No WebDAV running any more. The problem is the long, long comments threads, really.

I may have no choice but to come up with a pagination system. It's the only way to control this, really -- limit the size of each page, instead of letting them grow into the megabyte range.

Is there any way for the thread to automatically go to a continuation page? Or is that the pagination system? It really bites to have a good comment and not be able to toss it out there because the thread ended. ;-)>

Though is it possible to equate "honesty" with "putting one's foot in one's mouth"? Hmmm.

Charles, maybe for the purposes of the next month, you can go to the page system. I know people here don't like it, I personally prefer it, but it might lessen the burden when there's gonna be an increase in traffic in the next few weeks.

Yes. It wasn't the McCain bus, but rather a 'straight talk bus' being organized by a group of New Mexico veterans -- not connected to the McCain campaign.

Impeachment is a political act, anything can serve as a pretext. "High crimes and misdeanors" is whatever the house votes them to be. Now, this isn't saying much, just like you can file suit for any reason as long as you have the $15 filing fee, you just can't *prevail* without good arguments. Remember, half the house wants to impeach Bush already for what he has or hasn't done.

I've had a fun time watching the daily news picture of the stock market worker. On bad days, the worker has his head in his hands.

I understand the visual, but every site used it again and again. Try an original thought, guys.

On a couple of the good days, they showed a jubilent worker.

But the funniest is today. On yahoo mail, the worker looks pensive - two fingers on his mouth. As if he wants to be happy, but he isn't secure enough in the upswing to be relieved.

The stock market is up over 400 points in one day, but the iconic imagery is one of non-committal neutral emotion.

And what's more, I agree with them. Huge swings of hundreds of points are quite common lately, so today isn't the beginning of good times, or even absolutely the end of bad.

Armada masses off Somalia

15 October 2008 Mons, Belgium — Seven ships from six NATO navies transit the Suez Canal today, on their way to conduct both anti-piracy duties and visit NATO partner nations in the Gulf region.

In response to a UN request, NATO defence ministers last week authorised NATO naval vessels to help protect World Food Programme ships carrying desperately needed supplies to conflict-ridden Somalia.

Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) already was scheduled to conduct a series of Gulf port visits and will take on the anti-piracy role off the coast of Somalia

Given the very short-notice, details of how the group will conduct the anti-piracy mission and also carry out port visits are still being finalised

SNMG2 is scheduled to visit partners of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
General John Craddock, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said, “The threat of piracy is real and growing in many parts of the world today, and this response is a good illustration of NATO’s ability to adapt quickly to new security challenges.”

SNMG2 currently comprises ships from Germany, Greece, Italy, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States. Command of SNMG2 is assumed on rotation by contributing nations and currently is Rear Admiral Giovanni Gumiero, Italian Navy. SNMG2 currently comprises:

• ITS Durand de la Penne (flagship, destroyer D560, Italy)
• FGS Karlsruhe (frigate F212, Germany)
• FGS Rhön (auxiliary A1443, Germany)
• HS Themistokles (frigate F465, Greece)
• TCG Gokova (frigate F496, Turkey)
• HMS Cumberland (frigate F85, United Kingdom)
• USS The Sullivans (destroyer DDG 68, USA)

My vote won't help (although I still plan to do so), since KY should be painted red on election night regardless.

KY might be painted blue if the acorn people register enough Hatfields and McCoys.

No WebDAV running any more. The problem is the long, long comments threads, really.

I may have no choice but to come up with a pagination system. It's the only way to control this, really -- limit the size of each page, instead of letting them grow into the megabyte range.

That would be a good idea. I am running with 1 gig 3 ghz HP XP Pro and when the comments gets to about 600-700, everything slows down, even if I only have 1 IE7 window open.

No sort of Oct. surprise is going to change ANYTHING. There are a majority of Americans who are ready to accept and support more socialism in this country.

I don't like it, but I have actaully spoken to folks who have really said that. This was all professionally set up, first with "we need a change." If you notice, nothing about spreading the wealth appeared early on, just "change."

And now, we find out this change is socialism, or at least a more social democratic way of doing politics.

And these people are SO READY FOR A CHANGE, all this is sounding good to them.

I had a person say to me this weekend that we cannot keep supporting a country with over 300 million people on the capitalistic principals. He really believes that we need to try something new.

Abraham Lincoln
Property is the fruit of labor...property is desirable...is a positive good in
the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."
Abraham Lincoln
Source: March 21, 1864 - Reply to New York Workingmen's
Democratic Republican Association".

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) Quotes
To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.

I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Most bad government has grown out of too much government.

The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.

A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government.

