DNS Cache Poisoning Attacks?

Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 9:04:21 am PDT

I’ve received several emails this morning from readers in Britain who are being redirected to a bogus “virus checking” site when they try to visit LGF. The problem is not with LGF; if this is happening to you, it’s very likely that your ISP did not promptly patch their DNS servers against this attack: DNS Flaw Leads To Internet ‘Poisoning’ Attacks.

UPDATE at 7/12/08 10:25:14 am:

Other readers are now emailing from Europe, and the problem appears to be very widespread there. Some people in the US are also reporting problems, not just with LGF but with many sites.

UPDATE at 7/12/08 11:38:39 am:

If you’re having these kinds of problems, try switching your DNS servers to the ones maintained by OpenDNS: OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet.

"For Poe, the imp of the perverse was not merely a "tendency" but an nearly irresistible driving force to do the worst possible thing." (from Wikipedia)

The whole world seem to be under the thrall if the Imp these days...even the most well-meaning. Witness the Pope expressing concern about climate change. Just as it's revealed that the problem we need to be worrying about may be global COOLING, not global warming (not to mention a crashing Chinese economy due to pollution), the Pope weighs in and lends more legitimacy to global warming. (I'm not singling out the Pope for special censure here, just giving an example.)

Apparently the big boys, Apple, MS, Linux, Cisco etc discovered it recently and had called each other in, since they wanted to develop their patches in concert. They didn't want one group making a patch and screwing all the other companies, since they are all dependent on each other for security in the long run.

Its the various little hacker groups which are digging in and looking for it now.

39 Luigi  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:22:56am

Sen Charles Herbert Hoover Schumer, member of the Senate Banking Committee, dangerously exacerbated the current economic slide by releasing inside information last month that called into question the solvency of IndyMac bank of Los Angeles. His remarks caused an on old-fashioned, Depression era style run on the bank by passbook holders over the last few weeks. And that has caused the bank to fall into federal receivership. And now that has precipitated an earthquake at the underpinning of all banks. Just like the Great Depression.

Get out your paranoia meds because I think the Democrats are trying to wreck the economy to help their election chances for November. After all, isn't wrecking the economy the net effort of their refusal to drill for oil? This Schumer affair is perfectly consistent in its effect with their refusal to drill for oil. It is a second front on the assault on the economy right before the election.

Hot Air covers it here:
[Link: hotair.com...]

In a written statement, the Office of Thrift Supervision, which regulated IndyMac, said “the immediate cause” of the failure was statements made by Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat. Mr. Schumer in late June publicly raised concerns about the bank’s solvency.

The BBC notes about IndyMac "It is the second-largest financial institution to fail in US history, regulators say."

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

The cover-up.

Hello! The Los Angles Times, wherein resides the headquarters of IndyMac, DOES NOT COVER THE STORY of Schumer's involement in its news pages. They put it here, as an opinion column, in a subsection, of their blogs section.

[Link: latimesblogs.latimes.com...]

WashPost runs it as a Reuters wire piece, sans Schumer:

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. banking regulators swooped in to seize mortgage lender IndyMac Bancorp Inc (IMB.N) on Friday after withdrawals by panicked depositors led to the third-largest banking failure in U.S. history. California-based IndyMac, which specialized in a type of mortgage that often required minimal documents from borrowers, became the fifth U.S. bank to fail this year as a housing bust and credit crunch strain financial institutions.

Of course, neither WashPost or Reuters will tell you the "immediate cause" of the third largest banking failure in US history. The fact that they leave out the cause adds weight to the notion that they're shielding Schumer and the Dems.

