And Now: Electronic Bicycle Shifting

Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 6:23:57 pm PDT

Digital technology is on the brink of radically redefining a technology that has existed with only minor changes for more than a hundred years: Shimano Shuns Cables for Full Electronic Shifting.

Japanese parts manufacturer Shimano is launching an electronic shifting system for high-end road bikes that it claims will vastly improve performance and reduce maintenance. By replacing the conventional levers that pull wound-steel cables through protective housings with solid-state switches and rubber-coated wires, there’s no chance for road gunk to clog things up and interfere with shifting, or, for that matter, your post-ride beer.

The principle of an electronically controlled drive train is to execute perfect shifts every time, thus “reducing mental overhead,” in the words of Shimano marketing manager Devin Walton. This is a resource cyclists find in short supply during epic rides.

Thursday’s announcement that the system, called Di2, will hit shops in January 2009 settles a question first raised in 2005 when prototypes began cropping up on the bikes of select Shimano-sponsored racers in the pro peloton. The system’s development has been photographed, chronicled and Angsted over ever since.

But if the existence of electronic shifting comes as no surprise, its weigh-in certainly should. During a recent telephone interview, an industry insider who spoke on condition of anonymity stopped cold amid a why-do-we-need-this diatribe, upon learning that Di2 weighs less than Shimano’s current generation of parts. According to the company, Di2 will be 67 grams lighter than the current Dura-Ace 7800 and only 68 grams heavier than Dura-Ace 7900, the snazzy forthcoming 2009 suite of parts. “I’ll be going to hell,” said the source, who then fell silent — no doubt converting grams to ounces to fractions of a pound to the limitless advantages of such weight savings. That’s at least an extra Clif Bar.

The amazing thing about this story is how long the cable/pulley derailleur system has survived. It’s a really elegant analog solution. I can’t help thinking something will be lost in the digital translation...

Shimano plans to offer the electronic setup as an upgrade option within the 7900 group -- which is preselling for $2,600 -

It sounds nifty, but the concept of a battery powered system on a bicycle just seems wrong to me for some reason.

in chicago you really only need three speeds into the wind, wind at your back and no wind.

Now this is way cool, one of the most frustrating things about racing bikes is the manual shifting.

Louisiana - no hills, no wind - just lots of humidity and heat. When they make an A/C for a bicycle - then I'll be impressed.

True, but it doesn't have the same technological longevity of one of my favorite examples: Firearms.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, the M1911. Still going strong. And that "1911" number... well, guess what that refers to?

(Of course, the "hammer" has held up pretty well, too.)

Samuel's Colt's basic patent (1852 ?) has survived the test of time pretty well.

Mauritius, if I'm lucky. It seems to be a very difficult place to get to.

There's a history there of closing certain airports at times so political opponents can't get back into the country if I remember aright. Think it's like one flight a day max per the three or four airlines that go there.

113 Occasional Reader  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 7:27:23pm

Heh. On Penn & Teller's "Bullshit" they're doing a piece on "sensitivity training". As part of it, they have a fake sensitivity training exercise with four guys who don't know it's fake. The "trainer" demands they do silly things, like put on bras and high heels so they can "feel what it's like to be a woman in the workplace". One guy consistently refuses.

THAT'S ME! Last time I went on a corporate "retreat" - not on sensitivity, but on "team building" - the trainer tried to get us all dance meringue after our lunch break. I was the only one who said, "I decline, don't feel like dancing right now". I was the source of much "analysis" during the afternoon session.

Let me see if I get this staight:

1. Obama wants to send out another stimulus check.

Is this the same Obama who wants to tax middle-class people, gasoline, windfall profits, capital gains, and eeevil oil companies, as well as anything else he can think of?

If letting people have some of their tax money back will stimulate the economy, why is he so tax-happy?

Rhetorical question. I know the stimulus scam does screw people with medium to high incomes and redistributes it to people who don't even pay tax, and that Obama has said to the effect that "fairness" is more important than fiscal responsibility.

Still, why does no one call him on these endless contradictions?

I'll cash the check if they send me one, but it's the exact opposite of a solution to the structural problems with the economy....

Didn't WAB scoff at the first one, saying all $600.00 would buy is some earrings?

Evap cooling doesn't really do much in high humidity.

But it says you can put ice cubes in it.

Add bourbon and you won't care if you're hot...

Somewhere the other day I saw a cooling fan/sprayer for the camelback drink packs.

It's unfortunate. The money could be spent so much better. Like on actual training. I can't believe the number of people I've come across that after 10+ years at their job, still don't know how to do it.

