ABC News' Malone: Ashamed To Be Known As a 'Journalist'

Opinion | Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:59:19 pm PDT

In his latest piece, ABC News columnist Michael Malone absolutely skewers the mainstream media for debasing and corrupting a once-honorable profession: Editing Their Way to Oblivion: Journalism Sacrificed For Power and Pensions.

The traditional media is playing a very, very dangerous game.  With its readers, with the Constitution, and with its own fate.

The sheer bias in the print and television coverage of this election campaign is not just bewildering, but appalling.  And over the last few months I’ve found myself slowly moving from shaking my head at the obvious one-sided reporting, to actually shouting at the screen of my television and my laptop computer.

But worst of all, for the last couple weeks, I’ve begun — for the first time in my adult life — to be embarrassed to admit what I do for a living.  A few days ago, when asked by a new acquaintance what I did for a living, I replied that I was “a writer”, because I couldn’t bring myself to admit to a stranger that I’m a journalist.

You need to understand how painful this is for me.  I am one of those people who truly bleeds ink when I’m cut.  I am a fourth generation newspaperman.  As family history tells it, my great-grandfather was a newspaper editor in Abilene, Kansas during the last of the cowboy days, then moved to Oregon to help start the Oregon Journal (now the Oregonian).  My hard-living - and when I knew her, scary - grandmother was one of the first women reporters for the Los Angeles Times.  And my father, though profoundly dyslexic, followed a long career in intelligence to finish his life (thanks to word processors and spellcheckers) as a very successful freelance writer.  I’ve spent thirty years in every part of journalism, from beat reporter to magazine editor.  And my oldest son, following in the family business, so to speak, earned his first national by-line before he earned his drivers license.

So, when I say I’m deeply ashamed right now to be called a “journalist”, you can imagine just how deep that cuts into my soul.

Money quote:

If the current polls are correct, we are about to elect as President of the United States a man who is essentially a cipher, who has left almost no paper trail, seems to have few friends (that at least will talk) and has entire years missing out of his biography. That isn’t Sen. Obama’s fault: his job is to put his best face forward. No, it is the traditional media’s fault, for it alone (unlike the alternative media) has had the resources to cover this story properly, and has systematically refused to do so.

Bang.

I'm glad he wrote this - but now what? I want a journalist to start rewriting these stupid stories without the spin and show the difference. I'm not sure those that use the MSM as their sole news source even know bias is there, let alone how bad it is.

29 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:07:52pm

Lifted from the story...

But what really shattered my faith - and I know the day and place where it happened - was the War in Lebanon three summers ago. The hotel I was staying at in Windhoek, Namibia only carried CNN, a network I’d already learned to approach with skepticism. But this was CNN International, which is even worse. I sat there, first with my jaw hanging down, then actually shouting at the TV, as one field reporter after another reported the carnage of the Israeli attacks on Beirut, with almost no corresponding coverage of the Hezbollah missiles raining down on northern Israel. The reporting was so utterly and shamelessly biased that I sat there for hours watching, assuming that eventually CNNi would get around to telling the rest of the story . . .but it never happened.

re: #22 Eowyn2

The best response to the left wing bias in the present day media, is what it has always been in America: Competition!

Instead of whining about it as we do all the time, someone with some smarts should just start the "FOX" of newspapers.

Journalists have engaged in shady behavior from the outset. It's only more recently in the development of the species that the idea of objectivity should play a role, though it's been pushed aside by the Bernstein/Woodward idea of journalism as crusade.

These media outlets still engage in yellow journalism, but it's a bias that is pervasive and generally in one direction - that of the leftists, Democrats, and by any measurable standard (how journalists donate to politicos, self identification, or analysis of their op-ed pages, #s of stories about the candidates, etc.) the media is the mouthpiece of the Democratic party.

42 The Sanity Inspector  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:11:18pm

Sad as his tale is, at this late date liberal news bias is simply a given, not even so much of a scandal anymore. Thankfully the internet can route around it and expose it. You can't be a gatekeeper anymore when the walls are down...

43 Ben Hur  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:11:29pm
Obama's campaign, sensing a fresh opportunity to tie McCain to Bush, quickly notified reporters of Bush's vote, sending out a mass e-mail with the Associated Press story, "Bush votes early for McCain."

