Three and a half minutes of Shatner ranting and the interviewer says "It's possible that he just wanted to invite the intimate people in his life" to the wedding. HAH!

Shatner even thinks somebody else's wedding is about HIM! Who's demented now?

Shatner's "tensions aboard the USS Enterprise" were nothing compared to the tensions the sailors, including John McCain, faced on the real Enterprise during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Get a grip, Shatner.

But, I just want the cake!

21 FurryOldGuyJeans  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:07:27pm

The intense dislike of William Shatner the actor by his fellow cast members is not anything that is new. This has been a well documented fact almost since the moment the show originally went on the air. Shatner was just too much of a pushy "star" that was always willing to grab the scene at the expense of anyone else that had the unfortunate duty of having to act with him.

22 new hampshire dad  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:07:40pm

HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN THIS!?

I was in another room while my two girls were getting ready to watch Dora on the Nickelodeon channel...the only TV show they're aloud to watch. Suddenly my oldest starts to yell out, "I'm not voting for you," and I think I hear Obama's voice. I run into the TV room and see Obama as he finishing speaking directly to the kids! This was not a generic political commercial this was a commercial directly toward the kids but I have no idea what was said. Does anyone know? Is it just me or is that not over the line and newsworthy?

Uh, he made it a fabulous media extravaganza! Intimate and cozy are not words that come to mind.

Who knows who the villian is, but with the way Shatner mocks himself in the Priceline ads, he seems fairly well adjusted and not a big ego. Eh, in the end, why do I care.

Just pass the fruit cup.

Since we are sharing - I used to own a Science Fiction collectibles store in 92-94ish. I was a Star Wars freak during this period. What would crack me up, though, is the Trekkies would come in all decked out in Uniform and had business cards from this local club where someone was Captain (insert their last name), etc. They called each other this and would even hit their fake communicators IN THE STORE to talk to each other. Super bizarre.

The Star Wars people, however, just like the cool toys and movie props. They would occasionally dress for Halloween or what not. SW people were cool - they didn't have to act like they really were on the way to Tatooine! Then the new SW movies came out and what did I see? Star Wars people going to the movie dressed like Luke and Darth! Oh it was awful. Then the Cons - storm troopers all over the flippin' place. It was really a psychologically damaging moment for me.

Ok - carry on with your conversations.

48 gop_patriot  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:12:39pm

Not that it matters, but I'm with Shatner on this one. Apparently they weren't ever friends, and Takei made it a point to say in TV interviews I'm not inviting Captian Kirk, his ego, blah blah blah. Takei sounded like he's still all sour grapes over it.

It's been 40+ years, get over it, George. LOL

49 eon  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:12:43pm

Trivia fact; Walter Koenig (Chekov) was brought in in the second season (1967-68) as a "pinch-hitter" for Takei at the helm, because George was off the show for almost the entire first half of the shooting schedule filming The Green Berets at Ft. Bragg with John Wayne's Batjac company.

OT: I AM BILL

Every time I turn on the internet these days, it seems like another right wing blogger is digging up more baloney on Professor Bill Ayers. Apparently these people would rather talk about Bill Ayers' passionate youthful rambunctiousness than the issues that really matter to us, like Sarah Palin's shoe bill. Well, I've got a message for you, Mister Google cache McCarthy fascist: I'm mad as H-E-double sippy straws, and I'm not going to take it any more. No longer will not remain silent while you smear and slur this great America-hating American with his own quotes. Hear me now: when you mess with Bill Ayers, you're messing with me.

Because I AM BILL.

I AM BILL. I am the everyday forgotten little guy in your neighborhood, the quiet anarcho-syndicalist family man who gets up early and punches the clock at the local state university, writing the manifestos and polemics and grant proposals that keep America humming.

George Takei made a good living (when Asian Americans were not getting all that much work in the industry) thanks to Star Trek and whoever was in the cast and behind the scenes. Let's try to be a little grateful for the blessings G-d bestows, pal.

Shatner does SEVEN

99 RTLM  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:24:03pm

George Takei responds!

[Link: blog.wired.com...]

"It is absolutely baffling to us, because, in fact, we did invite Bill, and we didn't hear from him," Takei told Entertainment Tonight.

Shatner claimed in his homemade video that Takei (pictured) and his longtime partner had failed to invite him to their wedding. Shatner also theorized that Takei is suffering from some kind of "psychosis" (but in a nice way).

Takei, who portrayed Sulu in the '60s television series as well as several Trek movies, said Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, avoided many opportunities to get together with former inhabitants of the Enterprise bridge, even skipping the funeral of series creator Gene Roddenberry.

Chalk it up to Shatner's egomania and questionable stability, said Takei.

"Bill is the star of the show, and he likes to be the star of the show," Takei said. "He likes the attention.... It's a big, shining, demanding ego.... It's all typical of Bill. You have to consider the source."

Koskidz (via TPM)......

