Stupid Fauxtoshop of the Day

Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 5:22:51 pm PDT

Sheesh. How embarrassing for Fox News to get busted by moonbat attack site Media Matters with stupid Photoshopped pictures of New York Times reporters: Fox News airs altered photos of NY Times reporters.

I know, I saw this on a design forum yesterday. Pathetic. Whoever let this albatross out of the coop should be fired.

2 Milk Toast Intolerant  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 5:24:34pm

No one at Fox News caught that?!

Sad. Just sad. I expected better.

There's another one too. I'll see if I can find it.

The lunatics at digg.com are extremely excited about this right now.

What a lame thing to do. By Fox, I mean. I'm happy that there's one single solitary TV network that's not enslaved to mindless left-wing orthodoxy, but I wish it were an organization that's a little more respectable than FNC.

This kind of joke makes either side of the political spectrum look really petty, cheap, and vindictive in my opinion. Remember what they did to Condi? I don't think this sort of thing is ever cool, except maybe on FARK. FARK is FARK.

15 shibumi  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 5:30:34pm

I wish this surprised me, but it doesn't. Newscorp, the parent company of Fox, is fat with Saudi money. And... Rupert has thrown his weight behind the whole global warming fiasco. So their credibility does have it's limitations at times.

No, it's a clear photoshop -- the nose is HUGE, and if it was a squeezed image the nose would be narrower.

Morons, whoever's responsible for this. They deserve the O'Reilly Pinhead award. Let's see if he has the balls to do it.

I don't watch TV much, but I have noticed over the last couple of years FOX on the Internet no longer parrots the AP, many of their headlines news shows a definate conservative bias. I have noticed a lot of stories on corruption in the UN that goes unreported by the other MSM. Yes I consider FOX to be MSM because they currently are the leader in cable news ratings. As seen by other comments, FOX was juvenile in posting the altered image, I still think it was pretty funny though....Fox does not balance out the huge liberal MSM bias....

Fox has been in a slow decline for a few years now. The question is: Is this due to bad managerial decisions and a big dose of "we can do no wrong" cockiness, or has Murdoch decided to take things in a different direction? They used to be hard news with a cheeky tabloid flavor, and now they seem to be tabloid first, and news second.

It's bad media unless it's a cartoon or entertainment. These guys are news reporters letting their boundaries vanish a bit. Something I think happens often in the kos/huffpo world. In the segment they should make the caricature clear and make it the story. If not they lose some or a lot of credibility.

There is always bad media I dislike, but I usually think I am in the minority and just ignore it.

1. MichellMalkins caricatures of Hilary I found unwelcomed when she herself doesn't like to be caricatured meanly.

2. On KRLA where I listen to Medved and Hewitt there is a frequent advertiser that is so obnoxious I just turn the show off at that point. For a long while there it was just 18 minutes of Hugh Hewit, then done. the point here is that maybe the reporters thought they were doing something ok, but couldn't tell the difference due to an airhead quality. Turn Fox off if they can't get it together.

In today's world where the media exaggerates the importance of content people can get wrapped up in a lot of false notions and drift into those fascist states.

Unless it's a joke I would prefer they be straight with me at Fox.

109 Ringo the Gringo  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 6:18:38pm

The only use I have for TV news is in the case of an important breaking news story or something live such as a debate.

112 hazzyday  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 6:24:27pm

I watched it. The reporters forgot to include the /sarc tag. All sorts of bad things can happen if they do something terrible like that. I file it under a poor attempt at subliminal revenge. Just for ease of viewing I take most things seriously unless that /sarc tag is there. Skimming too much info. Maybe I should slow done a bit.

118 bill-tb  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:08:32pm

Doesn't it look like they just resized to fit a screen area? Clumsy, but I doubt it was done intentionally. I have seen a lot of dumb 'perspective' shots on all channels.

But the worst is when they use a totally in appropriate gun to show violence, like at a crime scene when a knife was used to kill.

119 William  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:11:44pm

Need to see a video clip of the segment before passing judgment.

"Fox and Friends" is a morning show skewed more as entertainment than "news" and the pictures appear as an obvious joke, especially this one:

[Link: mediamatters.org...]

