Sunday Morning Open

Open | Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:21:32 am PDT

Here’s an open thread as we wrestle with the CSS code. We’re experimenting with a table-less CSS design, but running into a problem that causes the left sidebar to disappear off the left side of the screen when the window is smaller than the width of the content. Tried setting a min-width on the body, but it has no effect. Back to the salt mine...

I took the buzz links off the front page, because their code isn't suited for multiple links; it has to load a Javascript file for every post, which was too much overhead.

They're still there on the individual pages.

Fox News just ran a piece that explains the financial crisis for anyone who does not have any clue as to what is going on. It is basically "for dummies". The MSM will not run something like this because it points the finger at the CRA, Clinton, Obama, Frank, Dodd, Schumer. I am sickened by the way the MSM has covered their fraking eyes on this.

McCain better speak of this clearly and forcefully Tuesday.

I don't think he's fearful. I think he's a hero who's seen war, been tortured, held his place with honor. Nothing else can ever be that bad, even politics. I used to work in a really stressful job, with people's lives in my hands. Nothing else has ever been terribly stressful since then, when I stop and think about it.

That would be George Lazenby. Connery was excellent, and I thought that Pierce Brosnan was very good (should have been Bond instead of Dalton but for the Remington Steele run), and Moore was a more humorous take on Bond (fun when growing up the late 70s early 80s.

Craig is far more dangerous and menacing than any of the other Bonds. You never quite got that with even Connery. Sure, you've got the cold determination, but Craig's Bond is relentless in pursuit of his objectives.

342 yards used to be an offensive explosion for an entire game. Now they have that in the first half.

It could actually be worse than 27-6 right now. Of course, a whole half to go, but it's looking good.

The Moore movies were got to be too campy for me....they took a good campiness and went to far. The Space Shuttle adventure (Octopussy?) was way far fetched.

The last bond flick (with Craig) had a totally different feel to it than the Moore movies. The chase scene in the construction site was awesome! It reminded me of the "Bourne Identity" movies with Matt (good actor, hate his polities) Damon. You got the feeling that it just might be real.

I agree, Craig is much more dangerous. Bond has always been suave and all that, but beginning with Roger Moore and then Pierce Brosnan, the character became more like a Super Hero than a real guy. I think casting Craig was the best thing that has happened to this franchise in a long time. He get's beat up, makes mistakes and misjudges. Of course, in the end, he still gets the bad guys, but it's not so predetermined as previous versions of Bond. It's very important to understand what the left-right continuum means in the continental European tradition. I see a lot of posters who don't get it at all; who don't understand the differences between the American and European traditions, and the discussion gets hopelessly muddled. It's a bit of a heavy read, but worthwhile, so here it is again.

Go to a dark and quiet space.

Sit or lie down.

Close your eyes.

Ask yourself, 'Where's the pain?'

Describe to yourself exactly where it is. (center of stomach, back of head, left side of neck, etc.)

Once you pinpoint the pain, ask yourself, "What does it look like?"
(shape of a ball, pencil, door, etc.)

Then ask, "How much fluid can it hold?" (1 oz., 6 oz. ?)

Then ask, "What color is the fluid?"

Then wait a few seconds...and ask again, "Where's the pain?"

It will either move or disappear. If it moves, start over. It'll finally go away.

You will never be bothered again by a poll or prediction. The information will just bounce off of you.

/This is my prediction. :)

So hey, look at this:

SEC charges 5 L.A. brokers on subprime mortgages
By Robert Daniel, MarketWatch

Last update: 4:28 a.m. EDT Oct. 5, 2008
TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) - The Securities and Exchange Commission charged that five Los Angeles-area brokers "put their customers at risk by refinancing their homes with subprime mortgages that they could not afford."

The agency, in a statement on Friday, said it charged the five with securities fraud, saying that the brokers executed the refinancings to "fraudulently sell [the homeowners] unsuitable securities." It filed the case in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
...

The SEC is going to prosecute bad mortgage lenders? A mortgage is a security?

I don't think so.

I put the old design (with tables, yech) back until this is debugged a bit more.

Reload the page and you'll be back to normal.

Oh goody, I can select text again. But strangely, the ctrl-F is still working, too! And yes, the left column is top-aligned again, hurrah.

Saw "An American Carol" Friday night. Flashes of the Airplane! brand of parody humor, and a couple of flashes of genuine Why We Fight sentiment. I recommend it highly.

American Thinker has a good post today on MSM and how we should view them.

THEY ARE THE ENEMY!

They need to be made into the story: there need to be opinion pieces and Fox News items asking why CNN, MSNBC and the New York Times censor themselves of any facts that might reflect badly on Obama. Make the MSM have to answer to the charge that they refuse to present the full truth, make them defend their self-stated reputation for telling the whole story without bias.

Obama endorsements that John McCain would never get:

The Taliban
Hamas
Hezbollah
Hugo Chavez
Fidel Castro
The surviving members of the Weather Underground
Black Liberation Theology supporters
Louis Farrakhan
Jane Fonda, Sean Penn, Susan Surrender, et al
Al Qaida
Muammar Gaddafi
Communist Party of the USA
Vladimir Putin
The entire MSM of the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia

I am sure I miss some other obvious ones too.

In fairness to the often lampooned Bill Oreilly, he's been doing that for months now.

re: #75 newsjunkie_ky

I've started looking at puppies online. I want another pek-a-poo. How do you know it's not a puppy mill? And aren't you rescuing a puppy if you get it away from a puppy mill? My daughter adopted (bought) a puppy from a 'rescue foster mom' but as she had 50 dogs in cages isn't this almost like a puppy mill?

/I feel so guilty for looking.

Wouldn't there be some kind of an organization that keeps a watchout list for these things? Maybe your local animal shelter would know.

Maybe, if it is indeed a puppymill that you've contacted, your local animal shelter would want to know that also.

The reputation of these mills (my understanding) is that the dog you've saved by buying it from the mill will/may be diseased or inbred so badly that it will have genetic problems.

If you see mama winger, she might know.

90%+ of blacks, just because.

Charles,

It might be the position: relative you had on the wrapper and the topdiv - unless you took those off. You could probably just set the topdiv to width: 100% and then have the wrapper underneath with margin: 0 auto; without your positioning. With the specific width wrapper your left and right columns will not resize with the window.

If I'm way off, just say I'm off and I'll go away :)

Great article, Mr. Volsky breaks it down. My favorite line...Attempts to shame the Big Media into objectivity will go nowhere, it will not be moved by gentle rebukes and reminders of the precepts supposedly taught at journalism schools.

I would go to [Link: www.petfinder.com...] -- you can search for the size and age of the pet you want, and they have lots of rescue organizations and shelters listed. I got my puppy from a rescue listed there.
