A Big IE7 Problem on the Web - Update: Sitemeter Responsible

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 6:56:09 pm PDT

I’ve confirmed that there’s some kind of problem on the Internet, that only seems to affect users of the Internet Explorer 7 web browser. Attempting to browse to many sites results in an ‘Operation Aborted’ error. No information about the problem elsewhere yet ... stay tuned.

UPDATE at 8/1/08 7:20:27 pm:

It appears to be related to Sitemeter.com — browsing to their web site with Internet Explorer 7 produces the error too.

UPDATE at 8/2/08 5:47:13 pm:

Site Meter now reports all systems go.

3 Eyes Wide Open  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:57:33pm

Would it be related to the cache poisoning problem uncovered last week?

Yep, I'm coming across the problem on many sites
Hot Air, Eject Eject Eject, etc.

Firefox FTW!

I'm not getting what that means?

9 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:58:59pm

And so it begins.

(I don't know what, but, you know, "it")

10 jetprop  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:59:00pm

Call the Messiah! he's the one we've been waiting for to fix the internet.

11 sbaxter  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:59:01pm

Using AVANT browser, Instapundit gives the message, LGF, not so much!

13 eff plus  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:59:31pm

Just happened at Hot Air too. before it was just Jihad Watch. This one's still ok. Weird. Yeah, ie7

14 Thanos  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:59:42pm

Is it just blogs?

17 Mazeman  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:00:19pm

The problem has been noted elsewhere.

It's called "Microsoft".

18 Thanos  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:00:27pm

I also closed down, stripped prophylactics, and rebooted, still exhibiting the same behaviour.

Are you being sarcastic? Or serious? It's hard to tell on these here interwebs, since I can't see facial expressions or hear tonal subtleties.

All of the think tank sites in my side bar, and newsites load fine.

21 willowone  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:01:25pm

haha are they trying to select our reading material?

22 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:01:27pm

Since I'm watching Zulu at the moment, I can't shake the feeling that the IE7 problem is the prelude to a Zulu attack.

23 noshariaincanada  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:01:35pm
there’s some kind of problem on the Internet

rotating title, what?

24 Arbalest  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:01:36pm

Sometimes the "Operation Aborted" can itself be aborted by clicking the Stop button on IE after the webpage is displayed. Sometimes the popup happens too soon.

I wonder about the cache poisioning problem; could it be an infected advertisement instead? I had a nmber of suspicious cookies that I deleted; yieldmanager or some similar name. Perhaps dumping all cookies will make a difference.

25 winston06  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:02:03pm

I have no problem with IE7 whatsoever but thanks to this web site I am now a big Firefox user.

27 HoosierHoops  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:02:10pm

re: #3 Eyes Wide Open

Would it be related to the cache poisoning problem uncovered last week?

I doubt it.. That issue is dealing with DNS servers across the net.

28 willowone  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:02:28pm

Yep. And Stanley Baker. Caine doing an upper-class English accent for once.

32 Mazeman  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:03:33pm

No problems on Safari.

33 SDC  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:03:58pm

Obviously, global warming at work. (Watching "Zulu" as well).

34 Split  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:04:28pm

Probably just China preparing for the Olympics.

35 jetprop  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:04:28pm

re: #3 Eyes Wide Open

Would it be related to the cache poisoning problem uncovered last week?

Not likely; DNS isn't browser specific.

39 NonNativeTexan  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:05:34pm

The error message has the /. at the end, as if it doesn't get
read permissions to the directory. ( or thinks it doesn't have
permissions)

40 Cartman  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:06:24pm

Did anyone else here receive Win XP SP3 through Win Update today? I did, and installed it. I wonder if there was a browser patch within the OS update?

45 MamaAJ  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:06:59pm

I was wondering if it had something to do with ads, but Beldar.blogs.com won't come up and he doesn't really have ads. He does have a link to Amazon, which many blogs have...?

I think we may be looking at the first stages of the first-ever collective user error.

There's a rip in the space-time continuum due any moment.

I've IE7 and I'm doing just fine. Finer than a frog's hair split three ways, in fact. If I were any finer, I'd have to be BHO.

51 Eyes Wide Open  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:08:23pm

#24 Arbalest,
I was able to initially get Instapundit and Hotair before the 'Operation aborted' message. Subsequent attempts only generated a blank screen followed by the popup. It sounds that these web sites 'may' be infected with some sort of payload.

