Rest in peace Tim. Thoughts and prayer to his family. Didn't agree with his politics, but he made covering elections more entertaining - especially when he reached for that dry erase board.

Even though his biasewas obviously to the left, he was a hard-hitting reporter who got deep into the truth that many he interviewed were trying to hide.

Tom Brokaw is on MSNBC now saying that Tim Russert is dead. So it's true.

Sad news. The last person on NBC who I looked forward to watching. AN era has ended, I think.

Sad sad day.

36 newsjunkie_ky  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 12:43:45pm

His Dad, Big Russ, is still living. As Tim pointed out to terry macaullife (sp) on 'Meet the Press' after terry said he was in Heaven watching them.

37 really grumpy big dog Johnson  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 12:43:57pm

I haven't watched Russert's showcase show for years, but I watched it hundreds of times over the years, and Russert was one of the most professional media folk that could be found.

McCain said his grandfather dropped dead the day he returned home from war.

My husband's grandfather was serving a mission for our church in Missouri, with his wife. The mission president came by to extend an official release. Grandma went upstairs to keep packing. Grandpa sat in his chair, went to sleep, and never woke up.

Agree with his politics or not, one cannot refute that Russert was a man of talent and integrity. I'd love to--but with a broken toe, the doctor says no. :(

I have mixed feelings about Tim Russert. I grieve for his family, and I know he could be a good journalist and ask hard questions. But so often NBC would use him as a news source when they should have spoken to someone directly involved with the news report in question (I guess it's cheaper for a news broadcast to ask a fellow journalist than to get a hard news source). And then he got mixed up in the Valerie Plame nonsense.

But I wish him and his family no ill will, and hope that his family is able to stand tall over the next few days and months.

No, his dad is still around - he's in his late 80s.

And Fathers Day is Sunday...tragic. Tim Russert's only child, a son, just graduated from Boston College, and they were in Italy to celebrate, and had just returned.

I cannot imagine Meet the Press without him. I wish they would just end the program, but they won't.

A GIANT loss for TV journalism. Russert was definitely one of the few remaining good guys who took the job seriously -- smart, dedicated, driven by journalism's real principles, not partisan hype.

You never would have known from watching MTP or viewing him as a moderator that he once worked for the Dems.

Sad, too, to think the big counterbalance to wads like Olbermann and Matthews at NBC is now gone.

RIP, Tim.

They think throwing money at it always equals greater success. Need better schools? Money. Need better research? Money. Need better health? Money. Although money certainly plays a significant role, they seem to believe that it reaches a point where a certain amount of money can guarantee no more failure.

And most importantly, it must be collective money (government programs.) No doubt the person supposing that his money should have purchased him healthcare to prevent this is really advocating socialized medicine.

It must be comforting to have that simple of mindset. No matter the problem, the solution is "More Socialism!"

Thanks! I;m actually sick of smoking. A bit afraid of not having anything to do with my hands, though. I've decided to clean my house really, really well. It's pretty spotless now, but I don't care. Besides, I figure the garage will take a couple of days anyway.

Being sick of the habit is half the battle. I quit cold turkey a year and a half ago when I literally started gagging on the damn things. Keep it up, within no time you will realize it is the best thing you ever did for yourself.

They are, of course, ecstatic at the thought of Keith Olbermann taking over his spot already. WTF. Idiots.

Tim Russert was a decent and fair man. He had his biases, like everyone else, but he would not sell his integrity to advance them. He was one of the last real examplars of the "free press," as the Founding Fathers intended it, in the major media.

I'll miss Tim in my living room every Sunday morning. A lightning quick, fair political mind with the demeanor and charm of your dad's favorite fishing buddy. Particularly sad passage from the Times blog:

[Tom Brokaw] said Mr. Russert had just moved his father, who is in his late 80s, from one facility to another in Buffalo. He said he loved his family, his Catholic faith, his country, politics, the Buffalo Bills, the New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals.

“This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice,” Mr. Brokaw said.

After Mr. Brokaw made the announcement, the network switched to Brian Williams, the anchor of the NBC News, who is reporting from Afghanistan this week. Mr. Williams broke down as he tried to describe what the loss meant to his network family.

Case fatality rate of all heart attacks is around 30% (depends on the population you are looking at).