This is more "funtography" than "fauxtography" and if the kooks as MediaMatters hate it, all the better.

The video clip is on the Media Matters site, in the linked article.

Someone at Fox screwed up. Whomever was supposed to check the photos dropped the ball, and whomever did the editing should be fired. That kind of behavior is inexcusable.

re: #89 Killian Bundy

re: #80 Omni

There was a third photoshopped pic following the face shots showing one of their faces superimposed on a poodle and the other guy walking him.

Sure, maybe they could have clued in the viewer a little better about the first two shots that were shown for perhaps 5 seconds, but I guess they assumed the joke would be understood in context with the third most obvious photoshop job.

Well, I'll be damned, you're right, FOX Alters Pics of Reporters.

/Media Matters bust busted

Agreed, just watched the edited clip at the above link, and it was obviously a joke.

122 PloniAlmoni  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:31:22pm

Fox and Friends is entertainment with a lot of news as well. There is absolutely no excuse for those images to have made it to the broadcast. We should all be as outraged at this as when the moonbats do it.

Look, FoxNews is better than these other nutcase networks, but it doesn't mean they're perfect, or even close. They have insane Jew-hater Pat Buchanan on the air all the time, they defended Mel Gibson like no one else when he got busted drunk driving and spouting anti-Jewish nonsense and conspiracy theories, and Fox News now aired obvious photoshopped images to make people they don't like look bad. They've lost more credibility in my book, and you won't catch me making excuses for them just because I watch them more than the other stations. It's unacceptable what they did and hopefully they will restore some public trust after they fire the person responsible for letting this happen and tell us what they plan to do to make sure this never happends again.

Just watched the clip, and this is yet another case of much ado about nothing from MediaMatters.

Come on, we're talking about goofy-looking NY Times reporters here, as well as superimposing their heads on a dog, complete with barking sound effects.  You're "outraged" by this?  It was obviously a joke, and if MediaMatters and the NY Times hate it, all the better.

File under unbelievable.

Muslims feel like 'Jews of Europe'
Britain's first Muslim minister has attacked the growing culture of hostility against Muslims in the United Kingdom, saying that many feel targeted like "the Jews of Europe".

Yes, that would be more like the Jews of Saudi Arabia.

125 hermeneutics  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:48:35pm

Why the heck did Fox lower themselves to the lefty low standard of fauxography? They gained nothing from this and lost much -- credibility. Someone should be fired. Fox, in the public imagination and MSM's nightmare, is the re-presentation of conservatism. For it to tarnish the right with the tactics of the left is disgusting.

It hurts all of us who now consider ourselves to be conservative.

They need a mea culpa, a subsequent firing and an online apology to rectify this stupidity. Fox MUST do more than its competitors.

126 MajorPribluda  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:51:34pm

I watched the video, I watched the edited video. Shame, Fox, for two reasons:

First, anything with NEWS in the name shouldn't take these "playful" little potshots at other organizations. You want respect? Just provide chapter and verse where the other guys have been publishing hit pieces. Don't respond in kind, even jokingly, with some photoshop shenanigans.

Second, even if you are joking, keep your joke on topic. You don't attack a NYT reporter named Steinberg who does heavy-handed hit pieces by "Jewifying" him!

The bottom line is that somebody decided to make his nose bigger despite narrowing the rest of the photo. Fox News was playing with fire just for going to press with a cheeky photoshop segment, and deserves to get burned for letting it get completely out of control.

The photoshopper and the next up in the chain, at a minimum, should be out on their asses.

127 Pickle  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 7:54:59pm

Why was Steinberg's nose widened?

The photoshopping of Mr. Reddicliffe appears to have been centered about making him appear older. What was the gist of the Steinberg modification?

That's why it's not funny, and it's not even appropriate.

Yep, much ado about nothing. It was a piece designed to poke fun at the NYT reporters, and the photoshops were blatantly obvious.

There was no need to point out the joke. The alterations were deliberately made very obvious as part of the story.

It's NYT reporters for crying out loud!

Fox should do this more often.

Come on! The alterations were deliberately made extremely obvious so that no one could possibly miss them or think the photos were not altered. There was no attempt to make it seem like the photos were genuine. The alterations are clearly part of the story. They are clearly making fun of some stupid NYT reporters and this is very obvious from the dialogue and the obvious alterations.

