Okay, folks. Fish or cut bait! To fish one must have a pole or a seine. I prefer the pole. More sporting. Does a fish caught on a pole taste differently than one taken in a seine?

Scientific studies have discovered that fish, caught on a pole and hook, goes through much more trauma than fish caught in a seine, which causes some metabolic changes that can effect the taste of the fish when cooked.

I don't know how the Game Warden would look on my cartin' a seine to my favorite fishin' spot, Walter. I've timed my retrievals through the ice, and I'd say the trauma on average lasts about 30 seconds. After that, they be dead.

Agreed. A decent conservative candidate would have embraced this (or something like it) as an ad campaign. It's hip, easy to understand and it's a marketable concept. Instead McCain is parroting Obama's 'yes we can' and "change" slogans instead of coming up with something himself. This isn't a million dollar ad campaign thought up my high paid marketing experts. This is from some idiot's blog! (apologies to the idiot and his blog, they're both fantastic I'm sure) But why isn't this McCain's core message? There are tons of great ideas out there. Pick one!

OT: LIBOR rates show some signs of easing.

Money-market tensions begin to ease

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Key short-term lending rates fell slightly again Tuesday, raising hopes that massive government bailouts and wide-ranging debt and deposit guarantees will soon begin to thaw the world's frozen interbank lending markets.
The London interbank offered rate, or Libor, for three-month dollar-denominated loans fell to 4.635% from 4.725% Monday, while the one-month rate declined to 4.46875% from 4.56%.
Tuesday's easing is welcome news, but money-market rates "are still very high," said Zach Witton, an analyst at Moody's Economy.com, in a research note.
Libor is closely followed as a measure of borrowing costs in the interbank market.

This is a good sign but the rates are still very high.

High as compared to when? I ran a LIBOR chart here from 2000 to 2008, and rates go from 7 in 2000 to 1 in 2003/2004, and are now around 4.5.

Going back to 1987 (earliest that that site works), the rates got over 10 in 1989.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is the context of LIBOR and why these particular rates are considered high.

But why isn't this McCain's core message?

With over half the U.S. population reliant on the government for a significant portion of their income, it's a hard sell. To her credit, Sarah Palin brought up the subject of personal responsibility in her debate with Plugs. But she still felt the need to temper it by making "greedy Wall Street" the villainous focal point.

Hey- I agree. I don't know what it's been about the press in the last 8 years that's made any republican think they were going to be fair this year. These are the cards we've been dealt, and it's better to deal with them as they are than whine about the cards we wish we had.

Personally- I'd like the Eeyores to stop- to shut up, buck up and do what they can to help defeat 0bama. I'd like to see the so-called republican pundits stop- to shut up, buck up and do what they can to help defeat 0bama. Once we keep this man out of the White House, we can work on what we need to do to fix our "product" to the American people, but 3 weeks before the election is not the time to solve this problem. It's too late. We should have started dealing with it in November 2004. It's waited this long, it can go 3 more weeks, but we have to defeat 0bama first.

For those who missed the good news from the previous thread:

BREAKING: 6th Circuit reverses on TRO (devastation, humiliation for Jennifer Brunner)

A 3-judge panel of the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals recently vacated a temporary restraining order which would effectively make Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner follow the law - and do her job - in preventing election fraud. Tonight, the full court decided to hear the case en banc, and has reimposed the TRO. This is great news.

Here are some highlights:

"So far as this record is concerned, the Secretary has given no tenable exlanation why her current interpretation of the statute, as opposed to the office's prior implementation of the law, remotely furthers the anti-fraud objective of the law."

The Ohio Republican Party's position is "not only sensible but it is also fair - and it also furthers both objectives of HAVA ..."

The court mocks Brunner's defense as "[t]he bureaucrats' lament - that this will be difficult to do."

UPDATE: In looking at the decision, it appears the full court voted 9-6 to hear the case en banc (which means all of them). I'd say the 9-6 vote is a good sign, but doesn't necessarily mean the case will end that way. Tonight's decision has been described as the opportunity to "live and fight another day." But in the world of temporary restraining orders, if you have it, that's all that matters for the time being. And the time being is what is crucial right now.