I don't know if Russert smoked or not, but many diabetics get nerve damage from their diabetes, and don't feel pain from heart attacks.

285 jill e  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 1:40:49pm

Neat story:

The highlight for Russert, a devout Catholic, was a papal Mass in the Vatican’s Pauline Chapel and a private audience with the pope after the Mass. During the audience, Russert’s wife, Maureen, who was pregnant with their son, Luke, asked the Pope to bless the baby. He did so, and said, “When your baby is born, bring him back for another blessing.”

The following year, the Russerts returned to Rome with baby Luke. Thanks to Archbishop Foley, they got a place in the first row at the audience. Luke was wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with John Paul’s personal motto, Totus Tuus.

The Pope said, “Very nice, very, very nice,” and took the baby, and kissed him. A treasured memento of the Russert family shows Tim Russert proudly holding his son as the Pope blesses them.

That's how it is in that business. Like many others, if you want to advance, someone above you has to leave to create a spot.

Olberman actually *is* a smoker (cigars).

Personally I don't care who replaces Russert; no matter who it is, I'm not going to be watching them.

Realistically, it probably won't be Olbermann, he's too controversial and viewed as partisan (rightly).

I have just found out about TR. I was so encouraged to see the respect from those who post here.
I feel like I've lost a trusted friend.
A few years ago, I wrote to Tim Russert, a man I have admired a long, long time. I thanked him for his coverage of the whole issue of the growing epidemic of autism. In addition, I told him about my dad, a WWII vet. Mr. Russert, wrote me back the very nicest letter thanking ME for the story about my dad. This was after his book about Big Russ. I am so incredibly shocked and SAD. whoever said up thread that we have lost an ADULT, you were absolutely right. A fair, kind, generous adult who will be missed by so many people--he had friends on all sides. Jeez. Why am I crying? Like a baby.

They find themselves a wonderful internet community over at Kos because when they preach that garbage to the general public, someone will insult and mock them. Of course, the kos kiddie will go and blog about his "xenophobic and racist" detractors who ridiculed him in pubic once he gets back to the safety of his parent's basement.

re: #286 Cognito

Maybe I'm putting too much faith in the head fellows at NBC News. But no, I don't believe Olbermann will be taking over Russert's chair at Meet the Press.

They're totally dissimilar. Olbermann is all flash and anger and teeth. Russert -- and therefore MtP -- were far, far more thoughtful.

No, I don't think Olbermann would take his place on MTP, but it is an opportunity to shuffle the talking heads (ie. everyone moves up one spot in the food chain).

I'm betting on Chrissy Matthews or Dork Gregory. Either way, MTP is going to nose dive in the ratings.

No one will be able to replace him.

OT: WTF?
Look what happens when you search Google for "Jew"

Google

An explanation of our search results.

If you recently used Google to search for the word "Jew," you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We'd like to explain why you're seeing these results when you conduct this search.

A site's ranking in Google's search results relies heavily on computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page's relevance to a given query. Sometimes subtleties of language cause anomalies to appear that cannot be predicted. A search for "Jew" brings up one such unexpected result.

If you use Google to search for "Judaism," "Jewish" or "Jewish people," the results are informative and relevant. So why is a search for "Jew" different? One reason is that the word "Jew" is often used in an anti-Semitic context. Jewish organizations are more likely to use the word "Jewish" when talking about members of their faith. The word has become somewhat charged linguistically, as noted on websites devoted to Jewish topics such as these:

Condolences to Tim Russert's family.

My Dad had Type II Diabetes too, and was born with a heart murmur. He also had several medical conditions gout, HBP kidney stones, finally started taking care of himself when he developed the diabetes and Dr talked to him about his heart. He had several "silent" heart attacks, and finally died of a massive one when he was 60. Glad to have had him longer than anyone thought we would. He was a great example of work ethic, started in the newspaper business when he was 14 as a printer's devil and learned everything he could about that side of business, then when he got lead poisoning from one of his jobs, he persevered and became a great salesman.

Here's a tribute to Tim from Chris Cillizza, a very good young political reporter at The Washington Post. There's also a link to an interview w/ Tim done for the Post's "On Faith" series.