52 sbmama  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:08:24pm

Interesting problem. I just tried to log onto Michelle Malkin and got the actual home page but then was told IE couldn't open the site. Odd. Is this happening at Daily Kos too?

53 ted  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:08:29pm

54 NonNativeTexan  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:08:43pm

Also got a "pay pal" error, maybe it is the pay pal add.

55 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:08:53pm

Speaking of "intermediate fossils", I've never understood how the bolt-action, metal cartridge, single shot rifle came into being. You'd think that, with the precedent of the Winchester and Henry repeaters, they'd have said "hey, let's add a magazine".

56 willowone  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:09:01pm

re: #36 Sharmuta

Oh, Okay. FTW is an abbreviation of F*ck The World. Normally this wouldn't really apply, but in the blog/forum world adding "FTW" to the end of something, like "Cold beer FTW", translates loosely to "Cold beer rules".

You're most likely to see that on gaming forums, many of which I lurk on.

61 mpw280  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:09:52pm

Oh come on you can't blame global warming/climate change, you have to blame chimpy mchitlerburton, he messed up Al Goricals interweb thingy. The O'mesiah will have to discuss the problem with terrorists to figure out who to surrender to in order to fix the problem. mpw

62 CyanSnowHawk  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:09:56pm

I wouldn't be surprised to see some advertisement be the cause of the problem. Lefty blogs usually get lefty ads, and if the troublesome one is a conservative ad, that would explain the hits on conservative blogs. (I know only a little about how this all works, so this is at best a minimally informed guess.)

63 TheWasteLand  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:10:03pm

I posted this in the previous topic

It seems that IE 7 operation aborts when sitemeter tries to load on the affected sites. Sites that don't use sitemeter are okay.

81 MamaAJ  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:14:10pm

Thanos, I got there, so it could very well be Sitemeter.

I went to Kos, held my breath and clicked on a couple links on the Blog roll. Crooks and Liars didn't work either. So it's not just the right side.

Sitemeter would explain why my personal blog works but others on blogspot don't.

re: #55 Occasional Reader

Speaking of "intermediate fossils", I've never understood how the bolt-action, metal cartridge, single shot rifle came into being. You'd think that, with the precedent of the Winchester and Henry repeaters, they'd have said "hey, let's add a magazine".

You have to remember that this was immediately after most armies had just switched from percussion muzzle-loaders, so, for them, something like the Martini-Henry was itself a huge step forward, and it wasn't until the 1880s-1890s that repeating rifles with a practical amount of power (at least for military use) were developed; the Russians did use some Winchesters prior to the turn of the century, but lever-actions were seen to be "weaker", "short-range" guns, because they have springy actions.

I'm sure people saw and remember who did what. Some are so deliberately rude that even when they are right they are still wrong. It weakens defendable positions and stops exploration. And I am no softy on debating.

Balancing a good habit with a bad habit is a good thing, if taken in moderation.

Wasn't there a big split in the IE7 development team on what to do with non-standard HTML? Something about the traditionalists wanting to work with it and the others wanted to let it blow up the page. Don't remember how it came out but could that be it?

I played for bit early on, but after UO online most of them seemed pretty tame and I quit.

Some are hit and miss. Ones I played

SWG - Lots to see, little to do
CoH/CoV - Pretty good till they nerfed everything and server issues made the game lag all the time
Tabula Rasa - Good Engine and reasonably fun, but peters out after lvl 30 as you're just running the same things over and over. Would have been better as a pure FPS system.
WoW - Usually pretty good. High end content you need to get a guild for. I've been playing in cycles lately. On 3-4 months, take 1-2 months off.

QUICK FIX! QUICK FIX! QUICK FIX!

If you're suffering these problems in IE7, add "*.sitemeter.com" to your list of restricted sites. That will force IE to reject the bad code. I was having the same problems and now they're gone.

Procedure:

1. Open menu item: Tools...Options
2. Click "Security" tab
3. Select "Restricted Sites"
4. Click "Sites" button
5. Under "Add this website to this zone", enter "*.sitemeter.com" without the quotes
6. Click "Add" button
7. Close windows using "Close" or "OK", not "Cancel".

After that, and without a restart, Sitemeter's thwartage is thwarted!

BTW, junkscience.com is also affected.

I'm using Safari for this post. Not saying I don't like it. It's very clean. But it doesn't do that scroll-wheel thingy on my mouse pad.

Is there anything else I can do?

re: #309 WayDownSouthInBama

Well,I tried it but Hot Air is still a no go. But then again, I am on dial-up. I'm used to the Internet not working.

