Guardian Moonbat Beclowns Self

Wed, May 28, 2008 at 1:20:23 pm PDT

The American word for a person who exhibits this kind of behavior is “doofus.” Or tool. That works, too.

Security guards blocked the path of columnist and activist George Monbiot, who tried to make the arrest as Mr Bolton left the stage.

The former ambassador - a key advisor to President George W Bush who argued strongly in favour of invading Iraq - had been giving a talk on international relations to more than 600 people at the literary festival. Mr Monbiot was blocked by two heavily-built security guards at the end of the one-and-a-half hour appearance, before he could serve a “charge sheet” on him.

After being released by the guards the columnist - a fierce critic of the 2003 American-led invasion - made a dash through the rain-soaked tented village in a failed attempt to catch up with Mr Bolton. A crowd of about 20 protestors, one dressed in a latex George Bush mask, chanted “war criminal” as Mr Bolton was ushered away.

Mr Monbiot said moments later he was “disappointed” that he had been blocked from making the citizen’s arrest.

My prediction from the previous thread:

He, and several dozen witnesses gleeful to see Bolton "get his" will show up, security will be such that he re-thinks the effort, there will some chanting of anti-Bolton phrases, then everyone will adjourn to the coffeehouse to discuss their great victory in speaking truth to the power.

What do I win!?!

A spokesman for The Guardian, for which Mr Monbiot writes a regular column, said he was acting in a "personal capacity".

Maybe that should be "acting out a personal incapacity."

35 Honorary Yooper  Wed, May 28, 2008 1:32:07pm

Funny, moonbat is supposedly derived from Monboit.

LGF Dictionary:

moonbat - An unthinking or insane leftist — in other words, most modern leftists. Moonbat can also be used as an adjective, e.g. a moonbat professor. According to the Wikipedia entry for moonbat, the word was coined in 2002 by the Editor of Samizdata, Perry de Havilland, and was a variation on the name of radical British activist and columnist George Monbiot. Originally, the term “moonbat” was intended to be more politically neutral, and described wackos on the left and the right, but it quickly acquired its current usage of being applied almost exclusively to those on the left. The term also references the moon much in the same way that “lunatic” refers to the insanity-causing powers of the full moon (luna = moon). LGFers occasionally analyze the behavior patterns of various moonbat “species” as if they were actual animals, and even give them satirical Linnaean taxonomical names, such as moonbattus berkeleyensis. According to Charles: “Moonbat was originally coined by Perry at Samizdata, I believe. But LGF probably played a much bigger part in popularizing it.” The entry in the Samizdata glossary indicates that Perry originally coined the full phrase “barking moonbat”; apparently “moonbat” is just a subsequent shortened version of “barking moonbat,” rather than being a pre-existing term that was lengthened to barking moonbat. The term “moonbat” was first used by Charles on Little Green Footballs June 14, 2002.

He knew he would be thrown in jail and he ain't got the guts to deal with the people he would find in there. He just wanted the MSM to give his silly mug his 15 minutes of fame.

38 Render  Wed, May 28, 2008 1:33:22pm

If Monbiot comes to the US can an American "citizens arrest" him for his attempted assault on Bolton?

I already hold him in utter contempt for his defense of Saddam, Islamic terrorists, and the global warming scam.

Can Bolton sue him for libel, here or in Great Britain? Because libeling John Bolton is most certainly what Monbiot has done with his articles and his blog.

Monbiot should be arrested and charged for aiding and abetting Islamic terrorism and Saddam Hussain's regime.

Deposing Saddam was both the moral and correct thing to do and so is finishing off the remaining jihadists and other rabble.

Monbiot is a particularly good example of the moral inversion of his side, which also happens to be the side of the terrorists. In a sane world he would be serving time in prison before forced deportation.