Does The New York Times mention Schumer in their story? You bet. Click your way to page two and Schumer gets mentioned -- AS A GOOD GUY! He is the calming soothing voice stilling the roiling foams of panic by forcing the Executive Branch to do the right thing:

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

“In these volatile markets, share price is not the most reliable measure for judging Fannie and Freddie and will not dictate the responses by the
regulators,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, who has held discussions all week with senior administration officials. “Rather, the regulators are closely watching the performance of the companies’ bonds, and how their yields compare to U.S. Treasuries. Right now, Freddie and Fannie bonds are trading closer to Treasuries than they were in March after the Bear Stearns collapse, a reassuring signal.”

I just had another attack by a fake scan web page.

46 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:27:45am

Some background:

Security Community Cooperates To Fix 'DNS Poisoning'

In an unusual move that reflects the seriousness of the security flaw, news of the vulnerability was delayed for months to allow software vendors like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), Cisco (NSDQ: CSCO), and Sun -- more than 80 are affected -- to release coordinated fixes.

As part of its monthly patch schedule, Microsoft on Tuesday fixed the DNS flaw in Windows with patch MS08-037, "Vulnerabilities in DNS Could Allow Spoofing."

Amol Sarwate, manager of vulnerability labs at Qualys, considers the vulnerability to be significant. "I wouldn't characterize it as an end of the world scenario but it is a very important vulnerability," he said.

While details about the vulnerability and how to exploit it have been deliberately withheld, Sarwate said that the issue appears to be that the transaction ID generated in a DNS request -- querying a DNS server to link an IP address with an Internet domain name -- is insufficiently random to avoid being guessed by a knowledgeable attacker.

More on Schumer and the banking crisis.

From that NY Times article today IndyMac gets mentioned but once in that story. And they mention it as an aside, a mere detail:

Shares of Freddie Mac closed at $7.75, down more than 45 percent for the week. Fannie Mae settled at $10.25, a 30 percent slide for the week. And a fresh sign of industry problems emerged on Friday when the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation seized IndyMac Bank, making it the largest bank to fail since the 1990s.

The company, an offshoot of Countrywide Financial and once one of the nation’s largest independent mortgage lenders, was a major issuer of subprime loans.

Countrywide, huh? Countrywide. That's the ATM machine for Christopher Dodd who heads the Senate banking committee and is responsible for all this sh$t. The banking committee is responsible for this, and Schumer, who is on the banking and finance committees, are finessing it into a worldwide financial crisis.

Dodd and Obama are big recipients of Couyntrywide money. Especially Obama who "has collected more money from Countrywide Financial in the last four years than any other member of Congress, according to this blog:

[Link: noquarterusa.net...]

The Guardian seems to have a clue, sort of. Tthey can say whatever they want about this because they're not in America.

[Link: www.guardian.co.uk...]

Conventional thinking is that a sagging economy in a presidential election year favors a candidate running against the party in control of the White House.

Example: A savings and loan crisis in 1990 contributed to a picture of an economy on the ropes, and incumbent President George H.W. Bush lost his 1992 re-election bid to Democrat Bill Clinton.

"In the broader picture, anything that is bad news for the economy is bad news for McCain, and this is bad news," said William Galston, a former Clinton White House domestic policy aide.

PJ Media is meticulous about only using reputable ad servers, so it's very unlikely that a PJ ad is causing it.

It's much more likely that unpatched DNS servers are the cause. This is a huge problem, worldwide, and I suspect quite a few ISPs have been caught unprepared.

Run a virus scan on your computer. You may have a process (on your side) that is working in concert with these other name servers which may be infected.

It can't hurt.

If you have not done so, I reccomend all Windows users use your system restore utility and set a back up point if you still feel your system is good. If you get hit later, you can go back to your restore point and get rid of a lot of nasty stuff.

PJ Media is meticulous about only using reputable ad servers, so it's very unlikely that a PJ ad is causing it.

It's much more likely that unpatched DNS servers are the cause. This is a huge problem, worldwide, and I suspect quite a few ISPs have been caught unprepared.

Well, PJM media recently had a horrible ad that spewed out sound unbidden -- a really invasive kind of ad, which I've never encountered elsewhere. Haven't seen it recently, but...hmmmmm....

