What's Important to Google? Answer: Mountain Climbing

Thu, May 29, 2008 at 8:09:20 am PDT

Google couldn’t be bothered to recognize Memorial Day (even though they’ve been confronted about it every year for at least 3 years), but today they have a nice little logo commemorating the climbing of Mount Everest.

It's important, because Hillary was named after this. Or something.

Sir Edmund Hillary dodged Serbian sniper fire in order to climb Mt. Everest, travel back in time, and allow Hillary's parents to name her after the famed conqueror of Everest.

Hey Obama

I'm still waiting on the details of that "6 months in the attic" story.

Did Typical White Granny chase him up there with a rolling pin?

I wonder if this is Google's way of supporting the good Senator Clinton, since everyone knows she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary...

It's a joke- Edmund Hillary climbed Everest with Tenzing Norgay- so people are saying recognizing the anniversary of this is a way of supporting Hillary Clinton

Are they holding little Soviet sickles in their explorer hands?

22 blair21088  Thu, May 29, 2008 8:14:47am

It's fairly obvious that they consider memorial day to be some right wing fantasy and that Jihadi videos on youtube are just poor people acting out after being suppressed by the evil Republicans. Google will give in to China and censor search results but they won't even put an American Flag on their homepage.

Hillary C. claimed that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first (white guy) up Everest. Problem is, that feat happened after Hillary C. had already been born; Sir Edmund was a beekeeper in New Zealand at the time.

I've got no problem honoring mountain climbing. Going up Everest was a great feat, especially given the available technology at the time. But it sure would be nice if they'd observe Memorial Day, too. (That said, this ranks fairly low on my Outrage List.)

Rupert Murdoch predicts landslide for Democrats

CARLSBAD, California (Reuters) - News Corp Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch on Wednesday predicted a Democratic landslide in the U.S. presidential election against a gloomy economic backdrop over the next 18 months.

But on the same page we have this.

GDP growth revised higher, jobless claims up

WASHINGTON (Reuters)- The U.S. economy grew at a revised 0.9 percent annual rate in the first quarter, slightly better than previously thought because of lower demand for foreign goods and services and a pickup in non-residential building, the Commerce Department said on Thursday.

Are we in a recession or aren't we.

while I admire google as a success story, from what it started out as, a small search engine that filled a internet need, don't ever expect them to be even remotely pro-American/USA. Though they owe part of their success to being based in America, they do not consider themselves an American company, they are to cool, in their own minds, to be that. They consider themselves a global company, as well they might, being the reaches of the internet. But as stated in one of the above posts they are more anti American than not, so as to appeal to the rest of the world. and don't forget one of the co founders is a russian immigrant to the USA.

I don't. I think they think they are representative of the population at large. Typical liberal elite attitude....

They think they are vastly superior to the population at large.
They also believe they care more about the people than anyone, including the people themselves.
They know what is good for the unwashed masses.
They only want to help us.
Too bad we're so stupid.

I stopped using Google long ago, screw ‘em.

I’d like to share a boycott I’ve been on for 16 years but never could
get anyone to join me.
I use to travel extensively and noticed that Newspapers in all city’s
always advertised Stripper Clubs and Escort service’s on their Sports section of the paper. I had just had a couple of kids and believed that young boy’s interested in sports would be looking in that part of a paper following their favorite games and hero’s. I didn’t want kid’s exposed to the suggestive ad’s. So I called the Editor of my paper and some others asking that they move these ad’s to the Business section of the paper.
My reasoning was that kids wouldn’t be reading that (business) section of the paper but that if they were that advanced in years to be thinking about business they might be intelligent enough to ignore it. I didn’t ask them to “stop” the advertising and thus lose revenue, I just asked them to move the ad’s to a safer part of the paper. I'm not against naked women. In fact, I wish most of them were always nude for me to go gaga over. I just don't want children exposed to some "Adult-stuff" before they are ready for it.

I was politely told to stick it. (bastards)

So I stopped buying the paper and began a one-man boycott. So far it's still a one man boycott.

I have had extensive email correspondence with a friend who is a writer at Google. While I cannot set forth his identity or those emails, I can convey their arguments.

He is a formerly self-identified libertarian, who is utterly perplexed by Google's being labeled anything other than a $100 billion + company in the internet business. He points out that Google is the official provider of services for the Republican party (Microsoft services the Dems) and that they have established practices he believes to be content neutral. Furthermore, he assures me that Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google's billionaire founders, are very much pro-American and that Google doodles have been created and displayed for Veteran's Day.