Many other tributes popping up on political blogs and elsewhere. Here's what Marc Ambinder had to say. The tributes from Pres. Bush, McCain, and Obama are also at this site.

An unbelievable shock; this city will all but shut down over the next few days, so vital was he to its voice. I did not know him personally, but I know many people who did and they are devastated; passionate about politics and his integrity, he nurtured so many careers and is responsible for so many innovations in modern political journalism. He was, for everything that people may they know about about him, much more of a creature of Buffalo than a denizen of Washington. Above all, an unbelievable father to Luke and a loyal, devoted husband to Maureen Orth. A life marvelously well lived.

I had it both ways...expected and out of the blue, 15 days apart. IMHO? Either way is the worst. No matter how much preparation you have? It is still pain beyond description.

And in this case, an 88 year old father has to bury a son. And a 21 year old son has to bury a father...right near Fathers Day.

No offense, but there is a lot that someone in Russert's position could have done that would not have embraced ethics and integrity. Russert did not do that. Even those who disagree with his politics admit that Russert embraced and demonstrated ethics, integrity, and professionalism in his field.

I might have misread the 'tone' in your post, but this is a person who through is role in journalism touched many, influenced many, and did so with a quiet professionalism. It would be nice if everyone took that approach to their jobs and with the people they have contact with.

Keep telling the folks you love that you love them.

I was at the gym this morning and saw an older guy in incredibly buff (old school) or cut (new school) shape. It impressed me, so I actually walked up to him and started asking him some questions. He was 64 years old, and started an exercize program when he turned
55. If there is life there is always hope. Put down that donut and eat a salad!

That's very inspiring. My overweight, Type II diabetic husband has made a huge effort lately -- gym membership, frequent testing of blood sugar, taking his meds, eating right, quitting smoking, all in the last 6 weeks. He's got me and our daughter going to the gym as well, which has become a bonding experience for us (plus I've lost 6 lbs.). I couldn't agree more.

Whilst I didn't like him necessarily, I respected him because he had a genuine enthusiasm for the political process, which superceded his Democratic background (he was on Senator Moynihan's staff). I respected him, especially when compared to his other colleagues on the rancid NBC. There's little incentive to watch NBC now for me.

Remember his little chalkboard where he feverishly totalled the changing electoral college tallies, in the 2000/2004 campaigns? I will actually miss him for this year's later Presidential race.

If it weren't for the fact that their opinion shows are (about) the only ones on television that have anyone to the right of Joe Lieberman, I would consider Fox News to be worthy of covering news stories involving missing privileged teenagers, and that's about it. re: #383 NY Nana

This is for you, sweet NY Nana:
A gift for the children of the world from the Moon-Angel
(a passage from the children's classic 'The Garden Behind the Moon' by
Howard Pyle)

'Under his arm the Moon-Angel carried a box of iron, shut and locked,
but with a golden key in the keyhole. "Children," said he, "Here is a
box for you to keep. In it is the greatest joy and the greatest sorrow
in the world. Keep it closed, and you will always be happy as you now
are. But if you open it, sorrow will come upon you." Then he went away,
leaving the box behind him.

Seven days passed, and then one day the woman said to the man, "I
wonder what there can be in that box? The tall man said that in it was
the greatest joy in the world." "He said that the greatest sorrow in the
world was in it also," said the man "But," said the woman, "If we open
it we will behold the greatest joy in the world." "And we will let the
greatest sorrow out into the world," said the man.

"Now, what would you have done, David?" said the old woman of the
cliff. David spoke up boldly (you must remember he was a man now). "I
would have opened the box," said he, "For surely it is worth suffering
the greatest sorrow for the sake of the greatest joy." '

Some 90% of the MSM is not just liberal, but tending left-liberal. To maintain your independence, as Tim Russert did, in this day and age was truly a feat worth praising.

most likely but when you put your working pants on (I get to wear jeans) do you reach the minds of millions each day? Can you influence the way a million people look at a situation? To those who are telling me that they prefer it when it's sudden...