However, Perry de Havilland disputes that Wiki entry, claiming his term "barking moonbat" originally had nothing to do with George Monbiot:

Note: Contrary to some speculation and entries on Wikipedia (which constantly change to reflect the prevailing wind of the day it seems), Perry de Havilland has stated it was was not originally a play on the last name of George Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian, as he was using the term long before he met or had even heard of Mr. Monbiot.

It is the happiest of coincidences, though.

He could see that the Maliki government has taken control of Basra. He could see that the Iraqi military is leading the fight in these places with the support of American troops,” McCain said.

McCain has visited Iraq eight times since the war began. Obama has been to Iraq once, in 2006, before the surge credited with allowing the oil-rich nation a chance to rebuild.

I'd like to know what the difference is between Mr Monboit and a propagandist working for the Vichy regime.

The left has thoroughly convinced itself of the fiction that the Iraq war is somehow "illegal."

How can any war be either legal or illegal when by definition it is a conflict between sovereign powers?

There is no overarching power or higher authority with the prerogative to declare which conflicts between nations are legitimate and which are not.

There are legitimate criticisms to be made about both the reasons for going to war and the way in which this war was prosecuted.

One of the biggest issues that is never addressed is that we actually won the war WITH Iraq, and are now fighting a separate war IN Iraq.

The fact that the left must resort to fairy tale notions about the "legality" of these wars shows just how little they have to say in way of honest criticism.

Actually it was Monbiot's name that inspired the word moonbat.

The pejorative political epithet "Moonbat" is often used by various political commentators to mock Monbiot.[29] The epithet was coined in 2002 by Perry de Havilland of Samizdata.net, a libertarian weblog. The claim that the term was originally used as a play on Monbiot's surname[30] has been denied by de Havilland - the full epithet being "barking moonbat". Seemingly, Monbiot himself does not mind.[31]

The Democratic Party is likely to meet rule-breaking Florida and Michigan halfway when it comes to seating their delegates at the national convention, two members of the rules committee said Wednesday.

A humour gem from the link list, thanks to distwalker :

Good afternoon and thank you Sue City, North Dakota.

As I have traveled around this country and visited 57 of these United States I have been thinking about the folks in some of those states in the middle.

Last year in Kansas tornadoes killed 10,000 people and destroyed whole cities. I was among the first to request Pashtu translators be sent to Kansas to help, but unfortunately they had all been sent to Iraq where they are too often killed in action by IEDs manufactured in Iran... fortunately Iran is not a threat.

As I look out on the crowd today, I see many of the fallen. Then there are those that fight and don’t die but often wind up as shell shocked basket cases like my uncle who locked himself in my typical, white racist grandmother’s attic. This was after he was among the first Americans to liberate Stalingrad or Auschwitz or something.

When he finally left the attic, he introduced my mother and father in Selma, Alabama in 1963. As a result of that meeting, I was born in 1961 and am now here to ask you to hope for and vote for honesty and accuracy in your leadership.

Thank you, and have a great morning.

re: #158 Ringo the Gringo

This is from his bio, funniest thing I've read all week.

During seven years of investigative journeys in Indonesia, Brazil and East Africa, he was shot at, beaten up by military police, shipwrecked and stung into a poisoned coma by hornets. He came back to work in Britain after being pronounced clinically dead in Lodwar General Hospital in north-western Kenya, having contracted cerebral malaria.

In Britain, he joined the roads protest movement. He was hospitalised by security guards, who drove a metal spike through his foot, smashing the middle bone. He helped to found The Land is Ours, which has occupied land all over the country, including 13 acres of prime real estate in Wandsworth belonging to the Guinness corporation and destined for a giant superstore. The protesters beat Guinness in court, built an eco-village and held onto the land for six months.

197 unrealizedviewpoint  Wed, May 28, 2008 2:34:53pm

George Monbiot has accomplished what few could. By his actions, writings and beliefs, he is responsible for the coining of a word. The word moonbat, in his honor, is used to describe the most laughed-at of the farthest-left, the rabid-dhimmi-dolts.

