Sunday Morning Open

Open | Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:21:32 am PDT

Here’s an open thread as we wrestle with the CSS code. We’re experimenting with a table-less CSS design, but running into a problem that causes the left sidebar to disappear off the left side of the screen when the window is smaller than the width of the content. Tried setting a min-width on the body, but it has no effect. Back to the salt mine...

It's Sunday afternoon here in NJ.

What happened to the Buzz link? Not that I'll miss it, to be honest...

I have to write lesson plans for my English 10 RR. I also have to decode the previous teacher's grade-book and figure out how she wanted to weight exams and all that neat stuff. Can we turn this into the Sunday Brunch & Drinking Thread?

Why would I not have anything on the sidebars showing?

It was okay here this morning for me, now it's just the thread or just comments on this page.

TIA

8 Charles  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 11:25:42am

I took the buzz links off the front page, because their code isn't suited for multiple links; it has to load a Javascript file for every post, which was too much overhead.

They're still there on the individual pages.

Fox News just ran a piece that explains the financial crisis for anyone who does not have any clue as to what is going on. It is basically "for dummies". The MSM will not run something like this because it points the finger at the CRA, Clinton, Obama, Frank, Dodd, Schumer. I am sickened by the way the MSM has covered their fraking eyes on this.

McCain better speak of this clearly and forcefully Tuesday.

Charles, try using that Firefox plugin called "Firebug" which can help you figure out what is causing the problem.

I don't think he's fearful. I think he's a hero who's seen war, been tortured, held his place with honor. Nothing else can ever be that bad, even politics. I used to work in a really stressful job, with people's lives in my hands. Nothing else has ever been terribly stressful since then, when I stop and think about it.

37 lawhawk  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 11:37:24am

re: #29 DeafDog

That would be George Lazenby. Connery was excellent, and I thought that Pierce Brosnan was very good (should have been Bond instead of Dalton but for the Remington Steele run), and Moore was a more humorous take on Bond (fun when growing up the late 70s early 80s.

Craig is far more dangerous and menacing than any of the other Bonds. You never quite got that with even Connery. Sure, you've got the cold determination, but Craig's Bond is relentless in pursuit of his objectives.

342 yards used to be an offensive explosion for an entire game. Now they have that in the first half.

It could actually be worse than 27-6 right now. Of course, a whole half to go, but it's looking good.

I'm starting to think this team has potential.

The Moore movies were got to be too campy for me....they took a good campiness and went to far. The Space Shuttle adventure (Octopussy?) was way far fetched.

The last bond flick (with Craig) had a totally different feel to it than the Moore movies. The chase scene in the construction site was awesome! It reminded me of the "Bourne Identity" movies with Matt (good actor, hate his polities) Damon. You got the feeling that it just might be real.

re: #37 lawhawk

I agree, Craig is much more dangerous. Bond has always been suave and all that, but beginning with Roger Moore and then Pierce Brosnan, the character became more like a Super Hero than a real guy. I think casting Craig was the best thing that has happened to this franchise in a long time. He get's beat up, makes mistakes and misjudges. Of course, in the end, he still gets the bad guys, but it's not so predetermined as previous versions of Bond. Mrs. Desert Dog has voted Craig as the best Bond ever, too - for different reasons, no doubt.

Meanwhile, Michael Yon gives you facts from the field...totally different and more real from what you will hear in the MSM. That was a bit of a rant, but my point is that the MSM may be reporting, but the mud is comming from the campaign itself, because the reporters are nothing but faces.

Anyone that participates in the Eurofascism threads and hasn't read this article yet that I've been posting ought to read it now. It's very important to understand what the left-right continuum means in the continental European tradition. I see a lot of posters who don't get it at all; who don't understand the differences between the American and European traditions, and the discussion gets hopelessly muddled. It's a bit of a heavy read, but worthwhile, so here it is again.

Go to a dark and quiet space.

Sit or lie down.

Close your eyes.

Ask yourself, 'Where's the pain?'

Describe to yourself exactly where it is. (center of stomach, back of head, left side of neck, etc.)

