I just felt it down in Chula Vista. Wow.

It went a long time - 40 seconds or so.

That is a long time. Loma Prieta was about 15 seconds and I thought it would never end.

The Whittier quake in 1987 was a 5.9. Northridge quake was much larger. There was a large quake 7.4 or so in Landers (near Joshua Tree Monument) that was the largest I felt-even in Orange Co.

Right at the time the earthquake is reported to have happened, I was out walking my dog and a flock of birds started squawking like crazy and flew out of the trees behind my house. 105 zombie  Tue, Jul 29, 2008 12:02:17pm

Didn't feel a thing up here in northern California.

The very first earthquake I remember was when I was a kid -- and it was a 5.6. Scared the hell out of me, at the time. Subsequently, I've been through much bigger ones, including Loma Prieta (which for some reason hardly fazed me).

Your experience always depends on the specifics of where you are located in relation to the quake. If you're along the fault, or on landfill, or in a tall building, it will feel much stronger. If you're on bedrock, or in a spot where the seismic waves are less strong (still a mystery as to why this happens sometimes -- there can be "calm areas" within the quake zone), it won't feel so bad.

I'm at the top of one of the El Segundo Towers (24th floor). At first there was a little shake, that seemed to die down. I was thinking little earthquake, then the building started swaying again, this time a little more, and it seemed to go on for 30 seconds (I didn't time it, so it probably wasn't quite that long). For the size of the earhquake and the distance I would have expected more swaying.

That initial little shake, which is magnified by how high I am, is probably what initially spooks the animals.

Interesting - thats something I didn't know!
Seems to me that one should be much more observant of the behaviour of the animals around us.
Miss Dog crawls under the table even before there is the first thunder&lightning - as for earthquakes: well, we only have very small ones, about 2-3 on the Richter scale, nobody notices.
The occasional bigger ones, up to4, have chimneys tumbling down.
Last time that happened some eejits actually asked if that was due to Global Warming!

Answering my own question
...
1989, Oct 17 San Francisco Bay area, California, USA 62 killed 7.1

My sister was living in the Marina then. She was on the way home from work. When she got home, her apartment was completely trashed, including furniture wrecked and a big crack in the building. One of her friends lived in the building that burned and lost everything (no renters' insurance). She moved to other parts of the bay area and never moved back. Scared her half to death.

A five can cause really minor damage, a 6 moderate (the rictor scale is logarithmic, so a 6 is ten times as powerful as a five). Given the way we tend to build things in CA, anything less than a six tends to result in only very minor damage.

Your friendly local geo-guy here.
I called our university's seismology lab, they were glad I wasn't the yokel media again.
Nothing to add to the above except that the event is high amplitude, low frequency, making some kinds of damage more likely than usual for this magnitude.
In particular, be careful of falling bricks, glass, and masonry from tall structures, anything over 30 feet. This could be a hazard for some time. Structural collapse is very unlikely, especially with CA codes. I'm just glad this didn't happen in the quake-illiterate New Madrid zone.
Stay safe, everyone. The 'net scooped everyone on this, including USGS.

Not a dumb question at all. Quakes don't start getting really serious until they're above about 6.0. The upper 5's can knock stuff off of shelves. Also depends on the type of quake, which the number doesn't address.

Interesting. Dogs are indeed supposed to be the most sensitive. Dogs and elephants.

We still don't know if they feel the pre-rumblings, or if they hear the cracking rock, or if they somehow detect the piezoelectric emissions (which are known to happen in the seconds before many quakes.)

Never felt an earthquake. Never want to either. 30 seconds is a long time. Do people just wait to see if aftershocks happen? I hope all the SoCal lizards check in and are ok and their property is intact.

The thing about quakes is you never know when they will end once they start. I've been through so many quakes in so many parts of the US (Seattle, So CA, AK, along with a few other places) and the rest of the world that I now just stop whatever I am doing and grab hold until it is all over; scared/worried/concerned comes later, especially if there is damage.

re: #47 Nadnerb

The Whittier quake in 1987 was a 5.9. Northridge quake was much larger. There was a large quake 7.4 or so in Landers (near Joshua Tree Monument) that was the largest I felt-even in Orange Co.

