The obvious reasons...
Obama's got money and the press in his pocket.
McCain is fighting a weak economy and he supports a war that is subject to criticism.
It's not a good formula for success on Nov. 4. Johnny Mac (aka Mac the knife) has performed better than expected so far, but the race is still too close for my liking.

NJ has become a toss up state, all the trends are McCain.
Obama / Biden is in a gaffe spin and they just keep pulling it in tighter.
I'll feel better (or worse) after the debates. I know MCCain/Palin will perform to my liking, but I fear that they may say something that is poorly interpretted by moderate voters.

re: #73 DeafDog
0bama's got spending issues, and now his lead in states he should have easily won are slipping away. That means he's going to have to spend his hard earned cash in more states just to stay competitive. Also- he's still having to raise money- he has a fundraiser tonight. That's less time schmoozing voters. Also- the DNC is hurting for money and at some point, the big donors are going to turn the spigot off.
McCain, on the other hand, is gaining in states he shouldn't be gaining in. WA is close, NJ is close, NY is close, PA is tied, MN is tied. Meanwhile- the RNC is in the dough, and McCain gets his publicly matched funds while having all the time he wants to schmooze voters.... and we haven't even mentioned the power of Palin yet.
Look at the trend lines (charts) in these toss up states- trending down for 0bama, up for McCain. I mean- if NY is within 5 and MN (which hasn't gone red since Nixon) is tied- 0bama ain't doing so good.

One of the sickest, darkest issues in American politics-courtesy of BHO.
I think that it makes him a very low human being.
His defenders throw out all kinds of bull, like Federal legislation ot he was just defending Roe v Wade.
At the end of the day the language was very specific & makes the arguments bogus.
The incident that triggered it was refusing aid to a Down Baby resulting from a botched abortion at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL.
It is part of the Advocate System & the Chicago Tribune reported that the Obamas had a financial interest in the corporation

The standard/classic Browning design uses a seven round magazine. There are extensions and "fat" frames that use bigger magazines. Para-Ordnance from Canada, for one, makes up to a 14 round capable pistol based on the 1911 (last I looked).

And to mine - Johnny Mac needs to regain his momentum, fast!
The time for jubilation and gloating starts on Nov 5th - until then its slog it out and ffs, take the gloves off, McCain - no more Mr Nice Guy!

Anything more than 7+1 and you start to pay a price for the weight of the piece. It may no longer fall within the parameters of concealable, and will take longer to draw and aim. I like agile.
That's true, but not the reason for the 10 rd limit. It's supposed to limit a shooters ability to conduct a mass shooting. But anyone who practices swapping mags it barely interrupts firing. We used to do drills; 2 mags, 2 rds each, draw, fire 2, swap, fire 2 in (IIRC) 4 secs.
It's like the "assault" weapons bans, what hey picked as "defining characteristics" are all cosmetic not functional.
Besides, when a criminal illegally obtains a gun how much attention is he gonna' pay to mag limits?
Legal restrictions on mag capacity is pure sophistry.

No, I'm talking about a real accordion, a stomach Steinway, a squeezebox, the real deal. I started playing in the late 50's. My best friend in Brooklyn, Jimmy, played accordion. It was the only thing we didn't have in common. So in 1959, I begged my parents for an accordion for Xmas. It was Welk heaven from there on in. Although, in his his book he said he fired up something else. Plus his pal, Ayers, fired up some dynamite. But, no weapon.

Also, it'd be interesting to to see a list of states that BHO was contesting, but where he has now pulled out his people and advertising dollars. I think Georgia is one, but I'm sure there are others. So much for a 50 state strategy. Maybe McCain can contest 50 states, just to give the Obama people fits.

