacs will be doing their level best, starting this evening, to browbeat their candidate's critics into just calming down and to suggest that he has fully owned up and disowned Wright. The Obama family's 20 years in Wright's pews and major monetary donations to Wright's church have, of course, not been accounted for in the least, but the Dems are plugging their ears and going "la la la" on those issues.

There's more work to be done for anyone who does not want a greenhorn collectivist president who possesses no diplomatic chops and who is going to be turned into yesterday's roadkill when dealing with the likes of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Vladimir Putin, Hu Jintao, or Hugo Chavez. Obama remains a very, very dangerous neophyte candidate who still, at this hour, entrances tens of millions of people.

A political analysis. Black candidates for President will always have a glass ceiling of racial huckstering, either participating in it, or having a longterm supporter who epitomizes it. Jackson, Sharpton, and the like could never be credible candidates, nor will Obama now ,given this likely fatal flaw of 20 years in the pew with Rev. Wright in a general election. Within the next 10 years it is far more likely to have a Hispanic President than an African-American one, should there not be a better appreciation that it is time to shed racial grievances in a 21 st century world.

As for Obama, I pity him personally at such a rank betrayal. But as someone living here I appreciate what Wright has done. If Obama can be bamboozled by this Reverend, how could he really deal with Ahmadinejad, North Korea, and a Russia still being led by Putin behind the scenes?

Wright seems utterly sincere to me. He strikes me as having a true spiritual calling. When he says, "America's chickens have come home to roost," I can't fault his logic. Haven't we been squandering hard earned taxpayer money on overseas adventures while we starve poor children?

Strange how she left out the fact that he said 9/11 was "America's chickens have come home to roost."

9/11 happened, IIRC, after 8 years of Clinton.

You’ve got to admit the Dem’s(including Obama and Hillary) and their friends in MSM have done an excellent job keeping public focus on the Dem’s. By framing the election in this manner, it’s like McCain(the GOP) is a mere formality - a legitimate candidate but a long-shot of no account.

The long draw-out nomination contest to see who is on top of the Dem ticket, Hillary or Obama, verses who rides as VP - again Hillary or Obama - has the added advantage of reducing any campaign time-frame for real debate on issues with the opposing party. Add-in we should be experiencing a confluence, or merging, of the various crisis’ - oil, food, metals, numerous & various commodities - with a very real World War and this looks to be a very nasty and bloody election.

Don't agree with you on that one. There are plenty of very politically attractive African-Americans out there who got their positions by raw talent and solid hard work, and decency. The media isn't pandering to THEM, they ignore them. People know quality when they see it. Michael Steele of Maryland didn't lose the Senate because of the whites or blacks or hispanics of Maryland, he carried the statewide votes resoundingly - proving a wide appeal that crossed "racial" lines. He lost it because of Baltimore, alone. A majority Black- Democrat-controlled city.
Tired of hearing the Democrat baiting charge that "whites" are somehow stuck and can't vote for a Black candidate. That's something Wright would say.

I am suggesting, quite reasonably, that the requirements of the American voter is that racial huckstering, at this time of American history, is unsupported, undesirable, and reflects an irrelevant issue as to where American society is today.

No worries. I was referring to us as voters, not as LGF posters. Yes, 'glass ceiling' is the term I found objectionable, as it implies that discrimination on a part of the electorate is why a black man couldn't become president.

Great post --

The Wright train wreck was the last thing Obama needed, heading into a North Carolina primary where he is slipping badly.

Wright revealed himself as a mean spirited, and imo, envious man, who refused to take on the role "of the shoulders on which Obama had to stand."

He is a petty and small person, who has likely single-handedly destroyed the candidacy of the only viable African American Presidential candidate in the history of the United States. Instead of helping to lift African Americans up, he insulted and demeaned them by trying to "keep them in their place" -- and that includes Barack Obama above all.

Rev Wright earned that epitaph -- I hope he can live the rest of his days knowing it.

I would have never voted for Obama (or Hillary for that matter), but the fashion of Obama's destruction is sad, and unhealthy for our politics, and for our country.

An old politico once said, "I don't care what you say about me before labor day, just spell my name right."

As much as it pains me to say this, I don't think this debacle will have any impact in November.

And by the way, as a born-again Christian, I'm really curious about this "Black Church." Is that a new religion that worships blackness? If Wright's a pastor, wouldn't he know pretty well what the Bible says about worshiping anything but God? And he claims to be a Christian? What a travesty! What a liar! It makes me want to puke.

Just to be fair on this point:

Hagee's endorsement was proactively sought by the McCain campaign according to Hagee.

[Link: www.editorandpublisher.com...]

The religious right is fairly well entrenched in the Republican power structure relative to folks like Jeremiah Wright. Being fairly important power brokers they are able to influence policy and the party takes note of them unlike Wright.

Seems like Bush at least talks to Robertson on policy issues: [Link: www.cnn.com...]
Robertson is a reliable vote getter:
[Link: www.usatoday.com...]
Falwell had at least a personal connection to President Bush:
[Link: www.whitehouse.gov...]

As president, President Bush would have some influence in the party.

Many of these people as previously mentioned have indeed said some hateful things.