Check what you entered and make sure it's exactly " *.sitemeter.com ", without the quotes. A bunch of pre-existing entries in my list began with " *.. " (two dots) and that didn't work.

Also, make sure you entered it as a restricted site and NOT a trusted site. There has been some confusion.

325 Catttt  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 8:34:03pm

re: #305 Sharmuta

Except you just okay'd a site that's problematic. Are you sure you want to trust sitemeter? As Killgore said above- there are concerns with them.

No - you RESTRICT a site by putting it in the - er - restricted zone.

You can manually add an entry to the Restricted Zone or use either of the applications listed below (highly recommended) which contains most of the major ad servers, hijackers, dialers and parasites. This will help prevent installs of unwanted software. This also greatly reduces the amount of unwanted pop-ups!

New to Internet Explorer is the ability to add IP addresses to the Restricted Zone. You'll find many times these parasites use an IP address rather than a URL. They do this to avoid being blocked by an entry in a HOSTS file. However you can still add a layer of protection to your system by adding those IP addresses to the Restricted Zone.

Editors Note: adding a large amount of sites to the Restricted Zone in Windows can cause slow-down problems in Outlook/Windows Mail and possibly other applications. You can reduce the amount of entries by the use of Wildcards, so rather than adding a huge amount of DoubleClick entries, you can use (example) *.doubleclick.net

Well....

Union leaders said implementing the holiday was important for the nearly 700 Muslims, many of them Somalis, who work at the plant that employs a total of 1,200 people.

That's a pretty sizable majority. I suppose they could have cut something other that Labor Day but it's democracy in action. I can't really find a good reason to oppose it. If that majority belonged to Jews they could axe Christmas and take a day for Hanuka off.

I hope they give their Jewish employees Yom Kippur instead.
If I worked there, and they gave one religious holiday instead of a secular one, I'd insist on mine, and file a discrimination complaint.

On a similar note, Agriprocessors, the kosher meat processing plant that was hit by an INS raid a while ago, is now hiring Somalis to replace the illegal Guatemalans. Aren't Somalis Muslim? The kind that won't touch a wrapped package of pork if they're working at a cash register?

Plus, it is easier to convert a muzzle loader to a single shot breech loader than a magazine fed rifle. Also, with the iron wire wrapped base for the early cartridge cases, it made it a lot easier to remove a jammed case due to overheating or a dirty chamber. The earliest cases were rimfire which were weak and easily torn by extractors. The balloon head case was stronger but still subject to extraction problems.

QUICK FIX! QUICK FIX!

SEC extends short selling curb through August 12

U.S. securities regulators have extended through August 12 an emergency rule aimed at curbing abusive short selling in the stocks of 19 major financial firms, including mortgage giants Freddie Mac (FRE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Fannie Mae (FNM.N: Quote, Profile, Research).

The Securities and Exchange Commission rule is part of an agency crackdown on possible market manipulation that some blame for steep declines in the shares of financial companies.

The emergency measure, that first took effect July 21 and will not be further extended, requires investors to borrow a stock before selling it short and to deliver the stock on the settlement date.

I don't get it. Anyone?

re: #343 Kosh's Shadow

They are muslims, and are legal. They came there from Minneapolis, which has the largest number of Somalis in the US..and the wages are what made them move to Iowa...

I remember many years ago that our kosher butcher had a number of muslim customers who wore head scarves and jeans. They were actually friendly, but this goes back decades. There was no halal meat available.

Now? Especially near our kosher butcher in Brooklyn, there are areas with nothing but halal butchers and also arab stores, in the Midwood section..and there are kosher butchers and restaurants and groceries, etc, surrounded by arab neighborhoods. These arabs glare at us, and try to take over the sidewalk.

A very different world.

Oooo...I'm still running XP so I can only hope our screens look the same.

It defaults to the lgf website simply because you're currently on that page. Replace the lgf URL in the Add box with *.sitemeter.com and click the Add button. It should then appear in the box below. The box below may have hundreds of entries already, so you might need to scroll around if you want to double-check your addition.

If you inadvertantly added lgf to the restricted list, you need to find it in the list, select it, then click the Remove button.

How do I get FF2 back?

FireFox 3 should have installed in its own directory. Look for the FF 2 directory and find the icon in there. Be sure you go into options and make FF2 your default browser.
If you installed FF3 on top of FF2 then the FF website should have an "older versions" section on it somewhere.

Aw, was I the only one forced to sing the song in like 2nd grade music class that went: "Make new friends/But keep the old/One is silver and the other gold....."?