Who controls these unpatched DNS servers? My ISP is one of the major "backbone of the Internet" companies, so they definitely know what's going on.

I have come to LGF and have had an AD, displaying on LGF, try to keep contacting a URL, over and over.

The URL address display at the bottom of my screen keeps showing an address, very quickly, and my speaker "clicks" indicating that a "pop up" was trying to come in.

But I have my pop up blocker on. But this won't stop until I refresh the LGH page. I suspect that's because I then get a different ad in the ad rotation.

Charles, it does/has happened here at LGF. And I know it's not some malware or something on my side, because I am clean.

re: #78 zombie

They do it to trick people to click on their fake "virus checking" site, and when you do, they install malware on your computer, and then you are used as a "zombie machine" (yes, really) to send out spam to their mailing lists all days -- without you even knowing it. Enough people fall for the ruse, and millions of spams are sent by unwitting accomplices. Then, all it takes is one idiot out of a million spam recipients to get conned out of money, and it makes the whole scheme worthwhile for the spammers.

If you get sent to a website that you did not want to go to:

Don't click on any button regardless of what they say. A button that says "Close Window" can just as easily download a virus as one that says "Download Free Trial".

If possible quickly break your internet connection before doing anything else. Unplug your DSL/cable/modem from your computer. Turn off your wireless card or router.

Once you are isolated from the internet, their silly program is rather helpless. Now close windows, restart your browser, etc. Sometimes their programs and pop-up windows will try to open new pages, but with no connection to the internet, they can't. They may give error messages telling you to restore your internet connection. Ignore them. If you know how, it would be good to check for any recent downloads. If any look fishy, you might want to delete or isolate them.

Various Companies and organizations around the world create and control there own DNS servers, which operate in a mesh connecting each other to update their databases. Depending on where you connect to and from, the path you take for name resolution can pass thru several DNS servers. If one server is vulnerable and is providing bad information to the other servers, they could be providing bad data, even after they are patched.

Yes, that it what happens. I hear the "click" or "pop" too.

I jiust realized that up until two days ago I had my "block all pop-up windows" setting turned on as normal, but two days ago I turned it off because a specific (trusted) site required it to be off, and then I forgot to turn it back on. Only when I allowed pop-up windows did the problem happen. I just turned pop-up windows OFF again, and I bet I'll never encounter the problem anymore.

Aren't pop-up windows enacted by Javascript or something like that? I'm in over my head here.

Tell the kids they are cuddling, hugging etc. They understand that at 3 and 4. Like a hug and good night kiss.

Charles, this was AFTER I had the complete LGF page, downloaded on my side. Not before, or during the download.

I don't see how the name server could still be trying to push something my, AFfTER the request was complete, unless one of the ads, now on my machine, had some code in there that was still trying to contact something.

I agree. The problem does NOT happen when the LGF page is in the process of loading, but long after it's already been loaded for a while. There's something ON the page that's doing it.

If your computer has been infected, there is no telling how it will show up. You can't assume anything from that timing.

I am clean. And anytime something like that happens, I check the processes. I know what every process is/and does. I realize hacks can be named the same as one of the known processes, but I check the time-slicing that process is getting, and if it seems like it is TOO busy, I will check out on the web to see if that process has been known to have been comprimised.

I'm not trying to blame LGH of whatever, just passing on what I see at this end, what I know, and what I do when it happens.

Hopefully this info can help.

The reason I linked to the DNS cache article is because this is a very serious worldwide problem. If an attacker manages to poison a DNS cache, they can literally do almost anything -- download Javascript to your computer without you being aware of it, for just one example, that waits for a specific amount of time, then pops up a dialog.