Again, McCain can win this. He just needs to focus on what he's got going on for him. Going down this line of mudslinging is not good for the country. McCains fiscal policies can be considered objectively better.

I'm saddened by the gleefulness of the downfall of Obama. I don't think he's a bad guy- just not the guy for president. I think both sides associated with less than perfect people. I would prefer to talk about whether universal health care really makes sense and whether people understand the implications of those types of decisions.

I would prefer to talk about whether universal health care really makes sense and whether people understand the implications of those types of decisions.

What we really should consider is that Obama did make long-standing philosophical choices in allying for two decades with that church, and now must face the consequences of those particular choices, which show concealment of a divisive and pessimistic perspective about our country that is anathema to most Americans.

Much of the "glee" is in having this character issue found out at long last, since, because Obama has no executive political resume to speak of, he is placing all of his candidacy's eggs in the "judgment and character" basket. It is an issue that a lot of us have known to be lurking below the popular surface for quite some time. I am greatly relieved and, yes, gleeful, about this discovery on the Wright issue, because millions of Americans have been bamboozled by the smooth, empty talk of this man who, in my view, remains profoundly unprepared to defend our nation in the role of president.

Personally, I am deeply distressed by America's headlong rush into support for socialist principles and unliateral self-weakening on national defense in an age of global jihad. On both of these fronts, Obama is a deplorable candidate. Looking past his feel-good, euphemism-laden rhetoric, an Obama presidency will not be healthy for America in either the short term or long term, and if this Wright episode does actually end up derailing Obama's candidacy, I think America will be far better off for it.

He's not just the wrong guy to be president-- HIS LACK OF VALUES, his constant posturing and lying about knowing the CONTEXT AND CONTENT of TwoWrongWright's MANY many many speeches and sermons, his constant dithering about nothing all cloaked in fuzzy buzzwords that hide the TRUE socialist/Marxist INTENTIONS of his twisted heart, make him MORE than just the wrong guy.

These issues (and they are NOT "distractions" as he calls them) make him the WORST POSSIBLE CANDIDATE ever.

Listening to bits and bobs of his "rebuttal" interview today, I am more convinced than ever that he's just WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Several of you have theorized that this is all theatrics.

He has no idea what he's playing at. Suddenly, he avers, he heard TwoWrongs talk about Farrakhan as the voice of black America and he's "upset" by this. 20 years! he sat and heard this crap on Sundays. 20 years. And if you give him the benefit and say he snoozed through it-- he DIDN'T snooze through the well publicized "God D---n" America speech of Wrights. He didn't snooze through that speech in which Wright claimed that America was getting what it deserved on 9/11, when Wright claimed that America had created the AIDS virus to kill blacks.....he was front and center in the political arena AND HE DID NOTHING. He pretended to chide, to chuckle to wave it off with the standard "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" sort of dismissal.

ARRGGGHHHHH if the voting community misses this opportunity to examine BOTH MEN and see the error of this Hate-ideology, it will be an object lesson that is needed and missed.

There was a time in our history where articulate black men like Wright had no real outlet for their intelligence other than the kind of anti-authoritarian mocking performance such as he gave at the Press Club. But that day is long gone and shame on him for giving that absolutely disgusting shucking and jiving (but if you throw in the word hermenutic its supposedly ok, a la Cornel West)performance I am glad Obama used this word) is totally reprehensible and shows it is he who is not ready to give up the power and privelege whcih come with victim status.

I love the implication in the Torah that Moses does not get to the pormised land. It is so true that some things are generational. Whatever good the civil rights generation did, most of them cannot realize that those days are over. America is keeping its promise to its people like no other civiliztion in human history.

Lastly, I think it is unfair for people to criticize Obama for throwing Wright under the bus. He showed good character by not dumpning a friend right away like the Clintons do.

From your link,

JERUSALEM – Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. demonstrated he is a "man of principle" by sticking to his teachings of "black liberation theology" during today's highly publicized session with the news media, Malik Zulu Shabazz, national chairman of the New Black Panther Party, told WND in an interview.

Shabazz' peddles his own flavor of "black liberation theology".

766 Captkirk35  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 6:31:57pm

I think we stand at a fascinating point in history with these events surrounding Obama and Wright. The "Black Community" now finds itself with the choice of how to respond to a level of criticism getting leveled at its belief system (not all African Americans, but a great deal), and how it views its place in the greater society. This is long overdue, and will be highly influenced by today's culture, and how its collective victimhood should be viewed. Obama has effectively said, 'I can't go there. I'm picking the side of America'. Good for him. Before Wright he could hide this moral dilemma, and put the inevitability of this confrontation off, yet again, to some distance time. Obama had to ask himself, do I want to be president, or a member of this cult of victimhood, and he chose wisely. It will be interesting to see how the "culture" reacts. The could very well turn against him.

773 WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 9:11:18pm

The most significant and telling thing for me is that Obama was willing to subject his innocent children (for their entire lives) to the vile stream of hatred as espoused by Rev. Wright.
In so doing Obama has ensured and guaranteed that his next generation will be brainwashed into hating and fearing "rich white people"
There can be only two reasons that Obama would have behaved in this manner, either he believes this garbage or he did it out of political expediency...either way he he has made himself unfit to occupy the high office to which he aspires.