Walter voted right. I think the concern is for those who haven't voted yet. Will they vote right?

We won't know until November 4th, or God forbid, even later. While I have a generally low opinion of the average voter, I'm not going to freak myself out for the next two weeks. I believe all the doom and gloom could have a tendency to discourage McCain voters from turning out. It's not going to stop me, and it's not going to stop anyone else here, but there are a lot of wishy-washy types wringing their hands who need to be encouraged.

They just put up a comparison of McCain and Obama on taxes:

If your family makes $50,000, you will save $400 MORE under Obama

If your family makes $100,000, you will save $300 MORE under Obama

Then then went on to state that Obama's programs would add $3.5 trillion to the National Debt while McCain's programs would add $5.1 trillion to the national debt.

People are watching this crap and believing it. WTF?!

I'm not conceding anything. And I already voted for McCain. But your response shows how damn blind you are to the reality of what is happening in our country.

I hope the hell McCain does win, but what the fuck is wrong with me reporting what I am hearing.

Go fuck yourself and crawl back into your hole, chicken shit.

That was completely uncalled for. I never said Obama couldn't win. I know what people are like in this country. I also never said you shouldn't post your opinions or what you might hear from others. Just to be you're clear on what I actually said, I'll repeat:

Obviously there are plenty of people who think that way but I'm not convinced they're a majority. If you want to concede now, go ahead, but I'll wait for the election.

From here on out I've got nothing to say to you. You've revealed your true colors.

Apropos of nothing, I was poll watching in Clearwater, in Pinellas County, FL, to watch the early voting. Amazingly enough with all the crying in the media about "No match-no vote" everything seemed to go smoothly.

One woman showed up demanding to see what kinds of ID people were using, and was told that she may not, and no lawyers swooped down.

I didn't see Mickey Mouse or any other ACORN registered non-person attempt to vote, while hundreds did so smoothly in the first shift on the first day. Besides, even if fake registrations made it through and they managed to register, our dedicated poll workers would not let them vote without proper ID. There probably is registration fraud, but in FL we are required to turn in registration forms within 5 days or get fined, no matter what they say. Besides, if Terrell Owens actually showed up to vote, I could have gotten his autograph, dang!

Look who's talking now:

In the past two days alone, Palin has answered questions from her national press corps on three separate occasions. On Saturday, she held another plane availability, and on Sunday, she offered an impromptu press conference on the tarmac upon landing in Colorado Springs. A few minutes later, she answered even more questions from reporters during an off-the-record stop at a local ice cream shop.

By contrast, Biden hasn’t held a press conference in more than a month, and Obama hasn’t taken questions from his full traveling press corps since the end of September. John McCain—who spent most of the primary season holding what seemed like one, never-ending media availability—hasn’t done one since Sept. 23.

Do you think it's time to put her on some of the Sunday talk shows? Assuming she can handle it, it could go a long way to helping convince people she's ready (especially after some conservative pundits have slammed her).

this guys a joke. and no common sense to boot.

I'm reminded of the press outrage after the ground attack in the first Gulf war when Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf misled the press to think he was attacking elsewhere first. How dare he mislead the press? His response was to the effect that the press was telling everything they knew which meant the Iraqis knew what the press knew. To tell the truth would give up surprise, make the attack needlessly difficult, and get more American/Coalition soldiers killed. Did the press really want more Americans dead? he asked. The press let it die.

During WWII the press took special pains to say nothing that could give even tertiary intel, let alone primary, away to the enemy, because even then they knew that the enemy monitored our radio broadcasts, read our newspapers, and were getting copies of everything going over our wire services. (Not all of the wires went through "friendly" neutral countries.) It wasn't just because the government ordered it so- it was just because they were Americans. (And British, and Canadians, and Australians, and so on.)

Today, they apparently forget those salient facts until forcibly reminded of same.

I'd ask "what the H**l's wrong with them?", but I was taught to avoid rhetorical questions.

I know my father who was an ex-SEAL was really pissed once when some press were waiting on the beach somewhere when a group of SEALS were coming in not sure where it was ......... not when my father was in but he heard about it ......

Grenada, 1982. SEAL team landed to neutralize a critical monitor post at the harbor mouth. About the time they were up the beach, the reporters flipped on their lights, and started babbling into their mikes about "live coverage".

According to the guy I talked to (ex-SEAL, retired, who was on the op), those reporters should have been on their knees thanking God for Coronado. SEAL fire discipline is all that kept them alive.

/he told me that when you're spotlighted on the beach, that's usually a sign that you've been ambushed, and the standard response is to "rupture" the ambush with an immediate attack

As it was, the guards on the post took one look at the SEALS, realized they were outnumbered and outgunned, and surrendered.

