Dead Man Found in Denver Hotel with Large Amount of Possible Cyanide

Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 4:57:45 pm PDT

A troubling development in Denver: Man Dead, Large Amount Of Possible Cyanide Found.

DENVER (CBS4) — It has the makings of international intrigue. Less than two weeks before the Democratic National Convention a man has been found dead in a Denver hotel room with a container of what authorities initially suspect to be the deadly poison cyanide.

Adding to the intrigue is that the dead man, Saleman Abdirahman Dirie, 29, appears to be from outside the U.S. No passport was found on Dirie, who is believed to have entered the country from Canada.

A large container of a white powdery substance was found in the man’s room on the fourth floor of The Burnsley hotel at 10th and Grant. Tests are now being done by the Denver Police Crime Lab to determine exactly what the substance is. The tests could take days.

It’s believed Dirie died from something other than the substance that was in the container.

The classic "Prussian blue" reaction only takes a few minutes to run, and would be presumptive proof of cyanide salts.

If the guy were killed (on purpose) by his associates as a "lab rat" they'd be unlikely to leave a large amount of the questionable substance present (unless it was discovered quickly by a third party).

I can think of LOTS of questions to ask here:
a. Who is this guy?
b. Why do the investigators think its cyanide? What is it really?
c. Why do the investigators think he was killed by something other than cyanide?
d. How did he die? Was there an autopsy?
e. Where did he get this "stuff"?
f. Are there associates and if so, where are they?
g. How was this scene discovered?

And I expect no answers, because the Feds will (probably appropriately) put a lid on this thing to help further the investigation, and prevent a panic.

re: #91 Salem

I don't think so.

Prussian blue is the characteristic bright blue color you get when cyanide salts are mixed with an iron solution (I think Ferric sulfate, but don't hold me to that). IIRC, that compound isn't toxic, just the cyanide salt.

Individuals poisoned by cyanide may emit the characteristic "almond" smell, and they will appear reddish or flushed.

As a very simple explanation, this individual may simply have committed suicide using cyanide. Updated story here:

Possible cyanide poisoning victim from Ottawa

DENVER (AP) — Authorities say a man who died of possible cyanide poisoning at a Denver hotel was a 29-year-old from Ottawa.

The medical examiner's office said Tuesday that an autopsy is planned on the body of Saleman Abdirahman Dirie. Officials say he may have died of cyanide poisoning.

Dirie's body was discovered Monday in a hotel room and a hazardous-materials team found a bottle of white powder in the room. Authorities say they are trying to determine what the powder is.

Police say Dirie had been dead for several days, but foul play is not suspected.

Cyanide is a fast-acting chemical that prevents the body from processing oxygen. It is used in manufacturing, metallurgy and pest extermination.

It would probably take about an hour to figure it out, including time to bring a chemical ID kit. Or they just take the stuff back to the crime lab. Denver's a big city, so they will have a good one.

I read this headline a couple of days back, but there was no ID on the dead guy.

So, are there any characteristics of cyanide that make them suspect that was what was found?

Suicide by cyanide? How ... swashbuckling. Or something.

And the guy was dead for several days before they found him. I doubt they could detect any trace of almond odor, if you know what I mean.

The Denver Coroner's Office found no obvious cause of death, and tests to determine cyanide poisoning will take at least a week and possibly longer, said chief deputy coroner Michelle Weiss-Samaras.

She said that investigators found a small bottle of sodium cyanide, "which you can buy" she said.

Cyanide is a highly poisonous, fast-acting chemical compound available from a number of sources, including medical research and mining, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Denver police said Dirie had apparently been dead for several days when he was found dead in a suite Monday morning.

After the coroner's office said cyanide might be a factor, investigators returned a few hours later and found the powder thought to cyanide, though tests to prove that were incomplete Tuesday, according to the FBI.

Ah. Well, i read once that the guy who (inadvertently) discovered cyanide, Johannes Dipple, was blue when they found his body. The article attributed this discoloration to cyanide poisoning, but who knows? Dipple was actually looking for some kind of elixir, making his discovery a spectacular failure in that respect. It would be pretty obvious upon autopsy. CN mucks up your cellular respiration. It blocks the pathway that takes the energy from the Krebs Cycle so your cells can make ATP. NO ATP, no life.

[Link: members.aol.com...]

Read it all. Good stuff! (full disclosure I have a master's in biochemistry)

The Krebs cycle takes place in the matrix, producing NADH and FADH2 (not shown)
The NADH (and the FADH2) transfers its hydrogens to the ETC, where they are split into H+ ions and electrons
The ETC acts as a H+ ion pump, pulling H+s into the intermembrane space
This causes intermembrane space pH to drop to 7 and raises matrix pH to 8
"Pump" may not be the best term for the hydrogen carrier, since this is not an active transport consuming energy from ATP
The electrons are conducted laterally through the membrane from one ETC complex to the next, each time donating some of their energy to "pump" H+ ions (for more details see text diagram on p. 172)
Finally the de-energized electrons are combined with hydrogen ions and oxygen to produce water in the matrix
This reaction is catalyzed by cytochrome oxidase
The reaction is inhibited by cyanide, which is why cyanide is a poison

Being a bio-chem major we did all kinds of testing on stuff as lab work. One the things was looking at carcinogens in normal vs. organic produce. A lot of the organic stuff had elevated levels of natural carcinogenic compounds.