I have to disagree, completely. Maybe for those who've had a full life, but to those who are still in their prime, or haven't even reached it yet, a sudden, unexpected death is horrible. Tim Russert was in the middle of doing a voice over when he, to put it bluntly, dropped dead. That's horrible. The man was still, to my knowledge, outwardly vibrant and healthy. He was still doing his job, which I assume he enjoyed doing. While it may be nice that he didn't have to suffer from a lengthy illness, I think it would have been better all around for him to have reached a point where he felt his life was complete enough. Maybe he did, I can't speak for him, but I would hate to go in the middle of something like that.

And if you want me to add my personal touch as to why a sudden loss is the worst: Long ago I lost my sister, and her two children, in a car accident. A different circumstance, to be sure, but it was still an "out of the blue", sudden loss. All three of them still had plenty of life in them, plenty yet to accomplish, but that life was snuffed out ahead of its time.

To die of a heart attack so suddenly like that may seem "peaceful", but it's still about as painful and traumatic experience for a family as can be.

My father was 43, standing on the carport talking to my
mother. He had just had a complete physical and nothing
was wrong with him. Didn't smoke or drink and wasn't over
weight. Doc said he was dead when he hit the ground. My
grandfather on the other hand smoked 3 packs of Kools
a day, died in his sleep when he was 87.

MY aunt/godmother also smoked 3 packs a day & died in her sleep in her mid eighties of natural causes, unrelated to smoking.
Still I would encorage anybody trying to quit to stay with it.

That's actually a point I wanted to make. The major difference between conservative sites and "leftist" sites. The first 25 comments were all heart-felt and sympathetic. I scanned for a negative one and barely found it. Same on hotair.com, one negative comment about someone who died.

Look at the comments from the left on Heston, Reagan or any other figures from the right. Hateful bile.

That's the problem with anecdotal evidence (not saying Mike in Georgia was trying to provide that. What Mike experienced was heart-freezingly awful, and my sympathy goes out to him.... =( )

Still, when 10 people cross a street wearing blinders, of course a certain number will always make it across alive. Doesn't make it a good idea, though. Best thing we all might do is cut our odds.

I have no real strong convictions re the death of Tim Russert, one way or the other. I don't know if he was such a saint as is now porteyaed. I refer to John donne's comment re "Europe". I do regret his death.
As to the cause, genetics, DMII, CMS, etc., there are numerous factors that must be considered.
However, the MSM is spending a lot of time commiserating over ONE OF THEIR OWN. I wish the four soldiers, who may have been able to contribute a lot to this country, who were killed with my division, 10th MTN LI, received half as much courage and attention.
Russert died on the job. May God have mercy on his soul.

most likely but when you put your working pants on (I get to wear jeans) do you reach the minds of millions each day? Can you influence the way a million people look at a situation? To have that kind of power and not abuse it takes a strong person. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

That's a good point, Eowyn2. But I don't think Russert gave that a lot of thought. I vaguely recall an interview with Russert as the guest and the guy was humble as all get out. It was basically "Hey, I just do my job the best I can. I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to do what I do". He was a regular guy! I don't think he would want praise for doing the job he was paid to do. O'reilly, on the other hand... :D

Keep in mind folks the lines of John Donne:

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every
man is a piece of the continent, a part of the
main. If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory
were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or
of thine own were: any man's death diminishes
me, because I am involved in mankind, and
therefore never send to know for whom the bells
tolls; it tolls for thee."

Many may have disliked Mr. Russert for his views, but his passing diminishes all of us. He had a wife and children and they are grieving tonight. Pray for them.

Good wrap-up. I don't know much about Harwood/Tood (I don't want much television), but though Gregory is too partisan, and loves to make fun of President Bush more than other "serious" journalists do on-air (remember his "impression" on Leno?), might stand a chance.

Yeah ... I forgot about Father's Day Sunday.

He really, really loved and almost worshiped 'Big Russ'. I imagine it will be really tough on him. You know his father has to be so proud of him. One thing could be worse, choosing to remove a dying parent from life support. It really hurts.

My Dad had Ca of the pancreas, and I had to talk to my Mum and help her to understand that keeping my Dad on life support would only prolong his suffering, as she had power of attorney...my Mum did something she never did before; she slapped me across the face. I was 45 at the time ...I am an RN (now retired, BTW). After a few hours, my Mum realized that it was the right thing to do.