Hell, the money could be better spent on a Brazilian masseuse to stop by my office every day at 3 pm to give me a full body massage.

MUCH better spent, come to think of it.

Yeah, Reminds me of the "poll tax" in the Honor Harrington series. Once I got the check, I officially took more in services than I paid in taxes :(

But with my husband in school, what could I do?

Why yes, yes she did. :)

I used mine to top off a small emergency fund.

I'm currently in the sweet spot where I both pay (more than my fair share of) taxes and yet got the check. I may become too "rich" soon for that, though.

If the Congress does try to buy my live with another check (it won't work), I'm going to use it to pay for my concealed carry permit.

You are correct. And the biggest training failure that I saw in 25 years experience, was failure to properly train supervisors and managers to actually supervise and manage. Many times they got the promotion, but simply continued to do their old job while approving vacation time, thus missing the boat big-time.

My last task was to establish an effective training program for supervisors / managers; we got rid of the mushy "feel good" stuff and provided them with actual situtations and how to handle them effectively and legally. We had people lined up waiting to take our classes.

Almost OT.

I've a Jeep Cherokee 4 liter I-6 that turns about 2500 rpm @ 70 mph. It's generating about 112 horsepower @ 2500 rpm and about 235 ft/lb of torque.

If there were only one more gear that would let me turn 2000 rpm @ 70 mph I'd get more than the present 20 mpg. The engine makes about 85 horsepower and 230 ft/lb of torque @ 2000 rpm so it has plenty of grunt to maintain speed on all but the toughest hills.

Why not go for the simple fix?

OT, no wait; ON THREAD!

I loved it when they put the shifters in a handlebar twist grip dealy.

However, I then had to fuss with the adjustment all the time because it would skip a gear. This wasn't a problem with the old direct setting levers, you could adjust on the fly. My guess is that this thing will be the same.
Also up thread someone mentioned dirt, oil and water environment and electronics. Well if you drive any vehicle with fuel-injection that's less than about 20 yrs old, you've got a cpu sitting under the hood. It IS possible to isolate electronics from the environment, the military does it all the time. OTOH this device seems a little light weight for much protection.

Get an overdrive, get a lot more gears. They are much better than they used to be, and there's probably a model out there for your car that is sold to automanufacturers and dealers already.

I don't really know if I have the temperament to do that. I have a low threshold for idiots and lean towards telling people to piss up a rope. (especially after carefully going through the process for an hour then finding out the idiot didn't actually plug it in as instructed.)

The interview today scared me abit. I would basically be creating the program from the floor up. Their previous hire did nothing. Absolutely 0 families signed up in 6 months.

The military recruiting position scares me a bit too, the require two contracts a month and one has to be a quality contract (meaning it has to be fully processed all the way to training. If you can't do one quality contract a month you are gone.

If no one signed up for the program, either 1) the previous hire did absolutely nothing, as you indicated, or 2) it just might mean there is no real need for the program.

Military recruiter would be interesting, I would think - almost like a sales job - but tough.

One of my assignments at work is giving direction to an IT group to design a system to help manage a pretty complicated production operation. And man, the meetings with those folks are brutal. I can't keep track of all the acronyms and buzzwords they keep dropping. I had to make a rule for the meetings. No one talks for more than 60 seconds at a time. I think that hurt some feelings. Geeze. What could be more mind numbing than a 10 minute soliloquy from a IT manager?

Pot is legal. Tax rate is a flat 10% (we would never ask for more than God Almighty does) for all citizens. Gun ownership is mandatory. We have a mutual defense pact with Israel and Missouri (Palandine is sentimental toward the ould sod). Be excellent to each other.

That is all.

Emergency inflatable splints come in handy too...

That reminds me: at Boy Scouts last night, Mr. DT, scoutmaster, hears a blood curdling scream, and discovers that one of the scouts little sisters has broken her arm in 2 places. Mr. DT does a an emergency splint with some magazines, rolling them into a U shape. It is enough for the local nurse to sit with the girl in the car and hold the magazines with ice on top while the father drives the car.

He couldn't splint a break that was so deformed.

They claim that little D with a circle around it means overdrive. I guess it does, but basically it's a four speed tranny. The older grain trucks we drove had a two speed differential, making for all practical purposes an 8 speed gearbox.

I've looked, and so far no joy on aftermarket overdrive that doesn't cost so much that I can better afford the gas.

343 razorbacker  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 8:35:36pm

Simple, once some points it out.