Hmmmm! Well, it's over my head, that's for sure. All I can report is my experience -- here are the symptoms:

- When I'm on LGF sometimes over the last two days, and unwanted pop-up window will open at the bottom right corner of the screen, with an audible accompanying "click" or "pop" sound
- At the same instant, the LGF page will close and disappear.
- If one tries to close the unwanted window, it opens up a new window telling you to run an obviously fraudulent virus scan.
- I get the problem ONLY when I am at LGF -- no other site.
- It happens not when the page is loading, but after it's been loaded for several minutes. No action or click on my part initiates the problem -- it just happens.
- It only started happening after I allowed pop-up windows.
- Running Safari 3.1.1 on a MAc with OSX 10.4.11.

That's it! I leave the diagnosis to the experts.

Otherwise, I seem OK here in Los Angeles, regarding the DNS issue, Verizon as an ISP. But I've had the virtamundo malware before, and it's a booger. Its symptoms are pop-ups to scan and scam sites at random times. It works by installing a semi-randomly named DLL that invoked at startup and waits random times before doing its nasties. Most antivirus and malware systems can't see it, or at least couldn't as of a year or so ago. And the sites it links to are those that try to pop up more browsers when you close one, and it still often succeeds, even against the kind of modest protection I run, anyway.

Can you explain. How can an infected DNS send me something, after the fact of my request?

I have a hardware firewall. If any responses come back to it, and it cannot match the request, port, ip and other information it holds on requests, it simply drops the response.

Something would HAVE to be on my end ASKING for something. Or my hardware firewall would have had to be spoofed.

Ideas?

Walter

Just read this from a friend...

This is wild! Try it!

How smart is Your Right Foot ?
Just try this. It is from an orthopedic surgeon............ This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your
brain!
1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer,
lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your
right Hand. Your foot will change direction.

I told you so ! And there's nothing you can do about it !

You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Send it to your buddies to frustrate them too.

If a DNS server is compromised, your firewall will not know anything is amiss. The attacker can basically control every request coming through the server, and reroute it to anything they like. Your browser might request an image from LGF, for example, and the attacker could reroute the request to a Javascript file. It all happens in the DNS server, and your browser never knows about it -- as far as the browser is concerned, nothing unusual happened.

I've been giving this some thought. Here is one way this could happen, even with the amount of protection I have at my end.

1) I send a request out for a page.
2) Spoofed DNS gets my request.
3) It goes out, get some hacker code
4) Sends that packet to me, with the info that request is not complete.
5) Spoofed DNS grabs what I asked for
6) Sends the result of my original request as more packets
7) Ends the transmission
8) My firewall says "Asked for LGF, got LGF."
9) In the beginning, middle or end of those data packets, bad code, bad, bad code.

More from "The Imp of the Perverse":

We stand upon the brink of a precipice. We peer into the abyss - we grow sick and dizzy. Our first impulse is the shrink away from the danger. Unaccountably we remain... it is but a thought, although a fearful one, and one which chills the very marrow of our bones with the fierceness of the delight of its horror. It is merely the idea of what would be our sensations during the sweeping precipitancy of a fall from such a height... for this very cause do we now the most vividly desire it.

Leftists, liberals, and Democrats want to jump into the abyss. Which would be fine, if they weren't trying to pull the rest of us along with them.

Quick answer (there could be a dozen answers), you got a bad memory chip, some address (or many concurrent addresses) are bad and the operating system is not compensating for those.

Charles, please post up that people should NEVER use their ISP's DNS servers. They can manually set their DNS to use Opendns's servers.

They are:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Sign up for their free service and you can use it to filter unwanted content if you have kids and you can set up shortcuts. I for example can type in my browser: lgf and I come straight to this site.

Their website can be seen here at opendns.com

10) Doesn't always happen, it depends on how may servers, what server, my request hits trying to make it to LGF server.

Walter in Golden, Co.

You (or someone else) said the problem happens AFTER the requested LGF page finishes loading so this is not an LGF server problem, period. This is a problem, as I see it, at the ad server side as a new ad is being "served" to your browser and getting redirected to somewhere other than is intended.