51 jaunte  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:13:07pm

Michael Malone ends the piece by trying to attribute a rational calculation to the editors he speaks of:

"And then the opportunity presents itself: an attractive young candidate whose politics likely matches yours, but more important, he offers the prospect of a transformed Washington with the power to fix everything that has gone wrong in your career. With luck, this monolithic, single-party government will crush the alternative media via a revived Fairness Doctrine, re-invigorate unions by getting rid of secret votes, and just maybe, be beholden to people like you in the traditional media for getting it there."

If this hope (that Obama will save the careers of senior editors) is truly the basis for the slanted coverage, there is even more fantasizing going on in the newsrooms than everyone thinks.

Problem one? Quit being a journalist and get back to the roots of being a REPORTER! There is no shame in reporting who, what, when, where, how, and why if it is applicable. You want to write fiction? Become a freaking novelist.

The story, unless it is on the OpEd page needs no spin, personal or editorial perspective on it.

I've been waiting 20 years or more for a journalist to finally get this, and admit in it public.

The work done by journalists reflects on the character of the individual, his employer and his profession. Once you lose your credibility, once you lose the trust of your readers, you'll never really get it back.

I've always had my suspicions that left brain/right brain thinking is reflected in all this. Right brain thinkers tend to drift into the "arts" of which writing is art. Right brain thinkers tend to be idealistic.

Left brain thinkers tend to go for the more analytical type work and tend to be more down to earth.

I've come to believe Democrats tend to be right brain thinkers and Republicans tend to be left brain thinkers. The media and Hollywood is controlled by right brain thinkers.

Of course, I could be full of sh*t on this theory.

76 Noam Chumpski  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:17:06pm

When this campaign fervor dies down I have some wobbly hope that many reporters will step back and do some true introspection about where their profession is heading.

If I were a prominent journalist I would call for a national meeting to write new ethics by laws.

I would include a requirement for footnoting on ALL stories and no more anonymous sources - and my personal favorite - that no "news" stories may contain adjectives.

There's a big difference between a "large explosion" and an "enormous explosion" when just writing "an explosion occurred" would be sufficient.

The reality is that the opposite is true and that the media will go further next time.

I did the whole fraudulent donation thing to McCain and Obama; the results were as noted on your page.

Then I thought, just for the hell of it, I'd try the same thing with our Texas Senate race matching Cornyn (R) and Noriega (D).

Cornyn's site wouldn't let me because the address and zip code didn't match. Guess what? With the same info, donating five to surrender-monger Rick Noriega was peachy. I'm not going to say it's a trend with only two examples, but you think this might be a little bigger than Obama? I'd test it myself on other races, but the thought of giving more than $10 to these assholes doesn't sit well with me.

Most people, despite political ideology, are willing to hear bad news, even if their is some tangible loss on their part.

I don't know of many Republican people who upon hearing the news about Foley, or Larry Craig, did not feel the media did their job. I for one thought what they had coming to them, was justly deserved.

If you want to know what journalism was not so long ago, find and rent the original film of The Front Page, starring Pat O'Brien and Adolphe Menjou.

It is brutal--and hilarious.

Good piece, but I disagree in part with his explanation at the end. It's not just the editors, it's also the reporters and everybody else working at newspapers. Good, at least another journalist says what I have been saying and said earlier on posts yesterday. Obama represents the best and last hope for the dying generation of liberal journalists and their dwindling media outlets. They really, really think he will save their profession, much like Enron thought the Bush Administration would save them.

I was just talking with a friend of mine about the softball coverage. Unfortunately for the media, they've now set the pattern. If they become attack dogs to Obama after he's elected and scandals are revealed, the cry will be "where were you during the campaign?" More to the point, if Obama is brought down to size, the Republicans will likely regain power in 2010 in Congress and he will be a one-term president, a Jimmy Carter failure. (And we can't have the first black president be a failure, can we? Gosh, that would just prove those EVIL Republicans were right!?)

Face it, they've got no choice to continue the softball parade for the next four years. They've painted themselves into a corner. They can't stop now....

Their journey to the Dark Side is complete.

A party that has always touted itself as the party of the little man, in practice, has marginalized the little man to the point of extinction.

Recognizing, the absolute financial behemoth we are up against, a group of representatives who keep us financially tithed to other parts of the world seeking to erode our liberty by the way of $4.00 dollar a gallon gas, and now salivating at the prospect of nationalizing our retirement funds, I fear for what the future holds.