Let me put this as starkly as I can: What's going on today in our country isn't normal politics. In normal politics honorable people will disagree, sometimes fiercely, about how best to deal with the issues that confront us - national security, border control, healthcare, education, energy, the environment, and all the rest. What's going on today is a kind of domestic Cold War -- a seemingly endless standoff, with the occasional hard skirmish -- between those of us who see the US for what it really is, and those of us who are seeing the US through a prism. And remember, unlike real prisms these intellectual prisms -- or, if you prefer, these political prisms -- are invisible. If you're looking at the US through a political prism, you don't know you're seeing through a prism and you won't believe anyone who tries to tell you that you are.

This is why Americans who see our country and the world through a prism are impervious to facts.

It's hard to look at the world without those rose colored glasses. Beer googles substitute for some.

I see people are wandering around the topic. I think it's a great idea. Having read a little history about bicycles it's about time tech improvements have moved the other way. I hope it's a hell of a lot easier to adjust the gearing after a tune up than the current systems. I don't care about the weight issue too much, just the ease of shifting. I guess I will wait a year or so after it comes out to see how it's working out.

BTW If it wasn't for bicycles the car as we know it wouldn't exist. Everything from drive trains to wheels to roads were made possible by bikes.

Is there a CVT for bicycles? (continuously variable transmission) There are a number of CVT designs for automobiles. On a bike that would mean the gear ratio would increase while climbing and drop when you leveled off. It would depend on how hard you were pedaling as well. That would solve the battery problem. The CVT wouldn't need one.

That's not exactly true. Longer isn't a problem, just use a shorter driveshaft. Wider isn't a problem, there's room to spare. Heavier isn't the problem, just make the cargo load limit less. And if you've ever played around with putting different engine/transmissions in various cars you know that there are bolt up plates that let you put darn near anything into anything.

Jeep just didn't.

Hell, they could have used the 4 Low differential for an economy package and sold even more of the things. Most of the soccor moms/yuppie types never shift into 4 wheel drive anyway. Or need to.

Might be able to re-gear your pumpkin, or put in a higher geared rear end.

(One of the fixes when a hot rod has torque, but not enough high end speed).

That's what I'm thinking. The torque curve is basically flat. The reason those I6 4 liters lasted on the market as long as they did was the engine makes almost full torque at just above idle. Ideal for off-roading without racing the engine all the time.

I got an interesting call from some hack representing the Donk Party here in my county. The guy said he was just calling registered voters to see if they were considering voting for The Messiah. When I told him I'd definitely be voting for McCain in November, he his tone changed dramatically. He icily replied something to the effect "Well, I certainly hope you feel you're making the right decision". I really wanted to let him have it, but I simply shot back "Oh, I'm absolutely certain I am" and hung up on the bastid. There was no mistaking the disdain on the other end of the line. These Obama minions are out for political blood.

Saw one advertised on tv about a decade ago. Works on centripetal or centrifugal force. All on the rear hub. Seemed pretty cool to me but I was still old fashioned back then.

re: #357 razorbacker

That's not exactly true. Longer isn't a problem, just use a shorter driveshaft. Wider isn't a problem, there's room to spare. Heavier isn't the problem, just make the cargo load limit less. And if you've ever played around with putting different engine/transmissions in various cars you know that there are bolt up plates that let you put darn near anything into anything.

Jeep just didn't.

Hell, they could have used the 4 Low differential for an economy package and sold even more of the things. Most of the soccor moms/yuppie types never shift into 4 wheel drive anyway. Or need to.

I realize that anything can be shoe horned into a vehicle. What I was referring to was from cost/engineering pov i.e. cafe standards, seating rearrangement due to changing floor pan, weight distribution and extra cost of transmission.

I know how you feel, I've got a 5-spd Ranger and at cruise I always have the urge to shift one more gear up going by the revs i'm putting out. It's only a 4 banger but has a bit of pep and at highway spds could really use another gear.

I had a 4 cylinder Ranger w/5 speed. Worked fine in the flatlands, but driving it up here was like rowing a boat.

Jeep used at least 3 different trannys that I know of, including one bought from Toyota that was also used in Lexuses (Lexuii?). The primary thing for them was trying to keep the Cherokee priced around 20 grand for as long as possible. They all looked the same, but varied greatly from the beginnings to the last ones in 2001 or 2002, whenever it was.

Off road and towing capability don't typically go together with fuel economy. But there are new hybrid vehicles that do combine the two.

And keep this in mind. To increase fuel economy from 15 to 20 mpg will save the same amount of gasoline as increasing a small car from 30 to 60 mpg. (Do the math in gallons per mile, not miles per gallon.)