He said that he just wished the rest of the operation had been that easy. A lot of the troops they met later on, especially Cubans, were hard-core to the max.

Your friend is very wise.

her theory is --seriously-- that some people hate their lives so much, that they hate all life. and resent us who dont very deeply and viscerally.
This is why there are people who fight every move forward, every common sense vision.
They hate the idea someone wont be as miserable as they are.
and they resent anyone who tries to get them to change things for themselves too.
It all started with a discussion of institutional stupidity and those who bitterly cling to doing things the wrong way even when its not working, and makes everyone miserable.

Some say (myself included) that this same psychological dynamic is why there are so many anti-civil right types when it comes to gun ownership. They know, consciously or not, that they themselves can't be trusted with a sharp stick, much less a gun. Consequently, they need to deny guns to everyone else.

Many, many years ago.......I'd say around 1980.......I read an essay by Malcolm Muggeridge called "The Great Liberal Death Wish," in which he put forth his view that the Western ("nice") Left was genuinely suicidal.

It is a compelling essay, written in Muggeridge's wonderfully vivid style, but at the time I though his conclusion was a bit over-dramatic.

In the 25+ years since I read it, I have gradually come to believe that he hit the nail on the head. What we are dealing with is the suicide, deliberate self-destruction of the West, a movement that naturally attracts those with the psychological profile that you have described.

I think, too, of a passage where John Paul II spoke of the West as "falling in love with Death itself."

re: #281 wolfie

I think, too, of a passage where John Paul II spoke of the West as "falling in love with Death itself."

it would explain a lot of their positions, from pacifism, to abortion, to wishing death on the troops, current energy policy, hatred of fertility, and much much more.

Sarah Palins mother (Sally Sheigam) was of Lithuanian Jewish heritage and so were both of her mothers parents (Louise Sheigam and Shmuel Sheigam). Her father Chuck Heath can also be considered of Jewish blood because his mother, Beatrice Coleman, was of Jewish decent. Further information on Governor Palin's ancestors can easily be found in the vital records in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius. [Link: www.archyvai.lt...] The Archives holds birth, marriage, divorce, and death records for the Lithuanian Jewish community from 1851 until 1915 when the Jews were required to leave the country because of World War I. They are in 18th Century Cyrillic script and Yiddish Many of these records include the mother's maiden name and town of registration.

A worthwhile read....
INTERVIEW WITH BERNARD-HENRI LÉVY

Lévy's latest literary publicity blitz coincides with the publication of his newest book, "Left in Dark Times: A Stand Against the New Barbarism." When Levy wrote "Barbarism With a Human Face" 31 years ago, his sworn enemy -- the barbarism he spoke of -- was Marxism. In the new book, the author has focused on his own intellectual autobiography, examining his ideological and political history and identity. He believes a segment of his political family (the left) is being led astray and he rakes his extended kin over the coals for becoming too tolerant -- especially on issues like Islamic radicalism -- and letting their anti-imperialistic attitudes and loathing of America cloud their vision and damage their democratic values. He is unusual in French terms, because he's pro-American when a lot of Europeans think the U.S. behaves like it owns the world. Lévy has a fondness and understanding of American culture. He gets us, and attempted to prove it in "American Vertigo," his report on the state of the USA.

One of those internet ads about "real age" is always popping up on National Review Online. According to them, John McCain's "real age" is 64. Obama's is 43. McCain's doing pretty well there - someone who works out as much as Obama should be doing better.

I clicked on it once and took the test. Got some glitch somewhere, because my real age is apparently...nine.

I remember during the Olympics some reporter for ESPN (?) writing rapturously about the Chinese system for developing athletes ... identifying children with potential in certain sports at an early age and basically forcing them into the appropriate sports training programs. Said it was so much better than the inefficient American system where people can actually choose what they want to do with their lives, and waste time getting involved in sports or careers where they're just going to fail.

I wrote him an e-mail and asked how he'd like it if the State could decide he was better suited to clean toilets than to write sports columns.

re: #97 usmc1968

USMC1968 told me to write this, so I will.

"I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD FOREVER".

Arrr, God bless you! We know your grief and I do not know of a finer group of people than LGF lizards. We would love to assist you in any way possible in your sorrow and loss of your husband. You will find many friends available on LGF to help with your unfortunate loss.
Mate's I propose a new LGF tradition! A message to our Lizard friends to be left to our wife's, husbands, boy and girl-friends, or just good friends along with accurate instructions on how to locate and login to the LGF. I propose the tradition or protocol should be designated in honor of our fallen friend, "USMC1968 protocol" to be acted upon two weeks of our passing.
Please keep it clean guys! But it would be a great last chance to get the last words against some irritating lizard! Or say something you believe is important, or something to comfort your grieving friends.
Thanks USMC1968, we thank you for your service and love you as a brother!