To excuse Monboit's failure, because he couldn't succeed against such brutes? (If they'd been lesser guards, he would have valiently pushed through and saved the world)

To make Monboit's danger seemed greater? (They could have keeeeled him!)

Mr Bolton said the war was legal, partly because Iraq had failed to comply with a key and binding UN resolution after the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

On the war's legality, he added: "This is not my personal opinion, this is the opinion of the entire legal apparatus of the US government."

What do you think was the reason, if any, for mentioning in the article that the guards were heavily-built?

To excuse Monboit's failure, because he couldn't succeed against such brutes? (If they'd been lesser guards, he would have valiently pushed through and saved the world)

To make Monboit's danger seemed greater? (They could have keeeeled him!)

An attempt to insult them by hinting they are fat?

Scrupulous journalistic adherence to detail and fact?

None?

Moonbats love to create danger where there is none. Their protests against the 'tyrant" Bush is a good example. They make it sound like their lives are in danger when they do it. How sad.

He could not understand why all the lefties were demonstrating against the US deposing Saddam, a bloody dictator.

He could not comprehend that the peace at all cost crowd was so disconnected from reality and wed to this ideology of peace at all cost that they would seek to protect a tyrant.

It's fun to go back and read old prognostications by pundits and experts, like this one:

A Bad Idea That Deserves a Try
by Jonathan Rauch from National Journal

President Bush, characteristically, is not leveling with the public about the risks he is taking with his plan to "surge" more U.S. forces into Iraq....

If we have to go into Sadr City"—a Shiite stronghold in Baghdad—"what will happen will be rather dramatic. The Badr Corps and the Jaish al-Mahdi [two major Shiite militias], which are not aligned, will align. And they'll also be able to align the vigilante groups, which are essentially protecting the neighborhoods and causing some mischief and havoc. They'll all get aligned, and we'll have to contend with about 70,000 people under arms in one of the heavily and most densely populated areas of Baghdad.

Read that again. Then repeat after me: Uh-oh.

So what actually happened? Well, the Badr Corp did not allign with the Mahdi Army, the Badr Corp broke relations with Iran, alligned with the Iraqi gov't, and went to war against the Mahdi Army. The Jaish al-Mahdi, or Mookie's Mahdi Army has been destroyed in Sadr City as it was in Basra.

Oh well, so much for expert prognostications. So what has our expert learned a year later... a little, but not too much:

What We Learned From the Surge

What I think I’ve learned from the surge is that Bush and McCain are right. The surge’s gains are real and should not be thrown away. But Democrats, Lugar, and other skeptics are also right. Bush and McCain have not figured out a way to build on the surge.

Read that again, and repeat after me: Wow! a liberal has admitted Bush was right!

Ok, but he qualifies that and says Bush didn't get everything right. He goes on about the lack of political reconciliation. You know, like what happens in a real functioning democracy like Washington. Ok, bad example. But here, he offers some sage advice to the nitwits in the Bush admin who didn't take his advice in the first place about the destined to fail Surge:

Instead of propping up the central government in Baghdad, federalize Iraq, decentralizing security and many other state functions.

Iraq is already one of the most decentralized countries in the world. His idea of strengthening Iraq is to make the central gov't even weaker?

Instead of pleading with Iraqis to share power, lock the United Nations, the neighbors, and the Iraqis in a room and broker a deal backed by international muscle and regional support.

Oh yeah, that'll work... get the UN to broker a deal with KSA, Iran, Jordan & Syria. Pure genius!

Instead of seeking a national political accommodation, stitch together a patchwork of local cease-fires and enforce them with U.S. and other peacekeeping forces.

What a minute, first you say the Surge has failed because there has been no political accommodation, and now you recommend don't bother with it anyway? And exactly who are these other "peacekeepers", the child-rapers from the UN?

Instead of unconditional engagement (the Bush-McCain approach) or unconditional disengagement (the Democrats’ preferred approach), go with conditional engagement, making continued U.S. support contingent on progress in Baghdad.

