Tech Note: New Link Reporting Feature

Fri, May 23, 2008 at 12:30:52 pm PDT

Extending our comment reporting feature to the spinoff links feature is a natural. Like comments, the links are content supplied by our users, and occasionally a link will be posted that is inappropriate for one reason or another and needs to be deleted.

So, when you’re logged in to your LGF account, you’ll now see a little exclamation point icon next to each spinoff link. Clicking it grays out the background and pops up a dialog box, asking if you want to report the link for offensive content or recommend it to us. (Hit the cancel button to forget it and bail out.)

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.

Hey Charles, any plans to change comment searching to be able to rank or search by rating?
So I could look at which of my comments had the most "+"'s, or see the highest rated comments from the last week, etc.

LOS ANGELES - California state lawmakers are considering an unusual idea to solve the state's huge budget shortfall: Tax pornography.
Impose a 25 percent tax on the production and sales of pornographic videos -- the vast majority of which are made in southern California.
It is likely that porn-makers would simply pass the cost along to consumers by making pornographic materials more expensive.
Many economists believe that pornography is an industry with inelastic demand -- meaning market conditions typically don't affect consumers' desire for the product. In other words, it is believed that most porn consumers would continue to buy regardless of how much it cost.

I dont know what porn tax is,
but I would know it when I saw it.

HILLARY RAISES ASSASSINATION ISSUE

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

Clearly Hillary was pointing out that in past years primaries went on longer, and 1968 was the horrible year that a crazed palestinian Sirhan Sirhan ended the political career of Robert F. Kennedy in California after that state's primary in June.

Why Hillary kissed Arafat's wife or anyone related to that inciter of violence a la Sirhan Sirhan, requires the willing suspension of disbelief.

Though I am an Obama supporter, I think all three sections were relatively trite. And most everyone knows about the big controversies...is someone not going to vote for someone because he or she couldn’t recall a magazine read at age 9 correctly?

I will be so glad when the general election officially starts–it seems like news networks are making up stuff and calling it “news” because, well, there really isn’t anything new to talk about.

HRC just articulated the reason why BHO will not ask her to join the ticket. He wasn't so worried about RFK's legacy as that of JFK.

I really don't believe that the GOP could put up an alternate candidate and replace all the office holders present at the convention in two months.

I think that such an event would hand the election to BHO or Hillary and firmly lock up the Congress in Democrat hands.

Careful! Nyarlathotep, or Obama as we currently know him, might show up.

And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet. Into the lands of civilisation came Nyarlathotep, swarthy, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal and combining them into instruments yet stranger. He spoke much of the sciences - of electricity and psychology - and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. Men advised one another to see Nyarlathotep, and shuddered. And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished; for the small hours were rent with the screams of a nightmare.

I'm up in Angel Fire, NM, at the site of a Vietnam Veteran's memorial. Interestingly, the memorial was built by a grieving father after his son's death. A private memorial. Made by a father's hands. Build with his own, private savings. And now run by the government.

A block down the road from the memorial, Vietnam vets annually gather in a make-shift tent city. Today the weather is frigid and horrible and ice crystals and slush make roads dangerous. Still, veterans, many on motorcycles, are here in huge numbers. Some of them may also be here because Red River, a town about ten miles away, hosts a concurrent gathering of motorcyclists -- sorta like Sturgis, but not as big.

American flags line the one road that winds through these mountains. Nearer to the memorial are POW and service flags. Even the tent city is surrounded by flags. Grey-bearded vets on motorcycles and in motor homes are gathering in spite of the horrible weather. On their bikes are flags.

I'm amazed by the strange and pleasant mingling of oldster motorcycle groups, veterans and some younger tough-lookin' guys. It reminds me of a poorly thought-out dinner party at which people who dislike each other are inexplicably seated next to each other -- but in this case, it works. Observing it, I think it works because the vets are so universally respected, particularly by the younger, more urban "toughs."

Just thought I'd share this.

Swiped from TigerHawk's blog, the best explanation yet I've seen why Hillary won't be Veep.

While I believe -- on little more than gut -- that Hillary Clinton would be a better president than Barack Obama, I also believe that Obama would be insane to let the Clintons -- they come as a pair -- into his campaign or administration in any way, shape, or form. Indeed, nothing would more completely prove that Obama lacks the judgment necessary to be president than selecting Hillary as his running mate. Whatever one thinks of the Clintons, this much is virtually incontestable: The Clintons are too powerful to control, too ambitious to control themselves, and too untrustworthy to appease.

He nailed it (them).

Hillary as VP is insanity for Obama. But I will give this to Hillary, where Obama exudes wimpiness, Hillary shows iron nerves and determination. She is betting the farm that she will make it to the convention and the "Clinton machine" will coerce enough delegates to vote her as the Democrat nominee. We have all seen the Clinton machine in action, and know how powerful it is. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hillary as the nominee for president and Obama her running mate. The only real opposition to Clinton is the media. 90 percent have thrown in for Obama and the bias is obvious to all Americans. Keep it up MSM, your day (downfall) is coming!