Second point - the initial district court decision got some press because the judge found that Brunner was actually violating the law. That dialogue was snuffed out by the subsequent reversal. But now it's back. When you run into Jennifer Brunner on the street, you can ask her why she's violating federal election laws.

UPDATE 2: Here's a link to the decision (pdf).

Independent verification of this:

With over half the U.S. population reliant on the government for a significant portion of their income, it's a hard sell. To her credit, Sarah Palin brought up the subject of personal responsibility in her debate with Plugs. But she still felt the need to temper it by making "greedy Wall Street" the villainous focal point.

Half of the population of America is on governmental assistance?

re: #12 Walter L. Newton

Technically yes, if you fight the fish too much, it builds up lactic acid in its muscles and in some cases can be deadly. That's why its important to set the drag correctly on the reel and if you're really concerned, mash down the barbs on your hooks to allow the fish to throw it if it fights too much. Most fish survive catch-and-release if an angler is careful and doesn't handle the fish too much.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is the context of LIBOR and why these particular rates are considered high.

The spread between LIBOR and the US discount rate is the key. It means that the UK banks don''t want to loan money to each other and the is still freezing the credit market. The fact that the rates are dropping is a good sign, but still there is a long way to go.

re: #73 Killgore Trout

Americans have a long tradition of self reliance and independence. These character traits are fading just because nobody's celebrating them anymore but they are still very relevant to our national psyche. How about conservatives embracing these values again? If I have to hear one more "conservative" whine about losing because the press isn't fair I'm going to shit a pickle!

You touch upon a few competing movements here. Absolutely, the America of Washington, Jefferson, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, formed the base of who we are as a people. This is the wildcat soul of America and especially conservatism. And yet fewer and fewer people even know what this is. They know they are "conservative," because they know inherently what is right. But they don't have the backing of the true founding spirit of this country to really hold them up. This is because this stuff is not taught in schools anymore today. It's all about "the world and our place in it."

Once we no longer teach American history, we no longer have America. It's just another part of the "international community of nations."

Among the young, the widespread ignorance is shocking and disgraceful. They are getting the world they wish, and it is because we, their elders (and not implacating anyone here, many of whom tried to do the right thing), we did not do a good enough job of educating them.

PFLP (Popular Front For Liberation of Palestine) Announces Its Intentions To Murder Avigdor Lieberman.

Although I am against the murder of anyone, and the killing of most people, I really think attacking Avigdor would be a horrible thing for both the Israelis & the Phakestinians. Some of Avigdor's friends are the types of Israelis you don't want to piss off if you are an Arab. This act could have the result of turning the Arab-Israel situation into something unbearable.

Is your politician handing you a fish or a pole. The third option, they hand you dynamite and tell you to chose.

No one in this town could register any independents except the One. The Attorney asked him how he did it. The One told the attorney that he would take him registering independents the next day. Once they got to the middle of the city the One took out a stick of dynamite, lit it, and threw it to acorn. After the explosion independents started registering. The One took out a net and started picking up the voters. The Attorney told him that this was illegal. The man took out another stick of dynamite and lit it. He then handed it to the Attorney and said " Shut up and Vote!".

re: #112 David Simon
Libor as reported has been under question now for a while. The rates that the banks actually charge each other and the rates that they report as the Libor have been shown to be different. As far as making money on AIG, it will happen if they get enough from the sale of the subs to pay down the uber-preferred that got issued. If you do your research very, very, very carefully, you may be able to find some preferreds issued by some of their subs that are trading at a substantial discount to par. However, you have to assure yourself that the sub is going to be one of the ones sold and you also have to make sure that the dividend is not deferrable. The last point is not as important as one might think, since the covenants on the preferred shares almost always bar the company from paying a dividend to the shareholders, here the company that bought the sub, while the preferred dividend is unpaid. However, the buying company could play the game of not taking any dividends from its sub for a long, long time and try to build the sub up. Hence, a cumulative, at a minimum, preferred is the way to go. As for the AIG stockholders, they should find someplace to put that brown drippy bag they are holding.