The press and media bias in this election is so over the top that it has, IMO, almost turned into a caricature.

It's a if all of the reporting is a Sat Night Live skit.

And this is where my outrage shifts.

I continue to be angry at the media, but their bias is nothing new. As the author writes, just watch their coverage of the terrorists war on Israel. Which, by the way, resembles their coverage of the Left's assault on Republicans.

But screw the media. My shock and outrage is now focused on the fact that we now know that so many Americans are outright imbeciles. For example, what sort of analysis concludes that if the market is tanking what is needed to save it is Socialism?

How is it that so many voters can not appreciate that the media is rooting for Obama and sabotaging McCain?

A gullible, ignorant, and stupid people will be the downfall of America. The external enemy can just sit back and applaud.

I can hear the rallying cries now...

"The MSM is too big to fail! We must bail them out! Leaving the news to the forces of the marketplace is wrong... the truth must be free from the corrupting influence of money!"

The MSM wants to be free to be as radical as the average humanities professor -- unconstrained by anything but their own [diseased] imaginations. They envy the way professors can define the truth as "whatever is convenient for my ideology right at this moment"

This one is from Ace website:

Guess What? Democratic Sentate Candidate Noriega Allows Fraudulent Donations Too

Yes, I think we are looking here at the biggest political conspiracy since Watergate.

They have invited the world to donate illegally to them, and invited their well-heeled American donors to illegally donate tens of thousands of dollars over the limit.

They did this deliberately.

I agree. Ace has, actually, 2 stories, this was just one of them. It appears Murtha's site also has turned off the verification feature.

Yep, I took journalism just before 'watergate'. Now, they all want to 'break' the big story and take down a Republican.

Ironically, if the MSM, et al, succeed in taking down the Republican party, they may rue the day. Because what could replace it may not be very pretty. Witness the rise of fascist leaning parties in Europe. Many of us are worried about a de facto abrogation of the Second Amendment. Perhaps the journalists who are so devoutly in favor of single party rule in this country should stop and worry about the First.

So what do you do when its the conservative talk shows that miss the boat (not talking bias here). There is a local show that I listen to in the morning (Sean&Frank, 680am). Its fairly good - though lately I find myself knowing more than the hosts about their topics and must resist all urges to call and say "No, that isn't right. Here is the real story...." I did send an email when they had their news director Brenda Carl fill in as a co-host. I had to turn the radio off as her commentary was just dumb. I gave examples in my email (and I didn't call her dumb), but got no response. These last few weeks who has the host been invoking as his "great friend and popular blogger" with inflection like he was in awe of this woman? Pam Geller. Seriously. So after the 6th time of him saying "I just got off the phone with the very smart, in the know PG of AS, and she is saying..." I couldn't take it any more. I had and have no desire to attack her personally, but I did send an email with links to Ms. Geller's recent unsavory associations and her rant against those who have disassociated themselves with her because of it - not to mention the conspiracy theory stuff. I admitted that I used to really enjoy PG and even had quite a few email "conversations" with her, until she made the decision linking up with these groups was a justifiable means to her end. It isn't and never will be to me. As part of my proof and citations, I linked to Phil Berg's troofer blog. I pointed out that yes, he was a Deputy Atty General but that doesn't make you immune to crazy as they were saying this guy is no kook, he was an Atty General! This morning? Phil Berg is a guest! YIKES. No answer to my email, BTW. I guess I just won't listen any more.

Some people think were "the One" to win, journalism will catch up with itself and suddenly behave like the Emperor who realized he had no clothes.

I do not agree.

The fawning has just begun. BHO is a watershed. The leftist agendas in the MSM is in lockstep with a dictator which they truly seek deep down. In many respects the analysis comes down to a belief in Humanism vs. God (or a Higher Power/Spirit). BHO represents so much religion for them because he encompasses multi-sects such as the church of Environmentalism, church of Socialism, Marxism, egalitarianism, anti-capitalism, and the list goes on. Yes, to the Left he is so many things to so many people. No need for God when you have the One.

I am not apoplectic about this prospect because I maintain McCain will win. Maybe I am spending too much time on the Hillbuzz site and other(s) like it but ironically it is my Faith in something larger than Barack that keeps me optimistic.

It's the revenge of the risk-averse. Some people just don't want to compete, Iron Fist. Then they get all passive-aggressive. That's what this is about, on a very large scale.