It seems plants will respond to insect attack by producing more toxins, organic plants have a higher level of insect attack.

Now none of the levels were a health risk, but it was a entertaining conclusion.

If it is a solid, then it is a cyanide salt, probably potassium cyanide. Besides slipping it into food or water, it could be used by mixing it with acid to make hydrogen cyanide gas.

Thanks, the article was amazingly thin on details. Since they think the guy died of something else, though, I'm still curious why they think the powder is cyanide. As others have noted, there are so many other possibilities.

Are they assuming that he's a terrorist based on his name and being in the country illegally, therefore the substance is highly questionable? Not an unreasonable line of thinking, but why couldn't it be anthrax or other poisons? Did he have literature dealing with cyanide toxicity? Was the reporter trying to make the story bigger than it really is to sell more papers?

As threatening as this sounds, it's still the MSM. Until some more facts come out, I'm going to be skeptical.

Cyanide - a review (PDF)

Read all the way to page 6. Good stuff!

LOL

After cyanide is absorbed, it is rapidly distributed through the body. The majority of
cyanide in the body is protein bound (60%). Cyanide reacts reversibly but with high
affinity with metals such as the ferric ion (Fe3+) and cobalt. Cyanide also reacts with
sulfur containing compounds.
The primary effect of cyanide poisoning results from inhibition of the metal-containing
enzymes. The critical interaction appears to be inhibition of the enzyme cytochrome
oxidase a3 (containing iron) within the mitochondria. This enzyme is a necessary part of
the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As a result, aerobic oxidative
metabolism and phosphorylation are compromised causing cellular hypoxia. Other
metabolic processes continue and the rate of glycolysis is increased markedly. The
pyruvate that is produced can no longer be used and is now reduced to lactate.

re: #130 mossley

My neighbors have decided that they are going "organic" because it is "safer". They were out there spraying the hell out of their vegetable plants, and I asked them if they had bothered to read the warnings on the bottle. They were aghast - why would there be a warning on a bottle of organic spray? I pointed out there were plenty of deadly poisons that were completely natural.

Someone on the radio was talking about organic pesticides and pointed out that cobra venom is organic, so "organic" doesn't mean "safe".

I'll highlight the key word in the article's first sentence:

It's amazing that people so blindly buy into marketing. There is nothing to suggest that organic = healthier/better/safer or any of the other feel-good modifiers used to describe it.

What's amusing is the rate these neighbors were spraying their plants - even if they were using a relatively safe spray, they were still drowning the plants in chemicals. Any "safety" their spray offered was countered by their application. I really doubt that their cells know how to tell the difference between an organic and a manufactured chemical.

Of course, my tomatoes are over six feet tall now, and I've been picking them since early July. They haven't had any ripen yet. And it's not like I douse my plants. I put in some slow-release fertilizer when I got the bed ready, as well as a lot of compost. And I haven't had a problem with bugs or viruses, unlike the neighbor's.

OT. Over the last couple of months, work-load, stress and long hours have contributed to a resurgence in my self-confidence and motivation. I know realize I have a lot of specialized knowledge and in computer networks and a good broad and general knowledge of how local governments operate with 27 years experience. I find myself challenged in my present environment and I am enjoying work. I have grown from an average network dweeb to a "can-do guy" who gets the job done. Two people have inspired and guided me in this growth, Ken, my manager (Who is a great ass-chewer) and Natasha, young co-worker who has a master in network engineering, and is raising a family and working on her doctorate in computer science. Natasha is truly amazing, I have never seen a true multi-tasker until her. I have watched her highlighting relevant sections of a Comcast contract while fully participating in a meeting and operating her blackberry simultaneously. I work with some very intelligent, hard-working, talented and under-appreciated individuals.
I have been dissatisfied with my employer, a local metro-Atlanta area county government for years due to the lack of raises to the employees in the trenches, but passing whopping 100 percent raises for the Commissioners and 60 percent for the CEO, making him the the highest paid in metro-Atlanta. Employees have received low raises that do not even begin to keep up with inflation, exaggerated by the high gas prices lately. My department has lost our best people because better offers. I could SMELL the ammonia at arm's length, but I asked "What's the problem?"

*Our boy has this rash...*

And they took off THE diaper he'd worn since they brought him home from the hospital... I spent the next hour leading THEM through a bathing-the-baby learning session, and pounding home the fact that YES, urine is 'natural' and its component parts, ammonia and uric acid, are 'natural' and the uric acid will 'naturally' BURN YOUR NEWBORN SON'S SKIN -like THIS, MORONS!- unless you give him a 'natural' bath twice a day, okay? Promise?