McCain's PA Comm Director Pushed False Mugging Story

John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established -- and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's cheek stood for "Barack," according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.

TPM has been offline since this story popped up so I can't verify but this story could go from bad to worse.

cheers

eon

Well, here's one thing I don't get. Chekov, as you say, didn't come along until the second season... so why is he in the prequel? Come to that, every series-regular, so it seems, is in the prequel. It just seems really unlikely that they ALL just happen to have been there at the beginning like that.

On the other hand, there is NO sign of Gary Mitchell. None! Nada! Zip! Wasn't he supposed to be Kirk's best, closest friend during the academy days? There should at least be SOME sign of him in the cast.

But, then, I suppose we'll all know when the actual movie comes out. Maybe he gets a brief appearance, or at least a brief mention, or something.

The thing that worries me a bit, though is... this is not so much a prequel as it is a reboot. Sorta like the recent movie "Casino Royale" was a reboot of the Bond franchise.

194 Querent  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 4:43:07pm

Sol Roth et al:

Prop 8 wants to stick its tongue out at SF and enshrine marriage in the state constitution as exclusively heterosexual.

No idea what this does to my two pals who just got hitched.

However the ads for it that i've seen have more strawmen than a cornfield in Nebraska. For example one trades on saying that all 'cops know that kids thrive best when they have both a father and a mother' -- as opposed to two fathers or two mothers, presumably.

Your mileage may vary, but i think it's the wrong approach for "protecting" marriage.

FUD = Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt -- like a lot of the stuff that Charles won't get into, because, like he said before, it's classic Sun-Tzu. A scary distraction.

Cool thought, the notion that our old, classic TV shows live on in deep, deep, distant outer space... Unfortunately, there's one problem with it:

So I gather, a recent scientific study, done as part of SETI, showed that when radio and TV signals get about 2 light years out, they turn into just plain white noise... no discernable information at all.

1) He may be an egomaniac (I'm sure he is), but he's right: why not get over it, let bygones be bygones, and totally just like invite him to the wedding already.

2) I know Sulu responded that he was invited...but somehow I doubt it because it also states he's avoided any event where Shatner was involved as well, including a funeral.

3) I'm really not a trekkie, but I'd be Kirk's Orion Slave Girl any day. =)

"Having had no seafaring experience, I was surprised at how different the life of a sailor was from what I had imagined. Our day began at dawn, where, after a hearty breakfast, we had punishment 'til lunchtime. After lunch, there was more punishment 'til dinner. After dinner, we would pull up anchor and sail for an hour, then drop anchor again for soem verbal humiliation, followed by evening punishment. I'm a big fan of Dorothy Parker's writing and wit, but I read her bio a couple years ago and wished I hadn't. What a miserable, inconsiderate person.

I've seen this video yesterday; I'm totally with Shatner.

The whole mantra of his ego is too old. Sulu didn't have any cozy and intimate-friends' oriented gay marriage party. For many years, Sulu headbutted his face just to smear William Shatner on a one-way track.

Cpt. Kirk, dial the phaser's amplifier to the max, NOW!

285 Shai  Fri, Oct 24, 2008 6:26:01pm

Lol @ Shatner insinuating Sulu's a homosexual, in order to insult him, but pretending he thinks there's nothing wrong with it. He's hilarious. Denny Crane is a funny character too. Good video.

Do they really do that at weddings? (Serious question.)

Not as much as they used to. "Hot hot hot" "I will survive" and the interminable "Last dance" kinda give me the shivers.

It's from "My Favorite Year"...not widely known, but one of the funniest movies of all time. I can't hear the 1812 Overture without thinking of the ride up the staircase.

So what can I get by redeeming my 50 points?

Ding!

We have a winner.

Very funny movie.

"He's PLASTERED!"

"So are some of the finest erections in Europe..."

All points go into a lock box. :)

For what it's worth, I met Bill Shatner personally some years ago and had a chance to talk with him at length. I found him to be both charming and intelligent... a real gentleman with a great sense of humor, and an absolute pleasure to converse with.

I think that Shatner has taken a lot of unnecessary, unfortunate crap from his co-stars over the years and he's always chosen the higher ground.

But he shouldn't have to keep taking it.... 40 years of idiocy it is more than enough. I'm glad to see that Bill has finally decided to give it an appropriate response.

Good to hear. What did you discuss?

Btw, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have tinnitus of the ear. There was an explosion on the set that went off near both of them and ever since then they've both had a constant ringing in their ears. Apparently Shatner got the worst of it and he says it almost drove him nuts until he learned how to block it out.

Horses.

Fascinating ... you shared a common interest. Yes, I know that he's into horses. I remember seeing an interview with him recently on his horse farm.

Thanks for the feedback, Irish!

I am a William Shatner fan, and I have to say that he has always been gracious to his fans.

Mr. Takei is up to something here, because he talked about the guest list and so forth on the radio before the wedding - Mr. Shatner was not invited. Later, he says he was invited. Hard to know which face to believe, but he is wearing two of them.