I dunno, godfrey. I know quite a few people with a lot to lose. They ARE going to lose it, and no amount of evidence will divert them from this "historic vote".

It wouldn't be applied fairly. The Leftists in charge of determining the "fairness" would see themselves as unbiased, while only seeing the bias on the Right.

re: #145 eschew_obfuscation

Actually, if the Fairness Doctrine were reinstated and applied "fairly", talk radio would be decimated, but the level of conservative discourse in all other forms of media would increase......but what's the likelihood that it would be applied "fairly"?

re: #74 Outrider

I've always had my suspicions that left brain/right brain thinking is reflected in all this. Right brain thinkers tend to drift into the "arts" of which writing is art. Right brain thinkers tend to be idealistic.

Left brain thinkers tend to go for the more analytical type work and tend to be more down to earth.

I've come to believe Democrats tend to be right brain thinkers and Republicans tend to be left brain thinkers. The media and Hollywood is controlled by right brain thinkers.

Of course, I could be full of sh*t on this theory.

Writing isn't quite like other art forms. It requires the left brain skills of language and organization. I think successful imaginative writers can access both sides of their brain equally. As a technical writer, I am mostly using my left brain, although I frequently find myself organizing my material more intuitively than logically. As for whether Dems are right brained and Repubs are left-brained, I don't think it's quite that cut and dried.

This is akin to admitting an affair to your spouse. She/he knows something’s wrong, or has noticed a change in behavior. I'm sure that it’s cathartic for the lone journalist to admit it. WE on the outside are still stuck with the crappy feeling of being outnumbered & betrayed.

The only ones with the freedom to attend school (or those with enough money) used to be those with more income from parents. At one point, those parents only had the money because they had earned it and knew what it cost to make it.

Today, those who have advanced degrees often have no idea what a hard struggle is, having grown up middle-class and living middle-class lives without much of a problem. Hence, they have no idea what happens financially in business or the markets.

219 ClosetConservative  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 1:49:48pm

When you think about it, the media has a lot to do with the current political climate in the United States. One thing that's sadly absent in political discourse today is historical allegory. The media is always going on about the next new scandal or product or idea with little regard for past events. Thus, because socialism is getting a lot of play in the media, it's considered a 'new idea' when, in fact, it's been tried before. Think Pol Pot and the killing fields of Cambodia. I'd have to say that ideas like American exceptionalism and the human rights improvements brought on by capitalism don't get mentioned much. So they're considered 'old ideas', or relics of a bygone time. And in today's newness-crazed culture (new iPod, new car, new governmental system) the so-called 'new' idea of socialism is going to win out.

The other issue is the attitude of youth towards generally American values. I told a peer of mine the other day a bit about how I thought a McCain administration would lend more credibility to American exceptionalism. He replied with, "So what? American exceptionalism is old news. It's someone else's turn now." Laissez-faire applies to the economy, not foreign policy!

I think a free press is an essential feature of any democracy. Yet, who would have thought that the press would suddenly turn its own papers into willing, complicit little Pravadas? If The Zero is elected (along with a Democratic sweep in Congress), then the Press will function as an adjunct to The State...Parroting and Praising all that the Dear Little Leader mouths. In the past, most of us believed that in order to achieve a State Owned and Operated press, coercion was required. Now, however, we see how willingly the MSM is to becoming a slave -- fettered and chained, "beholden" to one Political Party! but not through force, by willful, if not eager, betrayal.

I'm wondering what happened to bring this about? Why did this take place? this abandonment of all honorable principles? (might also add that with the MSM so thoroughly and egregiously in the pocket of Obama, there does arise an opportunity -- an opportunity for independent bloggers to counter the MSM). I'm curious also -- is this a generational thing here? A younger generation eagerly endorsing a biased, slanted, propagandist media? Are they incapable of applied reasoning, of critical thinking, of analyzing events? (I've read about a researcher into brain sciences -- he's alleging that due to the electronic media -- video games, television -- and the number of hours young people spend at these activities, that certain skills (ones associated with linear thinking/logic) are on the decline -- while other areas of the brain are being "trained"/"developed" in ways the world hasn't seen previously.)

Which is, of course, the last reasons someone should go to J-School.

I used to be a counselor at a journalism camp at a state university; they held contests, and one of the prizes for winners was a copy of Woodward and Bernstein's book, "All the President's Men". I think a lot of this stuff started with those guys. Everyone wanted to be them.