We took her home, as she had had another heart attack a month earlier, and my husband and I and 3 of our kids went back to the hospital to say goodby; 1 other was in university..my Dad was in a semi-comatose condition, but seemed to know we were there. We had to leave, to go back to NY from Boston, to prepare our clothes, etc.

My Dad died at 1:27 AM...I was called. We left here about 6 AM to be with my Mum ASAP

And also notify the oldest to get to Boston . He was awake when I called, in Buffalo, as he had a funny feeling. He flew into Logan not that long after we got there in the AM, and my husband picked him up. The other 3 kids and I stayed with my Mum.

I would never want anyone to go through this, and then, 15 days later, to lose their Mum...or vice versa.

I honestly cannot remember the drive back to Boston...too numb at the time.

No matter how old we are, losing a parent is unbearable, but the loss of a child? My daughter in alw and son lost a twin daughter, a micro-preemie, at 36 hours of age, an ironic number, as in Judaism, any number divisible by 18 (Chai=life) is a good number.

My now 8 year old granddaughter knows..she realized it. And she breaks down in tears about it. The kids? All we can do is hug them tight when they mention it, and let them talk...never in front of my granddaughter.

I agree, it is worse for parent to lose a child, my oldest brother and Sister in law lost a daughter and a son to Cystic Fibrosis. The first, a daughter was sudden and when we found out it ran in our families. It spurred us along with other families to sponsor a house so that parents would have a place to stay when children were in hospital or children could stay if they were from out of town and just needed to see Dr. Their son was the first poster child for our efforts, and he inspired many people by the time he died at age 22.

"It's just a shame. Tim was a regular guy with that perpetual smile he wore naturally all the time. He loved life and got everything he could out of it. Whether it was at dinner here in Florida while his son was taking golf lessons, or on the set of Meet The Press, Tim was always the same with me: genuine. re: #546 Moody LeoMy condolences. Losing children, especially to a congenital disorder, is heartbreaking. My prayers go out to you.

558 Tilly  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:16:53pm

Sorry to double post but you are so right. My father was a very accomplished litigator (yes I am bias but he really was enthralling defense medical malpractice lawyer and even those who hated would tell you he was a Race Horse Haynes).

He died of a brain aneurysm at 50 on his way to depose an expert witness.

He and my mother had been married since they were 17 and she knew no other life than being by his side. She died 4 years later at 53 of a massive heart attack.

The loss was devastating beyond words for my brother and I but I thank God for taking them with a lightning strike so they did not suffer.

The repercussions from their loss are still taking place today... Those that are left behind carry the burdens that might not ever be seen.

562 justacanuck  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:30:56pm

What a massive loss this is. Tim's MTP is something I never miss here on Sunday morning.

Journalists of his credibility and fairness are a very rare breed and the hole he leaves on the scene is huge. My only hope is that the utter buffoons in the field might find some humility and leave the field. Yes KO, I'm talking to you.

Major condolences from Canada.

563 Jefiner  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:32:00pm

Rest in peace, Tim--you will be sorely missed.

I didn't always agree with him, but appreciated his hard work and genuine enthusiasm. And I still think his best interview was with VP Cheney, right after 9/11. There was no Democrat, Republican, journalist or politico--just Americans telling their story about that most awful day.

564 justacanuck  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:33:50pm

re: #516 vbspurs

In my blogpost, I mention how some bloggers are already wondering who his Meet The Press successor will be.

The shortlist includes Matthews, Olbermann, Gregory, Mitchell, John Harwood or Chuck Todd. I wonder if Katie Couric might be coaxed back to her old network...

*puke*

I understand that Olby is now leading the coverage of Tim's passing on MSNBC. What a disgusting outrage.

565 arizona9  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:35:06pm

I was shocked and saddened to hear of this awful news.

After the shock--another thought registered--this is the end of NBC news. Russert was the only thing keeping that network and MSNBC from going completely over the cliff. Like others have said, he was the closest thing to objective in network news. With his passing, and Brokaw's semi retirement, it's over.

