Mossad Helped in FARC Hostage Rescue?

Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 12:34:59 pm PDT

The story apparently originates in a Spanish newspaper, then was filtered through AFP, so take it with a few grams of sodium iodide: ’Mossad helped release Betancourt’.

According to Vanguardia, Israel, France and the US participated in the operation for different reasons: France because of Betancourt’s half-French nationality, the US because of the three Americans in the group and Israel in order to maintain good bilateral relations with Colombia and the US.

Vanguardia’s Tel Aviv correspondent said the Mossad operation consisted of two agents unknown to each other separately infiltrating FARC.

The pair managed to penetrate the Marxist guerrilla group so effectively that they ultimately controlled what FARC did or didn’t know, the Catalan newspaper said.

The Israeli and US secret services used unmanned spy drones to locate the camp where the hostage were held, the Vanguardia said.

(Hat tip: Rand.)

Also see Barcepundit:

GRAIN OF SALT INDEED: Charles is suspicious of the report by a Spanish newspaper -which is actually my hometown main paper, La Vanguardia- that Mossad helped in Ingrid Betancourt’s rescue. And suspicious he should be: it is so thinly sourced that it almost makes you cry. The reporter says he was told about it by an unnamed Mossad agent while sitting outside a Tel Aviv restaurant. You can almost see the scene in a Golan-Globus second-rate spy movie.

And it’s the same gullible newspaper that five years ago seriously reported on the “strange shapes” in the belly of UA 175 that crashed into WTC2 on 9/11. I’m linking to a translation of the original report which was, obviously, in Spanish, but I can confirm that the translation is correct.

Glad to see Mossad's skills put to use. Too bad it can't work on lunatics like Hezbollah with the 2 soldiers they supposedly had alive.

They've been paranoid for some time being. You recall when one of the FARC members killed a commander and cut off his arm to collect the reward? And the rescue took place after this execution happened.

Nations other than the US and Israel are capable of initiating covert actions and defending themselves against insurgents. Not everything is a nefarious plot organized by the left's international boogiemen -- the Zionist entity or the Yankee imperialists.

In their rush to "taint" the rescue with ties to Israel, they end up painting the rest of the world as mindless sluggards, endlessly duped into doing the bidding of the West. Newsflash: Colombians are perfectly capable of despising marxists all on their own... no prompting from outsiders necessary.

Maybe I don't get the legal issues fully, but a side of this story that seems to be missing is the role NGO's have played in this. The rescuers were pretending to be with a NGO when they WALKED into the FARC camp. Isn't a NGO working hand in hand with a known terror group some type of violation of international law? The NGO can't say "hey, we didn't know FARC was a internationally known terror group". So what legal justification could they have for working with FARC?

The correct chemical name is actually sodium chloride, not sodium iodide.

While ordinary table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), there is such a compound as sodium iodide (NaI). It's also correctly called a "salt" in the chemical sense, and it's safe to ingest, like sodium chloride.

On the other hand, the iodized salt you buy at the store is normally NaCl with a bit of potassium iodide (KI) added, rather than sodium iodide -- I assume that KI is simply cheaper than NaI.

And by the way, if you've ever wondered why ALL table salt isn't iodized, given that iodine is necessary in the diet, the answer is that some people need to avoid excess iodine. (My sister had thyroid cancer some years ago, and as part of her treatment regimen she had to be on an iodine-restricted diet.)

Actually, the plaintiff in this case is not a muslimah who claimed that it would be immodest to roll up her sleeves while washing her hands. (Although there have been such cases.) BTW Mr. Johnson, use 'sodium chloride,' not a grain of sodium 'iodide,' in order to make your comment work about not trusting the story. I used NaCl and it sure helped :-)

What astonishes me is that "health food" nuts prefer sea salt to rock salt.

Rock salt is sea salt, with 200 million fewer years of fish sh*t and industrial effluents mixed in.

But there is a difference. Naturally crystallized sea salt can be a bit lass salty because of the high mineral content. It is not uncommon to have sea salt that is as low as 83% sodium chloride.

It's also used to detect radiation, though you have to play with it a bit for it to be used like that. It's "doped with thallium": NaI(Tl).

"There are no precedents for such a perfect operation. Perhaps the Israelis, with the reputation they have for such extraordinary commandos - perhaps only they can come close to the coup that we have seen today."

Her reference is not clear that Mossad was actually there, but perhaps eludes to Israeli involvement. And that can be in many ways.

"Betancort" is a sephardic name (Spanish Jew) and while Ingrid Betancourt is Catholic, she may certainly have some Jewish ancestry.

Ties in nicely, very very conveniently with Chavez's recent snarling pronouncement that Columbia is the Israel of South America. People are reading this with delight, thinking of MOSSAD's creativity and pure balls, but the way it's written seems like pure anti-Israeli propaganda, with all the right key words to get the Zionist conspiracy thugs riled.

