Zombie: The Democratic Convention Giant Puppet Parade

Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 7:57:38 am PDT

(Cross-posted at Pajamas Media.)

IMG_5372.JPG

On Tuesday, a group called The Backbone Campaign sponsored a parade they call "Procession to the Future," but which is better known in journalistic circles as Giant Puppets!

IMG_5328.JPG

Here's a secret about parades: the best scenes are usually in the staging area, not the parade itself.

IMG_5335.JPG

One of several symbolic figures: individual real women throughout history are used to personify various positive attributes. And who, in the long history of humankind, was chosen to exemplify Truth? Why, it's left-wing talk show host Amy Goodman!

IMG_5347.JPG

IMG_5348.JPG

They were having quite a struggle inflating the Statue of Liberty.

IMG_5351.JPG

IMG_5352.JPG

She was never quite able to achieve full erection.

IMG_5325.JPG

You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!

IMG_5329.JPG

This sad, overheated polar bear is here to remind us about global warming.

IMG_5336.JPG

Amy Goodman was not the only symbolic figure. Justice, for example, is represented by Rosa Parks dressed up in what looks like a Harriet Tubman costume.

IMG_5334.JPG

Ralph Nader's 2000 running mate Winona LaDuke is Respect.

IMG_5339.JPG

Sadako Sasaki, the Hiroshima victim who folded a thousand origami cranes, is Peace -- while that irrepressible Amy Goodman pulls a prank on a Code Pink member.

IMG_5320.JPG

Because commercial radio stations say things we don't like!

IMG_5321.JPG

In a nod to Americana, they had a gigantic Declaration of Independence.

IMG_0001.JPG

Members of the public had been invited to sign it with messages of their own.

IMG_5509.JPG

Finally the parade began for real. The Backbone Campaign's logo is a human spine on an American flag, meant to "embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values."

IMG_5576.JPG

Ah, the chain gang of war criminals: Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney, George Bush, and Donald Rumsfeld. Progressive values!

IMG_5530.JPG

Señor Coffee Cup is a real enigma. Is he supposed to be a migrant farm worker? And is the one defining attribute of farm workers that they carry around giant coffee cups?

IMG_0024.JPG

Bees! The people carrying them were chanting, "Keep the bees alive! Keep the bees alive!"

IMG_0023.JPG

Here's -- um...Donna Shalala (???) -- promoting nationalized healthcare.

IMG_5555.JPG

Sometimes it seemed the sign-carriers went out of their way to wear the most inappropriate clothing. Here, for example, is a man with Soviet Union shirt who was part of a group carrying signs that demanded "Universal Human Rights" and "Dismantle Empire." Excuse me, sir: Are you trying to look like a fool?

IMG_5572.JPG

And then there was the woman who showed her support for "Separation of Church and State" by wearing a kaffiyeh.

IMG_5568.JPG

Take a moment to soak in the whole scene.

IMG_5552.JPG

My favorite puppet without any doubt was the polar bear, because the people inside actually somehow managed to make it walk like a bear.

IMG_5527.JPG

Amy!

IMG_5573.JPG

Winona!

IMG_5556.JPG

Rosa/Harriet!

IMG_5563.JPG

Sadako!

IMG_5535.JPG

Watch out -- here comes the national bullet train. Coast to coast at high speeds! The most environmental idea ever.

IMG_0031.JPG

One way to pass the time at the parade was to play "Identify That Giant Head." This one had me stumped. Edwin Meese?

IMG_5554.JPG

Awwww: Finally -- something cute!

IMG_5533.JPG

Mother Vegetable was a crowd favorite.

IMG_5558.JPG

For once, the song is actually true: He really does have the whole world in his hands.

IMG_5521.JPG

And a droopy Lady Liberty towered over them all. Sort of.

I have to tell you, if Zombie had not told me that the "George Bush" in the wheelchair represented George Bush, I would have sworn that he was intended to represent Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It sure looks much more like FDR. Wasn't he a democrat?

Do other cities have giant puppet parades? Never saw one in Dallas. In fact, never knew they existed until a video link at LGF showed some at a church event in S.F.

The big health care puppet looks threatening - my way or else!
I bet that stethoscope is really cold.

And another piece of cognitive dissonance in the picture of the guy with the CCCP t-shirt; there is a sign that says "Dismantle Empire" just as Putin is trying to resurrect the Soviet one.

41 Ward Cleaver  Thu, Aug 28, 2008 8:10:15am

Anybody got a match? Hilarity ensues.

Note the lardbutt male in the "Abortion on Demand" t-shirt. On his demand? That would be convenient for him, I'm sure. If he could get, you know, laid.