I study a few years back out of one of the Nordic countries looked at babies of vegans being raised vegan (not even mothers milk). By age six the kids brains were underdeveloped. 258 loflyer  Tue, Aug 12, 2008 6:29:36pm

The final blow was the loss of the northern quarter of the county, populated by a lot of affluent white people. The affluent whites were tired of receiving no attention by my employer, and voted for succession from the county a month ago. They are creating the "City of Dunwoody" out of North DeKalb and will elect their government next month. What really infuriated me was that we received word from the commissioners four months ago to consider Dunwoody a done deal and start planning for county operations independent of Dunwoody. All the county had to do was go up to Dunwoody, hold about 4 or 5 town-hall meetings and ask Dunwoody citizens what the heck they wanted out of the county, and then the county to provide the services. My employer could not find it in themselves to provide even that basic function to a significant element of its population.
I am volunteering my knowledge of North DeKalb infrastructure and government to assist setting up the "City of Dunwoody". I hope to get a new job and employer out of the deal. Plus it will really be interesting to participate in forming a new government. Interesting times are ahead for me!

About 10 years ago, I was at a gathering where some doctors were talking about this subject. The high-carb/low-fat diet craze that started in the 80s created a lot of unintentional monsters who severely limited their young children's intake of fat. The Islamofacists and the Dhimmicrats see eye-to-eye on so very many things (i.e.: “death to Amerikkka”, blame Amerikkka first, G-d D-mn Amerikkka, etc.) that it would be similar to Hitler trying to assassinate Mussolini.

Could it be that Muslims are upset that Obama has abandoned his roots?

Putin's been busy this week

LMFAO

It really isn't funny but I can see the terrorist pulling a major job off during the DNC to show the Republicans where asleep at the controls.

He was dead in the hotel a few days before being found?
Housekeeping is doing a bang-up job there.

41,000 years ago several Aborigines dined on giant Kangaroo meat. It was tasty.

Prehistoric giant animals killed by man, not climate: study

Hey, if you go to Mastodon State Historic Site in Peveley Missouri, you'll find that early Missourians found mastodons and giant sloths tasty.

This has to be followed up. This story can't fucking go away, or I'm calling the Denver police myself to get the story.

re: #213 Shiplord Kirel

It's certainly convenient that the Dem convention is being staged so close to LGF World Headquarters.

Little do they realize the terrible truth about LFG. You see, “Charles” is really a cigar-smoking reptilian android from the planetoid Aidemydni, who lives in a top secret nitrogen-filled bomb shelter (why doesn’t the nitrogen explode when I smoke? ah ah! that would be telling!) concealed beneath Denver International Airport. Bwa hahaha! Soon the Earth will be mine, and my lizardoid armies will herd the peace activists into brutal repression camps, the better to slaughter them and feast on their gamy buttocks! Bwa hahaha!

Could it just be a lucky terrorist work accident?

"No Sub"

Probably, HaShem works in strange ways.

It’s believed Dirie died from something other than the substance that was in the container.

Maybe it was the Dark Knight or a vigilante.

re: #229 mossley

It's amazing that people so blindly buy into marketing. There is nothing to suggest that organic = healthier/better/safer or any of the other feel-good modifiers used to describe it.

Storytime:

I was shopping at Whole Foods with the roommate a few weeks ago (we go occasionally to pick up odd ingredients for special cooking, and they also make GREAT challa). Coming around one corner we passed a cart pushed by an older woman, containing a kid who was evidently her grandson, aged about 4-5. This looked like a cookies-and-sweets-for-grandson trip, because he was going through all the items in the cart and holding them up for his grandmother.

"Look, chocolate cake!" (holds up Organic Cake Made With Free-Range Eggs, Organic This, Organic That, No Chickens Were Harmed, etc. probably about $20 for a stinking cake)

"Look, ice cream!" (holds up Organic Whole Foods Brand Ice Cream Churned With Pride By Immigrant Children Using Milk Massaged From Pampered Cows, etc. about $9 for a half-gallon)

"Look, candy!" (Organic Non-Allergenic Special This With Amazing Politically Correct That, $4 for a chocolate bar)

And I think, "What's the f-cking point?" Lady, you could have gone to Kroger and gotten delicious sugar- and HFCS-filled garbage that wouldn't have made any worse a dent in your boy's growth and metabolism and saved $30... Such a smart, conscientious shopper you are... Oi Vey!

"You can't fix Stupid", as the saying goes.

Native Americans also wiped out the New World Horse and other mega-fauna in the Americas.

Expert hunters + slow-breeding tasty creatures = extinction.

Guess I should lay off the panda burger lunches and breakfasts of scrambled California vulture eggs then, huh?

I had a particular obnoxious organic/ natural / vegan pestering me one day at about how all natural was the only way to go. I finally glared at him and said:

"Cyanide is natural"

Of course nature is full of nasty toxins and even carcinogens.

I always tell these idiots that if they think something is healthy because it comes from a tree, they haven't considered strychnine.

I'm sure the container was full of "The Powder of Peace" so stop worrying everybody.