This nothing like the subtle alterations intended to be accepted as real that we have seen before.

They said the names of the reporters and put up their picture, there is no reason to believe that the photos would be altered. Even though anyone with a background in photoshop could easily tell they have been altered, the lay person cannot. Maybe the photo afterwards was a joke with the poodle, but the photos before were not. And just like a few other lizards here pointed out: why did they "jewify" Steinberg like in the Nazi and Islamic propaganda cartoons?

FYI for the people who didn't see the spot on FOX (apparently most of the comments so far) the frickin' hosts introduced the pictures as photoshopped pictures on a story about how they were photoshopped.

142 brockton808  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 9:37:33pm

These modifications were made to have a little fun at the Slimes' expense. Hey, they even put one of the faces on a poodle! Seems pretty obvious to me.

re: #129 MajorPribluda

Yes, much like the Fox News Channel itself.

Perhaps, but judging that by the (arguably) least serious, deliberately full of fluff and bullshit, show on the network doesn't make much sense to me. Personally, I think that Brit Hume and Chris Wallace are two of the best news guys on television, and Red Eye is absolutely hilarious. On the other hand, John Gibson and Bill O'Reilly are dangerous fools. Overall, FNC is still the best news channel out there in my opinion, and I'm not gonna throw that opinion under the bus over one stupid joke on FNC's answer to Regis Philbin.

144 markie  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 10:17:37pm

I'm extremely disappointed in Fox recently. I really liked having, if not totally, at least a little more "fair and balanced" alternative to CNN et al.

All I've got left is NPR, fer chrissakes.

145 nikis-knight  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 10:17:52pm

Good grief.
Repeat after me, Fox--you don't alter photos.
Even if it was ethical, even for a joke, which it isn't, it is stupid, because you WILL get caught.

146 MikeMelb  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 12:33:18am

Just bizarre. Did they think people wouldnt notice?

And if it was on purpose, what was the point?

147 arizona9  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 12:39:16am

If they had just put his UNALTERED face on the poodle, I wouldn't even care. But changing them to make them look "weird" is just wrong IMO.

Right, the fact that the head was superimposed on a dog's body is A-okay but put dark circles under the eyes of the head superimposed on the dog's body and Fox&Friends has crossed some sacred journalist line.

The people who look stupid are those like the Huffpost that actually featured this as their top headline and feigned outrage that this was some breach of journalistic ethics. Fox's morning zoo-light show did this as a JOKE. A very obvious joke-to everyone not dumber than a rock. The head of one of the men was in the place of a dog's head. That should have been the first clue. Is this LGF or Huffpo?

148 Amy Proctor  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 2:03:10am

Look at that pic at the top of this thread. If you're OK with them putting that up, I feel bad for you.

150 Duckman  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 4:39:19am

Geez, when the MSM gets caught doing worse, it's just a "mistake".

Dumb move by Fox though if they did it on purpose.

By any chance, does Media Matters think the Rather Papers are real?

151 MadJadBad  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 6:47:01am

"Fox and Friends" is a lame attempt at a "Morning Zoo" type show. I cannot watch it. It falls woefully short at delivering morning news and it's hosts seem more like former weather reporters than political commentators. I actually prefer CNN Headline News in the morning because they do what they say, headline news. Plus, Robin Meade is the best looking news babe ever.

152 bubbasbbq  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 7:02:06am

That is pathetic. I want Fox to be better than that. Screw the rest of them and their faux news, fox should never stoop to their stupid games. Shame on you Fox!

153 Checker77  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 9:31:48am

154 John Costello  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 10:47:17am

This looks like a lot more than just differing aspect ratios and color balances to me.

In the picture above there are several sections of the image that were VERY obviously distorted out of proportion with some kind of Photoshop tool (there are several ways to do it) -- the chin, the nose (look at that thing!), the ears and the hair, all distorted to appear larger. This would not happen simply by transferring an image from one aspect ratio to another.

In the other photo I didn't post, the distortions are just as obvious. The forehead is pulled up to the point where the hair begins to blur.

It's deliberate as all heck.