The same day as the 7.5 magnitude Landers quake (June 28, 1992 - it was my ex-girlfriend's 21st birthday) there was a 6.6 in Big Bear, right under my feet. The trees weren't swaying back and forth like they normally would, all the limbs were flapping up and down violently. Then the neighbor's chimney fell against my house. Yikes.

The Northridge quake of 1994 was also 6.6, IIRC.

When this one happened today, I was underneath my car trying to remove the radiator and the car started rocking back and forth on the jack stands.

Double yikes!

What it is, is we're all waiting for "The Big One", which will level the whole city.

Even a smaller one can destroy freeway overpasses, stop water and power for a while, and you never know just what.

This 5.8 is right about on the border of where you expect real destruction. The Big One will be at least 7.x.

My vote is for the piezoelectricity.

Dunno - dogs, especially Border Collies, have very sensitive hearing.
Might be a combination of both.
Elephants - I think they can feel the subsonic rumblings through their feet - they do communicate subsonically, iirc.

Here in Southern California, when they talk of The Big One™, they mean something 8.0 or larger. A 5.8 is a moderate earthquake and, in SoCal, that's not likely to cause "destruction", like collapsing freeway overpasses, but could cause damage to unreinforced masonry - which is not allowed anymore - but most of those have been retrofitted. A 6.5+ is when you'll start seeing significant damage.

OTOH, in the Third World, a 5.8 can cause serious damage and loss of life.

re: #252 Capitalist Tool

Is that earthquake scale log scale?

Log scale.

The Richter magnitude scale, or more correctly local magnitude ML scale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a Wood–Anderson torsion seismometer output. So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. The effective limit of measurement for local magnitude is about ML = 6.8.

re: #128 Lee Coller

I'm at the top of one of the El Segundo Towers (24th floor). At first there was a little shake, that seemed to die down. I was thinking little earthquake, then the building started swaying again, this time a little more, and it seemed to go on for 30 seconds (I didn't time it, so it probably wasn't quite that long). For the size of the earthquake and the distance I would have expected more swaying.

That initial little shake, which is magnified by how high I am, is probably what initially spooks the animals.

P-waves and S-waves. At least the first one gives you a bit of warning if you know what it is.
Our last big quake in the NW was in 2001. It was around a 7 but deep so the damage wasn't severe. Pretty scary though. I spent the time (about 30 seconds or so) under my desk praying that the Alaska Way Viaduct wouldn't come down.

re: #290 jcm

After that- planetary dustcloud?

re: #287 Spiny Norman

Here in Southern California, when they talk of The Big One™, they mean something 8.0 or larger. A 5.8 is a moderate earthquake and, in SoCal, that's not likely to cause "destruction", like collapsing freeway overpasses, but could cause damage to unreinforced masonry - which is not allowed anymore - but most of those have been retrofitted. A 6.5+ is when you'll start seeing significant damage.

OTOH, in the Third World, a 5.8 can cause serious damage and loss of life.

Depends where it hits, too. I've been right on top of little single-jolt 2.x's here in west Los Angeles that left you no doubt. If a relatively small (5.x) number went off at the right location and geometry, it could do real damage. Fortunately big quakes require big faults, which are mostly mapped and not directly under my feet!

The Sylmar and Northridge quakes that did destroy overpasses, were 6.6/6.7. I enjoyed riding bike on the closed 10 freeway until a humorless cop (also joyriding, pulling big s-turns!) chased me off. Supposedly all overpasses are now reinforced and good for 7.x. And I guess all this earthquake-proof engineering of high-rise must be working, not a hint of problems anywhere in town.

One scary thing about this isn't the so much the earthquake itself but possible downed power lines or broken gas mains. The epicenter of the quake is also below a real tinderbox. There have already been a couple small fires in that area but when it really goes up it can be especially nasty.

I'll bet you were a little shook up, indeed. A friend on the 13th floor of the Figueroa Plaza was pretty shook up. Our daughter was on an upper floor of the LAX courthouse with an elderly disabled crime victim. She said it was pretty scary as well but the building is on rollers. She and the elderly guy were sitting by a wall of windows, however, so that was the scariest thing.