My father was also born in Elgin. Chicago probably is too far gone, but I love her too much to just give up.

Chicago needs an army of Rudy Gulianis.

And the removal and replacement of the entire city government.

re: #350 So?

No it doesn't matter, but it would be nice to know. What, you suddenly afraid of what the MSM thinks?

No. I'm not afraid of what the MSM thinks. But, whether we accept it or not, the MSM does still have a monopoly over large portions of the US population. Misinformation, spin, and accusations of covering up her past could sway some people's vote.

re: #385 Odinga

Now look at this PICTURE of Obama at a rally in FL and try to tell me that Obama is NOT worried.

He spent 600 million dollars on his campaign. The MSM licked his boots. The MSM kicked in about one Trillion in free spin, puff pieces and free ads. He got the benefits of an economic crisis. And other factors like being able to run against BUSH.

And in ALL this The Messiah is only up +5 against a 72 year old.

I say McCain wins. Obama has not closed the deal. He should be up by 12.

A serious candidate with all that help should be up by +20.

He may still manage to win (we will do our damnedest to avoid that)... but it says something about how weak he is.

Looking for it to turn to +3 in the next few days.

I thought you swore off that pirate thing, LoFlyer. But I realize it's a hard addiction to shake. Have you heard of Buccaneer's Anonymous? Otherwise known as "Friends of Jack S."

Search engine companies give out endorsements now? Are you frakkin' kidding me? What's next; an endorsement from Smilin' Bob from Enzyte?

Love those commercials.

re: #97 usmc1968 I am so sorry for your loss, even if it is God's gain.
He and I communicated from time to time by e-mail and - aside from the fact that we are - were - Vietnam Veterans we also suffer(ed) from the same illness.
I will miss him a great deal.
I just heard about his death and am still in some degree of shock about this but I will send an e-mail to his e-mail addy - if it's incorrect and if you'd like to communicate with me, just click on my nicname and if you follow Charles code, you can e-mail me directly if you choose to do so.
I am truly sorry for your loss and ours as well.
God will keep him and bless him and he will now, at last, be at peace forever.
And God bless you for telling us of his passing.

re: #385 Odinga

Certainly if you look at what are normally good indicators of what it takes to win an election, Obama should win this in a walk. That he isn't is a good indicator showing how far out of the mainstream of American political thought he is. I wouldn't want to even venture a guess as to who will ultimately win the Presidency after all the lawsuits are finished.

Oh, yeah. I guess after those pesky voters have been counted, recounted, winnowed down and otherwise counted or disenfranchised dependant on the votes of two democrats and one Republican like the 2000 election. The Legacy™ of Al Gore in practice, as it were.

With all his advantages, Obie should have a landslide and he doesn't. Either McCain wins, or The One pulls out a squeaker (with the help of his squirrely little friends at ACORN).

And the removal and replacement of the entire city government.

Kansas City cleaned up its government (sorta) in the late 40's. Used to have a powerful Democratic machine, a holdover from the Pendergast days. There's still plenty of crap that goes on, but nothing like Chicago.

Think this might have something to do with why Google is endorsing Senator Government .......

The newspaper noted that Schmidt's endorsement of Obama comes although Google is involved in a number of regulator issues with the US Congress and Justice Department, including scrutiny of a proposed advertising agreement between Google and Yahoo.

"My sense is, the Justice Department makes judgments on these issues independent of politics," Schmidt told the newspaper. "It would be unfair to Justice to imply (that supporting Obama) would make a difference."

The Journal said that although Schmidt has said he is not interested in politics, there was speculation among tech and media executives that he could fill the chief technology officer post Obama has said he would create.

I am thinking it does ......

You could probably go out on a limb and say that (probably) most French people do not understand Americans (two very different cultures -- even Quebec is, hmmm, "different" -- very different -- even what they find amusing, what makes them laugh, etc. Watching Quebec television channels is also eye opening (also get the French channels, through cable)...

Says I get an $800 tax cut v. McCain's $224 cut. Something seems amiss, however, as all it asks is my income, filing status, saving for retirement and if I have college expense. I seem to recall having to fill out just a few more lines then that during tax season....

Oh what the heck. I am sure its all on the up and up. I'm now voting for O and my $600 difference!
