Police force back protesters in Civic Center

By The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 08/25/2008 07:36:26 PM MDT

Riot police have forced several hundred protesters out of Civic Center and then blocked them before they could reach the 16th Street Mall.

Police had the protesters surrounded near Court Street and 15th Street and moved up reinforcements, including an Aurora armored vehicle. The have started to make arrests.

Protesters and police had lined up across from one another in front of City and County Building about 7 p.m., the police wearing their full riot gear and holding batons, chanting "move back, move back."

At last one protester was sprayed with pepper spray and the mass of marchers moved back across the park and were cut off by police behind the Sheraton Hotel.

A police spokesman said that they had massed their forces in the park based on intelligence about the protesters actions.

Several downtown hotels were reported to be on lockdown.

re: #94 Pawn of the Oppressor

It's not terribly unusual for people with meth to have guns on them... Fun semi-related fact, roughly 2/3rds of so-called "gun crime" in the U.S. is drug-related. I could expand on that from a PDF of stats I have somewhere but I'd rather not dig it out at the moment.

Don't I know that, years on the fire department. Meth houses are prone to fires, the ammo cooks off (not a big dea), it's when the loaded guns cook off that the real fun starts.

There was a time when we just threw these people in insane asylums.

You know, I grew up in a little town in Massachusetts. Back then there was a state law that said that you could not divorce a spouse who had been in the state asylum within the last so many years. There was a judge in town who wanted quite badly to divorce his wife. Every now and then she would stroll down to the main intersection in her fur coat, cross to the middle of the street, drop the fur coat and lay down on it naked as a jay bird. They would haul her off to the asylum and that would be the last you would hear of the judge's divorce for a few more years. :)

Onlookers greeted the clash with a mixture of pity and scorn. They lamented that the groups lacked a message and also that their commitment to their cause was dwarfed by their much greater desire to antagonize law enforcement.

Obama:

Let’s put our differeces aside. We are all bothers and sisters.

We may come from different back grounds and but we all want hope and change.

George gathering support for my Presidency while living on one dollar a month!

We went our separate ways as children but meet once in 2006 at George’s spartan shack – where George lifted my wallet. We have not talked since, but I hope to get my wallet back one of these days.

That alone should bring you hope!

And may be some spare change!

So, let’s put away the pepper spay and the Clinton posters and have a celabration!

I have won the Presidency!

Riot police have forced a couple of hundred protesters out of Civic Center and then blocked them before they could reach the 16th Street Mall.

Police had the protesters surrounded between Court Street and Cleveland along 15th Street and moved up reinforcements, including an Aurora armored vehicle. They have made at least one arrest.

A police spokesman said that they

had massed their forces in the park based on intelligence about the protesters actions.
Several downtown hotels were reported to be on lockdown.

Curiousity seekers stood outside the police cordon, outnumbering the marchers.

Asked whether they would allow the protesters to disperse, Detective John White, Denver Police spokesman, said that police were "trying to identify" the protesters.

And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
Just to sing

In a land that's known as freedom
How can such a thing be fair
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
For the help we can bring

We can change the world -
Rearrange the world
It's dying - to get better

Politicians sit yourself down,
There's nothing for you here
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
For a ride

Don't ask Jack to help you
Cause he'll turn the other ear
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
Or else join the other side

We can change the world -
Rearrange the world

It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life
It's dying - rules and regulations, who needs them
Open up the door

Somehow people must be free
I hope the day comes soon
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
Show your face

From the bottom to the ocean
To the mountains of the moon
Won't you please come to Chicago Denver
No one else can take your place

We can change the world -
Rearrange the world

It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life
It's dying - rules and regulations, who needs them

Open up the door
We can change the world

OBAMA ANTHEM LYRICS

All hail the messiah
Obama, Obama
The path to the new socialist motherland
Our savior, our savior
Obama, Obama
The leader more famous than Lindsay Lohan
Bow down and praise the one
Give him your money and your guns

364 lostlakehiker  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 7:16:01pm

Let's hope the police have better organization and discipline than was the case at the University of Minnesota in 1974.

There was a large demonstration, entirely peaceful, and with one exception, legal.

There was a small cadre of people who blocked an intersection they had no business to block. It was the only road into or out of a hospital. Peacefully blocked though it was, the law was going to clear them off it, and quite rightly.

And there was the law. The law decided to clear the whole area, with truncheons and teargas. Demonstrators, cadre, and all. Officers took off their badges so that even if what they did was filmed, they couldn't be identified afterwards. For good measure, they beat photographers and destroyed their equipment. Better safe than sorry. Students were teargassed and clubbed just walking out of class onto the green. Bones were broken. Some of the demonstrators fought back, or fought, and police were injured too, one losing an eye. It was a real dog's breakfast.

I was looking trying to figger if Zombie was there - looks like he is. Good Luck bud.