Once you pinpoint the pain, ask yourself, "What does it look like?"
(shape of a ball, pencil, door, etc.)

Then ask, "How much fluid can it hold?" (1 oz., 6 oz. ?)

Then ask, "What color is the fluid?"

Then wait a few seconds...and ask again, "Where's the pain?"

It will either move or disappear. If it moves, start over. It'll finally go away.

You will never be bothered again by a poll or prediction. The information will just bounce off of you.

/This is my prediction. :)

So hey, look at this:

SEC charges 5 L.A. brokers on subprime mortgages
By Robert Daniel, MarketWatch

Last update: 4:28 a.m. EDT Oct. 5, 2008
TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) - The Securities and Exchange Commission charged that five Los Angeles-area brokers "put their customers at risk by refinancing their homes with subprime mortgages that they could not afford."

The agency, in a statement on Friday, said it charged the five with securities fraud, saying that the brokers executed the refinancings to "fraudulently sell [the homeowners] unsuitable securities." It filed the case in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
...

The SEC is going to prosecute bad mortgage lenders? A mortgage is a security?

I don't think so.

The SEC, late to the party, but already drunk.

With the specific width wrapper your left and right columns will not resize with the window.

The inmates run the asylum. I think I read somewhere that the percentage of journalism professors registered as Democrats hovers around 90%. I also believe that is the same percentage of editors of major newspapers in the USA as well. I am not sure of TV news figures, but you can see just by simple observation the majority of them look at life through a leftward leaning and slighty red lense. They live in a little cocoon where they all march in lock-step to the drum beat of liberal ideology. They also believe they are objective, but maybe not so this election cycle. They are actually coming out of the closest this time around. Not that it will matter. They will churn out a new supply of brainwashed, smug know-it-alls to continue their warped worldview

These are the same guys that sit around and cannot understand why their circulation number are dropping like a lead balloon or why FOX News kicks their asses so bad...if you tell yourself the same lie over and over, eventually, you will start believing it yourself.

I'm not angry that the msm is biased, I can deal with that. It's that they will not admit to it.
Of course they can't. To do so would remove the last thin cover they try to wrap themselves in when anyone accuses them of false reporting.
They've completely lost all respect of the average American and it has hurt their bottom line. Advertisers have found better more targeted platforms to get buyers attention. I stopped buying the NYT. What was the point. Tell me I can't name a topic and you couldn't write the headline and the first paragraph as slanted by them. When you can predict what a NEWS paper will print then it's no longer NEWS it's a fairy tale.

"once upon a time the big bad racist republicans used mean words against a brave black man who was just trying to save the world".

Now you fill in the rest. Hey we're all J School grads now.

They're also responsible for the anger from the left. They dole out their left-leaning opinions and stories that create the impression that being progressive/liberal/leftist is cool, intelligent, what the majority of the universe believes.
Then when reality rises up in the form of the conservative half of this country, they have a fit: "How can this be? Conservatism isn't cool, it's not good, the people who believe in Conservatism are hillbilly, redneck, incestuous morons from the backwoods." They are no longer equipped to accept anyone else's viewpoint. I blame our indoctrinaire educational system run by Union hacks and the mass media who have a vested interest in manipulating what people think.

Among other things, the movie's writing was a quantum leap better than any other Bond movie. If you see it again, listen to, for instance, the dialogue when Bond first meets Vesper Lynd on the train. Compared to Bond dialogue from other movies, it's Shakespeare.

Among other things, the movie's writing was a quantum leap better than any other Bond movie. If you see it again, listen to, for instance, the dialogue when Bond first meets Vesper Lynd on the train. Compared to Bond dialogue from other movies, it's Shakespeare.

Too true, and I also liked thelack of fancy schmancy weaponry. The chase scene in the beginning was ART! I still hold my breath when I watch it. Plus, this was more of a cerebral film, although when the action came it was faboo. I loved Judy Dench in this one as well. I can't wait for Quantum to come out!

Sorry I don't have the link, but Condi was really deconstructing the whole idea of Obie as the black candidate.

So, he isn't authentically black enough to be down for the struggle, was that her argument?

