Iran Building Illegal Telecom Network in Lebanon

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 8:22:34 am PDT

According to a Lebanese government report, Iran is helping the terrorist group Hizballah build an illegal telecommunications network capable of eavesdropping on all telephone calls in the country.

Syria and Iran are preparing their proxy terrorists for war on Israel, and this is another front.

An official Lebanese government report reveals that Iran is setting up an illegal telecommunication network across Lebanon, capable of intercepting all telephone conversations in the country, the Saudi-owned daily al-Sharq al-Awsat reported Sunday.

According to the report, Iran has set up this network to aid the Lebanon-based guerilla group Hezbollah.

In an interview with al-Sharq al-Awsat, Lebanese Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh said that the “issue of communications has been under discussion for a long time, but we were waiting for them [Hezbollah] to respond to the security authorities who requested they stop all infringements.”

According to Hamadeh, the Lebanese cabinet is planning to discuss this Iranian network on Monday, and later bring the issue before the United Nations Security Council as well as the Arab League, al-Awsat reported.

In the interview, Hamadeh added that Hezbollah was making efforts to link all the militias in Lebanon, Syria and Iran via a vast telecommunications network.

“Their goal is not security resistance. They want to connect between all the Iranian and Syrian militias and they want to eavesdrop on everyone,” Hamadeh said.

Lebanon has refused to go after Hizbullah with full force and effect - carrying out the terms of UN SCR 1701. The UN doesn't want to engage in war against Hizbullah either, despite the fact that Hizbullah continues to dominate South Lebanon and is rebuilding its capabilities so that it will launch another war against Israel at its time and place of choosing. The next war will be much bloodier and more damaging to all.

Let's also consider that the Hizbullah telcom efforts aren't just to eavesdrop on other Lebanese citizens, but to prevent Israelis from eavesdropping on Hizbullah communications. They're trying to harden their command and control efforts by denying Israeli forces with critical intel. They don't want their radio chatter intercepted - and this helps in that direction.

Diplomatic sources close to Tehran on Wednesday quoted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as telling a high-ranking Arab official that Lebanon will not have a new President or a new government before the end of U.S. President George Bush's term Jan. 20, 2009.
Meanwhile, a French diplomatic source familiar with Iran's policy, said Tehran was "waiting for a change in the U.S. administration before it decides whether it wants negotiations on the nuclear issue."

The idea of the Lebanese *government* politely asking Hezbollah to stop building this communications network and then waiting for a reply is hysterical. That's like asking a fox to stop killing your chickens.
The implications are far from funny. If they were serious they could send in the Army to sort it out, they don't seem to be able or wish to do so. What does this say about the state of their Army. What kind of strength/capability does their air force have?

The network is supposed to be spying on phone traffic in Lebanon and being used to contact Syria and Iran. I'm not sure what Intel they expect to get in Lebanon, apart from spying on the Army, who else would pose a threat to them. They can contact their mates in Syria and Iran easily enough, so are they worried about Israeli and Western eavesdropping? Is it just a more efficient way to co-ordinate an attack on Israel (assuming Syria joins in)?
Is this system just supposed to listen into phone conversations in Lebanon and to have a more secure way of contacting their terrorist sponsors, or is there more.
If they have the range to contact Iran they can cover Iraq. Not just Govt traffic but perhaps also the Iraqi Army. Then there are Coalition forces. Does it have any jamming capabilities. The Israelis had no problem outwitting the Syrians when bombing the NK site last year and Iran has the same system. Is this a similar system or an improvement (if so where did they get the components from). Way too many questions that do not get answered. I hope the Intelligence community have this covered.

#52 aboo-Hoo-Hoo
The naharnet piece is very interesting. How can Iran say what will or will not happen concerning the Lebanese Presidency. Only if they are going to use Hezbollah to dictate the political agenda, and what do they have to gain from it, apart from chaos. Considering Dinnerjacket is always abusing the US why is his priority to negotiate with Washington NOT WITH EUROPEANS. Is he trying to head off a US attack to give himself time to keep his nuclear ambitions on track, and perhaps back a war on Israel using Hesbollah to *push the jews into the sea* before more trouble comes his way. Or is he waiting for Obama?
Both Iran and Syria are offering titbits in exchange for a *role in Iraq*. They have no role to play in Iraq - it's a country in its own right. True, it's still fairly wobbly but making progress, but they are terrified that Iraq will make a go of it. It would give the lie to the propoganda that Iraq is a US puppet government and that the only acceptable rule in the ME is Islamist/Sharia. Iran and Syria don't want a *role* in Iraq they really want to control/run it. It would join a massive tract of land from Iran to the Med (absorbing Lebanon). If they do that Israel is in big trouble, and if they attack it could start a war that would reverberate around the ME and beyond.
Someone somewhere needs to be all over this like a rash. Sounds like John Bolton is the man for the job.

One of my musing/long posts, sorry.

85 Mardukhai  5/06/08 12:06:19 pm reply quote

Of course they can do that. Cell phones are remarkably insecure. There are work arounds, like shooting at Hizbollah cell towers, but I doubt if they can maintain a network like that outside their area of control.