Sarah Palin, explained
The Democrats can't figure out why Sarah Palin was a brilliant choice for McCain. Remember the "expert pundits" who were saying this pick "seriously calls into question McCain's judgment" and that Palin would be forced to withdraw? We don;t hear much of that anymore as the GOP is now racking in millions in donations and the Alaska governor is packing the stadiums on the stumps. But the Dems still haven't figured out what's happening. So I'm going to do them all a big favor and explain her to them.
Sarah Palin is the Human Wedge Issue.
To win a presidential elections these days you have to do two things: get out your base and win the battle for the undecided. Wedge Issues help you do that by creating fault lines in demographics and pealing those voters away from your opponent. Wedge issues aren't necessarily important, but some people feel very strongly about them anyway. In 2004, gay marriage was the wedge issue that delivered Ohio to Bush. Sure it got the Democrats an even larger share of the vote in San Fransisco, but Bush was never going to win California anyway. It was the undecided working class men Rove was after, and it worked.
Now the GOP has a candidate for VP that actually personifies several wedge issues, a campaign manager's dream come true. Every time a feminist spokeswoman accuses Sarah Palin of not being a "real woman", another busload of pissed off Hilary supporters moves to the McCain column. Every time a liberal pundit calls Palin a moose huntin' redneck, another busload of white blue-collar union members is driven over to McCain. And every time the Democrats sneer at Palin's conservative Christian values, then another ten busloads of social conservatives, who have been very cautious of McCain up till now, decide it's time to get out and vote for the war hero. Obama's pig in lipstick joke? That won him plenty of guffaws from the his hard left base, but it cost him tens of thousand votes among American women who have had it up to here with two faced sexist colleagues who pretend to accept them as equals only as long as women remember their place and do as they are told. Heck of a job, Barry!
So to Obama, Biden, Olbermann, Pelosi and the thousands of other liberal "experts", all I can say is, "Keep it up!" You just might win this election... for McCain, that is.

My neices are sweet, but young and influential. At their (mostly black) public school they can't help but be affected (infected?) by Obamamania. Recently, when I told the middle one that I was voting for McCain, she asked, "Don't you have any hope for the future?" I said, "Yes, I hope to hell that McCain wins in November!" I don't think it was the answer she was looking for.
Ask her flat out what HER HOPES are for the future. That should make her stop and think about what she really hopes for rather than just 'hope' Hope is not tangible and is not an end.

Ok, pilgram. And I have an accordion, a Yamaha piano, an American Indian flute, 40 harmonicas, an Ephipone electric guitar and practice amp, a roll-up paino (ever see one of those, really neat) and various instrument mikes. There's only so much room in this town for accordions.

Underestimating BHO would be a mistake. He did defeat Hillary C. Who saw that coming?
But what did he win? Clinton won overwhelmingly in big-population states, particularly solid-blue states. Obama had a lot of (undemocratic) caucas wins and a lot of small red state wins that he can't possibly carry in November. And it still all could have gone differently if enough (unelected) superdelegates had swung the other way.
As far as elections go, Obama has never even had to campaign in a mildly red county before. He doesn't get elected to office, he gets rubber-stamped. The Presidency doesn't work that way, and BHO can't stop crying about it.

From "Thrown Away," by the great Rudyard Kipling:
To rear a boy under what parents call the "sheltered life system"
is, if the boy must go into the world and fend for himself, not
wise. Unless he be one in a thousand he has certainly to pass
through many unnecessary troubles; and may, possibly, come to
extreme grief simply from ignorance of the proper proportions of
things.Let a puppy eat the soap in the bath-room or chew a newly-blacked
boot. He chews and chuckles until, by and by, he finds out that
blacking and Old Brown Windsor make him very sick; so he argues
that soap and boots are not wholesome. Any old dog about the house
will soon show him the unwisdom of biting big dogs' ears. Being
young, he remembers and goes abroad, at six months, a well-mannered
little beast with a chastened appetite. If he had been kept away
from boots, and soap, and big dogs till he came to the trinity
full-grown and with developed teeth, just consider how fearfully
sick and thrashed he would be! Apply that motion to the "sheltered
life," and see how it works. It does not sound pretty, but it is
the better of two evils.
He was so right!
Some people in the UK now suggest that it might be a good idea for parents to look at how puppies are trained and take on board any applicable rule to train their children.