According to my brother that lives up there, that thing is a disaster waiting to happen, like the Cypress section was in Oakland, before the Loma Prieta quake brought it down.

This is one of the reasons I put up with -10 degree winters here. Our Midwest ground doesn't move that much.

How about a quake during the winter? ;-)

The 1811-1812 New Madrid, Missouri, earthquakes occurred during December, January, and February. Had they occurred today, we may have lost some unreinforced masonry buildings in Chicago, and maybe some older, substandard overpasses. I sure as hell would not want to be at the top of either the Hancock or the Sears Tower. They'd stand, but it would be a hell of a ride.

If you meant continental US then you are correct. If you meant ANY U.S. state then you are way off. The largest to date was the 1964 Prince William Sound 9.2 quake in Alaska. The 1811 New Madrid quake was "only" an 8.1 quake.

The really weird thing about the New Madrid earthquake was that it was a series of massive (7.5+) quakes that went on for months (into 1812).

I was at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) when a 3.something quake hit. Minor rumbling. I'm from Massachusetts, but I had read what to do, and was thinking about getting under the table, when it stopped. Many idiots went outside, under balconies with "gas bottles" (read iron tanks about 5" high full of high-pressure gas) chained to them. A big quake, and they fall, and take off like rockets (Mythbusters showed this). Of course, one could have still gone through the wall and gotten me under the table, but I was probably safer than being RIGHT UNDER where they'd fall.

Actually, you would be wrong. The numbers would not match up. The MM scale measures total energy, there is no upper limit to it. The local mag. and Richter scales are measurements that saturate at there top ends. They match up good at the low end but it's like saying "iron" when you mean "steel".

Answering my own question

1960, Feb 29 Agadir, Morocco 12,000 killed, 5.9
1971, Feb 9 San Fernando Valley, California, USA 65 killed 6.6
2001, Mar 24 Hiroshima, Japan 2 killed 6.4
1992, Jun 28 S California, USA 1 killed 7.5/6.6
1994, Jan 17 Northridge, California, USA 61 killed 6.8
1989, Oct 17 San Francisco Bay area, California, USA 62 killed 7.1

Actually, those aren't really "close to" the 5.8 (now revised to a 5.4) earthquake. It's a logarithmic scale, and the difference between a 5.x and a 6.x is a factor of 10, and from a 5.x to a 7.x is a factor of 100 times stronger.

The 5.9 in Morocco is in the neighborhood, but all the others are at least 10 times stronger than the one we had today.

As Bay Area residents we did have excellent timing on Oct. 17, 1989, being on vacation in Colorado on that date. Came in from a hike and turned on the TV in the middle of the news program so didn't see the location identified at first, but we were thinking, that sure looks familiar -- then we saw the Bay Bridge with a piece missing. Whoa.

Our own house is just south of SF and sits on rocky ground. You need a pickaxe to plant flowers, but it isn't going anywhere, so all that happened there was a package of spaghetti fell off a shelf. Later I met a woman at work who had been trapped in an elevator in an SF office building for several hours that day. There she was, going back to work in the same building. The kids and I were in the living room and they dove under the coffee table. I grabbed the dog as she wanted to run away. It lasted about 20 - 25 seconds. It was not as intense as the Northridge one. I lived thought the Sylmar one too. But it's been a while since one has hit and jolts the nerves a bit. My kids are a bit nervous and want to stay close to mom right now. re: #344 Spiny Norman

The really weird thing about the New Madrid earthquake was that it was a series of massive (7.5+) quakes that went on for months (into 1812).

That was why I specified the 1811 quake; it was the largest of the series. Imagine if that quake series were to happen today. Just as rebuilding from one quake is underway even more devastation happens.

This is a sure sign that we are living in the End Times. The Book of
Revelations said "there will be earthquakes", after all. QED.

Ah not quite......

Book of Revelations said "there will be earthquakes the likes of which have never been felt before", after all

Thats the bit ya gotta worry about.