I just don't know what to expect out of Condi any more, she has been so far off on the Israeli/Palestinian thing. Actually, she's been entirely out of sight for months, hasn't she? Good.

Russian troops start dismantling Georgia posts

The war began Aug. 7 when Georgian troops launched an offensive to regain control of South Ossetia, one of two Georgian separatist regions where Russia has troops stationed as peacekeepers...
....Russia recognized the independence of both regions after the fighting. So far, only Nicaragua and the Hamas government in Gaza have followed suit with recognition.

meanwhile
Merkel to Russia: Georgia territory non-negotiable

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct 2 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel told her Russian hosts during a visit on Thursday that Georgia's territorial integrity was non-negotiable, implicitly rebuking Moscow for recognising two Georgian regions as independent states.

Merkel also said in opening remarks at a joint news conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that countries should be able to decide freely if they wanted to join the NATO military alliance.

And, that is just the beginning. He apparently has no conscience or sense of right and wrong. That kids needs some serious help. And, I am guessing that his parents need some help too. I have a 7 year old and I know exactly where he is at all times....

I think the boldness of breaking into the zoo like that, evading the alarm systems, etc. shows one of the key psychological characteristics of the sociopath---the extreme cool, lack of fear of punishment.

His family has a history with that zoo. Chances are that he his home life is encouraging this sort of behavior.

The MSM has already tried to portray her as a lightweight and a fool. They did that so when she does attack, they can dismiss it. What needs to happen is from McCain on down, the entire Republican apparatus needs to start hammering all of this stuff home. Obama has gotten a pass and that is not right. In favor of down: This whole "healing America's soul" nonsense sounds like a load of moonbat drivel. And with regards to your other post about "white guilt" I'd have to say I've about had my fill of that concept. Why should any American or Briton feel guilty. Out of 6000 years of recorded human history, where nations and races of all races and creeds enslaved their own or other nations and races, only two nations have acted to end slavery and they did it through military action, the British Royal Navy put an end to the Atlantic slave trade and the American Union Army crushed the Confederacy and ended slavery in America.

Save the guilt for the Arab slave traders who started the whole African trade to begin with.

Net result. Ding down.

Well there is also the bedwetting at an older age and a facination with fire to consider as well. The underlying factor is the feeling that the subject gets when torturing. Also the motivation behind the torturing. The torturing of an animal by a sociopath is often the first step...they know the animal is helpless and they torture for the pure pleasure and power they get from the torture. Normal people are horrified at this behavior and aside from the normal experimentation with salt and slugs, or magnifying glasses and ants, don't engage in this behavior.

Jeffery Dahmer first started with road kill and moved up to killing animals then humans.

How will that help the Ukraine when Russia invades?

He will get out the silver platter and polish it up for Vlad the Impaler. What will Obama do when Iran closes the Straight of Hormuz? What will he do when Hezbollah start launching missiles into Israel? What will he do when anything like this happens. I can guess with a fair amount of certainty that something like the events mentioned above (or worse) will happen during his first 4 years. And, I can also guess that he will not handle these things well. Unless of course, what he is saying now is just a load of BS so he can get elected. Nothing he has written, done or accomplished tells me he is ready for this position. Nothing.

So you want to label a seven-year-old as a "psychopath"? (In the literature there's currently a huge debate as to whether or not adolescents should ever be given that label -- since it does translate into "incurable". I'm opposed to a loose, any-and-all, labeling of adolescent offenders -- the term will lose all meaning if everyone who does something despicable in the eyes of the public suddenly becomes "an incurable psychopath.")

So the Obama campaign is getting a challenge on fraudulent campaign donations, finally.

This summer, watchdog groups asked both campaigns to share more information about its small donors. The McCain campaign agreed; the Obama campaign did not. "They could've done themselves a service" by heeding the suggestions, said Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics.

Interesting how you make it a central theme of your campaign to boast of all the small donors contributing to your campaign, then when asked exactly who these "small donors" are, they discover modesty. YES! My thoughts exactly for quite some time. I look in the mirror and I'm not WHITE. In summer some parts of me even get a slight brown tone. Otherwise I'm beige or in those secret places where the sun don't get to; it's beigish white.