I really would have liked to watch his collegues comment on his passing on MSNBC but was horrified to see Olbermann's repulsive mug doing anchor duties. Hell, we didn't even have a day to mourn before they thrust that douchebag front and center. It really is repulsive that Keith, the glaring symbol, of everything that is wrong at NBC and MSNBC, was chosen for that duty today. It is a slap in Tim's face, imo, since you know Russert had to be as disgusted as everyone else with the bluring of the line between commentary and straight news which Keith represented. Russert didn't have the luxury of voicing that opinion like Brokaw did(giving Keithy the smackdown recently)-but he had to have felt the same. So, to have Olbermann anchoring today's coverage is simply unforgivable and only underscores the massive gulf between the two.

re: #549 NY Nana

Could you please look up the word 'empathy' in the dictionary?

I empathise as much as I can. The fact is, I didn't know the man. I never talked with him like I am with you. I would be more shaken up if a lizard whom I've communicated with right here had passed away. It's not a lack of empathy, it a lack of two-way familiarity.

I will reveal a weakness of mine though. I absolutely despise celebrity worship. Unless it's Frank Sinatra. :D

re: #565 arizona9

The only thing I regret more than Tim's passing is the thought of the Olberdunce's glee about a position that has opened up. You know that there was no love lost between Russert and the big "O". Tim viewed the Olberdunce the way we do and now he has passed the big "O" willl seize the opportunity. Yes, his ego is just that big. IMHO, Tim Russert kept NBC above CBS in the ratings. Now that "Little Russ" has passed, just what does NBC have to offer?

568 marjoriemoon  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 4:57:08pm

My family always watched Meet the Press when I was a child and I've never missed a Sunday with Tim over the last 10 years. He felt like a friend to me and I'm shocked to hear of this horrible news.

It's like an end of an era with so few journalists if any who could match his hard hitting, no nonsense, unbaised style. My heartfelt condolences to his family, NBC and the rest of us who will have to endure the news without him. Rest in peace, dear Tim.

Nontheless, the comments stand.
Couage under fire versus courage at the microphone.

573 GeeWiz  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 5:17:01pm

I think we all should keep in mind that he died before his father, just after a trip celebrating his son's college graduation and to add more pain, 2 days before Father's Day. As a son and a father, I am very saddened by the pain visited upon his family when one considers the importance he placed on a father's influence on one's life. Once again, my prayers go out to his family, especially to his son and Dad.

RIP, Mr. R, and prayers to his poor family. He and his white board will always be part of my Election 2000 memories.

Keith O. has on Chris Matthews right now, and the prick (Matthews) actually had the gall to turn this thing into an anti-Iraq War statement, also managing to obliquely insult Russert along the way. He mentioned that he had a conversation about Russert about "how can this war possibly be justified", and Russert responded that if Iraq had a nuke, that had to be dealt with. Matthews then said that Russert truly represented America, in that "they knew how to sell this war, they knew which button to push", insinuating that only truly stupid, easily scared people, of course, could ever support this war.

Disgusting. Russert deserves much better than that.

576 ethanxxx  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 5:31:11pm

I can honestly say that Mr. Russert was my favorite of all the Top Journalists. Meet the Press was the only news show, outside of Fox, that I watched on a regular basis. He was the epitome of Fairness. From the comments that I have seen and read today, the feeling that we have lost a great American Icon is universal. Sundays will never be the same.

577 GeeWiz  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 5:40:34pm

Addendum to my post @573.

After the shock of the news of TR's passing wore off, I wondered just who was delegated to pass this news to "Big Russ" two days before Father's Day? I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I know I could never do it. Never mind passing to this terrible news to his son and wife. The timing could not have been worse for someone that valued a father in their life as Tim R. did.

R.I.P., Tim. May your passing instill your values in others.

578 HR Guy  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 5:41:41pm

That's it, my hubby is 6'3", overweight and has been having all kinds of health problems lately. I'm MAKING him go get a physical! He's only a few years younger than Tim Russert. And to answer a question from a previous poster on whether or not it's better to go fast or slow I'll tell you from personally observing my fathers passing and my father-in-law's passing it's better to go fast than slow.

I'm putting up a picture of Tim next to our treadmill.

584 offendi  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 5:58:52pm

Olberman will now be even more out of control, because Russert will not be around to make Olberman temper himself in order to have a shot at succeeding Russert. This will be a positive for Republicans this fall because Olberman is on course to make a comment or two about McCain that will be totally over the line and inexcusable, and reflect badly on the entire leftist media.

