For the M-F crowd.

A Nigerian couple who immigrated to Austin a decade ago thought they had finally made it in America. On May 7, they closed on their first home in the States, buying a $283,000 Cedar Park house that had been headed for foreclosure.

It seemed like a good deal to Bobo and Joy Dickson. They did everything right, they thought. They got a mortgage lender, signed the papers, had the title put in their name .

But on May 14, they came home from work at their janitorial services company to find that all their furniture, family heirlooms, personal photos, clothes, even their daughter's piggybank, had disappeared.

After filing a theft report with the Cedar Park Police Department, the Dicksons were given the news. In a mix-up over whether the home was still facing foreclosure, Field Asset Services was hired to drill open the doors and seize the belongings.

Good Evening Lizards! It was hot in the Very Far Western Suburbs of Chicagoland today.

Kid wanted to watch Apocalypse Now. So, I watched it with him, to point out the difference between movies and reality. THE HORROR What a g-d awful movie! It was worse the second time around.

re: #15 rawmuse

It was the Redux version. The Robert Duvall scene was the only one I enjoyed. I thought it dragged and was depressing and did a diservice to our troops. Coppola could have drawn the same drama from a ficticious war. Of course, he couldn't have gotten the "American created the Vietcong" line in if he did that.

I do have to admit the actual movie making was very good (the acting, art direction etc).

Thomas Moore From Wikipedia

Thomas Moore (May 28, 1779 – February 25, 1852) was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, now best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and the The Last Rose of Summer.

Just wondering who he was.

Regarding "Apocalpyse Now" and "Full Metal Jackets" I have had many discussions as to whether these are War movies, or anti-war movies. In a sense, every war movie is an anti-war movie, or at least, all the good ones are. If you had asked Coppolla and Kubrick (now deceased) I do not think that they would not own up to their movies being anti-war.

Having said that, some recent war movies really stink. As a matter of fact, most of them do.

One of my favorite war movies is "Glory". That one is truly outstanding.

I personally like Platoon Leader. Not as good as the book, but not an anti-us or anti-military film. Siege of Firebase Gloria was outstanding also. It was aided by the fact that R. Lee Ermey was in the unit that arrived to find what had happened at Gloria. (Also had the largest cast of any Viet Nam film, something like a thousand extras.)

63 NomadOfNorad  Mon, Jun 30, 2008 9:47:52pm

To repeat my post from a couple of threads back:

Texas PC Repair Now Requires PI License

From its Texas Rangers to its enthusiastic take on the death penalty, the Lone Star State has long been known for its aggressive stance on law enforcement. Thanks to a strange new law, it's a sting that may soon be felt by a number of the state's computer-repair people.

A recently passed law requires that Texas computer-repair technicians have a private-investigator license, according to a story posted by a Dallas-Fort Worth CW affiliate.

In order to obtain said license, technicians must receive a criminal justice degree or participate in a three-year apprenticeship. Those shops that refuse to participate will be forced to shut down. Violators of the new law can be hit with a $4,000 dollar fine and up to a year in jail, penalties that apply to customers who seek out their services.

Some of the area's larger companies already employee technicians with PI licenses, a fact which generally doesn't apply to small computer repair shops.

(Emphasis mine)

WTF are they thinking in Texas right now?!?!? Who dreamed up this monumentally stupid law and how the frak did it get passed?!?!?

How we shiver with affright
At the melancholy menace of theit tone

Beats the frell outta me! I dunno... maybe they figured there was potential privacy-violation by peecee repairmen possibly poking around in the contents of people's hard drives? But if that was the case, this is massive, massive, massive overkill!

I have a feeling it's going to backfire on Texas. Like, they'll find soon they'll have a huge shortage of computer repair people, because they've all moved to neighboring states!

Horror films have to be the stupidest of them all. I see no reason to sit through a minute of that nonsense. Chick flicks? forget it. I'd rather chew on a ball of aluminum foil.

Platoon Leader
I don't think it was ever officially released on DVD so Netflix won't have it but there do seem to be some bootlegs out there

I'm in Palatine, IL. Celebrating that fact that tomorrow, Cook county will officially have the highest sales tax in the nation. 10% = woo hoo.

Are surrounding counties any better? Then again, with gas prices being what they are, maybe that's not a practical option, except on really BIG stuff.

We're pretty close to another county where the tax is "only" 8%, IIRC. The people in the city proper are pretty much stuck paying it though.

Slasher types suck. I go for the monsters. Love the original Universal monsters. Give me a good twist on an old monster and I'm in heaven. (I've seen a little of Cloverfield and wonder WTF, it seems scary, the little creatures are terrifying, but the big one...Godzilla was scarier looking)

Edgar Allen Poe's BELLS trump Thomas Moore's little ding-a-ling:

"Hear the tolling of the bells-
Iron bells!
What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!
In the silence of the night,
How we shiver with affright
At the melancholy menace of theit tone
."