I responded by saying that Sergey and Larry struck me as extremely bright and idealistic. Those sorts of people tend to hire other bright idealistic people. Idealism in SF takes on a very different tone than idealism in, let's say, Mobile Alabama. Idealists on the left coast live on the left side of the political spectrum so the doodle chiefs were probably liberal.

He responded by saying Mountain View is not SF and that the people there were much more moderate.

Then he proceeded to call Bush an idiot, liar and something short of a murderer. I figure that because he stopped short of calling him a murderer, he is considered a moderate in Mountain View.

Buy a PC system and Google is already loaded on it, whether ya wanted it or not. Buy a blank zip drive and ... Google is already on it. While you are searching thru Google for some information on Enlightenment Thought during the 81th century, Google checks YOU out - without your knowledge.

Given that Google seems to spend quite a bit of it's time on collecting information, and has announced ambitions to collect a great deal more on individuals, what is going on here?

140 josephjcox  Thu, May 29, 2008 9:12:16am

Next year, we should have a one-day Google boycott on Memorial day if they don't have a logo :)

141 eaglewingz08  Thu, May 29, 2008 9:17:46am

I am sure that the Googlenuts were quite perplexed how to celebrate this much more important date than the banal and xenophobic and imperialistic Decoration Day a/k/a Memorial Day. I think the run ups to the final version had Sir Edmund Hillary holding an Olympic Torch, Hillary Clinton, dressed as the Statue of Liberty, and Tenzin Norgay carrying a Free Tibet Flag and Banner. But that had to be scrapped once the Chinese overlords came out banning Sharon Stone for her 'karma' statements. Because like good wussie libs, Google won't take stands against people who could actually affect their bottom lines. China could ban the net search engine, and that would not be good 'business' for Google.
So the final nondescript 'celebration' only has Sir Edmund and his guide at the top of the world.
This reminds me of an off color joke about Sir Edmund, so stop if you might be offended:

One afternoon when Sir Edmund was a teenager, he was in his chambers, when his Nanny unexpectedly entered and found Sir Edmund pleasuring himself. When the Nanny exclaimed, 'Sir Edmund why are you doing that?', Sir Edmund matter of factly stated,
"Because it's there!".

Google is one of the most successful companies in this country. Fortune magazine rated it the *1 company to work for. But the fact that they can't acknowledge and pay tribute to the countless men and women who gave their very lives so they could enjoy all their success, but will take the time to come-up with a cute little logo to pay tribute to something as trivial as Mountain Climbing... FUCK EM'! Ya' I said it! FUCK You GOOGLE! Every last one of you useful idiots can just cease to exist as far as I'm concerned. And let's not forget that Google owns You Tube! You can post a video about blowing-up American soldiers but anti-muslim videos don't last very long.
I'm mad as Hell... and I'm not going to take it anymore!

145 SunCat  Thu, May 29, 2008 9:52:09am

Google says they want to keep their page humorous and light-hearted. Why why not be serious every so often like Comedian Robin Williams? How light-hearted is Mount Everest, haven't people died climbing it?

146 leereyno  Thu, May 29, 2008 9:55:15am

re: #35 Occasional Reader

I've got no problem honoring mountain climbing. Going up Everest was a great feat, especially given the available technology at the time. But it sure would be nice if they'd observe Memorial Day, too. (That said, this ranks fairly low on my Outrage List.)

Will they observe the day Jim Whittaker climbed Everest? He was the first American to do so. BTW, my mom knew the Whittaker twins as a kid.

I dressed his granddaughter up in WW2 Army Air Corps uniform.Photos actually taken inside the local memorial building on monday. It was windy outside so we went to the memorial building so her grandpa could hold the flag up for the background.Probably took 15 minutes total to make my little tribute.Definitely better than googles tribute.

Okay, I don't see this anywhere else in the comments, so maybe the problem is unique to me. Charles, I view LGF through RSS; seems instead of the 'google logo' I'm getting an actual 'goats*' image. I now you're not hotlinking the google image (checked the address), so any idea how that could happen?

Just throwing this out there; truly odd to see the 'goats*' image pop up.

162 jackjones  Thu, May 29, 2008 12:06:04pm

Let us not forget that Google has a cute little banner to help celebrate communist "mayday." Its time to let these money hoarding scum know that we think they are a bunch of traitors and anti-american gangsters.

I'm sure that in the time it took to make that stupid mountain climbing art, they could have made like 5 good memorial day banners.