The anarchists are pretty organized - i saw guys with red crosses, media crews, lawyer guild type peeps (bright green caps), and cop watchers.

Sheesh.

I would love to be a cop in Denver right now,

I wouldn't.

Most of these bozoids are trust fund babies, and as such can be expected to have high priced lawyers on the speed dial. This will certainly result in proceedings against the DPD and individual officers in civil court.

This may also result in Federal criminal charges of "civil rights violations" against individual officers. Remember, The officers who were properly acquitted of felony assault on Rodney King were prosecuted by the Justice Department under Bush 41.

No, but they can arrest you, take you in, hold you for hours doing paperwork, lose the paperwork, and if you don't have an attorney to scream for you, you're lost for days. Knowing this, they can illegally hold a mob at bay for public safety, judge will slap their wrists six months from now.

Zombie was in the same crowd as a bunch of anarchists, and the police aren't simply going to let him go on zombie's own say so - they don't know who it is, and whether it's a trick to start mayhem elsewhere. Besides, the police may have been warned that the anarchists might try that very trick to avoid arrest and/or cause mayhem by gumming things up.

Even if all police officers did read LGF, which is far from certain, how the hell do you think Zombie could prove his/her identity as Zombie? Remember, that's a pseudonym that our undead friend uses to hide his/her true identity. He/she isn't going to be carrying any I.D. in that name.

Now a press pass from Pajamas Media might have some value, I guess, but Zombie closely guards his/her privacy, and would likely be very reluctant to take any steps which might blow his/her cover.

Sounds like the bullet has been successfully dodged, in any case.

The Denver Post live cam zoomed in on the building and someone had scrawled something relating to sexual relations with a certain farm animal frequently used as a term for a police officer...

I tried to explain to my wife (fairly apolitical) about the protests and she just shook her head. Is the DNC paying for all the extra police presence?

re: #568 prince of leaves

Couldn't he be arrested for that? Last I heard, inciting a crowd to kill someone is NOT protected by the 1st amendment. Especially since he used her name.

re: #561 Syrah

Zombie's very experienced and very paranoid - I doubt very much there's anything to identify him/her/it and more than I have anything to identify myself as protestshooter. Unfortunatley the best way to get free access to the moonbats is to grab a spare sign and smile at everybody and let the police assume you're one of them. Unfortunately that means if they call to disperse and you don't you're screwed.

I was at a "die-in" where I was able to shoot it perfectly well from the street corner (legal) where people with cameras who assumed they were immune and stayed in the street got arrested. It's just one of those decisions you have to make - how badly do you want that shot?

576 Catttt  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 8:49:29pm

Wow - Thank heavens our Zombie escaped!

Pepper spray sucks.

re: #561 Syrah

Zombie, It is important that you have nothing on your person that would indicate that you are THE Zombie.

It appears that there is a very real possibility that you could end up in the cages with those crazies. You need to stay safely anonymous.

Zombie could probably just tell the officers that he's THAT Zombie and they'd let him pass, but it looks as if he didn't have to compromise his identity! Whew! You know every single one of us here would be going through the arrest records! Admit it folks, you're secretly jealous that Charles probably knows Zombie's true identity and has shard some adult beverages with him.

I've actually thought of going to SF for one of the crazy gatherings just to meet the Zombie and buy him a beer or two!

Zombie is free! Free! Free!

Three cheers for Zombie! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

Don't taze zombie, bro!

585 zombie  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 9:13:09pm

I'm back. Safe at last! Unbelievable ordeal.

No time for chit-chat. Got zillions of photos to process.

Washed pepper spray out of eye. it's OK now, also got some in throat. Later, got a whiff of tear gas but luckily I covered my mouth and it quickly dissipated.

586 zombie  Mon, Aug 25, 2008 9:13:56pm

And sorry, this will be my only comment tonight! Got 300 hours of work to do in the next 3 hours.

How would the cops verify that as truth?

P.S. I am the King of Siam.

I have an ex NYPD friend (6' 5" and 240 lbs.) that used to do the "riot control" thing and at the Columbia U. takeover back in the 60's he said his post had him standing next to Mark Rudd (sp ?) 60's a**hole agitator/trouble maker extraordinaire. During downtime "they shot the sh*t" here and there and at one point they had even agreed to take turns bringing the coffee & donuts when one or the other got a break to go wash up etc.My friend said they were getting along pretty good (outwardly) but just as things were getting really warm and fuzzy he took the opportunity to remind Rudd (with a smile on his face) "just don't forget, if and when all hell breaks loose, I'm still going to crack your fuckin' skull". I wished so badly that someone had snapped a pic. of Rudds face at that very moment ! It would have been priceless !

Can you work a swift kick to Alex Jones' nuts in that 3 hours?

I hereby excommunicate that sack of shit from Texas.