Some

If a child acted like a puppy, you'd send him back. Would you tolerate your child pooping on the couch & then eating all the toilet paper?

re: #438 debutaunt
Pete Barbutti (born May 4, 1934) (homophone of "bar beauty") is an American comedian and musician (playing piano, "cordeen", and trumpet). He made at least twelve appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, from 1971 through 1982.
Among his better-known routines are "Cordeen School," about an accordion teacher who sells a lot of accordions, but whose students never seem to learn much.
And let me tell you. That routine was based in truth. It was about a real life person named Al Trick, who had the American Accordion School out of Chicago. He was originally from Italy.
Al discovered that he could make more money selling the less expensive Italian made student sized accordions through the MAIL. You could find his ads in many of the comic books in the 50's and 60's.
It was a total mail order accordion lesson course. You purchased the accordion for about 150 dollars, and paid monthly installments for the lessons.
And actually, even a cheap Italian accordion was actually a really nice instrument. All hand made, good materials etc.
Al Trick retired to Dallas, Texas. I meant him in the 70's when I lived there. He still had a music store that sold ONLY accordions, gave live lessons, and he had an 3 accordion orchestras.
And he was the only place with in 300 miles that repaired accordions.
An American sucess story.

Exactly if the Dems used a democratic method to run their primaries Clinton would be running today. Not the chosen one.

After slashing Gov Palin on the firing of an official and then hearing from a Republican spokesperson who stated the following:
that the two lead people on the investigation are Senators;
they are on public record as BHO supporters;
they have already signaled that their report will be another 'Oct surprise', Sanchez has the nerve to ask:
Well, if she has nothing to hide why won't she cooperate, you know, answer the questions in the issue?

Isn't Alan Greenspan responsible for the housing crisis and the latest financial crisis?
And didn't Obama just say as much today?
In the wake of the subprime mortgage and credit crisis in 2007, Greenspan admitted that there was a bubble in the US housing market, warning in 2007 of "large double digit declines" in home values "larger than most people expect."[25] However, Greenspan also noted, “I really didn't get it until very late in 2005 and 2006.”[26]

BHO won the the Democratic Party delegate count. That was the only election that mattered in the Primaries. Underestimating that accomplishment would be a mistake. Republicans underestimated Clinton in 1992 and the Dems underestimated Bush in 2000 & 2004.
Now, the election is about winning the Electoral College. That election will come down to a dozen 'swing' states. Axelrod is an effective campaign manager. He and the folks at ACORN will have more dead people voting than ever. Just because BHO talks nonsesense doesn't mean he can't win.

Yes you should.
I have said for a long time that there comes a time in a young mans life when he is too old and too big to be disciplined by his mother.
At that point he needs a little "chest bump" from his Dad.
Straightens them right out.
Very true. I figured out very early on if I didn't gain my son's respect and obedience when he was smaller than me, I would have no control over him when he got bigger than me. (And I'm only 5 feet tall, so that happened when he was about 11.) Fortunately, his dad was always there, and we never had an issue with him (aside from the occasional smart mouth). Now he's taller than his dad and a fine young man.

In 1962, it was a 2000 dollar instrument. Even the accordion itself is work half that now a days, minus the tubes and stuff.
I sold the Cordovox when I moved into this small apartment. Still kept my other accordion, strait 120 bass Italian, built in the 50's, with pickups. Sounds sweet.

In 14 years, I have never gone into a Dunkin Donuts. I knew the second I did, one of my jackass friends would drive by and point and laugh. Not worth the embarrassment. :)
I used a variation of that theory for several years. I drove a teeny 4-cyclinder subcompact, as fast as it would go, and passed tons of police officers without ever getting pulled over.
My theories was that none of the policemen wanted their co-workers to drive by and see they'd pulled over a subcompact for speeding. "Did you catch that one on foot, Bob?"

So "balajo" might mean "the toilet is over there"?
Actually, it's the name of a famous accordion dance hall in Rue de Lappe, Paris, named after its famous musette accordionist, Jo Privat -- who was a monster accordion player, by the way, friendly to gypsy musicians, and composer of excellent tunes. So I have a soft spot for at least one Frenchman, however much that exposes me to pillory and ridicule.
Don't get me started on banjo players.

I don't think Republicans ever underestimated Clinton. But Clinton didn't win anything close to a majority in either election. He was handed the Presidency by Perot twice (although he probably could have beat Dole anyway). Ross Perot is the only reason we had 8 years of Clinton.
GHWB got serious in the 1992 election too late - he felt that he desrved a second term. I think GHWB did underestimate Clinton/Carvelle
1996 was a different story. Dole was just a bad candidate.