I would like to start a push back on the term "White People". Who exactly do they mean? They're not black just like I'm not white. Having lived in the poorer sections of most towns, I have discovered that many "people of color" are more race conscious among themselves than the "whites" that they point fingers at. What most folks encounter as far as prejudice is "not-like-what-we're-comfortable-with" reactions and also the perceptions in majority/minority situations. If you're in the minority then you will come up against more bad/hurtful majority people. Except in the realm of crime. There, sadly, minorities are about 11-15% of pop. but commit 30-45% of crime. These are not conviction stats, these are from eyewitness and victim accounts. Recall Jesse Jackson's comment about being relieved to see 3 white guys behind him at night and not 3 black guys.

Comment: How come when I order something online, I have to specifiy my "real" NAME & ADDRESS exactly as it is onfile with my Credit Card Company or the order is not processed, but the Obama types just take the numbers and run the charge "no questions asked"?

This sounds like either incompetence (in which case he's not qualified to be president), or (in the style of Chicago mob politics) is willfully turning a blind eye to these schemes in order to get more money (in which case someone should be going to jail-- either from the campaign or the "real" donors-- which can be found very easily with their credit card number).

Think about this a little further. Because of the way the Obama types accept donations-- people could even be using STOLEN CREDIT CARDS... Why would they setup a donation system that would encourage something like this?

He makes a valid point. Can you imagine getting a Credit Card statement with a charge from the Obama campaign because your number was stolen and used without your name attached?

Wow, Dianne, you're a bit slow on the uptake, aren't ya? The last six weeks have been absolutely filled with smears, only they were against Sarah Palin, Todd Palin, Bristol Palin and Baby Trig Palin by extension.

But those don't count in Dem-land because they were against the conservative, regardless of whether or not they were true.

Casino Royale was the best Bond movie made in a long, long while.

I just dusted off someold copies of Dr.No (1962) and From Russia with Love (1963), and not only is it amazing how well they hold up 45 years later (though with some shades of "Austin Powers"), but how much better they are then most of the crap Bond action movies from the 80s and 90s.

A little plot and character depth goes a lot further than fancier explosions and ridiculous gadgets.

I'm a nice, toasty California Desert Beige, myself, about a half-shade darker than one of my AA friends (not to mention she is my part-time boss). Once in a while someone will remark that I am darker that she is. Me, I just keep my mouth shut about it for a few good reasons.

Ooh, ouch. Rosenfels is lacking in all-around awareness. Houston played a damned good game, the QB lost it almost single-handedly, unfortunately, IMO. On the last Texans' touchdown drive, I watched as he stretched the ball out while on his back with one hand. That's when I knew something wasn't right with that guy. That's a move out of junior high.

I don't even have the words to describe what I feel right now.

re: #203 Moe Katz

White guilt is not entirely unjustified IMHO.

Any guilt that one has over things that they are not actually responsible for is always entirely unjustified. The only people that should feel guilty over historic injustice is those that feel that those things were justified and morally acceptable. By default, those people are racists, and are not going to feel guilty anyway. That shame is on them, not me. Even then, that shame is only extended to those living and breathing today, and not their ancestors nor should it be passed down to their descendants.

The entire concept of racial inclusiveness is racist. There were white abolitionists from the inception of institutionalized slavery. Given time, they won that fight. In the end, the side of good triumphed over evil, and it is triumphing more and more, every day of every year. I'm no more connected to those abolitionist ancestors than I am the slavers of the past, but given the opportunity to in life I have certainly ideologically and morally sided with the former, not the latter. I shoulder no burden of guilt because harbor not hatred.

The injustices of the past are there as lessons for us to move forward, not as wounds to slow us down. Those that sow discord with racially divisive rhetoric; those that need the catharsis of a black President above all things are morally on the same side as those that committed those historical injustices they claim to want to 'correct'.

Saying Affirmative Action is 'ok' as long as both parties are qualified itself is just as bad. So, if you put up two candidates for a position, and both are equally qualified, the white one should be disqualified because of the color of his skin?