49 yma o hyd  Thu, Aug 28, 2008 8:11:18am

Zombie is right - that polar bear is sooo cute!
Mind, when it was still on the floor, it reminded me of a cross between a dachshund and a Pyrenean Mountain dog (they're white). Definitely cuddlesome.

(Ahem - you do know that they're not exactly on the verge of extinciton, don't you?)

Someone smarter than I has observed that it may well not be a good thing to place your health care in the government's hands. And then to give the government financial incentives to prefer to see you dead rather than ill.

Because, you know, if you wish to get more of something you create incentives for that thing.

62 lawhawk  Thu, Aug 28, 2008 8:14:04am

So many muddled and mixed messages here. It's like someone threw all the slogans of years gone by into a bag and people picked 'em out at random to wear and display.

I wonder if the folks who were carrying the sign about a nuclear free future were thinking about the consequences of such an action. Without nuclear reactions, the sun would go dark and life as we know it would end.

On these puppets:

Should Hugo Chavez get a green card, enter the U.S. form a "Red Army Party for Greens", 70% of the Democrats at this convention would join and vote for Hugo Chavez for Pres. of the U.S., its that bad.

Which is why we should never change the Constitution to allow naturalized citizens to run. I'm glad that The Jerkinator is unable to run.

Someone smarter than I has observed that it may well not be a good thing to place your health care in the government's hands. And then to give the government financial incentives to prefer to see you dead rather than ill.

Because, you know, if you wish to get more of something you create incentives for that thing.

Anybody who wants to oppose this government health service, just have a look at the state of the British National Health Service, a socialist health service since 1948 ...
Paid for by our taxes, so its not 'free'.
Waiting lists, horrendous hospital-acquired infections, the worst survival rates for any cancer in the western world (yes, there are lots of new drugs, but they are soo expensive, and if you do want to pay for them privately, you have to pay for the whole medical service as well, from syringes used to nurses' time, everything ...), people going blind because the drugs are too expensive - but cushy jobs for the administrators and all those who decide what the peasants are allwoed to have ...

re: #827 buzzsawmonkey

Napoleon started as a Jacobin but he did more than subvert the Revoloution. He was in his initial success intensly practical. He institutionalized the Revoloution. At first the public were mobilized to support Robesspierre by tableaux and festivals. When Napoleon took power he immersed all of France in an epic pageant which they have been unable to escape from. It is so seductive that outsiders or even opponents of his rule are trapped in his dream.

187 lawhawk  Thu, Aug 28, 2008 8:36:08am

The prime reason that you wont get a national rail system or an improved national power grid?

NIMBY.

People always say that they're for these things, but the moment you decide to site power lines in their neck of the woods, or consider building a rail link that runs through their neighborhood, they suddenly get the shakes. They find all kinds of reasons to not build these things - like how wind turbines will be nothing more than the Bassomatic 5000 for birds or that power lines cause cancer or that it would destroy the views.

It's obstructionism that prevents these projects from being built, and it's a built in bug of the way that our government does business - actually it's a feature since we do not operate like the Chinese that Obama has adored from afar with the way that they simply impose their will on the people who have no choice in the matter.

Don't get me wrong, I love trains, and wish we had a better system. But a national bullet train system is economic moonshine.

Much smaller country with more heads per square mile. Perfect situation for rail systems. Nationwide rail travel inside the US is impractical. It would work best to have a rail system for geographic regions suited to them, such as New England, Southern California, areas along the gulf coast.,

Most of those stations are franchisees. They merely changed their franchise to something different. The gasoline may come from the same refinery.

That's something people don't always realise. Gasoline is gasoline. It pretty much comes from the one or two refineries or terminals in the area, and the brand is slapped on at the station.

I just want to stand and jeer as they rant.
That scary visage, the stare of a mache.
Those confused performers, make it all go away;
The sight of the pink, that BO will stink,
I chill at the ill of the anti-USA.

A line of students with little to no guts,
For I loathe this parade.

Hotel des Invalides is Napoleon's Tomb and monument. It's a bit shabby, but still the bastion of the French military. We can thank Napoleon for his suppression of the Muslim armies in 1799, which ended centuries of Muslim efforts to conquer Europe for two hundred years.

On the other hand, unlike George Washington, who had the military power to proclaim himself king of our new nation, Napoleon became a tyrant. Too bad for the French, who had to put up with thousands of casualties and military deaths, and eventually with the Russian occupation of Paris, as a consequence.