(Did Thomas inspire Edgar?)

re: #97 Neo Con since 9-11 Huh, neverheard of that movie. Have seen "Platoon" and also, IMHO, the BEST of the Vietnam War Movies, "Go Tell The Spartans".
Also like "We Were Soldiers Once"
BUT I GOTTA SAY AGAIN, the BEST Vietnam War movie was "Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam" (produced by HBO). Got a lot of critical praise, but since it's based on the book of the same name, and the "acting" isn't really - it's edited from real video footage with about 80+ well known Hollywood actors reading the letters over the video scenes, it surely didn't get wide distribution and frankly I thought the book was vastly superior.

And it's late and I don't want to start something now; let me just say that his depiction of the cowardice of US Chopper pilots in the last action scene was a fucking disgrace.
And I suppose I woulda liked it a teeny bit more if he - probably prodded by the studio - didn't say it was The Vietnam War Movie. Bullshit - it was loosley based on Stone's own one year tour of duty in Vietnam as a platoon leader.
That war took 11 years, was fought in what we sorta arbitrarily divided into 4 different commands and depending on where you were and WHEN you were there, Platoon could look like fiction to you.
It sure as hell would have looked like fiction to Burt Lancaster in "Go Tell The Spartans".

WHOA! I don't know which VFW you hang out at but I think Platoon has so much wrong with it I don't know where to begin!

I'm not going to base it upon the last scene, where Willem Dafoe's character was running in no one direction after Tom Beringer's character had said he was dead.

My point was that there were those who believed in what we were doing, and those who disagreed. That was my only point. BTW, I believe we did the right thing in Nam.

Some of the area's larger companies already employee technicians with PI licenses, a fact which generally doesn't apply to small computer repair shops.

That's your reason right there. The big boys don't like the competition from the mom and pops [actually the teenager and friends] and want to legislate them away.

Obama's preached today on patriotism. The best defense is a good offense. I think he is feeling defensive, but he is being offensive. He won't go on the offensive against terrorists, though. He will meet with them without condition. Just to talk. A little tete-a-tete between powerful warlords. Obama is just a warlord out of Chicago, a tribal cesspool of corruption. Yet he is arrogant enough to lecture the nation (or is the world his audience?) on patriotism.

Obama is a scallywag. Bush was naive about democracy in the Muslim world and made a lot of mistakes, but he has backbone, responded after 9/11, kept the US safe from further terrorist attacks and at least tried to do something about the resurgence of Islamic jihad that started well before he came into office. Obama has no backbone. He will capitulate to Islamists, signaling that the US is weak and wishes to appease jihadis. He will accelerate the vicious hold that political correctness has on our freedom to think and say and act as we please, and thereby encourage and embolden CAIR and its ilk to further its agenda of establishing sharia.

We'll see less integration and more separation. Obama is a divider and not a uniter. This is one of the ironies of his candidacy. The messenger of change and racial/religious/political unity has played every divisive card in the book. Obama. This man is a chameleon who wants power. Once he gets power, what is there? The only other thing we know is that his voting record in the Illinois senate and the US senate is stock-standard ultraliberal. He might as well be called McGovern, although he has a much more shark-like desire for power and will do and say anything - and sell out anybody - for power. Barack Hussein Obama McGovern Mugabe.

I'm not saying it was a fact by fact truism of what Nam was like, but I've not met one infantry vet who served who said the portrayals of those who served were untrue. Maybe exaggerated? Yes. But out and out untruths? No. In the end, the movie did portray us as the good guys. Conflicted? Yes. Maybe I'm too young to understand where you're coming from.

re: #202 rawmuse Yeah, they sure can and I DO understand that; what bothered me wasn't his depiction of Berenger and Dafoe, but lots of other "little" matters which he made up out of wholecloth. And those little matters mean a lot to a LOT of Vietnam Vets.

No one is misleading me. I know he alone caused the deaths of thousands of our soldiers, because he made them feel that what we were doing was worthless, and caused them to question their commanders. I detest the piece of shit.

I don't disagree that he's done horrible things, I'm just saying that there's way too much hate in the world, and that as a society we should get away from ever allowing ourselves to hate anyone, regardless of reason. It is way too easy for hatred to trump reason, and too often we can't tell the difference between those that might genuinely deserve hate and those that don't. Too often we can't tell the difference between those that have done really awful things and those that have merely had a large number of awful lies told about them. Bush Derangement Syndrome being a major, major example.

I'm just saying it's a very, very bad habit to readily allow one's self to hate, and to make our decisions about things first on hate and then on reason second... because often we don't get to reason because we're focussed too much on the hate, and thereby lies danger. Here there be dragons!

"Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord, and I will repay in kind."