Affirmative Action isn't combating racism. It's just additional racism. You can't legislate away hatred. You can't pass laws that tell people to respect each other and act as decent human-beings. The vast majority of the time, there should not be political solutions to cultural problems.

MLK did more to bridge gaps than Affirmative Action, the NAACP, Scholarship programs ever did. He did it by winning hearts and minds. He didn't write anything into law that would force people to pretend to respect him. He just flat out earned their respect.

Forcing my hand into hiring someone based on quotas rather than my judgement, and denying me education and employment based on the color of my skin by the federal government doesn't earn my respect. Quite the opposite. Do you really think that if people like Sharpton, Jackson, Obama, etc really have their way in terms of getting recompense and forcing equality that it will heal anything? Do you really think that a single black President in 230 years will really be enough?

I grew up in Baltimore, and I know my fair share of Sharptons and Michelle Obamas and other Community Organizer types. Its not about correcting historic injustices. It's about revenge. The same world view that makes Fisk believe that he deserved to get beat by Muslim thugs, is the same exact world view that fuels white guilt.

That world view has absolutely nothing to do with taking the lessons of history to heart. It is all about hatred. I don't feel I need to, or should want to feel commiseration with those that hate and I certainly don't feel guilty for that perspective either. Anyone who does, has not taken the lessons of history to heart in my opinion.

What the hell is going on? Iceland has just crashed. Yeah. The country.

Iceland is on the brink of collapse. Inflation and interest rates are raging upwards. The krona, Iceland's currency, is in freefall and is rated just above those of Zimbabwe and Turkmenistan. One of the country's three independent banks has been nationalised, another is asking customers for money, and the discredited government and officials from the central bank have been huddled behind closed doors for three days with still no sign of a plan. International banks won't send any more money and supplies of foreign currency are running out.

re: #278 DeafDog

In 2008, that is correct.

If this were the 1950, however, there might have been something to it. Irony of ironies, however, is that the policies that were put in place to assuage 'white guilt' actually destroyed the black families, creating a semi-permenant underclass.

Let's get down to cases. If "white guilt" is a valid concept in any sense, then isn't "Democrat guilt" even more powerful? After all, it was the Democrat Party that created Jim Crow and protected the lynch mobs of the South. The Democrats were perfectly happy to include in their number Orval Faubus (standing in the schoolhouse door in Little Rock), George Wallace ("Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!") and Robert Byrd (the former Grand Kleagle who is now the Democrat's choice for President Pro-Tempore of the U.S. Senate).

If people whose skin happens to be white today (or happened to be white in 1950) are culpable for everything evil done in the name of White supremacy, how much more so the people who VOLUNTARILY joined the political party that stood for that very brand of evil?

Ho-kay, then where does Obama fit in that description?

[Link: www.obamacrimes.com...]

...Obama would have been required to file applications with the U. S. State Department and follow the legal procedures to become a naturalized citizen in the United States, when he returned from Indonesia. If Obama and/or his family failed to follow these procedures, then Obama is an illegal alien.

Regardless of whether Obama was officially adopted, (which required a Court process), by his Indonesian stepfather, Lolo Soetoro, or his birth was acknowledged (which only required the signing of a birth acknowledgement form), by Lolo Soetoro, one of which had to occur in order for Obama to have the name Barry Soetoro and his citizenship status listed as “Indonesian”, in either and/or both cases Obama’s name was required to be changed to the Indonesian father’s name, and Obama became a natural citizen of Indonesia. This is proven by the school records in Jakarta, Indonesia showing

Obama’s name as Barry Soetoro and his citizenship as Indonesian. Again, the registration of a child in the public schools in Jakarta, Indonesia was verified with the Government Records on file with the Governmental Agencies...

Let's see now - Sarah's rally yesterday in Carson, CA was held at an open air facility that seated 8,000 max, but crowds were estimated at more than 10,000.

Tomorrow she will be at two rallies in south Florida, one that had to be switched to a bigger facility - an arena - because of the projected masses that wouldn't be able to get in. And they're concerned now that even the new facility won't be big enough to hold all who will be in attendance.