Yes you should.
I have said for a long time that there comes a time in a young mans life when he is too old and too big to be disciplined by his mother.
At that point he needs a little "chest bump" from his Dad.
Straightens them right out.
Too right!
Seeing that elephants however live in a mariarchal 'society' - I'd rather use the wolf pack as example.
Here, when the wolf cubs are allowed out of the den theyv'e shared since birth with their Mom, at about five weeks or so, their dad starts playing with them. He plays rougher and rougher - and the wise cub will retreat quickly back into the den.
The unwise cub who thinks it can deal with dad - gets bitten to death.
Ranking is most important in wolf society!
You still get this with proper dogs: when a teenage dog, foll of testosterone, comes bouncing up to an older dog - he gets shown in no uncertain terms that he better show respect or else!
Proper dogs retreat - and show respect according to dog society. size doesn't come into it, my old dog saw off an Irish wolfhound teenager three times his size. He only had to bare his teeth an give a bloodcurdling growl ...
Didya know that teenage dogs ahve a higher level of testosterone when they get to sexual maturity, and that this level falls off once they've fully grown? That is why teenage dogs think they can take on any other dog - only to be taught otherwise!

Dole was a long time insider, a perma-politician, owned lock stock and barrel by Archer Daniels Midland and other such large subsidy suckers. (He was half-jokingly referred to as the Senator from Archer Daniels Midland.)
Made it kind of difficult to argue that Dole would have been that much better.

Banjo in Japanese means "toilet".
I would really like a banjo again, a four string, tenor. I had one in the 70's, could get by with most chording, dixieland trype of stuff, strumming stuff.
But I rarely see tenors for sale used, and I don't have the money for a new one.
As silly as this sounds, I used to play with 2 different Philidelphia Strings Bands, Trilby and Duffy, from 1966 until 1974. I marched down Broad Street with an accordion 8 tmies on New Years Day.
All the costumes had a hip pocket in them. The exact size of a flask.

If a child acted like a puppy, you'd send him back. Would you tolerate your child pooping on the couch & then eating all the toilet paper?
You'd do what a brilliant dog trainer told us puppy-owners:
Take a newspaper, roll it up, and hit! Hit yourself over the head and say 'I'm a bad puppy trainer, I'm a bad puppy trainer ...'
Its not the fault of the puppy - or the kid, its the fault of the owner, or the parents. They're the responsible ones - they must learn how to deal with stuff like that. Unfortunately, tehre are too many, both parents and dog owners, who think they don't need to do anything, it'll be all right eventually.
Well, it won't.

This talk of stuff on the desk reminds me that Robert Bloch, science fiction writer (wrote the episode of Star Trek that had Jack the Ripper in it) said he had the heart of a little boy...
In a jar on his desk.
That reminds me of the court testimony where the prosecutor asks the coroner if he was sure the victim was dead. He responds that since the victim's brain was in a tray on his desk that he was fairly certain.

re: #501 Walter L. Newton
Hey Walter, where was Al's store in Dallas?

The most embarassing part of the Dole campaign was his final campaign promise, to cut every tax rate by 15% across the board. It was the first time in my life that I was absolutely sure that a Republican candidate was lying his ass off to get elected. The promise came so late in the campaign, from a man who had never run on a platform of cutting taxes in his life. I just had to say, "Yeah, right."

Check out this series of videos: THE HISTORY OF EDWARDS BERNAYS.
It's all about how Bernays (Sigmund Freud's nephew) was a primary force behind the shaping of public opinion, over many years. He's the granddaddy of influencing the public to buy or to vote along certain lines, reported to have been a greater overall historical influence than Freud himself.
These are great black/white historical movies, well done. I wonder where they got 'em?

