Obama Changes His 'Unconditional' Position - Update: Video Added

Sat, May 10, 2008 at 12:02:40 pm PST

In yet another New York Times advocacy piece for Barack Obama, we discover that the Obama campaign is trying to rewrite history again.

Susan E. Rice, a former State Department and National Security Council official who is a foreign policy adviser to the Democratic candidate, said that “for political purposes, Senator Obama’s opponents on the right have distorted and reframed” his views. Mr. McCain and his surrogates have repeatedly stated that Mr. Obama would be willing to meet “unconditionally” with Mr. Ahmadinejad. But Dr. Rice said that this was not the case for Iran or any other so-called “rogue” state. Mr. Obama believes “that engagement at the presidential level, at the appropriate time and with the appropriate preparation, can be used to leverage the change we need,” Dr. Rice said. “But nobody said he would initiate contacts at the presidential level; that requires due preparation and advance work.”

The problem is, Barack Obama did say he’d meet with Iran unconditionally, in front of a lot of people, at the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate last July.

He was specifically and directly asked if he would meet with the leader of Iran (and the leaders of several other “so-called rogue states”) without preconditions, in the first year of his presidency, and his answer was, “I would.”

Democratic Debate Transcript, CNN/YouTube - Council on Foreign Relations.

QUESTION: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since.

In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous.

There’s some “reframing” going on here, all right.

Hot Air - History re-written: Obama never said he would meet personally with Iran without precondition, says advisor

Here’s the video:

Youtube Video

UPDATE at 5/10/08 3:34:47 pm:

Obama’s own web site refutes his new spin: Barack Obama | Change We Can Believe In | Foreign Policy.

Diplomacy: Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions. Now is the time to pressure Iran directly to change their troubling behavior. Obama would offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation. Seeking this kind of comprehensive settlement with Iran is our best way to make progress.

It shows he was thinking typical moonbat thinking, "I'm going to at least try to talk to our enemies, maybe avert a war, and without asking them to make all these promises or deals before I'll even talk to them."

Sounds so "reasonable" until someone starts pointing out all the specific things that this sentence means Obama will accept in dictator actions and still talk to them.

I've always wondered wy Kerry picked him to be the keynote speaker at the Dem. Convention.

Putting together all the rumors/whispers I'm hearing around here, I gather a lot of his support is coming from people who expect positions in his admin.

Example: Pat Leahy wants to be Attorney General.

Add to that, the idea of another Clinton/Two-fer gives alot of Dems a huge migraine.

Quite interesting in the lighting level that CNN used compared to FNC. I would imagine that they both were using the same satellite feed from the same camera. This is a debate question, and it both calls his leadership bold, but makes the judgment call that meeting with those dictators would "bridge the gap" as if talking to them is all we need not have opposing goals with each of them.

You can't put pre-conditions on terrorist thugs. Unless one considers FOX NEWS to be a terrorist organization. Then you can. It's quite simple. Talking to FOX NEWS "legitimizes" the enemy,so pre-conditions are necessary or,better yet, don't talk to FOX at all. Talking to murdering, low life terrorist thugs is O.K. because they are not the enemy. Pre-conditions are not necessary with your friends. See how simple this all is when you understand who the left considers a friend, and who they consider an enemy?

Jeremiah Wright's 'Trumpet'
The content of the magazine produced by Barack Obama's pastor reveals the content of his character.
by Stanley Kurtz
05/19/2008, Volume 013, Issue 34

To the question of the moment--What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?--I answer, Obama knew everything, and he's known it for ages. Far from succumbing to surprise and shock after Jeremiah Wright's disastrous performance at the National Press Club, Barack Obama must have long been aware of his pastor's political radicalism. A careful reading of nearly a year's worth of Trumpet Newsmagazine, Wright's glossy national "lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious," makes it next to impossible to conclude otherwise.

Wright founded Trumpet Newsmagazine in 1982 as a "church newspaper"--primarily for his own congregation, one gathers--to "preach a message of social justice to those who might not hear it in worship service." So Obama's presence at sermons is not the only measure of his knowledge of Wright's views. Glance through even a single issue of Trumpet, and Wright's radical politics are everywhere--in the pictures, the headlines, the highlighted quotations, and above all in the articles themselves. It seems inconceivable that, in 20 years, Obama would never have picked up a copy of Trumpet. In fact, Obama himself graced the cover at least once (although efforts to obtain that issue from the publisher or Obama's interview with the magazine from his campaign were unsuccessful).

Don't know about redstate.com, but...
One, the dingup was a booboo.
Two, it was Little Boy, and Fat Man, in that order.

maybe. but honestly, he's being giving a free ride so whatever he says and does even if it's contrary to what he's said and done in the past is ignored. makes me want to puke. hopefully his free ride doesn't last in the general.

It will.....and then some. We ain't seen nothing yet.
As soon as the witch is formally dead, there will be no more Clintonistas and therefore no one in the MSM to challenge the Obamassiah.

Ironing is in the top one of the list of things I really hate to do.

Note that I didn't say I LIKE it. I'm good at it, out of necessity, but ....

Ironing is dangerous. When I was in college, one of the boys' dorms burned. The fire started when a boy threw water on a small electrical fire at the iron connection.

We all stood outside our dorm, giving coffee to the volunteer firemen and laughing at the girls who were flushed out with the boys (this was back in the "no girls in the boys dorm" days).

Obama and his Etch a Sketch. Whenever he says something that turns out to be a lie or just plain stupid he just flips the Etch a Sketch upside down and shakes it and makes it go away.

Lookie here. I never said that. Now let me eat my damn Waffle!

re: #81 wahabicorridor

I dunno, ploomie. Saw Larry King's show with his round table of talking heads. Carole Simpson was repugnant. Talked about her 'nightmare' being that Obama gets the nomination but doesn't get elected because America won't vote for a black and then came this whopper - "THIS COUNTRY IS ALL ABOUT RACE!'

If that's going to be the prism the media continues to view this thru, then the general will be nothing more than an exercise in redemption.

Redemption for the righteous elect, damnation for the wicked knuckle-draggers.
The odor of sanctimony and judgmentalism will be unbearable.