Is, too. End Times, I tellsya! You should send me all your money right away (because it's harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, etc., and I'm an atheist and so am going to hell anyway, so I might as well have a good time with your money.)

Or if not the End Times, maybe it's a sign of the Good Times.

President Obama is on his way to tour the damage area.

Hopefully this isn't a precursor to someting larger.

RTLM--BTW, wasn't Northridge Jan. or Feb. 1994?

Was out there not long after and things were a mess.

Northridge was January 16, 1994. 6.8. Not fun! I went through it.

Positive vibes being sent in the hopes that all out there are OK. I have a cousin who lives about 30 miles southeast of the epicenter in Lake Elsinore. Have left a phone message for him, hopefully he and his are OK.

6.8 is getting up there. Over here you know its a goody when chimneys come down and buildings start to topple. All the rest are just reminders that we live in the "Shaky Isles"

I'm in the Mojave Desert north of San Bernardino, FWIW, and I felt it here. The earthquake was in Chino Hills, which is southwest of the Ontario International Airport (where I'm sure they felt it good).

Chatsworth is in the San Fernando Valley, about 60 miles or so to the northwest of Chino Hills, so it might have rattled windows or some such.

re: #5 RTLM

It went a long time - 40 seconds or so.

I just talked to a buddy who is a pilot and was at the LA Airport hotel. He was stunned how long it lasted. He was able to make a phone call to his spouse and say, "I'm in an Earthquake." wild.

Anyone that wants to get into the math & physics of measuring eartquakes to the Nth degree - Richter Magnitude

They had this chart that gives comparisons of earthquakes:

Richter Seismic Magnitude v/s TNT pounds + Energy Yield example

-1.5 6 ounces Breaking a rock on a lab table
1.0 30 pounds Large Blast at a Construction Site
1.5 320 pounds
2.0 1 ton Large Quarry or Mine Blast
2.5 4.6 tons
3.0 29 tons
3.5 73 tons
4.0 1,000 tons Small Nuclear Weapon
4.5 5,100 tons Average Tornado (total energy)
5.0 32,000 tons
5.5 80,000 tons Little Skull Mtn., NV Quake, 1992
6.0 1 million tons Double Spring Flat, NV Quake, 1994
6.5 5 million tons Northridge, CA Quake, 1994
7.0 32 million tons Hyogo-Ken Nanbu, Japan Quake, 1995; Largest Thermonuclear Weapon
7.5 160 million tons Landers, CA Quake, 1992
8.0 1 billion tons San Francisco, CA Quake, 1906
8.5 5 billion tons Anchorage, AK Quake, 1964
9.0 32 billion tons Chilean Quake, 1960
10.0 1 trillion tons (San-Andreas type fault circling Earth)
12.0 160 trillion tons (Fault Earth in half through center,
OR Earth's daily receipt of solar energy)

Yikes. I get knocked off-line by a dead monitor, and I come back to find all kinds of things going on. I hope all the California lizards are okay, and that this isn't a prelude to more quakes.

re: #47 Nadnerb

The Whittier quake in 1987 was a 5.9. Northridge quake was much larger. There was a large quake 7.4 or so in Landers (near Joshua Tree Monument) that was the largest I felt-even in Orange Co.

I used to live in Joshua Tree when I was a little kid, right on the San Andreas fault. The quakes would be so strong that they would knock me to the floor. I remember the Landers quake flattened the Joshua Tree bowling alley.

416 filmman35  Tue, Jul 29, 2008 8:49:23pm

I live in San Bernardino. Mild shake. My wife on the other hand was working in Corona much close to the epicenter and it was a scary bit for her. The ceiling shook like it was going to collapse, (Old building) A couple of elderly people fell. No one hurt.

I just had never heard of Disney rides being closed down before, and I lived through Northridge 1994.

re: #415 Mr Pancakes

Nobody ever mentions the 1990 Upland Earthquake. It was a 5.6 and produced some noticeable damage to this house a small few miles away. Chino Hills (14 miles away) reopened some of the old wounds, so to speak. I didn't have to ask. So I figured it was not "the big one."