Journalism was already starting to lean left at that time, I'm sure...but that seems like it was the start of the glorification of newspaper reporters.

I have two little ways of protesting against unfair news organizations. When it comes to TV, I turn them off. But my way of protesting against the NY Times is more fun. A few years ago, I used to get the Times on Sunday, but I cancelled it. However, they still send me postage paid envelopes along with the slip I need to fill out if I want to renew it. In fact I got another one yesterday. So now, I write them a note that goes something like this:

Dear NY Times, when you stop publishing such a piece of crap, and start producing a paper worthy of reading, I will consider renewing my subscription. Is that a deal? I didn't think so. But thanks for sending me the postage paid envelope so I could send you this note. I hope your stock price continues to plunge ... you have earned it.

I have one favorite joke from the whole Cold Fusion thing:

How can you tell the difference between a physicist and a chemist studying cold fusion?

A: The physicist believes that fusion is not occurring, yet shields the apparatus with several tons of lead brick.

The chemist believes fusion is occurring, and shields the apparatus with a plastic dishpan.

No one else laughs, but I do.

Look at today's global crisis. The USA isn't alone in facing the meltdown, but we are alone in actually seeing an appreciating currency durning it! Why is that? Because our fore-bearers did not succumb to government hand-outs of free shit for everyone!

Twit socialists countries are getting whacked harder and will take longer to recover.

If the USA adopt those socialist policies? Where is the logic?

This is the damage of cultural relativism and the way it has been jammed down our throats through the media, and down the throats of kids through our education system and its roots in liberalism. There are no absolute American values anymore. Every idea is equally relevant. Therefore, the idea that "nothing is "right" is actually considered "correct." We must be very afraid of this. This takes our country into a realm where we have nothing to grasp at.

A lot of "educated" people seem to believe that all of life is a theoretical exercise. They develop theoretical solutions such as Marxism and regardless of multiple failures of their solutions, insist that their theories are perfectly valid if only the right people implemented them. Such "educated" people somehow miss the fact that their theories are unworkable even after many efforts ending in failure.

Educated fools, the lot of them!

Obama’s Redistribution of wealth

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read “Vote Obama, I need the money.” I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a “Obama 08″ tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference — just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need–the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I’ve decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient needed the money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

For anyone who does not understand what redistribution of wealth means or even looks like, go watch the movie Dr. Zhivago and look for the scene where Yuri returns to his father-in-law's house in Petersburg, only to find that the local Commissar has deemed that it is too big for them and has assigned two dozen peasants to live there--making it a slum.

That's what re-distribution of wealth looks like.

The 2 liberals think a minute and then responds, "Yes, the guy has two assholes."

Excellent list, but, as I said earlier this week, it is much, much bigger than that. It might be more correct to say that the Democratic Party is the political arm of the media-industrial complex.

Lizardoid neocon hippie summarized it very nicely:

Explosion Destroys Key Bridge in Georgia

An explosion has destroyed a key bridge linking Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia with the rest of the country.

Georgian officials and Abkhazian authorities blamed each other for the blast. Residents of Abkhazia's Gali district had used the bridge to reach Georgia's Zugdidi region. Georgian authorities have called the explosion an effort by separatist and Russian officials to cut off Abkhazia and another breakaway Georgian region, South Ossetia, from the rest of the country.

"These are deer tracks!" exclaimed the first.

"No, they're rabbit tracks." responded the second.

They were still arguing about it when the train hit them.

A young lady overheard a discussion three old British gentlemen were having in a pub. The first gentleman said "I think it would be spelled w-o-o-m." The second said "no, no it is spelled w-o-u-m-b-e" and the third stated "you are both wrong, it is spelled w-h-o-o-m-b-e".

Not being able to stand it any more the young woman leaned over and corrected them. "Gentleman I believe if you look it up the word is spelled w-o-m-b". She then walked out of the pub.

2 Aggies go on a fishing trip. The rent all required equipment to do it up right - reels, rods, wading suits, boat, and a cabin near the lake. The first day they go fishing and catch nothing. Same on the second, third and fourth day. On the fifth and last day of their vacation, one of them finally catches a fish.

On the drive home, they are both glum. One looks to the other and says "Do you realize that one lousy fish cost us $1500?".

You watch the Obama rallies and you see the crowds cheering when he says he is going to tax the rich.