I don't blame Mr. Shatner for saying something, and I think Mr. Takei is fibbing.

I will bet a delicious gumdrop that both Shatner and Takei were in on the joke.

This is an older article from 2007, but it sure says a lot about the kind of man that Bill Shatner is.

From his humble thespian beginnings on CBC Radio, Shatner has carved out one of the most impressive, varied, durable, and admirable careers in Hollywood. It’s a career that has spanned five decades as an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, recording artist, and author. In fact, it could be argued, Shatner owns one of the most recognizable faces on the planet.

Today, with his career on warp speed, Shatner has become one of Hollywood’s most prominent philanthropists. Combining his lifelong passion for horses with a desire to help children, Shatner turned his philanthropic attention to therapeutic horse riding centers across Israel in partnership with the Jewish National Fund (JNF).

The benefits of horseback riding for those with disabilities have been recognized for over 3,000 years, explains Shatner. Therapeutic riding has been widely used since the early 1950s as a tool for improving the lives of the disabled. Individuals with decreased cognitive, physical, or emotional disability can benefit from the horse’s gentle and rhythmic movements. Riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in verbalization, flexibility, balance, muscle tone, motor development, and emotional well-being.

Shatner is the spokesperson for the William and Elizabeth Shatner/Jewish National Fund Therapeutic Riding Consortium Endowment for Israel, which hopes to fund the nearly 30 therapeutic riding programs that exist throughout Israel. The goal is to raise $10 million to support these unique programs and to maintain their accessibility for people of all economic backgrounds. “We want all kids - Jews, Bedouins, Israeli-Arabs, Jordanian, Palestinian, and Egyptian - to benefit from these therapeutic horseback riding centers,” insists Shatner.

Good stuff.

313 goneskiing  Sat, Oct 25, 2008 7:45:53am

These two both need to get over it, or at least behave themselves in public. Say everything Shatner has to say here is true; does he really need to say it and be so smug about it?

How about just a simple "... I'm still not sure what I did to offend him so much", etc. without all this talk about sickness and pity.

Does anyone know the meaning of the word "unnecessary" ?

315 Mr Secul  Sat, Oct 25, 2008 11:03:01am

Does anyone remember the scene in the Generations film where Kirk and Picard ride the horses?

Shatner used his own dressage horse and at one point Picard is on his horse which is standing still and Shatner rides his horse in a slow circle around Stewart, facing him the entire time, as he delivers his lines.

Stewart looked slightly uncomfortable during that scene.

As well he might because he knew that scene didn't happen by accident and I am sure that he knew exactly what was going on. (And who set it up.)

Picard's character had a reputation of being a horse rider but, in that scene, Kirk literally rode rings around Picard.

Shatner has an ego? Needs to dominate the set?

re Sol Roth 166
Re Prop 8 in California: In England, students can take a law degree without having any intention of becoming a lawyer. If after law school they train with a lawyer, then they become a barrister. Anyway, as someone who is a lawyer I can tell you that law school teaches one about precedent in common law which is our system and it also teaches one about the slippery slope.
Marriage has always been a privilege. It has never been open to any relationship "based on love" which is why sisters cannot marry brothers and parents cannot marry children, and children cannot marry children or any one else. There are no laws about who you can love. You c an love anyone you want to. And we've solved the problems of visitation in hospitals with laws on things such as domestic partnership. However most people know that all things being equal children are better off with a father and a mother married to each other. Recognizing gay marriage means no preference can be made by adoption agencies to place children with a husband and a wife married to each other. The change in laws has already had the effect of closing down the Catholic Orphanage in Massachusetts and the government taking over the responsibility. This is not about Gay Rights. This is about the Leftist Agenda. If the Left really cared about gays they would not have welcomed Ahmadinejad to Columbia University who kills gays. (In the same way that the Leftists don't really care about women because they welcomed Ahmadinejad, and they heap scorn on Sarah Palin. In the same way that the Left is not about civil rights because it does not support civil rights, freedom of speech nor freedom of the press. In the same way that the Left is not interested in helping Blacks. They hated Judge Thomas. They are interested in exploiting Blacks. In the same way that the Left does not care about democracy but overturns the vote of the majority with 1 to 4 judges overriding the vote. ) The Left is about one thing, the Leftist Agenda.

There are plenty of gays who support traditional marriage. The Leftist agenda is about destroying America,. and making it more like Europe as if Germany was morally superior to the US. Tell me about it. The Left has a learning disability. They learn nothing from history. The Left is also about seizing power and keeping it and heeping the benefits, to which they would like to become accustomed, on themselves. They are elitist.
They love True Believers. Munch. Munch. Yummy!

I was married. Still don't have the big KitchenAid mixer. (Don't have the husband, either.) As much as I like wedding cake, I think I'll just order one for myself!

I'm married, bought the wife a KitchenAide mixer she's been whining for. She never uses it. Waste of money, (waste of a marriage too btw).