The DNS servers are the card catalog to where all the servers that comprise the internet are physically located (referenced by their IP addresses, those funny xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx numbers), cross-referenced with the World Wide Web domain name system, and if the data stored on a DNS server is compromised the system is seriously frakked as erroneous IP addresses are given for any and every DNS request.

Fer instance, your browser requests the IP address for littlegreenfootballs.com from a DNS server, and the DNS server is supposed to return the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx physical IP address of the server computer where the LGF website is being hosted. If the DNS server has bad information your browser will never know. The design of the system is that there is no security or verification built-in to detect bad data being sent by a poisoned DNS server.

No, this is not a full explanation of how things work. The technical details give me a headache at times, and I don't want to inundate others with extraneous minutiae.

The paranoid side of my brain cells are starting to kick in and see this as another "front" in the on-going (and unrecognised) war on our economy. Why try to compete militarily when a disruption or collapse of the American economy is easier to achieve. Break our superiority in technology and economic might, and fanaticism can become the deciding factor in victory.

DNS issues are not necessarily completely beyond end-users' control, altho as a practical matter, they probably are for 99+ percent of us.

It is usually possible to specify, or re-specify one's preferred DNS server(s). Ie, choose a different one that works well, or one that isn't compromised this week.

But those are geek-level tweeks, perhaps best left to experts. It is sooo easy to break stuff, and then be without a working internet connection. It is also possible to get in legal trouble by using one that's not free, and that you are not authorized to use. Or your ISP might not want you messing with such things, perhaps just because it can easlily lead to support problems.

I don't see how somebody's poll (or anybody's combination of polls) is going to change anything in Denver, whether Obama comes in strong or not.

If people want to behave badly, they will.
If they don't, they won't.

The recent apparent parity in the polls may mean nothing other than better polling. In years past, the Dem candidate has always come into the polls stronger than the Republican, even when they've ultimately lost.

Now personally I do not ever turn off my computer unless I need to do a hard reset or change some hardware component. When I am not actively using my internet connection I unplug the connection cable at the modem end so as to sever the connection to the internet.

Turning a computer on and off repeatedly can do grave harm to the delicate electronics inside; the power surge of turning on being the problem. IMO you might as well take a 20 pound sledge to the box for the possible damage you can do. But then I have been a tech-geek from before there were PCs. Your mileage may vary. ;)

I uninstalled it and installed a new firewall, Comodo, and have had no issues since. But I'm going to run a bunch of scans right now, just to be safe.

Also- I've never had any issues with LGF ads.

re: #119 Pvt Bin Jammin

The same thing happened to me the other morning. I had to uninstall my Zone Alarm :(.

From what I have read, recently, their version 7.0.483.000 might work with the new patch.

They sent out a patch for Zone Alarm Pro users yesterday. MS Windows XP security patch KB951748 does not play well with Zone Alarm and completely blocked internet access after installation.

You can set the Zone Alarm internet security setting to Medium to get around the problem, but that leaves you a little more vulnerable. The Patch from Zone Alarm (7.0.483.000) fixed the problem. I'll have to check if I can install that as the free version, I don't remember if that is way they do it or not.

No, you are still physically connected to the internet through your operating system, be it Windows or Mac or Linux. That is just a software disconnect, and very specific to the software being run. Your operating system provides the means to connect to the internet, your software (browser and other programs you run) requires the operating system to do the actual work of connecting to the internet and routing the data in and out. You need to physically disconnect your operating system to be safe.

369 zerodamage  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 11:42:48am

The problem is that the ISP's DNS servers and service in general is an after thought (Unless it can make them money such as Verizon's case). I went to OpenDNS because it is free and because their primary focus is on DNS. I had one of the folks that I support use it when she was in England a few months back because the ISP she was on at some hotel was down and she could not connect to anything. It fixed her problem.