West Coast salmon fishing ban weighed

Federal fisheries managers on Friday took the initial step toward imposing what could be the strictest limits ever on West Coast salmon fishing amid a precipitous drop in fish returning to California's Sacramento Valley.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council unanimously adopted three options for sport and commercial fishing off the Pacific Coast, including an unprecedented complete shutdown of fishing off California and Oregon.

Or the strange suicide of one Irv Rubin while in prison.

"On 12 December 2001, JDL leader Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel, a member of the organization, were charged with planning a terror attack against the office of Arab-American Congressman Darrell Issa.[13] Authorities claimed that the two also planned attacks on the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, California. Rubin maintained that he was innocent. On 4 November 2002, at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, California, Rubin fell 18 feet to the concrete floor below. He was in a coma for 10 days before dying on November 13. The prison's official report was that he slashed his own neck before throwing himself over the railing.[14] Many have noted that this was an unusual method of committing suicide, and although the incident has been ruled a suicide, some of Rubin's supporters have alleged murder.[15][16]"

Ah well, but he was an extremist!

Indonesia: Muslims in arson attack on "unnecessary" [Protestant] church

Jakarta, May. 23, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Muslim militants assholes attacked a Protestant church in Citeko, Indonesia, on May 20, the AFP news agency reports.

Hundreds of Muslim fundamentalists maniacs joined in an effort to burn down the church, arguing that there was no need for a Protestant house of worship in the town, since all the still living village residents are Muslim c**ksuckers.

The way it should have been reported.

You shouldn't base your decision entirely on tax rates. You should base it on how convenient it is for you to live there, the neighborhood, and everything else you value, including whether you intend to use this as an investment property or a long term purchase to live there.

Besides, there are taxes besides property taxes to consider; there are sales and use taxes that will be imposed in and around Denver, which you'll pay more frequently than property taxes, and can add up over time as well. For example, take a look at the CDOR website and DR 1002 (or check specific areas with this tool), which provides sales and use tax rates.

Again, all that can drive you nuts.

Awful. Glad you are healing. (interesting story though)

I have got to keep a list of all these work related accidents that can happen, so the next time my wife asks me to do a chore around the house I can point out the dangers. Of course that presents another danger: an angry wife.

re: #384 lawhawk

Thanks, Lawhawk,

If I don't intend to stay longer than five years, I assume it is an investment. Since the house will be "high end," property taxes seem more important than other taxes ... right?

I'm also thinking of buying a second home in Texas, very small, declaring this as my primary residence and getting around income tax this way, though it may not work. Income comes from three states which does not include Texas.

Do I need an attorney? If so, what sort? I really can't make mistakes as the financial decisions and responsibilities are squarely on my shoulders now.

I worked the fire station that covered the Flying Jihad at I-5 and SR-18 in Federal Way, WA. Single busiest emergency address in the State the year I worked there.

At least half the calls where truckers who got rolled by the working girls.

re: #365 hermeneutics

Be careful when you compare mil rates. I have no idea how it works in CO, but here in CT the property taxes are based on the percentage of the assesed value by the mil rate.

EX: My mom owns a home that has 30% less sq. footage and 25% less land than mine but pays higher taxes in a neighboring town with less services. Her home is valued at $275K, mine at $350K. Her town assesses her home's value @ 90% of it's assessed value for tax purposes. My town assesses my home's value @ 60% of assessed value. Our mil rates are within a couple of points of each other but I pay lower taxes for more property with more services.

My point is, base your decision on the actual yearly taxes paid. I did and it worked out ok for me.

You, sir, have my deep respect for that -- I'm not at all sure I could manage such stamina, even though I was ticked that I wasn't allowed to do much after my cancer (abdominal) surgery. What little the doctors would let me do at first, Mr. Empire wouldn't, and it was that way till I was fully healed -- well, at least enough to rebel against the restrictions!

Revere Beach? My Dad's zt'l side was all in the Lynn, Marblehead and Swampscott area...we passed Revere Beach every Sunday, on the way to see them. I remember those awful fuel tanks....this was almost as bad as a part of NJ, which I think is worse re the tanks..the drivers in both states stink.

I used to love Lynn and Swampscott Beach when I was a kid. I have so many photos.

I am from Brighton and Newton..NHS class of '55.

If you plan well, you can escape federal income tax on both homes. Just make sure you make the home your principal residence for two years before you sell it. If you file a joint return, you can exclude up to half a million every two years.

Good grief! My oldest graduated from High School in 1981 also! The youngest of the 4 graduated in 1990.

I am not familiar with either beach, and went to sleepaway camp from age 7, for 8 weeks..we celebrated the end of WWII in NH. I can still remember...I may forget breakfast, but not that.

I am a mere 70...will be 71 on Inauguration Day, if I can survive this damned election.

I was in New Durham, NH...Camp Birch Hill, which now is probably a shopping center, a mall, or homes.

I just realized that at age 7, I was at Camp Rapputak in Fryeburg, ME! The following year a cousin and I went to Birch Hill.

Compare Electricity Prices in your area. Texas Electricity is deregulated; you have the right to choose Texas Electric Rates from among many Texas Electric Companies.

Shockingly sensible.