HEY NOAM! Well my Oral Surgeon who IS a damn fine oral surgeon, can't possibly pull the one tooth that has to be pulled (the other one may have to be pulled later on) until near the end of August!
And last December I had a stent put in the artery in my right leg - just above the knee and this morning I felt a real sharp pain just about where that stent is. Called Cardiovascular surgeon, he isn't gonna be in until Monday and I may have to see him Monday (up in Charlotte) if it gets any worse at all - if it gets much worse between now and then, then I've been instructed by his PA to go to the ER down here and have them do a doppler sonogram on that stent to see if I pulled it, or if it's clogged up. And if it has, then I have to go to Charlotte immediately to the same hospital's ER and someone from my cardio's group will either: do another angioplasty to try to fix it or they'll do a by-pass on that spot - how they would do that I have NO effin' idea.

re: #417 realwest

I know how you feel (somewhat; no stent problems). I had an estimate done for my teeth in '06 = $14k. Ouch. Luckily I had the money. Unluckily after I had the work done, business property was bought and company put on notice - close in '07. double ouch.

Glad I spent the money though. First time in about 15 years that some tooth in my mouth isn't hurting me.

That Stent might not be as painful but I would advise getting that looked at stat! bad circulation = clots = stroke. NOT GOOD.

You have loyalty to your dr. but 4 wks is ridiculous if you are in serious pain. Tell him to find you/recommend substitute TOOT SWEET!

448 Palandine  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 9:27:41pm

I have a Jeep Liberty that I love.

On Sunday I had a flat tire. As I was going through my pre-change procedures, I remembered about setting the parking brake.

I reached into the Liberty and, unthinking, pulled STRAIGHT UP on the lever that puts the Jeep in 4WD instead of the lever for the parking brake. Yeek.

After changing the tire, I drove off, putting the car back in 2WD. Still, the PART TIME 4WD light won't go off on the indicator panel.

Took it to my mechanic. The Jeep talked to their diagnostic computer, and apparently it's just instrumentation, and a Google search shows that more than one person has had this problem. No big deal, but it's the first complaint I've had in years of owning this groovy vehicle.

re: #299 razorbacker

They claim that little D with a circle around it means overdrive. I guess it does, but basically it's a four speed tranny. The older grain trucks we drove had a two speed differential, making for all practical purposes an 8 speed gearbox.

I've looked, and so far no joy on aftermarket overdrive that doesn't cost so much that I can better afford the gas.

I've got one of those older grain trucks with the two-speed rear axle. The speeds are slow, and slower. The idea was to get you more grunt for pulling heavy loads on a hill, not for sailing down the Interstate.

Your cheapest out on the Jeep would probably be to put numerically-lower ratio gearsets in both front and rear axles. Go from, say, a set of 3.50's to a set of 3.07's.

I went to some effort to find the perfect bike for me, a kind that I really had to search to locate, and it will still be useful after an EMP, LOL! It has all the gears I need: zero. Unless you count gears like 'pedal slowly,' 'pedal faster,' and 'pedal very fast!'

Damn what a cycle (and all y'all didn't think I'd find a way back to the thread topic!) knee hurts, grind teeth, grind teeth and "bad" tooth hurts like a mofo, get up to walk around and that take my mind off the damn tooth and puts it back on stent/leg problem. Bwah! I think my pedal very fast gear is about as fast as my dog will trot. Can't do it nearly as long as he can, either! So I've decided that since I use every excuse not to exercise, even by biking (it's too hot, it's too humid, it's too cold, whatever), that I'm going to get in shape by fooling myself. I won't be exercising, which I hate... I'll be dancing, which I love!

Maybe I won't be slow and heavy forever, if my strategery works.

re: #463 jcm I really have to say that modern science is just a marvel, ya know? Modern medical science is, too. 10-15 years ago they wouldn't have had that stent procedure they did in my leg - and the first time I'd know I had it woulda been when I had a stroke or heart attack.
Just incredible - water on Mars means that there pretty much definitely is, was or will be life on Mars.

Charles, I thought the Nuvinci gearless hub already made derailleurs and so forth obsolete.

The reviews of this "continuous transmission" make it sound like a total revolution in bicycles.

I guess that, since it's slightly heavier than the old-fashion system, it's still not used for professional racing bikes. But once the engineers get it lighter and lighter, the bad old days of gears will be gone forever.