Yeah, the headline's wrong. I wouldn't call these the "dole" or "governmet assistance." Money quote:

Mr. Shilling's analysis found that about 1 in 5 Americans hold a government job or a job reliant on federal spending. A similar number receive Social Security or a government pension. About 19 million others get food stamps, 2 million get subsidized housing, and 5 million get education grants. For all these categories, Mr. Shilling counted dependents as well as the direct recipients of government income.

Judge Rules Against Ohio Elections Official in Battle Over Voter ...

See Google News for more on this story.

That is an amazing case, and a good indication of just how far the left is willing to go in its power-grab. Here we have an elected official, publicly sworn to uphold the law and the constitution, openly and blatantly aiding and abetting fraud for political reasons.

I am expecting real trouble on, and after, election day. Confident of media support, Obamunists will engage in massive fraud and quite possibly open violence in an effort to intimidate opposition voters. Given their record, and the institutionalized hypocricy of their attitude toward all democratic processes, there is no reason they wouldn't.
The courts could very well invalidate the result in Ohio, leading to a showdown and the usual orchestrated efforts at intimidation in the streets.

Social Security was badly misconcieved (like a lot of large-scale defined benefit pension plans that failed, it was based on faulty assumptions); it's a Ponzi scheme. The early recipients received way more than they ever contributed.

As for it "being there," I wouldn't count on it. Even Pelosi et al only talk of "shoring it up" 'til some future date.

Hedge funds may become the new "investment bank".

Hedge funds target corporate lending as banks dry up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An unprecedented cash crunch is choking the ability of banks to lend and creating an opportunity for hedge funds to launch, or ramp up corporate lending facilities.

Companies that have relied on bank borrowing to grow, or even maintain their business, are turning to hedge funds in a move that some say may signal a broad shift of lending from banks to asset managers.

"I have a very strong belief that the new investment banks will be the absolute return hedge funds and the managers of private equity," said Thomas Priore, Chief Executive at ICP Capital, an investment firm that manages $13 billion in fixed income assets, in New York.

You are going to see a lot of changes to how lending is done in the future.

Yes. Make no mistake about it; Ted Nuggent is an idiot; his catch phrases are cliches and he says stuff just for shock value and press coverage. However, if you want a spokesman for the environment he's the man you want (and people like him). Even city dwelling concrete walking men like to fish and hunt. I was just a kid but, I remember the gas problems and hearing my dad bitch about inflation.

me too! I will never forget how my dad spiraled into a serious depression during the Carter years. It was real. My dad was an industrious guy who ran his own small business. During the Carter years he was totally screwed. It's as if the democrats said to my dad: "Hey - are you trying to provide a few jobs? are you trying to provide for your family? Well Fuck you".

I also vividly remember (right before the election) sitting on the school bus and watching as the neighborhood bully obnoxiously proclaimed his adoration for Carter. I knew then that anyone so foul (this kid beat up on girls) was the opposite of anything good. I didn't know it at the time, but it is in part why I am a conservative today. That early childhood moment started it all. Democrats acting like a-holes, democrats ruining my fathers life.
That is why I say to most democrats - "no - fuck you."

Not in all cases. As I wrote previously, the first ones in got way more than they ever contributed. That's a classic Ponzi scheme.

I would also argue that our present social security system relies too much on government control. For better examples of how a social security system should be run, see Chile and Singapore. Libertarians might quibble with the annuity mandate; but they have to admit that both systems are a damn sight better than what we have now.

yes - but if that list is 50 names and they all live at the corner of 5th and State, then what? Or if the State happens to get to the corner just at the right time and none of the prospects flees thinking its a bust, so they conduct a quick swab test, but low and behold, there isn't a match amongst them, then what? The possibilities are endless.