* She drew 10,000 in Media, PA, on a Monday afternoon (3 pm)
* Over 60,000 at the Villages in FL a couple of weeks ago
* Over 20,000 at a rally in Fairfax, VA a while back
* A whopping 10,000 in SO CAL yesterday

Whatever she says will be news, as she's getting the big crowds and in light of her debate performance. No matter how the MSM spins it, they will quote what she says in her speeches. Subliminally, that will stick in many people's minds.

Wasn't Obama on with Bruce Springsteen the other day? Anybody see any coverage of it in the MSM?

All eyes and ears are on the Gov from Alaska, and she's loaded for bear and firing for effect.

Good Pics of the SoCal Rally yesterday. Read the comments, too. A couple of moonbats, but mostly very encouraging!

Palin has my heart, she hunts goes fishing she is very smart and very beautiful. If I was not married and if she was not I would be going after her like a stray dog smelling heat!

Yeah, no doubt. I loved I Am Legend. I ordered the book and should be receiving it tomorrow or Tuesday, a friend of mine hated I Am Legend (the movie) because the book was so much better, as is usually the case.

Now what is the discussion concerning James Bond?

I agree regarding the movie; never read the book, which I am told is very different, very quirky.

The discussion regarding Bond was, more or less: "Casino Royale (2006) was hand-down the best Bond movie. Discuss."

Getting Netflix is on the "to-do" list.

Definitely a good deal. Less than $10 a month, I get all the movies I can watch, and I can pause my membership whenever a deployment rears its ugly head. On the down side, they do not have The Usual Suspects...what's up with that?

Casino Royale was definitely one of the best, if not the best. The World is Not Enough is up there too. I used to like A View to a Kill, Christopher Walken is one of my favorites, but to watch it today, it was kind of cheesy. There, discussion ended, I need to go ride my bike before it gets too dark.

"In the literature..." you no doubt mean medical journals, etc. Some professionals are allergic to labels of any kind, whether they apply correctly or not. I, as a non-medical professional, can label my heart away.

If an adult is finally labeled a psychopath, which is agreed upon in professional circles as incurable, then what was that adult as a child? What was he/she as an adolescent? They were the psychopaths no one wanted to label. They certainly didn't wake up one day and become a psychopath. I can only imagine the havoc they wreaked on those in close proximity throughout their childhood and adolescence because no one dared tell the truth.

If a child of 7 goes on a killing spree of animals in a heartless, cold and cruel manner, it is fairly likely that child is a psychopath. Having been a teacher for over 20 years, I can certainly spot a child who enjoys inflicting pain on others without empathy, and who shows not a modicum of remorse for any wrongdoing.

Professionals may not want to label them, but someone had better keep on eye on them for the safety of those around them.

If/when McCain and Palin are inaugurated in January, McCain's first action should be to kick the Media right out of the White House. No more White House Press room, no more MSM's swanning around making snotty, half-informed comments. Status quo ante (pre-Eisenhower) should be revived. McCain can call in whatever journos he wishes to speak to at any time. What are the rest of the MSM brats going to do? Write something nasty about McCain/Palin? They've pretty well shot that bolt.

His second act should be to pardon those two unjustly prosecuted/persecuted border guards, jailed for shooting the Justice Dept's pet drug dealer in the ass.

I am not a Spielberg fan, in the main; I think he is an accomplished appropriator of the skills of others.

I think that, within the limitations of what Schindler's List was, he did it well. It would have been a much better film if he had ended it on a less schmaltzy note.

His best film by far, IMHO, is Empire of the Sun. It was... perfect. One of my top 5.

#313 J.S.

It isn't a reluctance to label them. The correct diagnosis for a child or adolescent is Conduct Disorder, which suggests a full evaluation to rule out other possibilities, such as depression, ADHD, some sort of trauma, etc. There is a lot of overlap of symptoms in child psychopathology so diagnosing has to be done very carefully. Conduct Disorder is not considered incurable or untreatable. Sociopaths can be treated also but the likelihood of positive results is limited.