The Columbians have computer files that have enabled them to locate raw material for dirty bombs, implicate Columbian elected officials by name as FARC and Chavez stooges, seize bank accounts, revealed FARC expansionism into Europe, and name US Congressman McGovern of Massachusetts as representing not his Massachusetts constituents, but FARC in the US Congress, in direct opposition to the sitting US president, with the desire to undermine US foreign policy and security, a traitorous association and undertaking. The Columbians COULD have managed this without too much outside help on their own. God bless them. While elite indulgent Americans snorted coke up their nostrils, in hedonistic excess and boastful display of money and self-centerness, decent, hard-working Columbians were terrorised for decades by the cut-throat cartels that provided the powder to selfish brats. The Columbians deserve every hard-earned gain they've made in returning their country to decency and peace.

It'd be source of national pride for the USA and Israel to have been part of this latest FARC roundup. Good bet they were, but this article isn't written to help an alliance like that, but hurt it and undermine any future cooperative endeavors against violent radical movements funded by communists of the likes of Chavez.

Three hunters are out on safari -- an American, a Britisher and an Israeli. They are captured by cannibals who start getting the cooking pots ready. The cannibal chief tells the hunters the hunter they can have one last wish.

"What's your last request?" he asks the American.

"I'd like a steak," he replies.

So the cannibals kill a zebra and serve the American his steak.

"What do you want?" the cannibal chief asks the Brit.

"I'd like a have smoke on my pipe," which they let him do.

Then the chief asks the Israeli: "What's your last wish?"

"I want you to kick my rear end."

"Be serious," says the top cannibal.

"C'mon, you promised," says the Israeli.

"Oh, all right," says the chief, who delivers the requested kick.

Whereupon, the Israeli pulls out a gun, shoots the chief and a few other cannibals while the rest run away.

The American and Brit are furious. "Why didn't you do that in the first place, so we wouldn't have had to go through all this?" they demand.

Replies the Israeli: "What? Are you mad? The UN would have condemned me as the aggressor."

Beat me to it.

We were in West Africa on 9/11 and the next day, a Lebanese we knew came up to us with all good will, truly touched, and said how sorry he was for the atrocity of the attacks. He was sincere, and it was a very kind thing to do, for he knew we all were shaken and disturbed. Indeed, everyone was. It shocked everyone of all nationalities whom we dealt with there. In the next breath he said, "You know it must have been MOSSAD who did it." This wasn't a kook, wasn't someone who'd subscribe to Islamofascism in any way.
Wasn't until that moment until we truly realised how devastatingly pervasive and corrosive and omnipresent that propaganda about MOSSAD is in the Middle East. The bogeyman for everything.

Whether there is any truth to it is another matter. Ultimately it was a Colombian operation, and any assistance they received from anyone else doesn't detract from that.

A little Googling suggests that radioactive iodine would be a less-than-ideal choice in constructing a "dirty bomb" -- but that's not to say that terrorists wouldn't try it. And if they did want to use radioactive iodine, I assume it would be in the form of sodium iodide, rather than some other chemical compound, because NaI is commonly used in thryoid-cancer treatment.

Now they'll all be whining because McDonald's will have no choice but to close that restaurant. And quietly not hire people in the future who have a cultural issue with basic sanitation.

Sheesh, there may be a hundred or more McDonald's outlets in the Greater Vancouver area. If this ruling applies to but one, I'd say close the doors tomorrow. If it applies to all of them, I'd say to simply defy the BCHRC, and go on requiring employees to wash hands.

I generally avoid Mickey D's like the plague. If I go back to Vancouver, my old home town, I'll literally be avoiding the plague.

While ordinary table salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), there is such a compound as sodium iodide (NaI). It's also correctly called a "salt" in the chemical sense, and it's safe to ingest, like sodium chloride.

I'd hold off on calling it safe. Most Material Safety Data Sheets label it either hazardous or very hazardous to ingest.

I remember being three years old and my parents kept waking me up to look at the television. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't let me sleep.

I remember riding my bicycle down the street like some 8 year old Paul Revere yelling "We've landed on the moon! We've landed on the moon!"

I stayed up all night to watch Armstrong and Aldrin exit the LEM and walk around.

re: #31 razorbacker

It’s entirely possible. But, the official line is just “tangential help.”

As a matter of good craftsmanship you never reveal your hand so, it's expected that Israel would back away from the matter.

[haaretz]

Asked about the Israeli involvement in it Ziv said there is "no need to exaggerate."

"We don't want to take credit for something we didn't do," a company source said. "We helped them prepare themselves to fight terror. We helped them to plan operations and strategies and develop intelligence sources. That's quite a bit, but shouldn't be taken too far."

Israelis may not have taken part in the rescue, but they advised and guided, sold equipment and intelligence technology. The Israeli involvement began a year and a half ago, when Colombia asked Israel for help in its struggle against FARC, which had become a militia specializing in kidnapping civilians and military figures for ransom and drug trading. Israel has over the years sold Colombia planes, drones, weapons and intelligence systems. At the Defense Ministry's suggestion, Global CST won the $10 million contract to work with Colombia.