The only person I dropped because of moonbatism was this dude who started buying into all the 9/11 conspiracy theories. It's one thing to start sounding like a moonbat. It's a whole other level when you start disrespecting the victims of 9/11 by spewing that nonsense. But I really mostly just felt sad for him. I asked him if a plane didn't hit the Pentagon, what happened to all the people on that flight they said hit the Pentagon? The ones making phone calls to their loved ones saying they'd been hijacked. He said they were murdered by the government at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. Yeah, I just felt really sorry for him while hearing him say these things, because he's a nice guy outside of all this nuttery he's fallen into since 9/11. I guess I should've tried to persuade him that he was buying into a load of rubbish, but I walked away.

From Hotair comments:

Obama’s flip-flops in no particular order (from jgapinoy.blogspot.com):
1) was against 1990s welfare reform, now for it
2) was for Washington, DC gun ban, now against it
3) was against death penalty for any reason, now favors it for child rapists and Osama Bin Laden
4) was against NAFTA, now for it
5) was against Cuban embargo, now for it
6) promised to accept campaign spending limits/matching funds if McCain did, now refuses to participate
7) was “strongly” against FISA, a few days ago voted for it
8) was against homosexual marriage, now supports it (a rare leftward move)
9) was vocally against displaying displaying patriotism via flag lapel pins, now wears one
10) was against Jerusalem being the undivided capital of Israel, now for it
11) was for chatting unconditionally with Iran’s President AckMyDumbJihad, now for conditions
12) had promised never to “disown” Reverend Wright, now Wright is disowned
13) for 20 years was for family’s membership in hateful so-called church “Trinity”, now against it
14) was for mental health exceptions for partial-birth abortions, now against them
15) voted against laws protecting abortion survivors, now for such laws
16) claimed to be for several town hall-style debates with Senator McCain, but his campaign later said only one, and only at a time no one would watch (Independence Day)
17) was promising to never use negative ads, now using them
18) was against President Bush’s faith-based initiatives, now for them
19) demanded that Bush boycott Olympic opening ceremonies, now he’s buying ads during those ceremonies that financially support them
20) was for pulling troops out of Iraq per timetable, with little or no regard to conditions, now “entirely conditions-based”
21) two years ago, promised to bring assistance to impoverished African school where 10 of his relatives attend, but nothing yet
22) said in June that “my party” wouldn’t take money from registered lobbyists or PACs, but his campaign has accepted $15,000 from lobbyists
23)was against all offshore drilling, now for it as long as it’s “carefully circumscribed”

Stratfor also was hearing the same rumors, so I don't know about the bogus documents being targeted because CBS had its Rathergate mess.

The terrorists have tried misdirection in the past, and may again be trying to do so because of recent successes.

Then again, it could be legitimate - but unless we get confirmation from US sources, I'd take with a grain of salt - as I note in my update.

It's also interesting to see how Mehsud is now injecting himself prominently into the al Qaeda infrastructure. He's clearly making himself the focus of the Islamists, and that's bad news for the Pakistanis. And Afghans.

re: #444 funky chicken

Obama's figuring that even if Congress lifts its ban and authorizes states to choose whether to drill or not, many will choose not to allow it.

Expect that if the decision to lift the ban is made that WA, OR, NJ, NY, CT, MA, ME, RI and possibly DE and MD restrict or outright oppose drilling.

CA would be too close to call as would FL. LA, TX, AL, and MS would likely support drilling offshore.

re: #451 lawhawk

We went to Gulf Shores, AL 3 years ago, and you could see the drilling things off in the distance. We met a nice family, and the dad told us that the best fishing was around the platforms. I thought he was pulling our legs, but then I started reading about the whole rigs to reefs thing.

I recently saw a news article where NJ GOPers were criticizing McCain for supporting offshore drilling. Sigh. It was all based on tourism/Jersey shore/etc. Those beaches in Gulf Shores were nicer than the ones in Ocean City, NJ, at least in my recollection. When I was a kiddie my folks used to take me to Corpus Christie, TX. I'm pretty sure those beaches are still in use after decades of offshore drilling. sigh

It ain't just an IE7 problem. Normally I use Firefox as my primary (but not default) browser, but for a few sites I use IE6 (I am still a Win98SE user) and I occasionally get the operation aborted error.

First Vista was an abortion that should never have released, and now IE turns out to be a software bug that refuses to die. I am starting to rethink of wanting to own MS stock, and/or wanting to work for The Bill.