Israeli city uses DNA to fight dog poop
PETAH TIKVA, Israel (Reuters) - An Israeli city is using DNA analysis of dog droppings to reward and punish pet owners.Under a six-month trial program launched this week, the city of Petah Tikva, a suburb of Tel Aviv, is asking dog owners to take their animal to a municipal veterinarian, who then swabs its mouth and collects DNA.
The city will use the DNA database it is building to match feces to a registered dog and identify its owner

You can thank legislatures that want to modify citizens lives and habits through taxation. Of course, if their plans actually worked as they planned, they would encounter a large deficit down the line when all the smokers quit due to taxation and a lot of programs that relied on that tax money would no longer have it. So basically, all we have is "free" tax money that most citizens have no problem with because "is is someone else paying". Until it is their turn in the barrel.

Thanks WMom...It's so good to be home, but the trip back was very tense. There was no news to be had from my neck of the woods because everyone was covering Galveston...understandable, but is it too much to ask that the media stick a cub reporter in the "boonies" so the people who fled the "boonies" can get word on the conditions there, post storm?

He was still a Clinton hack. ;D
I remember when he first came up for renewal in 2000 or 2001. GWB reappointed him largely because the markets were not comfortable with any of the alternatives. Greenspan did OK, I think. It's not a job where you can please all people all of the time. The one mistake that was made during his tenure was that interest rates stayed at 1% in the 2004-05 period for too long.

Politely... not too firm, lest she piss off Rangel and the NY delegation, to say nothing of the Congressional Black Caucus.
She needs Rangel to step down on his own, because she can't afford losing the CBC or the NY delegations at this point. Rangel sticks around, it only adds to her headache as the GOP can and should take advantage of the "most ethical Congress ever mantra" Pelosi has been feeding for months with no tangible results (other than showing they're no more ethical than the GOP they replaced.
In that case, Rangel should stay put.

He should have stayed down while he was ahead.

Its a good thing I got onto LGF today because by the time the election is over (and especially if McCain and Palin win!) I will only be able to be here or maybe watching the... gee, I can't even think of a channel that I will be able to watch without knowing that they are biased or one of their actors gave an opinion on the election...

How can you age well if you are a crabby, earnest moonbat? Look at Robert Redford. GLECH. Their soul just poisons the outward appearance.
So true. chevy looks really bad and redford scares me. Would hate to see either coming at me on lonely street.

Either he thinks he's Woodrow Wilson or he thinks he's Benito Mussolini. Let's see if he can make the trains run on time first.
He wants to institute a strain of facism & call it progressive.Michelle said something to the effect that Barack won't let you continue the way that you are(paraphrase)
He somehow beieves that he is running for an absolute dictatorship.
Very dangerous.

Hey, you survived Ike! Good on ya!
How's it goin' now?
Still no power, no idea of when we will get power. Don't even ask, you ungrateful plebes, etc.
However, both freezers are clean, the contents I just could not cook and feed to ANYONE are rotting in the garbage cans, and the downed oak chunks are stacked neatly as possible on the curb to await the Second Coming (IMO; I will believe the county will help when I see them). We have hot and cold running water, a gas stove that is now almost redundant given the scarcity of food that needs cookin', and a Kroger grocery store that is somewhat open two miles away.
Meanwhile, the kids are no problem, the wife is constantly unhappy, and I have been hiding at work, LOL.

OT
CNN's afternoon idiot - Rick Sanchez - is once again proving that he wouldn't recognize "fair and unbiased" if if fell on hit from a great height.
After slashing Gov Palin on the firing of an official and then hearing from a Republican spokesperson who stated the following:
that the two lead people on the investigation are Senators;
they are on public record as BHO supporters;
they have already signaled that their report will be another 'Oct surprise', Sanchez has the nerve to ask:Well, if she has nothing to hide why won't she cooperate, you know, answer the questions in the issue?
Where do they drag these people up?
* * *
This Rick Sanchez is of Cuban exile.
Guess you can't take the Fidel Castro tactics out of some people.

For the MSM (Including FNC), things have grown rather sad regarding the quality of newsgathering.
You probably know this from lurking before you registered, but the MSM seem to get a lot of their 'news' from KOS or LGF.
In the first case, they usually use as the story, the fact that some moonbat at KOS said thus-and-such, and continue on allowing the allegations to remain unchallenged.
In the second case, it's more subtle. A story that originated here (or was publicized here) gets reported as if the MSM gathered that news on their own with no attribution to LGF.