It used to be an article of faith in America that the middle class aspired to be "rich". More then that, they assumed someday they or their children would be. And when rich is defined as a couple of hundred thousand dollars, many succeeded.

Now people cheer an Obama promise to punish the hard working and successful.

It does not portent well for the future.

Am I understanding this analogy correctly?
ONLY EDUCATED people are theoretical and they THUS, do not understand
finances and business?
Clarify please!

Not what I meant to convey at all.....perhaps poorly expressed....please note the scare quotes around the word educated though.

I'll try again.....

People who believe that educated people vote disproportionately democrat believe that they do so because it's the smartest thing to do.....something only those who are educated would do.....they believe that conservative thought is simplistic and intellectually unsophisticated.

They also tend to treat all problems from a theoretical perspective to the exclusion of any contradicting evidence. Kind of the opposite of a common sense approach. I believe that this is the primary reason Marxism always fails.....it's a failure to understand human nature and what motivates people.

Conservatives, of which I am one, believe that truly well educated people understand that there are such a things as good judgment, common sense, intuition based on experience, and learning from one's mistakes......all of this in addition to the ability to develop a good theory (which is also very necessary).

I will admit though, that I do not understand how there can be so many successful liberal business people when business requires one to successfully address, on a regular basis, real problems.

I hear the word "compassion" from my left leaning friends when they talk about politicians. They want a person with "compassion." I want a person who will do their job --follow thel letter of the law --without emotion but with a clear idea of the difference between right and wrong.

I don't get the "compassion" angle. Is it a right brain thing?

I think it's a moral preening thing. Lefties love to feel like good people, preferably by spending other people's money on some intractable social problem. Also notice that they're conspicuous consumers of organic foods, hybrid cars and sustainable crap of all kinds. It projects the image that they're compassionate, socially aware and hip, and that makes them feel good about themselves.

Silly old-fashioned me, I feel good about myself when I do the right thing, even when no one's watching.

With eleven days left, McCain has a bit more than $11 million dollars left to spend. Meanwhile, Lord President For Life Obama is spending $2 million just on his election night party.

/that sucks

Well, on the plus side, this campaign wil probably mark the end of the whole "public financing" boondoggle.

No future candidate is going to take the chance that they might repeat McCain's mistake and actually trust their opponent to take the public money.

It was great. The MGM was packed the whole day of the concert, people everywhere. Lots of guys wearing grass skirts and coconut bras. It was hysterical!
I was humming Wasted Away Again at Margaritaville all the way home!

The only way I'd high five a dude wearing a grass skirt and coconut bra would be at a buffet concert..Glad you had a ball and arrived home safe.

re: #270 gmsc

Indeed.

But I do want to point out a misuse. I do it, the writer here did it, everyone does it, but we need to remember that wealth isn't redistributed because it isn't "distributed" the first time. It is created.

Even if I make money selling apples on the street, I am creating my own wealth. I trade money for apples, and then increased their worth by taking them to a different location, where people are willing to trade more for each apple than I traded for that apple when it was where I bought it. I increased the value of each apple. I created wealth.

I want to point out that in Houston I think the reporting used to be more objective when there where 2 major news rags in town.

That may be rather passè in today's environment (re: Chicago) but in theory one paper should try to counterpoint the other and allow the populace to decide.

This is the kind of media incitement that needs to be stopped. Pollsters have
to know that they first of all cannot be intimidated, no matter what the poll outcome may be. They need to track the death threat and expose the person who made the call.

I guess Iran did not take into account that N. Korean designs were based on using expendable slave labor.

"If I were a father and had a daughter who was dishonored I would not despair over her; I would pray for her salvation. But if I had a son who became a journalist, and remained a journalist for five years I would give him up. Possibly, I should have been wrong in this particular case, possibly the daughter would have been lost and the son won back again; but ideally speaking my observations are correct: to serve politics through the daily press is too much for a man. Who would dare disclaim having sometimes, and perhaps often, made use of a little lie: but a little lie used every day - and in print, so that as a result one is appealing to thousands and thousnands - that is frightful. One is appalled at the way a butcher uses a knife: but that is absolutely nothing to the terribly irresponsible and hardened way in which a journalist uses lies."

FTA: ''...Comforting the Afflicting and Afflicting the Comfortable...'' Apparently he didn't have an editor for this piece or ... more likely, his slip is showing because the MSM is indeed 'Comforting the Afflicting' - it is comforting those afflicting us with The 0ne.