Lets say potential Daddy #49 is the one, but he decides stepping up to the plate is simply too much for him and won't pay, then what? In that case we have a person who I am supporting because the epitome of jerks is something unprintable here. My sympathy is a bit lower for the woman in that case rather than someone who fell in love, married, got pregnant only to discover husband is a weasel, and then Weasel won't pay child support.

I was dealing with a tenant today whose girlfriend recently leveled charges against him of mental abuse so she could get aid from Social and Rehabilatative Services.
The facts are she is physically abusive, has been charged with it, and convicted. But she is short on money, so went to the womens shelter and told them she needed help, and voila, she has it.
She has a four year old daughter, and they found out in July that she was being molested by her cousin. This weekend she allowed the perp to stay the night, and indications are he fondled one of the little girls who spent the night.

I am jumping in here because the conversation, to the degree it denies what is occurring in this Presidential race, is simply absurd. If HRC was ever called the C-word, there would be a stop the presses moment. This woman who is such a wonderful role model and should be the person women aspire to rather than someone as Machiavellian as HRC who has not accomplished 1/4 of what Sarah Palin has, is being tarred and feathered to such a despicable level I find myself gasping. Sexism and for that matter racism, ageism, special needs ism, and any other protected class are only fair game if you are a conservative or republican. The double standard is sickening. I know I am not breaking new ground here. And frankly my ire is aimed at the MSM and the punditry, but for those here who do not get how sensitive women might be who are protective of SP are, well not getting it.

re: #316 wright1

I agree..I'd do anything for Sarah..hell,I'd even hold the door for her!

Oh, 30 years of professionally managing a portfolio, buying and selling these instruments, reading the market and making a whole lot of money doing it.

Um, OK. If you insist. No need to be a smartass, but you are wrong. Yields rose on Treasuries for the simple fact that somehow the Treasury is going to have to issue Treasuries to pay for it, which would increase supply. Simply because yields went up DOES not mean that people or the market have decided to become risk takers. There are also Agency securities and mortgages. Cas in point, Agencies tightened today, but you already knew that.

Disgusting. Where is said 4 year old's father? I just can't comprehend a mother doing this, it defies logic. Mama bears would have NOTHING on me if some guy even thought about doing this to one of my baby girls, let alone put them in a situation like that deliberately.

Father is unknown. My friend has a 2YO with her. They got back together, (his mistake) about five months ago. He was recently diagnosed with Lupis, and several autoimmune problems.
Psudeostep dad is the only support those kids have. I was there two hours working on the furnace. He was cooking supper, she was on the couch, trying to sleep, and yelling at the girls to shaddup.
She has three kids, but her son is with his dad. He is a handfull, and she will not control him.
Step dad fell ill about two years ago while working for me. I've felt sorry for them, and am down over $15,000 helping them.

No, what I meant is that I could sleep alot better if Hillary was the other CANDIDATE. all right, I'm reading this thread way to slow. When I refresh there will probably be another thread.

I get confused about SS about where you were explaining. It is basically an "individual" annuity administered by the US Government --right?

the money in an annunity get's split 3 ways --fees to the company; payouts to the "owner" and commission to the agent. I ran my SS payments thru the annuity calculator at my former employer's office one day and the payout wasn't any different that if the company was holding my annuity. So, the government get's the fees, I get the same payout --what is happening to the commission?

Has anyone else looked at it this way? I've tried doing research, but don't know the proper search terms.

But how do you work around the media? I'll admit, ironically, that McCain is partly responsible for his own troubles because of McCain-Feingold's curbs on free speech. I listen to Palin's speeches on Fox News at work, and they're DYNAMITE. But the appearances always happen during the work day when most people can't see them. The 527s for some reason, aren't taking it to the Messiah the way they could. Yet, when you watch the news, story after biased story. Same thing if you open a newspaper. If you go to the magazine rack, you see a cover photo of Palin on Time or Newsweek designed to show every flaw. You need some humor, but the Daily Show, Colbert Report, and SNL are all dedicated to destroying Palin and McCain.

The media are putting up a terrible wall against getting the other side out. What else can we do?