Empower the spoilers! Great idea.

OK, Jonathan, let's check back in a few months to see how your advice went over, shall we?

Bolton was Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security from his confirmation in 2001 until 2005 when he was recess appointed as US UN Ambassador.

As for the repeated bleats from moonbats about the administration and its intent and desire for war with Saddam, let's not ignore that the authorization for war was granted by a bi-partisan group of 77 senators, multiple independent and congressional investigations found no evidence of 'cooking the books for political purposes', and the words of many leading (now anti-war) democrats who since 1998 advocated regime change in Iraq because of Saddam's policies.

This is all just more attempts to revise history to match the world as they want it, not how it is or was. Isn't it interesting that the opposition to the war started prior to the downturn in Iraq and coincided with the need to run against Bush in the 2004 Presidential election?

They are also fundamentally misanthropists. They are infatuated with the ideal of the "People," but real people can never live up to that ideal. Real people are imperfect; the state must configure society in such a way as to bring about the perfection of humanity, and often the easiest way of bringing that about, particularly when the ruling elites are impatient is by killing those who don't live up to the abstraction. So we breed a new nobility of "blood and soil," but since that will take a while we kill the Untermensch in the meantime; we will create the "new socialist man," but that will take a few centuries so we'll kill Kulaks and starve Ukrainians to move the process along. And the list goes on.

Beneath the language of the "new" and the all the utopian rhetoric lurks a deep hatred of mankind; behind the promises of bread and land and equality and harmony stands the axe.

A very interesting piece at Hot Air about a recent report on progress in Iraq, by H R McMaster, who lead the counter-insurgency operation in Tal Afar
Brig. Gen. H.R. McMaster on progress in Iraq

Pay particular attention in his ten-point list to his explanation of the cascade effect between Al Qaeda, the Shiite militias, and popular support among Iraqis. The left has always strained to minimize AQI’s role in Iraq in order to delegitimize the war: Sometimes that takes the form of arguing that they’re not “real” Al Qaeda like Osama’s gang in Pakistan, other times it means emphasizing that they’re only a small part of the wider Sunni insurgency. McMaster’s point is that, small or not, their attacks on Shiites are what created the need for militias to protect Shiite neighborhoods, which in turn boosted the militias’ popularity, which in turn gave Iran an opportunity to cultivate the militias to its own end. Take away Al Qaeda and you take away the security pretext, which leaves the militias with nothing to do but prey on the Shiite locals, which destroys their popularity, which leaves Iran hamstrung.

Former Bush press secretary Snow, sick, cancels Ohio speech
6 hours ago

ASHLAND, Ohio (AP) — Former White House press secretary Tony Snow, diagnosed with cancer three years ago, canceled a speaking appearance at Ohio's Ashland University because of an unspecified illness, the university announced Wednesday.

The university said Snow's doctors have told him he cannot travel, and that Snow will be replaced by the president's brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, at Thursday's fundraising dinner for the Ashbrook Scholar program.

Snow, 52, joined CNN as a conservative commentator in April. He became White House press secretary in April 2006 and served until last August.

In 2005, Snow had his colon removed and was diagnosed with cancer. In March 2007, he underwent surgery to remove a growth in his abdominal area. Doctors determined it was a recurrence of his cancer.

Ashland had no details on Snow's illness and CNN's public relations department had no immediate comment Wednesday.

That's the top level group. The followers are scared to death of liberty. The prefer the bondage of the promise to be taken care of by the state.

I don't listen to Boortz often. Job, he's on during the day, etc. But one time I turned it on, and the first thing out of his mouth was that Americans SAY they want to be free, but most don't truly mean it.

They would never give up social security. Or a host of other programs. They say they are for freedom until you mention the exact responsibility for their own lives they are going to have to take. And they'd rather the state check their hairstylist gives a good perm or pick up their garbage.

re: #347 yochanan

one of the main differences between fascist strong states and commie strong states is the the victim class is offen different and the methods are offen somewhat difference.

there are similarities such as the 'end justifies the means' and both have a anti semitic belief system.

