More Science Labs: Blogospheric Linkfluence Charted

Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 5:37:37 pm PDT

Yes, it’s another science thread, a hybrid post if you will, as web technology visualizes the connections among political blogs: PresidentialWatch08 - Map. (Takes a little while to load.)

Interesting to see who's on the fringes, and I see some of our other friends in the mix too. Way to go, lawhawk!

There was a "game" in the older versions of Damn Small Linux that created a 3D space visualization of the OS as a constellation resembling stars and planets that you could fly around in.

It looked a lot the image above.

Interesting too to look at the color of the links as well as the end points. E.g., the relationship of brussels journal to LGF vs VDH to LGF.

Some blogs have almost all outgoing links, and of course most major news sites have mostly inbound links. LGF appears to have a few more inbound links than many political blogs.

Awesome map. I found it too, it it right next to Michelle Malkin, To the right of it. Cemter of the map, just in to the right. It is a pink spot. If you click in the area ans then scroll in w/ mouse wheel, it zooms in.

KOS is a rather big blue dot (with yellow surround) a little left of center.

Looking around on the left side, I ran across the burnt orange report,
([Link: www.burntorangereport.com...] which notes the sharp rise in applications for concealed gun permits in Texas, and draws a strange conclusion about it: Apparently people are scared, so they're getting concealed carry permits. Who's at fault?
"So much for the Republicans making us feel safe while leading the state."

78 charles_martel  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 6:46:36pm

I get a bad link.

Same reason gun show attendance is high, and purchases are high. Folks are getting licensed and stocked up in case worst happens in a BHO admin. It's one thing to restrict new licenses and purchases. It's quite another to confiscate legally held firearms and license already in the hands of citizens.

For that very reason I'm making a number of purchases.

I don't think it's a fear of armed conflict. Just that with BHO and a (D) congress, firearms restrictions are almost certain. Regardless of the SCOTUS decision on the DC case (looks like it will be out Wed.), new laws will be enacted, and license and certain classes of weapons will be restricted. It will then take time to test the new laws in court, meanwhile the laws will stand.

I noticed the same thing.

Most of the news sites are colored yellow (...and fitting when you think of the yellow journalism that is put forth as 'truth-ish') for 'infopit'. Its widely known that most journalists have a heavy leftward tilt as do their publications.

If you run the magnification slider (near top left) about halfway to the right (or more) all the sites appear to get labeled with their URLs. Then with mouse you can navigate by grabbing and dragging.

87 Bear  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 7:28:55pm

Look what Al Gore did.

88 Kaitian868  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 7:50:37pm

Oh this is classy. Andrew Sullivan is listed as one of the "conservative" in the mapping. I'm pretty sure everyone knows that guy took a HUGE left several years back.

89 K~Bob  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 8:49:08pm

As noted already, the site has some serious problems in deriving utility from the linkification factor, versus the political "tone" of the listed sites. While it's a cute toy, it's not very informative. The "discoverthenetworks" site's toy is less pretty, but far more informative.
The most significant problem in both, however, is the reliance on a Left-versus-Right "spectrum." It's too damn misleading.

Hey, assuming this was done by bots mining the site, can we get our spot on the plot to move? Everybody: post "Love Obama" 10 times in a comment right now, after which we'll recheck the plot.

Why should I bother to type "Love Obama?" Should we actually Love Obama? If so, I would Love Obama even more if I knew more about this Obama I'm supposedly Loving. Perhaps I need to Change my outlook to Love Obama. I do Hope that Change is possible, but not the Change that Obama Hopes will take place. I would certainly Love Obama more if he would Change some of his leftist policies, but there seems to be little Hope for that.

I suppose I will simply be left with my Audacity to Hope that Obama can Change so I can Love him more.

91 yma o hyd  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 11:36:38pm

Thanks, thats just soooo cool!

92 Buster Bunny  Mon, Jun 23, 2008 11:56:32pm

To Love Obama or not to Love Obama,

That is the Love Obama Question.

Whether tis nobler to have once to Love Obama or Love Obama Girl, whether the righteousness of his deeds will make you Love Obama more for the possibility of change, there is a time and a place to Love Obama.

Now is not the time to Love Obama.

When is the corrent time to Love Obama?

When all the handwritten signs have gone home, when there is no material with the words Love Obama left.

Do I Love Obama?

Heck no.

[Link: www.damaverick.com...]

94 nocoolname  Tue, Jun 24, 2008 1:03:31am

There's a search function for sites to the left of the map, so you don't have to mouse your way 'round.

Other notes:
#38, 84: While iht is yellow, nytimes is a liberal infopit, as is the latimes.

#88: andrewsullivan.com is listed as conservative,
BUT
andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com is liberal,
(which is close to historical).

Generally: typing "I love Obama" won't change anything; it's really more a function of the incoming and outgoing links.