I know this is the dead thread & I'm just about to leave for lunch, but Napoleon did not stem the tide of muslim expansion into Europe - their defeat at the Seige of Vienna in 1983 did that. Napoleon nearly converted to islam in order to make his conquest of Egypt & The Holy Land more palatable to his new muslim subjects.

The only Bullet Train that could make money would be one from LA to Las Vegas, straight through the desert...The slot machines on board can be rigged to turn on as soon as the train crosses the Nevada state line. Of course the train would have to slow down for that last stretch from the border to Vegas in order to milk the quarter-slots for all they're worth.

re: #187 lawhawk

BANANA. Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone (or Anything).
A common disease, especially prevalent amongst Moonbattus Americanus. Take two aspirin and call in sick.

252 Just Another Four-letter Word  Thu, Aug 28, 2008 10:35:21am

re: #215 buzzsawmonkey

Rail service looks a hell of a lot less impractical with all the delays and rerouting at the airports.

What kills me is that it takes about 8 hours longer to get from NY to Chicago by train today than it did in 1945--and that's if the train is on time.

A TGV train from New York to the Midwest could perhaps be competitive with the airlines; personally I would rather take a 4, 5 or even 8-hour train ride than deal with the 3-4 hour ordeal that the hour and half flight between New York and Chicago has become. But Amtrak isn't going to do it; its supposed TGV between NY and DC takes only half an hour less than the ordinary train.

One of the problems is that current "bullet trains" in the U.S. have to travel over current trackage, with all the switching delays, bad track, speed limits, and prioritization of freight traffic. Commuter rail just isn't a priority any more...

The solution is to build exclusive track for the high-speed traffic, and we all know that NIMBY (or BANANA) makes that cost-prohibitive unless the Feds go all-out and use Eminent Domain to GET it built. The Shinka-sen has its own track and nothing else uses it, and I do believe the TGV does also (I'm too lazy to look it up). Not gonna happen unless the single-use track is built. Period.

The most engaging report yet, Zombie. What you said about "Dismantle Empire" with the CCCP shirt only magnifies the irony of the whole batch of puppets (and I DO mean "puppets").

On a purely aesthetic level, the polar bear was cute, although he shows exactly how cute can be naive. The episode with Lady Liberty was truth in poetry.

Vegetable Goddess looked like something from a primordial matriarchy, a Dido from the kind Great-Mother-dominated Philistia where child sacrifice was practiced.

That guy wearing that abortion t-shirt, if only his parents had that option...

Abortion should only be allowed when:

John the pedo was not quite impotent. To balance out the legal side we'll add murder to his charges.
Otherwise the mother dies.
Personally, bringing a child into life only so that it can life a short life full of agony due to genetic disease or 30+ years as a vegetable is a greater sin against life than aborting the poor thing.
Joke: Being a stupid shit. Examples: Zombietime reports, pick any. Although sometimes I'm not so sure about the joke part.

Otoh, child care needs to be addressed in a big way. Else you end up with horde of dysfunctional adults.
Some "parents" are disgraces to the human race and might have their child and it's victims done a favor by aborting it. So you gotta tear away babies from "risk" parents and nobody needs to be told what a potential for disaster that venue holds since the tearing would be done by a state agency.
Or problems down the road with raising these children - bad foster parents, yes they are a vanishingly small part, a few incidents and blammo a new state agency to control parents -> Great success.

Abortion is a wonderful issue:
People against it have the background who could handle "no abortion, no why".
People for it are... actually they have the same background.
The problem is the narod. The ones who do not care enough to have an opinion. They also usually do not care to do more with children than collect checks on them.

I'm really on the fence on this issue, and aware that this is somehwat incoherent, for one I'm male - I have a) no say and b) no say. Second I'm aware that I lack a considerable amount of empathy when it comes to matters of public policy. Third, why yes I'm as a green as a preacher watching 2 girls 1 cup. I'm aware that I'm quite possibly overlooking some aspects to the matter at hand due to inexperience.
Incoherency stems trying to reconcile these three aspects into an whole while nearing bed time.

So have at it, be aware that If i had more faith in humanity as a whole and medicine in particular I'd quite happily restrict abortion to "Ask a judge. Have a very good case. ie: My Daddy is the Daddy" and then still have 99,999% of cases tossed.

The pictures aren't showing up in my browser here, though they always have previously.
Have IE7 and installed Service Pack 3 for XP yesterday, and it worked fine yesterday.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I think the unknown bighead in the tie-dyed shirt is supposed to be Karl Rove. As for Senor Coffee Cup... Juan Valdez?

Juan Valdez as the "Incarnation of Sustainable Agriculture."

I cannot see the pictures either, it says they are forbidden. The only pictures that show up are of the statue of liberty.