And both are totalitarian in their belief that there is no room for the private, and that all our actions, thoughts, and beliefs should be monitored and regulated by the state. And both completely devalue the individual in favor of the collectivity, however that is defined.

I also firmly believe that in both cases the "nation," "race," or "class" that they identify as the focal point of the ideology only exists in some kind of future abstract condition; Lenin is pretty clear that Communism, and hence the dictatorship of the proletariat, cannot exist so long as "bourgeois" thinking remains -- the presence of bourgeois consciousness anywhere threatens the purity of the proletariat. So in the meantime, power must rest with a vanguard elite which will exercise total control until that time comes. Likewise, "Aryans" really didn't exist yet -- there were people with Aryan characteristics, but the master race would have to be bred, and that process would take centuries; the conquest of the east and destruction or enslavement of the Untermensch was a precondition. In both cases, the violence against the dissident races or classes was justified on the basis of the promise of a distant future.

Freedom carries with it responsibility, and people flee from that.

What people generally mean when they say they want freedom is license, the sort of freedom to stick whatever they want in their mouths and say bad words. Y'know, the sort of toddler-like freedoms which the leftists proclaim as the most fundamental human rights.

One of the hardest things to get across to students is the connection between law and liberty, the the two are closely connected. To live outside of law is not to be free; it is to be subject to the whim of other men. A free society is a society of laws. That is what separated the Jews from the other peoples of the ancient world; it is also what, as Herodotus says, separated the Greeks from the barbarians.

If you're not free, you're not responsible, and if you're not responsible, you're not free.

The founders considered that Liberty as they descibed was for the virtuous, responsible and dutiful person.
Virtuous, a person moral enough not to require external force to do the right thing.
Responsible, accepting of the consequence of his own action both positive and negative.
Dutiful, taking care of family, contributing to community and society and not being a burden.

re: #363 right wing zephyr

We did at lunch.

First, I'd rather wait until the book comes out, because too often the summaries provided to me of books/speeches/studies by the media show an exact opposite conclusion of overall point of the piece in question.

Secondly, the main thing they seem to be pulling out is that Bush lied to get us into the Iraq War. Except Mcclellum didn't step into Ari's job until July of 2003, several months after the case was being made for, the Congressional vote for, and the beginning of the Iraq War.

Third, if the book is everything nasty that it is purported to be, why do people believe one person telling them what they want to believe about how it "really" was, and yet won't believe the dozens or even hundreds who say he is wrong? (rhetorical) (see also: one dubious vet who swears he killed puppies versus half a million troops)

IIRC the Homestead act for the upper midwest was 120 acres, hold it for something like 3 years and the homesteader got the deed.

TX up to MT was more range land and larger grants.

Exactly, which is why anarchists fall on the left of the left-right scale, though if you look at it as a measure of state power versus individual liberty, anarchy should be far right, since it calls for zero state power.

But the left-right scale is really only measuring individual liberty (i.e., freedom/responsiblity), and without a small government to protect my rights from thug-rule, it is just the same as if I have none.

McClellan also took issue with the book by former Bush White House counter-terrorism czar Richard Clarke, “Against All Enemies: Inside America’s War on Terror,” on March 22, 2004:
McCLELLAN: Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he’s raising these grave concerns that he claims he had. And I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is bringing this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. He has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book. ...

John Bolton escapes citizen's arrest at Hay Festival

Security guards blocked the path of columnist and activist George Monbiot, who tried to make the arrest as Mr Bolton left the stage.

The former ambassador - a key advisor to President George W Bush who argued strongly in favour of invading Iraq - had been giving a talk on international relations to more than 600 people at the literary festival.

Mr Monbiot was blocked by two heavily-built security guards at the end of the one-and-a-half hour appearance, before he could serve a "charge sheet" on him.