Furthermore, I'm not buying the editors are responsible b.s. Almost all the news in newspapers and on TV from any individual no matter cub reporter to most highly placed tv "journalist" is in the tank for B. H. 0bama.

Editors - bah humbug!

410 Benschachar  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 3:16:20pm

One of the best parts of the article was the comment from getaclue: the media isn't liberal because it's owned by corporations. I mean, wow!, between the one-sided coverage of the election and Rathergate how dense can someone be?

411 Silhouette  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 3:21:02pm

Personally, I don't think the lies are new. Or even worse.

I just think every day someone who once believed the media, someone who agreed it was right for the press to accuse, confront, and attack the bad guy because he was the bad guy and that is how the press helps: someone who used to believe all that finally realizes that the only evidence they have that this guy is the bad guy is from the media that is attacking him.

Sometimes they have the epiphany all on their own, but more often when someone they know isn't evil is the target of the press (or themselves are targets) and they suddenly see how it works. I imagine for the press the epiphany may come when they are asked to be part of the lies, and they question, "If my contribution is a lie, what if all the stories are spin and lies? Maybe he's not scum. Maybe we are the scum for lying."

Late to the thread but I think that journalists should model themselves on Brian Lamb (from C-Span). He's retired now but I never did figure out where he stood. Had my suspicions but he was the epitome of professionalism. Should be the standard these bastards aspire too. Not holding my breath.........

Please, can we just not give him any more money? He and McCain are about even now in funds to draw on. This point has already been proven by lots of other people in the blogosphere.

The paranoid part of me thinks it's a plot to get The One money.

Oops! Sorry, I down-dinged ya. Couldn't decide if you were saying not give McCain any more money, or what.......you can down-ding me right back!

415 jcbunga  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:29:12pm

Part of me says this is a remarkable article and I feel for the man as he laments what's become of his profession.

Part of me says the media's wholesale dive into irrelevance is not as simple or as recent as he portrays it.

The media has devolved into useful idiots. They've become the enablers of the freedom haters and when the media is gone the owners will find another tool. The media elite didn't make their money selling newspapers or cable subscriptions, and they'll be around when the media is dead.

What's dying here can no more be called journalism than the lunacy we have for an economy can be called capitalism.

Headlines say capitalism is dead.

How ironic.

The media is dead and if we have any luck, this no drill/open border/loans to anyone with a pulse economy is right behind it.

Then maybe we can have journalism and capitalism again.

re: #200 CyanSnowHawk

I only get it because of the Sunday coupons. Mrs. Hawk saves more per week with those than the paper costs for a month. I wish they had Sunday only subscriptions like they used to.

Since our local paper is the Newark Star Ledger (better known as Pravda on the Passaic River) I go to the local 7-Eleven every Sunday morning, pull out the coupon sections and then throw the rest of the paper in the dumpster where it belongs. No reason to allow that trash into my house.

Some of these names are familiar in terms of prior political affiliations, but I'd never heard that Brokaw, Couric, Ifill, Mitchell, Cooper, Olbermann, or Maddow had a history of paid political work. Do you have some links that would explain what they did and when?

They work as hired shills, and cash their paychecks. Duh.

re: #108 littleoldlady

I just got a chill from read this.

I agree -- his explanation was just chilling. But, Onslow is right, too -- these people were the Yuppie Triumphalists that made a FORTUNE and controlled and distorted information for how many years? Why didn't Malone speak out before? Why didn't his conscience overpower him earlier, when he could have found like-minded professionals and OPENLY named the problem -- why, even, didn't he do it earlier in this terrible, terrible election cycle?

Life will go on, for all of us. And, perhaps it's useful that he wrote all this, even at the eleventh hour. But, there are so many of us who are professionals and DON'T make even adequate money, whose kids are on scholarships in college based, yes, on grade point average, but MAINLY on parental income. Who know how to get what's necessary to survive and thrive at the 2nd had store (like Sara Palin!) and keep our integrity and teach it to our kids. And we consciously work for the public good -- a choice Malone could have made, long ago.

I applaud his last-minute candor, but it should have come much sooner.

Father: Little Johnny what do you want to be when you grow up?
Johnny: A journalist.
Mother: He gets that from your side of the family.
Father: Johnny, there are other much more honorable professions, Johnny.
Johnny: Like what?
Mother: Male prostitute for example.