477 chuba  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 10:15:28pm

Have been ridin bikes for some 29 years, and during this time have seen the whole thing evolve from six, through seven, then eight, nine, ten (overkill as a number of gear combos are almost duplicated) and now this.
A lot of this stuff is just plain superfluous gizmo crap designed to entrap the gullible wannabee fraternity. Hell some pro teams aren't outfitted with all this stuff - so sure as hell some little weekend warrior ain't gonna justify it.
And now this electronic gimcracky.
As an old cycling buddie involved in the world of electronics (guidance systems etc) one said to me: 'do ya want it electronic or do ya want it to work'

485 Arbalest  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 12:35:47am

The electronic shifting sounds neat, but I'd settle for a fully-suspended roadbike with a Rohloff hub in the BB with belt drive to the rear wheel, and disc brakes. For anti-lock effect, have the rear caliper mounted on on a shaft, so when it moves with the rotor, it actuates the (normally-mounted) front caliper.

"I can’t help thinking something will be lost in the digital translation..."

Me too Charles,
Today I rode my early '80s vintage, Columbus steel, entirely analog Colnago Super that I have owned since it was new. No need to program Campagnolo super record... there are shifters on the down tube. (Just like they are supposed to be.)
I may be a purist Luddite, but if it was good enough for Eddy Merckx it is more then good enough for me. Besides, no one ever accused Merckx of taking anabolic steroids.

487 Call me Infidel  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 1:37:40am

Good grief $2600 for the privelege of an electronic shift. I think I will stick with analogue as well. Reynolds 531 for me as well and Campagnolo super record. As the jocks say "Ya cannae whack it"

Yeah, like the freedom of not having to worry about batteries. Or the ability to fix every problem yourself without taking your bike to the mechanic.

490 6pat6  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:23:58am
The amazing thing about this story is how long the cable/pulley derailleur system has survived. It’s a really elegant analog solution. I can’t help thinking something will be lost in the digital translation...

Isn't it always? Vinyl records to CD is a perfect example of that.

491 hydrocarbon hank  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:56:52am

Fascinating....but when it comes to cycling, it's the bike is only as good as the engine pushing it.

Are there any cyclists around? I recently made the transition from distance running to cycling, and I am amazed at how many overweight people are competitive cyclists. I recently rode a 150 mile race and was shocked by the number of people who finished before me that were overweight by anyones standards. You don't see too many competitive runners carrying a spare tire, but many cyclists do (I'm talking about the local road races...not the tour de France).

492 Sean  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 8:06:51am

I can wait for it to cheapen up. I have too many good riding old bikes anyways!
Shimano has been running the planned obsolescence bit tooooooo long for me to think "I gotta get that!"

BTW- 10 cogs in the back? Most riders never use some of them.

re: #353 Mich-again

Is there a CVT for bicycles? (continuously variable transmission) There are a number of CVT designs for automobiles. On a bike that would mean the gear ratio would increase while climbing and drop when you leveled off. It would depend on how hard you were pedaling as well. That would solve the battery problem. The CVT wouldn't need one.

Now that I've read the whole thread, I see that zombie has pointed out that a CVT hub for bicycles already exists. But here's a video.

495 wrenchwench  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 9:07:50am

496 Noah's Arrrgh  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 9:53:01am

I have a Bianchi Milano with an Shimano Nexus 8 speed internal hub. One of my all time favorite bikes. Anyway, there's a version of the Milano with the Shimano Auto-D 4 speed internal hub. It's done electronically either in manual or automatic mode. That's right. A bike with an automatic transmission. It consists of a front wheel dynamo to provide power, a CPU and a rear wheel hub set.

Is there anything Shimano can't do?

497 Albigensian  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 11:23:17am

It's difficult not to be skeptical-- after all, a great many bicycle "automatic transmissions" have been announced over the years, yet none has had any real success.

But if it works, it also would not surprise me if electronic devices like this are banned from bicycle racing.

There still might be a nice market among serious recreational users.

Now, if someone could just make a roll-flat tire with the same rolling resistance as a high-pressure pneumatic and with no excess weight, that would surely be appreciated.

And a cure for saddle soreness? Well, some things are probably beyond science and technology.

498 kindadifferent  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:38:35pm

For Baby Boomers with hand strength and/or mobility problems who ride road bikes, this is a godsend. I have a customer who rides a lot but is in her 60's and has wrist and hand pain but is determined to join her buddies on long rides so this is great news! The extra battery you have to carry will add to the weight....

Really. I can see it now. 100 mile ride at the 50 mile point and the puter in the damn thing crashes. Instead of an adjustment or new cable you need a motherboard.

Since there is no team car following me with a spare bike I will stick with cables!