I was wondering the same thing earlier. Especially since he was a Type II diabetic. I heard that they are doing a post-mortem, which should give the answer to the cause of death. He cannot be replaced, and that smile?

I sadly suspect that NBC will appoint some hack to sit in his chair.

May he rest in peace.

re: #575 ladyk

How can you stand to watch him?

Happily Colmes is not on tonight, and Hannity and a female reporter are eulogizing Tim Russert so nicely. And there is sadness, respect, and also sincere caring.

I can't really believe yet that he is gone. I wonder when his wife and son will be back? They must be more than half way here, I assume.

591 ladyk  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 6:16:22pm

#590

Because Russert looks even better than he was by comparison. Self-punishment, I guess, because it really drives home the fact that the MSM is now a big leap farther down the toilet without Russert's fairness.

Bob Costas is on now. Bob Costas makes everything better. Well, almost. I didn't now that Russert was on the board at Cooperstown.

592 Boogberg  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 6:18:52pm

re: #396 Athos

No offense, but there is a lot that someone in Russert's position could have done that would not have embraced ethics and integrity. Russert did not do that. Even those who disagree with his politics admit that Russert embraced and demonstrated ethics, integrity, and professionalism in his field.

I might have misread the 'tone' in your post, but this is a person who through is role in journalism touched many, influenced many, and did so with a quiet professionalism. It would be nice if everyone took that approach to their jobs and with the people they have contact with.

I missed your comment, Athos. Sorry.

I have to disagree. You're attributing qualities to Russert that journalists are expected to have. I see no reason to give Russert any kind of special consideration for his work just because some (or even most) of his colleagues are fucking unethical scumbags.

597 tokyobk  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 6:30:43pm

I will miss him too.

Some people have been wondering about the cause and only his doctors know for sure, but if he did indeed have type II diabetes, and even not, he was obviously in a high body-fat percentage category.

Every time I go back to the States I am struck by how large people are and wonder if they know the risks of belly fat or is it the sheer abundance that the free market creates wealth and mild obesity will always go together. Actually, now the Japanese are getting literally rich and fat as well. On the plus side, young men and women grow tall, on the minus, "metabolic syndrome," or a huge midriff which leads to diabetes and heart problems are also getting prevalent.

Anyway, I could tell from things he said that he loved his family above all and they must be suffering terribly this Father`s Day.

For those who want the reference, here is the world`s guru on keeping your fat % down which is a great step to preventing diabetes and maintaining good heart health, google Tom Venuto, who is the author of "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle." There are others but he is a bodybuilder who writes in normal language to regular people about the body and how it makes fat and muscle.

I have no financial gain but not sure the protocal for linking paid-for-sites, so I wont.

Holy crap! I just now read that Tim Russert died at work today! You know what? He was probably the LAST TV journalist left with any integrity worth mentioning. There are still a couple left, but he was the one with the highest profile AND the highest ethics of any around today.

RIP, Tim Russert. What a shame.

No weight loss to speak of, but the clothes aren't as tight and the BP is getting down to the normal range. Tim Russert "got it". I suspect that he was the only one at NBC news that "got It". I see nothing but bad things coming from his passing for NBC. At LGF, we have spoken about TR's complaints about the new heirs to NBC's plan (ie: the Olberdunce).

604 carbon footprint  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 7:01:57pm

I can not begin to explain it but this has hit me extremely hard. It is the most shocking reaction that took me by total surprise. I feel such guilt because in my heart I despised him at times because of his politics. However, he was always fair. I have learned a great lesson from this. I mourn and weep tonight for a great man, a great father and a fellow American who was taken from our world way too soon. MTP will never be the same. Go with God Tim. You have left your impact on a man that did not know you and was, at least, suspect of you because of your politics. In the end, politics be damned. You will be missed.

He gave a hard time to conservatives, but an equally hard time to those on the left, so you knew that even when he was skewering someone you liked, he would do the same to your worst nightmares.

Unfortunately with Russert's untimely passing, so goes the last shred of journalistic integrity at NBC News. It will be interesting (maybe not) to see what kind of a zoo that place turns into without his influence. Like him or not, he wasn't one of the crazies.

Rest in Peace.