In short, let the Infallible and All-Knowing One decide people's ultimate fate in eternity. We have too many problems and shortcomings ourselves to begin to make such decisions with our own, totally fallible and easily mislead minds.

250 zombie  Mon, Jun 30, 2008 10:40:41pm

I'm on Cloud Nine.

After nearly a solid month-and-a-half of pounding away at it, I just finally finished answering all my email!

What a relief! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I'm literally dazed. I hardly know what to do!

The scenario:

I had 2,500 unanswered emails in my in-box. These emails were the ones that had been shunted aside because they were the ones that would take some effort to answer/deal with. No spams. No personal emails, No easy emails. No emails that merited a one-word reply. Every single one was one of those doozies.

People submitting photos to me. People submitting entire photo essays to me. People pointing out serious errors in some past zombietime report. Death threats. Offers to translate this or that report into language X, Y or Z. Requests for interviews. 5,000-word-long treatises meant as updates to past reports. Evidence of new fauxtography scandals. Some guy who actually received a medal from the IDF for translating my Reuters Photo Fraud essay into Hebrew. Someone who went to elementary school with Hillary and had photos of her as a young child. A bank manager with a Muslim name in South Africa who informed me that I need to take the Mo Archive offline or "the US will pay the consequences." Desperate pleas for help. A moonbat who threatened to sue me if I didn't change the caption on my photo of him. Offers to meet me, go out on dates. Requests to use photos or videos for TV shows or documentaries. And on and on and on it went. 2,500 emails like this. Dating back to April, 2005, which is when I just couldn't handle the sheer volume any more. Each email, I felt a responsibility to answer. So I set myself a single-minded goal to plow through them all. And to answer, deal with, cope with, implement, or somehow process each email.

Took me a month and a half, working every day. But I did it! Done! In-box total: 0.

And I expect to be writing another comment exactly like this one in 2011.

It's about failure to properly notify people of an eviction. It is about coming home and finding your property vanished. It is about improper handling of seized property. Lack of documentation. Theft of property by employees. Lack of investigation by the police and the DA's office.

This was not the only incident of wrong doing by this same company.

It is also about LEGAL immigrants who came here and WORKED their asses off and finally achieved for the American Dream!

It is also about a skunk of a company that has not one ounce of honor...

When told of Nipper's initial comments to the police, Hance responded Friday: "A month and a half into it, the silence is especially frustrating because if they (Field Assets) would have understood 'the big deal' from the beginning, and told the Dicksons where their belongings had been taken that night, this entire thing could have been avoided."

And it is about treasures, temporal and spiritual...

The Dicksons said some of their belongings were irreplaceable: the trunk of traditional African wedding attire and jewelry that had been passed along to Joy when she became Bobo's bride; the original scripts that Joy, a screenwriter, had created. Then there was a dollar bill that was tucked inside Grace's piggybank.

The bill was sentimental because Grace wanted a laptop computer and offered to give the dollar to her mother, wondering if it would help in the purchase. Joy said she was touched and wrote on the bill: "Trust God for more." Then she slipped the dollar back into the piggybank. Later, they were able to purchase that laptop.

Sorry for this PS - I really do have to get to sleep now - but couldn't resist this one:
"In short, let the Infallible and All-Knowing One decide people's ultimate fate in eternity. We have too many problems and shortcomings ourselves to begin to make such decisions with our own, totally fallible and easily mislead minds."
Methinks you just abrogated our entire criminal justice system with those lines. Here we let a jury of truly fallible people, filled with their own shortcomngs, prejudice and educations decide the fate of one or more people in lots of situations where SOCIETY deems it necessary at least in this life.
And I'm quite comfortable with that, since I don't know of any better system of criminal justice.
And with that, I'm outta here.

Goodnight all y'all.

I just spent the past hour doing battle with my anti virus. It decided to turn itself off, and I couldn't get it back on.

Finally convinced it that it was 2008, not 2007... then it was happy and began working again. Yay!

But that deleted my ad block add-on, so I had to reinstall that... plus go and re-subscribe to the ad block lists. Sigh.

Gotta switch to safe mode with networking to do a deep scan for viruses... I think the anti-virus was off since Saturday when I unplugged the pc 'cause of thunderstorms. Yikes!

Actually it was a silly little change. Ever since the early days of AOL and the onset of "User ID" I've been known there and elsewhere as LeePro (capital L, capital P) — directly related to my actual name. Some sites, however, won't accept such nuance, and automatically change it to all lower case. When I registered here, I had no idea Charles allowed caps, spaces, and other characters, so I just registered as leepro.

Then I started noticing nics like "BlueCanuck," "NomadOfNorad," "Slumbering Behemoth," and even Maximu§!

Wrote to Charles. Begged. Voila! LeePro!

At that, you can also have spaces in your nick. Not that I'm complaining or anything. (I've got too many posts under my belt with this account, so it'd be pointless to go back to that other one, anyway... :-)