The term "psychopath" (as used in the UK), or "sociopath" (as used in the U.S.), doesn't refer to a mental disorder or a psychiatric condition (all of this you may already be aware of). It refers to a personality disorder. And this personality disorder does not always result in criminally deviant behavior. Hare (a retired prof at the University of British Columbia) has designed a test for psychopathic personality disorder...(you can't administer it to seven year olds). Anyway, one of the "problems" is that lots and lots of people who score highly on the test are also not in institutions (they're not criminals, they're in the "general population" -- some extremely successful, wealthy, skilled, etc.) (It's one of those real problem areas...you can't really use it as a predictor of deviant, criminal behavior...)

re: #339 jcw46

Likewise with Chris Rock and his "N***as vs. Black People" bit from his Bring The Pain HBO special about the differences between black people who work their asses off to get something and somewhere and those who live the "thug life". One of the parts in the act was that he carried a pistol for protection and that, "[w]hen I go to the money machine tonight, alright, I ain't looking over my back for the media: I'm looking for n***as!"

I work with a sociopath. The dude is positively scary and I predict he will murder someone at work one day.

I'm the only one who has seen this kook go off the deep end and no one believes me.

Respect your instincts. If at all possible, get a transfer out of the department or to another location. I'm sure there are many individuals who had the same instincts you have and are sorry they did nothing when a fellow co-worker decided to go postal. #467 goddessoftheclassroon gave excellent advice in going to HR.

The best defense is not having a relationship with them, not making yourself vulnerable to them and never being alone with them (I know, in a work environment that's impossible). Documentation is your best friend.

Studying sociopaths is helpful, which helps change our behavior. There's a book I recommend that's an easy read for the lay person - In Sheep's Clothing - How to deal with manipulative people, by George K. Simon, Ph.D. It's helped me tremendously.

Great point....Ted Bundy is an excellent example of what you just stated. The average Sociopath comes off as a "normal" guy/gal and if said sociopath kills the majority of his/her "friends" (they don't have what are considered real friends, on;y those he/she lets believe that there is a relationship...or there are those who are easily manipulated) say they never saw it coming....

#548 J.S.

I don't think we're that far off from agreement here. My post was in response to the horrendous behavior of that child, not, as I stated earlier, as a professional. From my reading on this subject, there is a spectrum on the scale of sociopathic behavior. Our society is riddled with sociopaths, many of whom know well how to stay under the radar while still being extremely destructive and manipulative in families and on the job. Not all sociopaths kill, but killing at a young age in the way this child killed definitely puts him somewhere on this spectrum.

#533 SurferDoc -

It isn't a reluctance to label them. The correct diagnosis for a child or adolescent is Conduct Disorder, which suggests a full evaluation to rule out other possibilities, such as depression, ADHD, some sort of trauma, etc. There is a lot of overlap of symptoms in child psychopathology so diagnosing has to be done very carefully. Conduct Disorder is not considered incurable or untreatable. Sociopaths can be treated also but the likelihood of positive results is limited.

Thank you - I appreciate and respect the professional fields that deal with childhood disorders (my daughter is in this field) - I was responding to a post by J.S. as a complete lay person making an observation about this child's behavior. I've had a few of these types as students, and almost in every case the school (which is private) had to ask them to leave, as no one on staff had the capability of handling their extreme behavior. The major concern of the school was the safety of other students.

An escape plan is always good, no matter where you work or live.

I once had a guy break into my house in the dead of night. I didn't freak out, I just chambered the 9mm and fired.

I missed, but he ran (the loud BANG has a lovely deterant effect and I was ready to lay out a second round anyway) and I got a nice hole in my wall.
Oddly enough, I just rolled over and flicked on the light and called 911 . Once the cops arrived, I broke down.

The thing that saved me was the fact that I lay out scenarios in my mind on a daily basis. What will I do if.... etc. If you plan for the worst, then you can handle it.

I do the same thing.

A few years ago, my school had a "code red"--intruder with a weapon in the building, Because I had "rehearsed" scenarios in my mind, I was able to give directions with authority, without panic. I got my students behind my desk, and I stacked desks in front of the (locked) door (the adrenalin rush allowed me to stack them six high--still the stuff of legends!). I then gave my students books and told them to throw them at anyone who got through the door.