Yes, there is always that chance. Just like there is always that chance that lightning can strike you while walking to your car. The odds of it happening are slim to none. You are more likely to be hit by lightning than to have your hard drive "pop" from turning your computer on. All I am saying though is that you have to be careful what you say because people will then leave their stuff on all the time thinking that turning it off and then back on means their computer might die. Leaving it on all the time results in it having a much shorter life than turning it off at the end of the day. Your chances of a power surge hitting your computer and killing it is much greater than something in your PC dying because you turned it on.

but using them as a group who can agitate and picket and make demands from the gov't. for redress (money). what happens to the money?
maybe some goes to the aggrieved people to placate them and keep them voting.
but the community organizer can't let them really move up the economic ladder or do better. otherwise he loses his base.
a community organizer seems like a parasite.

Obama will pick his VP from this pool of qualified candidates, no doubt

Not well known, but the Department of Defense has public websites where service members and DoD employees can legitimately download anti-virus software for free.

Wow to this:
Former US diplomat gets year for anti-Arab comments

"They will burn in hellfire on this earth and in the hereafter," said Syring, 50, in an e-mail that was included in the indictment last year.

So, just to clarify, does this mean that if I can find the Episcopalian workshop leaders who convinced my Episcopalian mother before she died that her daughter (that would be me, the convert), son in law (my hubby), and two grandchildren (being raised Jewish) are going to burn in hell... and she shouldn't have a relationship with them... well, these instructors would be tried for hate crimes and put in jail? How cool is that?

if and when they can put it into practice.

The Obamanation will work on it; part of his jobs (for all his supporters) plan.

No sorry, it's still OK to say bad things about Jews...now, if you were raised Muslim and converted to Episcopalian (and are still alive after the local mullah found out)....THEN, they could convict

Redford has gotten very annoying. He likes to say 'beware" when he lectures the masses.

Like that door in Labyrinth? I captured that sound and used it for some system noise or other on my Amigas.

Thanks for this post Charles. I was just trying to figure out how "Vista Anti Virus" got in my system this morning. Protein Wisdom sent me there yesterday, and now I realize that it is on their side, not mine...

And I personally have LOTS of empirical evidence by doing repairs on my own and other people's PCs that show something different. I also have several long lived and stable PCs now that were nothing but problem children for hardware failures when I repeated turned them on and off.

So now it boils down to the "religious wars" of the "experts"; and I don't do fatwas very good. I am just a tinkerer. ;)

Where's his crime? He didn't threaten any of them.

Nice tool to see whats running on your system is PRCView. Its basically like TaskManager, but displays full file paths of the processes running and has built in internet search capabilities for more details on what it finds. Very useful when looking at processes that might be spoofing another processes name such as SVCHOST or Explorer.exe

I'm assuming he made specific threats of violence. (?)

I've always thought the best way to really make a mess of the net was to hack the DNS system, as it would allow just about any site/domain to be compromised without actually having to attack/hack said site/domain.

On occasion when Comcast DNS servers go down (rare, but it has happened) I switch to Level3's DNS servers:

4.2.2.1, and 4.2.2.2

Those having issues might try switching to these for now.. I'm not seeing any issues at the moment on Comcast.

You can also get process monitor from sysinternals.com (now owned by Micrsoft) Or is it process monitor? They let you see what files each process has opened, what dlls it is using, etc. More for geeks

428 DistantThunder  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 12:24:55pm

Speaking of being under attack, last night I was perusing a book at the book store that contained stories from many different pilots on 911. It was chaos up there with F-15's with missiles escorting planes to airports, and airport controllers telling pilots that they couldn't land and had to divert:

"Did you tell the F-15's?" one pilot asked?

One crew member suggested that they climb to 15,000 feet in order to anesthetized the passengers.

I 'm searching for the title.

Most people assume a website it a .com when they go to the address. It only matters if you're worried someone is going to try to take the name in spit of you.