Oh please, dispense with that "I'm a liberal" crap. As if that should suddenly elevate you to some exalted status. It doesn't instantly give you credibility because you lay claim to being "a liberal." Yeah, big wow. I don't like labels, they're meaningless.

When you write: "The difference is that I'm not blaming others for my failings." Yeah, ok, so who does? Name someone. Who's "blaming others"? Then you follow with a non sequitur: "I will point out press bias but I've never blamed the MSM for the failings of the Republican ticket." Yeah, wonderful. So, who do you claim is blaming the MSM for the failings of the Republican ticket? How do you get to this? I don't see it. The MSM tells lies, smears a political candidate, yet claims "objectivity" and a host of other non-existent "standards" -- people point this discrepancy out -- now, explain how this is "blaming the media" for Republican failings. Explain it. I'm not following your "logic."

(I ribku s'yest, i na huy sest.)

Literally "to eat one's fill of fish and sit down on a c*ck," but one could loosely translate it, for rhyme's sake:

"Here's some fish'n'chips to eat,
And a comfy penis -- have a seat!"

(Implying "to have one's cake and eat it too" or "to have the best of both worlds.")

Hi. Do you have an opinion on Sallie Mae? I heard it is yielding 5.5%. I know what SLM does, but I'm not sure how to analyze it.

This election.
The de Tocqueville tipping point, when more than half the voters are bribed from the public purse. Or as he put it, the beginning of the end.

And then the "producers" will go on strike.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need, makes for a beggared people.

its a pretty crude world we live in when this type of behavior seems appropriate to so many.

Not only appropriate, but condoned and encouraged as well by so many that have so little tolerance for any opinion or viewpoint that differs from theirs.

Is your candidate just a breaded fish stick in the freezer. In a box labeled Gordon's.

re: #366 ggt

all right, I'm reading this thread way to slow.

No, it's a defined benefit pension plan. You and your employer contribute, some actuarial assumptions are made and you're "guaranteed" a stream of income at retirement age. (I use scare quotes because the stream of income is predicated on there being enough money in the "pot" to pay the promised benefits.) Contrast that with, say, Chile (which is really a defined contribution plan combined with a compulsory annuity at retirement). If we had the same system, there would be no promised benefit. Your and your employer's contributions would go into a separate trust for your benefit, and you would be able to pick from a variety of investment options. When you retired, you would buy an annuity with your available funds which would provide you with an income stream for life.

As for it being the same as our current system, try this experiment: take the contributions you and your employer have made since you started working (information available from the statement the social security administration sends you annually). Run a future value calculation at a conservative return (8% isn't unreasonable considering what the stock market has averaged over extended periods of time). Unless you've been working for minimum wage your whole life, you should end up with seven figures.

And to see that video of how those republican marchers in Manhattan were treated. It was like watching when the bodies of our soldiers were dragged through the streets in Iraq.
I found it hard to believe those were Americans.

Just look at Zogby versus the CBS poll. How can they be that far apart? Answer: Polls that are unscientific and biased/rigged are designed to move the final poll numbers toward a particular direction. Zogby is generally reliable. And McCain is within striking distance. That does not mean tomorrow is not significant. It is crucial. But he will do fine.

Those with ability will hide it. Those with need will exaggerate it.

Not the kind of society I want to live in, or leave to my children.

They're over-polling dems, and they're just plain wrong about other things. Rove, that magnificent bastard!, has Missouri up for grabs. It isn't--it will go McCain. If even smart people are getting things like that wrong, what else are they getting wrong?

I think skanky reality shows and hollywood in general have desensitized this country to sexism. We (figuratively speaking) laugh at it and are entertained by it, and then when the issue becomes serious and some respect is called for, people are like "What's respect?"

Sarah is such a class act. I think she gets energized when people attack her. It's like rocket fuel.

Some may take more to your Aristophanic variation.

On a more direct line, the only winner in the game of From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs, is the person who's best ability is in persuading others of his superior needs. The best beggar wins.