It turned out that the person was outside the school, so we weren't in real danger--but we weren't to know that at the time.

I practiced and practiced at the range. The cool thing the BF taught me was that one can chamber and fire in one smooth motion with a Browning...(I love my Browning!). All in all, it was smooth, and I'm proud of myself for being so clear headed. If he'd have kept coming, he'd have been a corpse on my floor. I didn't stop pointing the gun at the door till I heard the cops approaching.

The 911 gal knew I had a gun at the door, I told her.

I'm assuming she told the responding officers cause I got a "Put your weapon down".

Which I gladly did.

Then I broke down.

The police were very nice.

I love living in a smallish town!

Sociopaths are scary because they can blend in. They do it because they know it the only way to control.

They are master manipulators - the embodiment of true evil, because what they do is with intent - whether it's to destroy families by causing division, ruin people's reputations by whispering campaigns or false accusations, or by actually killing people. They gravitate to three particular professions where they hide best and can be the most controlling: Church, Law Enforcement and Politics.

Quite a few grizzlies live inside the Anchorage city limits. With 80 miles of wooded bike/ski paths in town, they have plenty of room to hide.

Missing got the job done. Hitting them gets expensive.

Missing can be MORE expensive, given that missed bullets sometimes find their way into things they aren't supposed to.

You're not supposed to take the shot unless you feel you have a good likelihood of connecting.

As to the expense, that depends on the jurisdiction. I know a woman who shot her husband to death under what might be called "questionable" circumstances and who wasn't ever charged with a crime.

I'd rather pay for a jury trial (or cleaned carpet) then take return fire from a scared intruder and/or his previously unseen associate.

Missing can be MORE expensive, given that missed bullets sometimes find their way into things they aren't supposed to.

You're not supposed to take the shot unless you feel you have a good likelihood of connecting.

You are right, of course. I was being flippant. On that occasion, missing was good enough. Where I live, hitting them means you are likely to lose your job, your home, and sometimes your kids. I've seen it. All said and done, though, I would choose stay alive and pay the price, whatever that may be.

(Having had some personal/unfortunate encounters with what I would call a psychopath), i would strongly urge anyone to flee -- get away as quickly as possible...the sooner, the better. Never, ever (no matter what the person alleges) believe, "O, now they have changed...they've made a promise!" or "I must help them out..." NO. Forget it...

Check out this bull moose wandering around Anchorage. They like it in town because there's no hunting allowed, and their only enemies (yes, IN TOWN) are automobiles and grizzly bears.

Quite a few grizzlies live inside the Anchorage city limits. With 80 miles of wooded bike/ski paths in town, they have plenty of room to hide.
.

That's cool, I would still have it for dinner.

It is. How does one cope with a person with no conscience? It's instinctive to want to fix, or pity them. They are people. But then you get trapped between doing what's good for you and your family and doing what's right.

It sucks and I don't envy you. You are in my prayers.

Thank you for your prayers, as that's been all we can do to counteract this. You mentioned instinctively wanting to help - that's one of the devices she uses - comes across as a victim who needs protecting and sucks you into helping her, giving advice, then twists everything against you. And people believe her because she comes across as so helpless. Being extremely petite and pretty also helps.

It gets worse when faith is involved.

God loves us all, even the sociopaths, and (making this personal) feel compelled to try to help or stand by the sociopath. OTOH, does God want me to sacrifice my life, love or happiness for my brother or sister...even is he or she is evil...and I believe that there are some who are born evil...thus the lack of conscience....How far do I take the beam in the eye thing before abandoning it?

Here's the rub - she is what some people call "a wonderful woman of God." Very pious and demur to your face. I've been working on forgiving her, which is what I'm required to do, but thankfully the Lord doesn't require me to continue associating with her, even though she's now a part of the family.

Hmmmm..which State do you live in? I have a sister like that. Then there's my husband's ex-wife.

We're in Southern California, where there's apparently lots of them.
